It's got fluid combat, a pretty flexible class system, interesting lore and world to explore, and strong visuals (vibrant, colorful art style). My biggest complaint is that KoA's chock-full of fetch and kill quests that become repetitive real fast. The story's also not very memorable; it starts off strong, but it kind of fizzles out towards the end.

Overall, it's a fun game, but I think it would've been a lot better if it had co-op/multiplayer, as at times it feels like an MMO-lite.

Kingdoms of Amalur Reckoning Review: Avoid this, I reckon

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning was fated to be a disappointment, it seems. The only visionary thing about it is that it pioneered the “AI-generated” aesthetic 10 years before it became a real thing. I can appreciate that this game took time and talent to create, but other than that, I’m genuinely at a loss when it comes to positive things to say about it. Don’t be fooled by the flashy animations and the off-brand Warcraft look, this game is absolutely not worth your time, even if you get it for free. You might get more out of spending your money on a cereal box and playing the games on the back.

Disclaimer:
Annoyingly, Reckoning is off the store for purchase now that Re-Reckoning is out - however this remaster constitutes mostly visual, and a few gameplay changes, so the experience will likely be only marginally better than this version.
Please note that this review does not comment on the DLC as due to some bug I couldn’t find a fix for, I was locked out of them.

Steam Deck Performance:
It runs fantastically on the deck, but there’s this weird flaw on the native controller layout that gives you massively reduced access to abilities, so I actually recommend emulating PC controls instead.

I really wanted to like KOA:R. I started playing it first during a time when I was craving a brain break and needed that fantasy RPG itch scratched. If that’s all you want, and don’t plan on finishing it, then the game does deliver on that promise. There is also something to be said about the game’s lack of microtransactions. KOA:R truly is a relic of an EA of the past, before they chose the evil route. Indeed, KOA:R might deserve the benefit of the doubt due to its age. At least, that’s what I would have said if Skyrim and Dark Souls, two of the most innovative and influential action RPGs of the era, hadn’t released the year before KOA:R did.

Some fun! Some fun! A kingdom for some fun!

KOA:R commits the worst sin of all in art: it is bland. If it were a flavour, it would taste the way an unseasoned bowl of rice tastes to a COVID patient. Worse yet, not only is it bland, it’s long: Imagine now said patient had to eat through a full saucepan of unseasoned rice. Problems can be found everywhere: The map is too big but your movement is too slow. Dungeons variety is near-nonexistent, and their layout is about as intricate as a set of train tracks. Quests feel like an ever-growing list of chores, while never deviating from the same three types. This kind of “chore-based” gameplay can be fun when tied to interesting characters, stories and rewards, but KOA:R does none of that. Instead, I was constantly questioning why I was even doing the quests. I’m still not sure I know the answer.

I see a lot of people in the Steam reviews for this game who will agree with the above, but praise the game anyway for its combat. Maybe this was even the reason I bought the game so many years ago. I don’t know what I was expecting, but it would have had to be bloody good to excuse all the other problems. It wasn’t. KOA:R has well-animated and engaging combat that is further enhanced by a fairly in-depth skill tree system, and at first this is rather fun. From this angle, it seems like I am praising it too, but much like a fresh car smell, the novelty of combat wears off quickly.
The problem with KOA:R’s combat is that underneath all the flashy animations and skills, it suffers from deeper balancing flaws. Firstly, you and enemies can stagger each other out of nearly any animation, which means that lone enemies will be spam-clicked until dead, while groups of enemies and spellcasters will stunlock the player into oblivion. The lack of in-depth weapon combos, boring spells, and the constantly repeated, overly tanky enemies makes most encounters feel like spam-clicking your way through a jar of honey. Defensive options have problems too: parries have strange windows that don’t work too often and clunky animation transitioning makes it hard to dodge in time. Reckoning mode, the kind of “power fantasy ultimate move” unique to the main character that every game of the era seemed to adore, is an absolute joke: An uninteresting time dilation plus damage boost that turns your combat into a DPS check and even more of a spamfest. It also sports an uncommon bug that might softlock you by clipping you into the ground, if you’re lucky.
Reckoning mode being such an abject failure was of particular disappointment for me, as the one truly cool thing KOA did was its idea of a world in which all fate is predetermined. Sadly, the writers managed to mess this up in the story too.

A story fated to fail

This last section is particularly salient, as I have a soft spot for this genre of fantasy. KOA:R’s writers had some great ideas, too. In Amalur, everyone’s lives are railroaded by fate, in particular the Fae, who relive their stories over and over for eternity.
Sadly, these ideas will always remain as simple ideas, as the game refuses to explore anything remotely interesting concerning them. Characters who have their fate unbound react with indifference, while Fae simply accept the changing world with a shrug. Take the fateweaver Agarth, a major character whose entire life was dedicated to interpreting the immutable weave of fate. When you save him from his predestined death, and unbind him from the weave he built his life on, he simply shrugs it off and says “I guess I can do what I want now”.
To make things worse, these good ideas are outliers, nuggets of gold in the trough of slop that is the rest of KOA’s world and narrative. The main storyline is a simplistic “walk here and kill the bad guy” story. Every character sounds like they came from fantasynamegenerators.com and the sheer quantity of them along with repetitive character design makes it hard to tell them apart, and easy to get lost in the narrative. Every faction is just a copy-pasted RPG archetype, and their questlines play out in a functionally identical manner: railroad you through a bunch of fetch quests before offering you a paltry singular choice 10 minutes before the questline ends. A choice that boils down to what permanent buff you want, and what NPCs will attack you on sight. The world barely reacts to your actions and choices, as immutable as the hundreds of talking rocks I tracked down so that I could listen to even more badly rhyming lore dumps that I instantly forget.
Beyond that, what more is there to say? The voice actors sound like they are reading meeting minutes with a Voicemod effect slapped over them. The world feels purposefully built around the game’s obsession with emptiness and fetch quests: Large open spaces sprinkled with the same enemies you have fought 50 times already. Bosses almost always reskinned enemies with some extra VFX slapped on, while exciting, “special” areas usually just wind up being the same copy-pasted dungeon layout everything else uses.

Something bizarre happened as I finished Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. As the credits rolled and I booted up NG+, I realized I had never played the DLC, and had never gotten a prompt for it. I did some research, tried everything I could think of, and concluded my copy was somehow broken. The ensuing sense of relief I felt was enormous. My time with Kingdoms of Amalur, I realized, had been a long and toxic abusive relationship. To put it clearly, this game is not good. I couldn’t recommend this and, given their lack of meaningful changes, any of the remasters to anyone in good faith unless you’re a masochist with time to waste like me. Just thank the stars we live in a world unbound to fate, and use your free will to choose not to buy this dumpster fire of an RPG.

1/6 - Horrendous

If you enjoy late 2000s RPGs, you'll probably like this one. The story's decent, and the combat and customization really shine (even if the AI isn't very bright). However, do note: if you try to run the game over 1080p, you'll have UI issues (e.g., you won't be able to view your quest log).

Ok, 12 years late to the punch and this version isn't even sold anymore, so I'll cut some corners =D

The bad:
Productions values were ok at the time but didn't age well. Game balance is weak, with many builds that trivialize everything. There's way too much side content for how much of it is needed to progress. There's an absurd training system which encourages you not to invest in the skills you want so you can benefits from trainers. This feels like it's been designed by unsupervised game design interns. Very bad 3Cs. The camera is floaty and transitions poorly, character controls are sometimes painfully irresponsible, and stunlocking with hit reaction animation (both inflicted and received) is just horrid. Coming from recent titles like Wayfinder, combat is comparatively dismal. Lack of level recommendation in the quest log is jarring. Terrible usability, only 4 spells shortcuts with a controller, when you have dozens of useful ones unlocked. The mage shield skill is bugged and annoying, hits environment, loses shards.

The good:
Refreshing to see good looking female characters. One of them even dresses sexy (gasp! sacrilege). The story is fine, the voice acting and animations ok for the period.

Verdict:
In 2024, this is a hard pass. It was probably a 70% game when it released, but today, there are better ways to spend your time.

The original Fable was one of my favorite Action RPGs, and when I first played the demo of this game on Xbox 360, it reminded me so much of that game that I went out and bought it. Much longer and less focused on straight morality than Fable, this is a satisfying 75+ hour romp through a very detailed fantasy world.

Written-by Mr. Kim Dotcom, circa August 18, 2024:

"This may be the most important post you’ll ever read because it provides a simple explanation about why our world is being destroyed, by design.

I’m not antisem itic nor a N azi. I’m simply a former hacker with great analytical skills who understands what’s happening in the world.

At the end of this post I will quote from a world domination plan. You will recognize the truth immediately because that’s what’s currently happening in the world. Today’s reality suggests that this plan is real.

When you do your own research you will learn that the origin of this plan was discredited and that the alleged creators have nothing to do with it. But who was the person providing the key evidence?

It was allen dulles. The man who raised money from US industrialists to fund Ad olf Hi tler, his Na zi party and his war. The man who later became the director of the CIA during Kennedy and the head of The Warren Commission that investigated the Kennedy Incident. Why would anybody believe a man with such a questionable character?

The protocols of the elders of zion have unquestionably borrowed ideas from several authors but you can say that about most important writings throughout history. It was called a fabrication and is one of the first uses of the term ‘conspiracy theory’.

Why do zionists have a massive over-representation in the media, politics, banking, and world-affairs? How did such a small community get to dominate all the centers of power and information?

Why can isreal ignore UN resolutions, international-law, and commit a genocide in Ga za, to standing ovations in the US Congress? Why is isreal acting like it is above the law seemingly without any fear of consequences.
Read some of the alleged zi onist world domination plan below and compare it with reality. Is all of this just a coincidence?

“Our power will be more invincible than any other, because it will remain invisible until the moment when it has gained such strength that no cunning can any longer undermine it.”

“We shall absolutely control the media, so that not a single announcement will ever reach the public without our control. In this way we shall have a sure triumph over our opponents, for without the media, they are helpless.”

“We will distract the brainless heads with vain conceptions, fantastic theories, rotten amusement, games, and filthy passions, so that they will be unable to use what intellect they have. They will never suspect that they have been stage managed by us.”

“We shall establish huge monopolies, so that all will go to ruin when the political smash-up comes. We must, at all cost, deprive them of their lands, we must lower wages, and raise the prices of all necessities of life.”

“We shall create an economic crisis, which will stop dealings in all exchanges and bring industry to a standstill. We shall throw onto the streets whole mobs of workers, simultaneously, all over the world, who will rush to loot property and delight to shed blood.”

“In our government, besides ourselves, there must only be the mass of enslaved people, a few billionaires devoted entirely to us, police, and soldiers. To do this we must create chaos and hostilities, and we must use all deceit, treachery and falseness, possible. Our greatest weapon is the media.”

“We shall establish one king over all of earth who will annihilate all causes of discord, such as borders, nationalities, religion, state debts, etc., and get peace and quiet which cannot be secured in any other way. To attain our ends we must foment trouble in all countries, utterly exhaust all of humanity with hatred, struggle, envies, torture, starvation, and diseases, so that the people will be forced to take refuge in our complete sovereignty.”

“Our master card has been, is, and shall be, the destruction of all privileges, on the ruins of which we shall set up our absolute autocracy.”

Please be mindful that most pro-isreal comments on social media are generated by the largest bot network in the world, not by real people.

Specifically, this is what has been done, using video-games to brain-wash, indoctrinate, demoralize, and fractionalize, young(er) people who would otherwise be focused-on family and community, is IN-YOUR-FACE, now, and is openly-known to be happening with the games we buy from Steam, and others.

Search for this article using the following search-terms: Zero Hedge "Leftist Consulting Firms Exposed Behind Wokification Video Games":

""How the tables have turned in the past decade. If you were involved at the inception of the culture war around a decade ago then you probably remember an abrupt and distinct change in popular media from 2015 to 2016. There was a surge of far-left and feminist propaganda in movies, television, commercials and even video games that was highly aggressive, perhaps even militant. Some people spoke out at the time and questioned the motives behind the trend, only to be smacked down by angry mobs of activists and corporate journalists with accusations of “conspiracy theory” and “bigotry.”

In other words, their claim was that you were not seeing what you thought you were seeing. There was no feminist agenda. There was no gay or trans agenda. There was no socialist messaging. It was only in your head.
If there is one rule that encompasses all political endeavors, it is this: If you have to hide your intentions and lie about your goals when trying to spread your ideology, then something is probably very wrong with your ideology. This is exactly the problem inherent in the attempt to spread woke doctrine – Activists and provocateurs never ask anyone if they want to hear about woke ideas; they seek to force everyone to see and hear woke ideas, to the point that people cannot escape the messaging.

Even more insulting is the fact that even though most of these activists claim to be fans of the media they target, they are usually discovered to be frauds. Woke ideologues have little sincere interest in nostalgia, movie making, video games, comic books, etc. They only care about these properties because they see them as a vehicle to be co-opted, infected and dominated. Leftists know well that if they control pop culture they can control the thinking of the next generation."...

Its nice that you have enough options when it comes to creating your own weapons an Armor.

I like the flow with plenty of options and side quests. There are entire side chains to play with constant leveling. The flexibility of the skills is also impressive. It's a be-whatever you want to be kind of RPG. The only thing I would want is more dialog options for the Fae.

Kinda generic and repetitive, because it was originally was meant to be an mmo. But it's still fun.

It has better melee combat than the Witcher 3
