Hellish Quart is a local-only, physics-based sword fighting game. Set in 17th century Poland, it features a cinematic story and the most iconic sword fighter archetypes of this period.
With motion-captured fencing techniques and four gamepad buttons representing four attack angles, you'll need to use timing, technique, and speed to defeat your opponents. Choose from a variety of warriors and take part in cinematic story mode, arcade mode, safe sparring, quick fights, survival mode with online leaderboards, or local multiplayer. If you want to hone your sword fighting skills, you can spar with wooden weapons or train in modern HEMA gear. And for the ultimate experience, Hellish Quart also offers an optional VR mode.
Please note that the game is still in development and only supports local multiplayer.
physical sword fighting using Active Ragdolls
cinematic story
online leaderboards
realistic historical fencing techniques
optional VR mode
Hellish Quart utilizes active ragdolls and real-time physics to get you the ultimate fencing experience. You can attack from four different angles using the four gamepad buttons. Different button combinations enable special attacks and combos. When you are not attacking, your character automatically assumes a defensive stance, blocking your opponent's attacks using the autoguard feature. Proper timing, technique, speed, measure, and wits are all crucial to winning, just like in real-world fencing.
The game is set in the historical 17th-century Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and the character models are based on 3D-scanned reconstructed clothes from that period. The single-player campaign, once completed, will be firmly rooted in the reality of life in the region. You will duel against Zaporozhian Cossacks, Polish Hussars, Tatars, Turkish Janissaries, Swedish Reiters, French Musketeers, and more.

This game kicks ass, full stop. This feels like a fighting that was tailor made just for history nuts like me.
Even if you're not a history nut, this game's combat feels genuinely so rewarding, and it's so in depth yet so simple.
Every single match feels as fresh as the first.
I love fighting games, and I am in love with Hellish Quart. If you're a fan of fighting games and you're not playing Hellish Quart, I actually feel sorry for you.
I'll say again, this game kicks ass!
Cool physics based fencing game, works great on deck
Its a fun fighting game with gameplay complexity and restrained particle effects. idk what else I could say.
This game is great, Technical, but not too much. Satisfying to win, Nice fighting styles, I hope they keep developing it!
Gra jest bardzo przyjemna lecz nie mogę jej teraz polecić bo to nie jest skończony produkt. Niech deweloperzy wezmą się za robotę.
I hate fighting games with dumb combo memorization. A lot slower and tactical approach with the original seting (not Japan). Easy to learn, hard to master and fun to play against friends. Online multiplayer not available due to physic simulations.
challenging at first but with practice, learning the moves, and selecting a character/weapon/style that suits you this becomes a fun and satisfying dual where a single move can result in victory or defeat.
Good so far. An online PVP mode would be desirable.
Long way to go, the Ai simply cheats half the time, reach is extremely inconsistent often the Ai will run straight onto your attack and take no damage, needs alot of work as of yey
Love it. Very unique fighting game, works great on the Deck.
Cool game but needs serious work.
It will always mess up when I'm backing up while parrying. Which is how you are meant to do it. What's the point if he swings so fast it won't let me block in time or if his blade goes through my block.
I'm giving this a bad review due to this game been in the oven for too long and they still adding unnecessary stuff instead of just finish off the game and then add the rest as updates (things like stoye mode, a ton of chars when 6-7 char would been fine, etc)
Okay, I actually never write reviews on Steam, but this is so good, that I simply have to.
Hellish Quart is an easy to learn, hard to master game. The combat feels great, the visuals, although still a bit rough around the edges, are alright (gore is pretty good if you're into it!). The swords feel dangerous, and because sometimes one hit is enough to end the fight (no health bar bullshit!) you insincitvely try to avoid the blade at all cost, as you would IRL. The story mode is compelling and does not feel like an afterthought (looking at you Battlefield and COD), and my only complaints are that there is only one chapter at the point of writing this review that ends on a cliffhanger (DEVS PLS HURRY, I CAN'T WAIT) and that the horse riding feels bad.
Overall, if you like fighting games, definitely worth checking out (though in the current state I'd wait for a sale).
8.5/10 - would behead a dude again.
Game tries hard to be as realistic as possible + you have a Tekken 3 type of combinational attacks listed during the pause menu.
Seems they're trying to implement VR option, but that will be buggy for many years no doubt :>
Only drawback - long loading time.
To avoid that - I play with synthetic weapons.
Such a cool game!! The more realistic, the better!
By the former Witcher 3 developer. Very realistic look at the medieval sword fighting. The game is still in early access though, they are expanding the characters story and adding a story mode. If that is what you like, Buy it.
Really, really enjoying this so far. The combat is excellent IMO, relying on 'tempo' as the main mechanic, and feels fluid, fun and challenging. I deeply appreciate the fencing scoring options around Double Hits also.
The realism is quite good overall, wounding opponents mid-bout slows them down accordingly, the sword styles are mixed, the fencers each feel unique, the varied game modes are enjoyable, and the historical Polish setting is immersive. Survival is my favourite, and the integrated Steam leader boards add extra replayability.
And the music! Bought the soundtrack edition on sale and am pleased with that decision.
Marta feels the closest to my experience fencing point weapons, and I love her moveset and style. Kalkstein a very close second.
However, the boss fights in the Arcade mode feel a little out of place / unbalanced with their extra tankiness and armour (Where the rest of the game rewards/punishes taking any kind of hit), but are presented well with character origin story and skippable cutscenes mid-fight and Polish voice acting (Currently).
I know it's Early Access, but I should mention the only performance problem I have; screen tearing on Mid graphics settings. I don't care that much about it, but you might.
Running on a 32" ultrawide + 4080 Super + Ryzen 7 5700X3D.
Foil fencer IRL and someone who doesn't like fighting games, so there may be some bias in opinion but I am looking forward to seeing where it goes!
So at first I wasn't so sure about this game, the mechanics aren't intuitive for me at least. However once I kept at it things started to fall into place bit by bit. And then when you do start getting wins its a rush. The story isn't very fleshed out yet but its still being developed so that makes sense of course and whats there I still found interesting. My biggest complaint is honestly the mechanics when you ride a horse during the main story, it feels awful. But overall a fun game with a lot of potential!
Great physics, looks like a real swordfight documented in HEMA books. Often one strike is all it takes. This is not a button masher, you need to pay attention to distance, angles, and timing. Support your local dev teams this is a small team doing incredible work.
The sounds, footwork, bladeweight all translate well in the game. Sometimes the interactions are a little awkward in up close blade bind situations and grappling, but its forgiveable. The bulk of offense is very tactical and satisfying. I really hope they add another longsword, Isabella is great fun, but the drunk monk is just annoying to play with. Would also be nice to see a polearm.
Early access so its not fully fleshed out content and character wise. The combat is clearly the focus and a lot of fun.
Far too inconsitent and probably will never be finished
This is the perfect game for me. As a HEMA practitioner, the input and attacks feel very accurate. More so than any game ive ever played.
Hellish Quart is super fun for anyone to play. Ive sank many hours trying to get to top 20 in survival mode.
Definitely pick it up!
10/10
PLEASE, CAN WE HAVEW AUDIO OPTIONS ACTUALLY WORKING AFTEWR ALL THESE YEARS?
tremendous game, i love evrything about it, but whatevs you set in audio options just doesnt save, i still hear background music.
Terrible.
pls fix that the actual settings would save please
(for the devs:i want sfx to play, but no bgm, even if i set bgm to 0 it will not save, help pls.:)
Me and the boys can't stop running sets. Just plain fun. Easy to grasp. Super fun. Just good.
The devs believe in their game, great to see consistent and quality updates over the years.
Great game, I only wish there was more gore and dismemberment.
game play is fun and intricate, vr is unplayable though.
Poorly balanced, to the point I literally have to hit the AI three times, but I fall over in one hit, even when I hit them in the throat but they hit me in the wrist.
Not to mention the fact that the longswords have the same effective range as the sabers, are slower, and seem to deal half the damage, for some reason.
This, combined with no real tutorial makes this game painful to play.
intuitive and is very akin to hema like combat. I love it!
An outstanding project!
Never have I played anything this realistic and profound.
This game offers various characters that all work differently with various weapons: sabers, rapiers, two handed swords and yet fighting feels so balanced and fun.
The story line and character appearances add so much more to the immersion of 17th century eastern Europe.
10/10 Game
The game is in early-ish stages, but it's a ton of fun to play.
(If I refunded the game it's due to IRL stuff unrelated to the game itself)
A unique take on the fighting genre that feels easier to get into as a newbie. It feels good.
the game is really an unique game, great graphics, playability is very good, the animations are amazing. A little hard to play, and the gameplay runs each "round" is a well successfull attack... different way to play. APPROVED
This game is very impressive and totally unique. It's set in the 1600s in Europe, and each character has a specific historical weapon and fighting style, all with a backstory. The moves are fully mo-capped with real HEMA techniques. The fighting system is very different from other games and takes getting used to, and there is a thorough tutorial to help with that. There are no health bars, and a round can be one or lost with one direct hit. There's a lot of game available already, with online multiplayer and the campaign mode making rapid progress.
Oh also, this is the only fighting game I know of that allows for custom refresh rates of 120hz or greater instead of cowering behind the simpering '60hz is necessary for competition' excuse all the other fighters lean on. Just like in FPS, there's no going back once you've tried it.
Title: "Missed Potential Wrapped in Frustration"
Hellish Quart has a unique premise—a physics-based sword-fighting game set in the 17th century—but its execution leaves much to be desired.
Pros:
Visuals & Atmosphere: The historical accuracy and visual style are commendable, with authentic 17th-century aesthetics.
Concept: A physics-based sword-fighting game is a fresh take in a genre dominated by button-mashing fighters.
Cons:
Clunky Controls: While the physics engine is innovative, the controls feel unresponsive and unpredictable. Many fights boil down to wild flailing rather than tactical swordplay.
Content Scarcity: The game feels unfinished. The roster is small, modes are limited, and there’s little to keep players engaged long-term.
AI Inconsistency: The AI swings between frustratingly overpowered and laughably ineffective, making single-player feel unfair or dull.
Multiplayer Issues: Online play is practically nonexistent, forcing reliance on local multiplayer, which isn't always an option.
Steep Learning Curve: While realism is a selling point, the lack of tutorials or accessible training features makes the game daunting for new players.
Final Verdict:
Hellish Quart has immense potential but feels more like an early-access project than a finished game. Its reliance on physics-based combat is ambitious but ultimately undermines the gameplay with awkward mechanics and shallow content. Fans of historical swordplay may appreciate the dedication to realism, but casual players will likely find the experience more frustrating than fun.
Rating: 5/10 - Great Idea, Poor Execution.
video game educational sword game! but drop that stupid beheading move everyone (minus shilelded lady) can just repeat over and over. It plays like a fun fighting game more than a through and through sword fighting lesson. But that's a personal problem. Great game, a blast with friends who have a mortal combat past. But no to that stupid move! Albeit hilariously fun as it is for the fist couple dozen times.
What a game!
This game is super playable despite being in early alpha because the core gameplay loop has been refined and expertly recreates the vibe of real HEMA and fencing with a beautiful moment of intensity.
What's not fleshed out:
- The story is very brief and involves a lot of awkward walking/horse riding which are clearly not a major focus for this game. The plot is solid though and the scenes are cute.
- The graphics are a bit rough for a game still yet to release in 2024. The lighting is nice and they serve the purpose, but the static faces and ugly meshes would be more at home in the mid 2000s than 2020s.
What IS fleshed out:
- The survival mode is an absolute rush and had me absolutely obsessed, and unlike a compulsion-inducing game which would keep you hooked through small dopamine hits, I felt pretty good after 4 straight hours of gameplay. The gameplay is genuinely rewarding of mastering the controls, while not being frustrating since most losses feel pretty fair.
- The variety of weapons and combat styles is much higher than I expected! I game to the game because I remembered enjoying the saber combat in the demo and expected more of the same. I ended up loving the epee and longsword characters even more though. Despite these characters being low-poly without much facial expression, each has a unique and engaging design, and feels distinct to play as and against. Even the saber fighters have fairly distinct feelings.
I can't wait to duel my friends!
Great game so far, still being improved.
The game's most important issue is one of tutorialization. While it does have a basic tutorial explaining how to attack and block, and a combo guide for the current character in the pause menu, I find that most fights I play still feel like rolling dice, even after 20h of practice. I assume that the game has depth I'm not understanding, however, this going largely unexplained is quite difficult, especially with the punishing nature of the story mode, where often you need to win many fights in a row. This has led to me grinding for a while to get past certain fights until I get lucky. As I said before, I believe this is unlikely to be just because the gameplay is chaotic and rather that I'm playing it wrong.
Extremely satisfying physics based combat - I love how they added a randomized "AI vs. AI" mode, so I can just set this as a brutal "Screen Saver", haha. Love the active development and slick animations!
This game is so awesome! it actually scratches the same itch as For Honor without making me wanna self die, I just wish it was on console so that I could play it with my friends.
This game is amazing in VR, with the added bonus of miniature and life size VR modes. I have a feeling it will improve my real world sword play by learning the moves and the tempo of battles. I do enjoy both regular PC desktop play and desktop play.
Hellish Quart is a game that has been wonderfully worked on to the last detail, and I absolutely love it.
Seeing new features and core gameplay elements being added to this product of a love for history and fencing warms my heart, and I'm super keen to see what features and characters will be added on release. I have high hopes. Although this game makes me sob with rage, it's still one of my favourite fighting games ever.
10/10.
Is very good - especially for the price and the fact that it's a very indie small team.
Kudos! Dobra Robota!
The core content that makes this game worth buying, that being the absolutely rich and accurate combat system, is fleshed out and brings a lot of variety, depth, and polish. There is a slight learning curve, but it is still easy to pick up for the amount of depth that is available. This is one of the greatest combat systems in a video game ever, period. If you are a person that cares about gameplay/combat above all else, you should pick this game up to experience it.
That being said, as a full game it is still quite lacking in content right now, but what's there is "good enough quality". The story mode, arcade ladder, and multiplayer are all limited. The UI could be a little better. The music is nothing to write home about. But, this is still an early access game. I didn't really care about these limitations for the most part. The devs are focused on the core of the game.
I recommend this game if you want really good action/combat. If that's not your thing, then there is not much for you here.
This is a wonderful game. If you are into HEMA it is even better as a way of seeing different systems. I recommended 10/10 wonderful indie title.
Amazing game, that also has a budding multiplayer community that hosts online tournaments.
this game is advertised as a vr game, which i assumed was sword fighting unfortunately you stand on the sidelines and play with a controller
Super fun and challenging but unfortunately it isn't saving any of my progress after i quit. Pretty disappointing
This game is sick if you're a nerd about fencing/dueling. so many techniques and fighting styles between the characters and most of them are easy to pick up on. I love longsword fencing so naturally i use isabella the most but i would love to see at least one more longsword character later on (besides father zera bc he's slow as shit). also a match replay mechanic would be sick. definitely recommend if you like realistic sword fighting
This fighting game pulls you into a version of 17th Century Polish dueling culture that also revels in the brutal truths of sword combat. It remains faithful to the kind of decision-making one needs to survive such an encounter, based on modern HEMA fighting. A major accomplishment from a very small dev team.
Uber realistic fighting game with historical weapons and polish flavour? Yes please.
VR is NOT first person. so.. theres that. otherwise decently fun
