A well done, high tech superhero-esque flying firearm combat game. The locomotion is unique and awesome - flight feels natural and fantastic. Graphics are nice, sound is good, and the music slaps. Runs smooth and stable for me.
Only a handful of enemy types, and the world is just a wide open cube with some hovering asteroids. I'd love to see real "levels" to give the flight some sense of scale: Whipping past skyscrapers, or through a giant alien mothership with pipes and corridors.
Overall, this is the best free flight combat experience I've had in VR to date. Thumbs: UP!
Genuinely surprised it's taken me this long to write a review about this game, and since I recently hopped back in to play it again, felt it was about time to write one.
EASILY one of the best VR games that you can buy right now. It's simple, addicting, and fun as fuck to fly around and dodge projectiles of all kinds. Once you get the pretty simple controls down you'll practically be shooting enemies behind your back as you zoom around at mach 5, weaving between crystal and enemy. The soundtrack is a fucking banger and the sound design is tight as hell. I only wish that one day the developer makes a return to this game, it's easily one of my favorites, and I hope they pick it back up in the future.
Felky Fun Meter
|--------|--| [8/10] Very fun!
- Being able to use different weapons was nice;
[b]- Completing mini-quests and leveling up so the game isn't just "Get the highest score" was nice;
- Controls felt smooth and satisfying (at least on Index).
Played this to get used to Motion Sickness in VR and it did its job :D
I only don't recommend this if you have wired-VR without a pulley-system since it requires a lot of real-life rotating to be efficient at navigating and shooting enemies and you will spend more time fighting your cable than your enemies :3
super simplistic and super fun time waster of a game.
-
Props:
endless replay ability, perks to unlocks, different weapons, you can combine weapons, pull off some insane stuns, and escape maneuvers
music is nice and really gets you in the feeling of zooming around and shooting stuff.
Boss! there's a boss, still have no idea how to defeat it but im still trying!
Enemy's drop health orbs which can be picked up and even perks to help with it.
There's a leaderboard! if you like to be challenged or challenge yourself/against other's! this has it!
-
downsides?
map isn't much, its kinda rocks around a single big dome like area.
once you see all the enemy's that's about it.
very few select weapons (5 at max including the smg like weapon you always have)

Is this game worth 12.99?
yea, Id say its worth it, the game has deff been given tons of love by the developer, well done and smoothed out IMO. very pretty to look at and fun as hell to play once you get the hang of the flying mechanic!
Overall a fun little wave shooter. Awesome work a 1 person dev team.
1. Flight mechanic feels great! Love flying around in the game.
2. Art style works. looks awesome.
Things to work on/improve?
1. Wish the arena is bigger, keep running into walls.
2. Better visual/audio signal when enemy is close by.
3. maybe let user customize the GUI layout? I had a hard time dealing GUI that are locked in front of the camera position
4. Not sure how to describe it, but snap turning with joystick feels a bit awkward
I love this game already. It's insanely fun, but also has a good level of challenge that I was not expecting. 8.5/10, UI still needs a bit of work and to show you things a bit better.
The flying, shooting and sense of speed all feel great, but the environment feels so empty, no variety in the ennemies, there is not much to unlock and there are no real updates adding content. Game feels like it should be in early access waiting for content update, but it is a full release... You can have a look at the reviews, even the positive ones all have few hours on record.
What an amazing high-energy action packed 3D grid shooter this is!
I've been waiting all my life for this one. (I'm nearly 59)
I've always been fascinated by (neon) grid shooters and was wondering how far you can push this concept. Well this one exceeded my expectations by far!
The feel of actually being there and high speed dogfighting the laser-turrets in total 3D freedom of VR flight is mindboggling and very addicting. Many kudos to the developer! :-)
For such a simple wave based shooter, its done very well. Movement and flight are the highlight of this game, but it wouldn't mean much if enemies weren't fun to fly and shoot at. Thankfully there is just enough enemy variety to keep you on your toes. The final boss is epic to fight, but unfortunately the game doesn't have any new content beyond that. If the devs were willing, they could keep adding new enemy types and a few new bosses to make this game feel truly complete. This is my go-to VR game for short sessions, good for 10-30 minutes while waiting for friends or downloading other games. Great for the price too, a must buy if on sale for >$10
I've been playing VR consistently since 2017, and its been a LONG time since a game has blown me away like this. I really really can't explain how awesome it feels to whip a 180 mid air and gun down the drones on your tail. I'd love to see more modes, maps, or power ups, but the game doesn't need it at all. Not to mention, the Soundtrack SLAPS. I bought a SOUNDTRACK, that's a first lmao.
TLDR: Get it and enjoy the hidden gem before it blows up.
So addicted to this right now!
I'm quite new to VR, and so far it's been fun but I dunno? It didn't feel as "free" as I thought it would be? But then I played this and OH MAN! The movement is soooooo right! From the get go I felt like some kind of rooting tooting flyin' shootin' anime super-solider! (The soundtrack may have also helped with my delusions of badassery too?)
There was definitely a difference, or like "a-ha" moment after doing the tutorials. Like before I think I was playing it a bit safe? But then after, it all clicked! This was it! I really felt as free and nimble as I imagined VR would let you be!
So thanks for making me feel like Neo after he uploaded that floppy disk to his brain! And by Neo I mean John Wick! And by John Wick I mean that dude in Vanquish! And by that dude in Vanquish I mean Superman after he finally got a gun licence!
In fact all those things!
I like VR games with flying, I like good music and shooting one-handed guns. But the amount of content in this game is so small that it is more like a tech-demo, not a proper game. Let's describe issues in detail.
1. The gameplay and controls
While the controls and flying mechanic feels mostly OK (played on Vive) there are many things which could be done better. The combat area is big and empty and most of the time you close the distance. Stationary enemies always spawns too far, while the moving ones are always on your tail no matter how fast you where flying. Fast in-game movement is cancelled out by the distances.
There are static obstacles floating around but they don't participate in a gameplay. It is not feasible to hide behind them and there is no challenge to navigate through them like through some asteroid belt. They don't work as decorations as well: all obstacles looks the same - providing no distinct memorable points on a level.
The shooting doesn't feel rewarding: the sound and visual effects are not "crunchy". The boosted shot sound is quieter than a regular shot - why?!
Sights feel useless especially when boosted mode is active and that floating magical rune on a muzzle obstructing the view. The tracer effects of regular shots are white making them hard to see against the background. The overall short length of pistols makes it even harder to aim.
Typical engage distances feels too far for the weapons: you always forced to fly closer before shooting and new enemies are always spawned all across the combat area. The enemies either small or fast making it hard to hit without "spray and pray". At least that feels inline with useless sights...
2. The content
Can't decide what to name first. The game is lacking content on every single aspect: there is not many types of enemies, very few weapons, no singleplayer campaign nor story, the levels are empty with no memorable landmarks or decorations. Game feels engaging first 3 minutes and then it becomes repetitive and boring. No matter how many enemies you killed - the area remains filled with foes providing no sense of progress. And then it suddenly says "level X completed" when you killed some predefined number of enemies. The game offers you to replay the same level again and again with gradually increasing difficulty and that's it. No interesting locations, no story, no meta-game with upgrades and loot.
TL;DR
The price is way to high for what game offers. With so little content it is a glorified tech demo at most, not a proper game. Going to ask a refund.
Airborn was a fun VR game to fly around and shoot for a little while. There isn't really much to do in the game though since it's basically rinse and repeat. I did have fun so I do recommend checking it out if you have a VR. I just think picking it up on sale would be better. Maybe down the line we'll see more content and I'd also love to see some achievements.
Last thing is if you have a standing fan available I suggest having it blow towards you while playing. Really makes it feel like you're flying through the air.
I'm sorry but this got really boring really fast. I wanted to like the game, but as of now there is no content other than trying to survive as long as possible. If levels and missions get added in the future, I'll re-evaluate my review
Mechanics are too clunky being forced to constantly choose between flying or shooting, there's no fully fleshed out game here, lot of staring upward is not good for the neck, it feels like a tech demo that gets old really fast.
Awesome game! Every time those spaceships come in close up, they hide behind me, and shoot me in the back. When I turn around to shoot at them, they quickly whisk themselves behind me again, and keep shooting me in the back. Chickens...fight like real spaceships!
A dream come true and would love to discuss codevloping something I've had planned using your engine and our IP (and linking in with our card game "Infinite Engine") with my company Lightmare Studios... The flight is perfect, we could work together to add much depth & variety.
Either way, I will be giving everyone your game to try to experience the best of VR.
The game is very easy to get into, if you don't understand something then the tutorials are quick and easy to understand, and There aren't many controls so it's easy to remember everything.
The flight is surprisingly immersive and i often forget that i am even standing. The combat feels good, and with the options for the loadout you can pick a focus that you enjoy.
Every enemy requires a unique way to deal with them. For example the laser turret is tanky when attacking with unfocused weapons but is dispatched quickly with the shotgun focus. You will the find other ways to deal with the various opponents as you play, and to me that's part of the fun.
All in all this game has a sort of arcade feel to it that i enjoy and recommend.
Wonderful arcade shooter that requires you to keep your wits and act fast.
VR is great about putting you in the thick of a battle, but many games still struggle to empower you in ways that don't fall back on flat screen conventions or give you a convoluted control scheme that gets in its own way. The better games rise above those limitations, inserting you into an exciting world and giving you fun and interesting abilities to use. Jet Island and Slinger VR come to mind as games that have done this well.
Now, Airborn joins them.
Airborn puts you in the thick of battle with near perfect controls to juke and weave your way with one hand and shoot with the other. Just remember to check your six often for those drones that slip around behind you.
This is a relatively simple game, but the flight mechanics and the shooting is done very well. Even for full price it's worth the buy.
Beware though: As of yet there's a tutorial and a single game mode, so if you need all kinds of story this might not be the game for you.
If you're a big fan of shooting targets while flying at breakneck speeds, this is a no-brainer.
I just discovered this newly released game via Reddit.
When I first watched the trailer, I was apprehensive, as it looks very vomit inducing. It is not. I am quite sensitive to this sort of thing and I have had absolutely no reaction. How? No Idea, I don't question it.
Tutorial: I walked through the flying tutorial. It walked me through how to guide my dude through a relatively non conventional movement system. Interesting. a bit of a learning curve, but I'm old and figured it out. It's kinda amazing.
game play: I inadvertently started a level without going through the whole aiming/shooting guidelines and was simply blown away on the flying aspect of the game. "thrusters" on your hands are what propels you. One at a time, or two at a time for more speed. Gripping the controller (index) rather than pulling the trigger, pulls out your gun.... Two thrusters, , one thruster one gun, or two guns. Take your pick. Time your transitions good enough and you can "coast" through space as you spin around double wielding pistols, while shooting at space bastards. Its awesome that you can move in one direction, shoot in another direction, and still visually scan in all directions simultaneously.
I play in a large area so I'm not worried about space. This can be played from a standing position, but it is easy to lose track of your footing. There's no "pistol whipped" style swinging, but there is a bit of arm movement. You'll need to remain somewhat cognizant of your environment in small quarters, but completely playable still.
The soundtrack is awesome, the control system is amazing. It was literally released today, and the developers are listening to what players want and are willing to modify and patch as needed.
IMO, completely worth the purchase price as-is, and we know the minor deficiencies are going to be improved.
It feels like I'm ironman when I play this game, but in reality I'm sure I look like I'm swatting at bees WHILE BLASTING THROUGH SPACE SHOOTING AT SPACE-BAD-GUYS!
A+
Got a chance to play this for an hour and this is definitely a great VR game. Having to look behind you as you're trying to evade/track enemies, while flying forward, is a WONDERFUL sensation. Job well done. More people need to know about this game. Hopefully the dev has future content releases planned, because this could be up there with Beat Saber/Pistol Whip as my favorite VR games.
The music is solid (please do more!). The mechanics are simple, and it works well. I've been kinda dying for a little arcade flight sim/shooter game in VR and this will definitely scratch that itch.
If I had to nitpick something? It would just be that on Index, the controllers are EXTREMELY sensitive to being squeezed so sometimes I'll be flying and then the guns will appear cause I gripped it a little 'too hard'. Would be great to have a 'deadzone' or a way to up the sensitivity. Other than that, nothing bad to say about it in my first hour of playing.
Definitely worth the buy.
Great simple game. One of the best Wave-Based Rogue's I've "pick up and played".
Not sure how it will last, but I love it so far.
Feel = awesome
Music = Great Synth.
Menus are clear.
This will be my go-to game for showing off the VR experience.
Note: I wanted to change some controls, but the devs reminded me you can do that on the SteamVR dashboard. My one grief has been rectified. Great time.
Bought it on 10% discount, and very happy with how much fun I'm having.
