Lighthearted and cheesy--which makes it enjoyable, especially if you've seen anime that could be described as such. Don't take it too seriously, and you'll have fun.
Well written and very cheesy. Definitely has a power ranger/super sentai vibe, so don't go in expecting a dramatic superhero story. If you want some good old Saturday morning fun give it a try
I wasn't sure if I would like this game; I was never a fan of power rangers. However, it's like power rangers with a more consistent plot, and higher stakes. It is not just a monster of the week thing; one fights the government, a shadowy organization, and a cult, sometimes simultaneously. It's not the best Choice of Games game ever, but it's certainly one of the better superhero ones, and definitely a solid all-rounder.
Different. I'm sure others might describe it other ways, but the vibes I got were Power Rangers then Avengers, then Cthulu mixed with the X-Files. Mind warping? Yes I think so. Others have stated they got the impression that the author started as a child and grew up as he wrote. That seems far-fetched. I think he likes a variety of things and decided to write a story that covered them all. If you are willing to put up with the unexpected, give this a try. I enjoyed this crazy ride even if I was going "What the h*ll?" a lot. It took me 7 hours for ONE play through, and there are a TON of other plot threads available that actually change things, making for some great replayability.
??? Uh... I feel like this one is misunderstood. And I say that based on the other few reviews I'm seeing so far on steam. First, I will guess that people who reviewed didn't like (or don't like anymore now that they're adults) so much power rangers or super sentai series. That's not my case. I still enjoy them from time to time and just to be clear... this whole title is one BIG reference to those series that includes a LOT of fans-services.
So of course the writing is childish, of course it is cliche and of course it goes a little everywhere in order to make enough references (teenagers with attitude and stuff) to the whole genre. So yes in this way it DOES indeed fulfill its job admirably.
The thing I will criticize is the pacing. It kinds of slow down every chapter due to the episodic format and it does break the immersion a bit. Some passage do feell a litlle rushed or blank but the vast majority of the work is a proof of love to the super sentai hero genre.
If you're searching something logic or mature here you're just missing the whole point (the whole point being you're a chosen one even though that part is actually explained "scientifically" lol) ! But then, the story HAS its own amount of plot twists and progressively become more mature and dark near the end.
I had a blast with it even though there are some flaws obviously. But please just don't go and misjudge the thing just because you didn't understood it was based on a very specific genre. The description of the work does not hide it and nothing justify criticizing the genre here.
I'm going to give it a thumbs down.
The theme is unoriginal. As I was playing it, I couldn't help but think of how similar it was to Power Rangers/Beetleborgs. You got the ol Red, Blue, Black, Green, Pink, White, Gold user line up. You got the guardian creature who grants you colored power armor with enhanced strength & agility. You got the running theme to dress in the same color clothes as your power armor. You got your focus on martial arts, high school angst, cheesy romance and last but not least.... check this... a huge team robot!!! MIGHTY MORPHING POWER RAAANGERS!!! *cough* sorry... I mean TOTEM FORCE USERS!!!! If it weren't for the far superior near godlike regeneration rate, an ability to fly with wings like archangel & ride motorcycles up the side of buildings like Ghost Rider, I'd be wondering if the ideas weren't merely stolen & renamed. Oh wait.
More than that tho, I can't stomach the Author's writing. It comes off like it was written by a chunky comic enamored 14 year old with superhero posters all over their room. Everything is 'cool' 'awesome' amazing'. I heard those adjectives so much before I even reached the half way point, my eyes started spinning in my head. It's like 'Ooo gawd this is sooo awesome I have supar powers!!! This is sooo frikin cool!! Frikin Amazing man, I'm a supar hero!!! Wooo cool powers!!! Oh my gawd look what I can do, this is frikin AWESOME!!!!! Oh you have powers too!? COOOOOOL This is soooo AWESOME!!!!' *eye roll* Yeah, the main character's personality was that annoying for me. There's even a scene where they ask to ride some guys motorcycle, they get a 'no' in response and they reply with 'Please'. At that moment, I had an image of some fat kid with a fro begging to play an older kids gameboy. It was abundant in cringe. But then again, the mc is 15. Maybe I can't relate because I don't remember being that excitable or beta at 15.
The ad nauseum sequence of adjectives aside, the Author does a terrible job of plot lead up and pops out the deus ex machinas like pinata candy.
- You gain your powers right off the bat by sneaking into an armed government facility (yes at 15) from some random thing asking for help in a dream. No real reason given why you feel the need to put yourself in such deadly danger other than 'you have to know the truth' or 'You have a feeling.'
- You're forced into random unnatural situations to reveal your identity. Such as when 3 people randomly popped up to hurt me and my comrades on our way to school and my armor activated (despite it being stated I had the power to will it into existence when I wanted) without my consent and outed myself. Then there's the business after the tournament when the armor activates for a false alarm and after that when the class president, who I barely even know, takes it upon herself to turn my birthday into a witch hunt trial to find out my identity.
- The random martial arts tournament you're forced to enter is a fishing trap set up to capture you by the very government agency who let you go for breaking into government property with a slap on the wrist to begin with.
- and lets not forget hacking a military encrypted government usb by just rewriting an artist name on a picture in l337 out of the blue. That... just doesn't compute. The creative juices must have been fumes at that juncture.
It's like looking at a puzzle with mismatched pieces being forced together with a hammer. Gave me a headache.
Wow this story was amazing, with so many twists and turns, and every time I thought it was over, and upset cause I just knew i had failed and gotten a bad end, it kept on! Not only that but i could see where there were so many different pathes i could have taken even as I was trying to stick to the one I was on. I will definetly be playing this one again, and probably again. For those like myself who like the dating/romance/persuing options, there are alot of them. I stuck with my origional boi, cause thats just the way I am, but I Noticed all the other options, and I will definely be checking up on them in future play throughs (hey is that cute red head a posibility, you know the one that just meditates.... no idea why he caught my attention, but ill definetly try the flirt option next time lol)
In a word if you like CYO's this one is a definite winner!
P.S for those who like me play alot of these, I honestly was so into the story i didnt even bother to look to see if there was a stat screen, or to look at it until literally less than 10 minutes from finishing the game. Its that good.
More of Power Rangers type of superhero story. Initially it is written as if targeted to kids, a bit amateurish or childish. Then it became more mature like the writer himself grew up while writing this up. Also its has apocalyptic-political conspiratorial- cult mystic written as part of plot. Seemed like the story and plot was all over the place with lack of focus. But it was an interesting fast paced read nonetheless as the story developed very fast .Quite long also, well worth money. Not the best, no regrets either.
7/10 Got Martha achievement unintentionally. I literally laughed out loud.
