I give the game a cautious endorsement, but beware of an issue with this game regarding refresh rates. Set the refresh rate of your monitor to 60 Hz, or you will have a bad time. The characters movement speed is chained to the refresh rate. The higher the refresh rate of your monitor, the faster they will move. At 144Hz, the game isn't playable.
First off, the game wouldn't let me tab out at all, which I consider kind of necessary. Like a lot of small games, there's no options menu and trying to set windowed from Windows and Steam launch options doesn't work. I had to use DXWnd to force it to a window. Works okay once you set up all the options, but it looks like that prevents Steam from tracking in-game time.
There are some other smaller issues, but I still enjoyed the game. This is one of the few games where I didn't hate the Helicopter-style controls. It feels like you have way more finesse than you usually do. Those sections are hard, but at least it's not because the controls are awful.
The platforming parts are pretty fun too, I liked the moveset. And the aesthetic is great!
It's a good platform game, it looks like a lot of fun.
I have somewhat mixed feelings about Ikao, The Lost Souls. On the one hand, the game is a challenging platformer and I mostly had a great time with it. But the game is far from perfect. In is my opinion, the main issues are:
- The core game mechanics feel unpolished and would benefit from some tweaking. You play as two characters, each with a different skill set. The two-tailed fox can walk, jump, double-jump, and teleport (I did not particularly like playing as the fox). The ghost can walk, jump and fly (playing as the ghost is a lot of fun). These are basic skills you will encounter in many platformers. What I disliked was that the jumps of both characters (but especially the ghost) are always of the same height, there is no ‘short jump’ or something similar. This prevents you from jumping in a lot of places because you would instantly die on the spikes above.
- The double-jump is not very responsive, if you try to double-jump too quickly after the initial jump the fox will not respond at all to your input.
- The fox will insist on completing his jump-animation (a roll) first before doing the double-jump, so the fox hovers in mid-air for a split second. This prevents you from doing some tight and speedy platforming around flying enemies, you always need to keep a large margin otherwise you will most probably collide and die.
- The hit boxes around certain hazards are a bit too large. All these issues make for a lot of cheap deaths.
- There are 95 proper levels plus and ending. You need to complete each level before the next level is unlocked. The game get progressively more difficult, which obviously is good thing. However, some levels are way more difficult than others. I found the levels 75 to 85 to be much more difficult than the final 10. I am almost certain that many players will get stuck halfway through the game without any possibility to tune down the difficulty, or skip a level. To be attractive to players of all skill levels, it would have preferable if for instance not all levels need to be completed one at a time to progress through the game – it is often better to take the tried and tested approach where for instance there are secondary (but very difficult) objectives in each level, so skilled players are properly challenged but if you find the level too difficult you can just skip the secondary objective for the moment, go on with the next levels and return to the difficult level when you finally got gut.
- The story is a bit weird and after seeing the ending twice I still do not completely understand.
[*]There are a few other issues, but these are only minor. I did not particularly like the art style, nor the music, but that is totally subjective. Another thing is that you can’t alt-tab out of the game, better not try that or you risk crashing your PC. The game also messes with high-DPI settings for 4K screens.
I don’t think this game is for everybody. It’s a pretty challenging platformer for fans of the genre, and if you do not like bullet hell or a screen full of rotating buzzsaws (often both, plus many additional hazards), you might wanna skip this one. Rating 8 out of 10 for the levels with the white ghost, 5/10 for the other levels.
Ikao is a hardcore platformer/bullet hell game with a nice visual style, a minimistic story, and 2 different play modes.
You start the game as a blue two-tailed fox who has lost his memory, so of course the best thing to do is just walk to the right and hope you eventually uncover your memory and your purpose. As you progress through the game you will randomnly run into a spirit and your character will somberly put his head down and have a brief memory of his former love. Progression through the game slowly reveals the relationship between the 2 and what happens and eventually ends in a surprisingly somber tone that I completely did not expect. I won't get into any details here but the story is told well enough and does not get in the way of the gameplay.
The gameplay is broken down into 2 different styles. About half the game has you playing as the two-tailed fox, these levels play like a standard platformer. Your fox can jump, double jump, and stick to certain walls. The other half of the game is played as a white spirit who can jump and float around infinitely by tapping the X button. Although your character is flying the best way to describe the control in these levels is like an underwater level in a Mario game, but you can jump off of surfaces as well. Control in both playstyles is super tight, and control of both characters switches back and forth. So you will play x number of levels as the fox, then the spirit and so on.
There are about 100 levels or so in this game and it is an incredibly challenging game. The game starts out simple enough and has a pretty nice difficulty curve but it gets really hard. Every level is riddled with spikes, buzzsaws that seemingly reach forever, and cannons that shoot endless streams of bullets at you. The amount of stuff going on at any given time gives the game a very bullet hell feel to it, which is odd for a platformer but works really well. The levels are designed that there are virtually no safe spots and everything kills you in one hit, you need to be both quick and cautious to navigate some of these nightmarish levels but the feeling of beating some of these levels is incredibly satisfying. You will die alot, but the game offers instant respawns that make you want to jump right back in and give the level one more shot.
There are also orbs scattered throughout the levels. I have no idea what these orbs do and I typically am the kind of player who just ignores out of the way collectables but for some reason I felt compelled to collect all of these orbs. I believe I got them all and I'm not really sure if it did anything, so maybe there is some greater purpose to them, or maybe they are just there for the completionist in you, I don't really know.
What I do know is that Ikao was an amazing game. It retails for $2 and for that price I was expecting some crappy flash game but decided to give it a shot anyway and I'm really glad I did. The game is very unique, very well made, and insanely hard. Definitely worth a playthrough if you are into hardcore platformers.
I gave this game a try since it was on sale and the price itself was appealing to me.
Actually It's a very challenging game (went myself nearly to frustration but there was always the motivation to keep going). and I loved the design of the levels and such.
If you love platformers and a good challenge, this might be your game.
Gave this game a genuine try. There's some good aspects to it, and ideas present, but it suffers from the issue that plagues many indie games, in that it's just a bit overly "safe" without really ever impressing me. The movement mechanics are pretty bare-bones and the level design doesn't really allow this game to thrive, at least as far as I got (like the 4th little chunk of levels).
This is made worse by some mediocre presentation. Visually, the levels change very little in between, even when mechanics are added. The design of the levels is often pretty dull and overly simplistic. The obstacles changed very little from level to level, and there really wasn't much character to any of it; the character art in game really did not impress me, some of the animations just didn't sit right and weren't satisfying to use (the double-jump or the floating ability) and the minimalist storytelling did little to immerse me into this game (and the lack of a cutscene skip feature is kinda upsetting), and you end up switching characters with no real sense of rhyme or reason. Also, this game has some atrocious sound design; the sound effect for footsteps made me want to mute the game, and the music was just incredibly slow atmospheric/ambient music played ad nauseum, with no real soul to it.
Furthermore the game seemed to have a bug any time I ran it where if I tried to alt tab, the window would open a couple seconds later, and this even forced a PC restart.
It is a 2$ game so I can't really say I regret giving it a go nor that I expected it to be fantastic, but it still didn't feel worth it. There was effort put into the game, but I felt it was missing any real soul to keep me interested, at least for the hour-fifteen or so I played it.
