Engaging story-line despite the repeatative game-play. Excellent in its simplicity. Recomended for one time play through only though.
I just want to start off by saying that the game freezes up a lot and that does need to be fixed but as an overall game i love it back when assassins creed was real assassins creed and the parkour and combat was about skill and rewarded or punished you depending on how good you were at it.I will say as someone who has done every achievement on xbox 360 the collectibles are a grind and should be avoided but as a game its story is very well written and challenges players skill with older titles like this one it can be a hard game but its a rewarding one but the game freezing does want me to leave a negative review (there are fixes for it but should not need a fix for a game in general)
Might be the worst experience of my life, story is actually decent but the bugs are insane. Unplayable... Do not play this one, jump to Assassins Creed 2
This garbage doesn't support any of my gamepads even with Steam Input and random fixes lol
I experienced major lag spikes every 60ish seconds that would completely lock the game up for a few seconds.
After a bit of researching i found that simply having an internet connection was causing the problems. So any time i spent playing this game was with my ethernet unplugged hence the 10min play time. The Game is also just the same exact thing cookie cuttered 9 times, never really presenting you with anything new after you've finished the first area
An absolute buggy mess. Majority of my play time was spent trying to progress past one bug or another. You can't play while connected to the internet or it constantly freezes. You can't play above 50hz refresh rate on your monitor or it won't let you progress past the tutorial. You can't perform a leap of faith or it shoots you out of the map like you've been fired from a cannon. You can't be attacked by anyone or it sends you to another plane of existence. I loved this game as a kid and would love to play it again, unfortunately this version will not allow me to do so.
I recently played Assassin's Creed 1 again, and I forgot how much I loved it. The world is so immersive, and the missions, while simple, really drew me in. Climbing those towers and pulling off stealth kills still feel amazing. I’d seriously love a remaster to relive it all in 2K!
Awful PC port. No idea how this was approved. Keybinds make no sense, freezes every minute or so, cannot connect any controller with ease, and even if you could, have fun learning the controls with the dumb symbols that are in place. Just remake it already.
Great game that unfortunately did not age very well. The gameplay is quite outdated and repetitive, though the story still stands strong. If you are new to the franchise, I suggest you skip the first entry and watch a story recap on YouTube. Play this one if you are a fan of a franchise and want to see how it all began.
Just enjoy another play through after more then 10 years since the first one. Just a good now as I was then. Great story line. Fun game play. A little repetitive. But that's OG Assassin's Creed for you. And... if you enjoy collectibles. There are plenty of those, as well as some challenging fights, not the hardest thing you'll every do, but not a complete push over! Just a good well rounded journey with a great story line that sets you up for Assassin's Creed 2!
The original Assassin's Creed has a fairly barebones gameplay loop, utterly uninspired collectible flags strewn about, and an honest to god horrible sound quality - everything sounds compressed and like they were making a trade-off between visuals and audio, except the visuals are also lackluster, but decent for 2008. Despite these issues, the core of what would be future games is already here, and the story is interesting enough to follow if you care about historical set pieces or philosophical debate. Its successor outshines it by every metric, and if any of the Assassin's Creed games deserved a remaster it was this one. Nevertheless it works and it's fun, but if you're thinking "gee what are these old AC games all about" I'd just play 2.
Assassins Creed 1. Good game, bit repetitive but it kicks off the franchise and was made in 2008.
Playing as wanted to understand the AC Franchise. Good first game. Would have been amazing at launch
NOTE:
The game freezes because it tries to connect to a server that is long-dead.
Two options to fix:
1) disconnect from the internet to play, or;
2) Someone in the community posted this fix that also works (and takes all of 2 minutes to sort the issue:

Its a great game lagging a bit old graphics repetitive game-play but hey it was developed in 2007 by a small team of 40 ish people so HEY be respectful and download this game.
Really good but also repetitive game. At least it didn't overstay it's welcome and at least no hiccups when playing.
Old controls and can be a bit quirky but mostly fun with awesome combat :3

Ah, the classic Assassin's Creed.
I remember a time before this series took the dramatic turns with Odyssey and Origins, and everyone lavished this lovable, but aged title with praise. However, the sad truth is that unless you're a die-hard fan of the series, or someone who had a pang for nostalgia (like me), then there's very little reason to want to play this classic title.
Even though I say that, I still believe this game has proper merits for what it did when it came out, and it is responsible for birthing the entire AC series of games. Without this game, there would have been no Ezio, no Edward Kenway, and no Bayek.
The good: Assasin's Creed puts you in the role of Altair, who is confirmed to be the most proficient assassin in the series history. I say that because in all other games, the player character has a health bar, and in this game, there's only a synchronization bar. This means that if you get hit as Altair, or do anything that Altair wouldn't have done (such as killing civilians or getting hit), then you lose being synchronized with Altair. Considering the number of guards and templars you'll be killing, and how satisfying it is to do so, the fact that Altair never got hit is... remarkable. Especially towards the end of the game where he fights against large numbers of powerful and skilled enemies. The combat, while dated, is satisfying, but challenging enough to keep you on your toes, and all of the extra content the game allows you to do, such as killing Templar Knights, saving civilians being harassed by guards, or doing all the investigations prior to each assassination is all fun and satisfying, as are some of the assassinations themselves. The story also keeps you guessing the whole time, as Altair, and his descendant, Desmond, are both working towards an unknown end, and you'll have more questions than answers, even at the end of the game. Considering that if this game failed to meet expectations and no sequel would have been published if that happened, that was a brave move on Ubisoft's part.
The bad: Unfortunately, this game has not aged well in its gameplay and how it handled the world at large. There are five major areas in Assassin's Creed, and you'll be spending most of your time in the cities of Damascus, Acre, and Jerusalem. There's nothing to do in Masyaf outside of necessary story beats, and the overworld area of "the kingdom" is either boring and vast, or it's filled to the brim with soldiers who will kill you when they see you because they recognize you as an assassin. Once you are in one of the three major cities, you have to perform investigations to find more information on your target, and once you do, you can return to the bureau within the city to begin your assassination. However, some of these assassinations, especially towards the mid to late part of the game, weren't designed with the idea that you could easily sneak up on a target and take them out with the hidden blade. One particular target, Sibrand, is widely considered the worst target in the whole game because it is difficult to reach him. This is the only AC game where you cannot swim, and Sibrand is on a boat, so you must jump from boat to boat while maintaining stealth until you can eventually kill him. The other major issue lies with the beggars and the madmen in each city. The beggars are women who will run up to you and beg you for money (and you can't give them any, or tell them to leave you alone), and they will impede your stealth capabilities when walking on the streets. The madmen are mentally disabled men who think it's really funny to shove you if you get too close to them. If they shove you into a guard, you can expect a fight to break out right then and there. Oh, also? Everyone in this game will comment on your behaviors all the time. No, really. You could be climbing, and you'll hear "He's going to hurt himself, and when he does, I won't help him!" At least two or three times. It also doesn't help that you could hear that same voice actor say words of gratitude for saving him from guards, among other remarks. This is also the only game in the series that has this issue, fortunately.
The other stuff: Side objectives such as completing all investigations, saving all civilians within a district, finding flags and killing Templar Knights rewards you with... nothing. In all other games, there are collectibles, but they all offer tangible rewards. However, aside from hunting for flags, Templar Knights are fun combat challenges or assassination targets depending on how you choose to approach them (or if you fail stealth), saving civilians will unlock vigilantes or scholars, which can help you to either distract the guards or hide from them respectively, and accessing each viewpoint will give you a detailed view of the map.
However, despite how harsh I am on this game, I want to make it clear that my criticisms of it are mostly due to this game being a product of its time. This game came out during the early years of the Wii/PS3/360 era, and open world games weren't mastered to the extent we see them today. There is joy to be had in killing corrupt politicians, seeing Altair reach his redemption, and witnessing the birth of one of the biggest and most recognizable game series out there. Assassin's Creed deserves to be enjoyed, even if it it is just once.
doesnt function, stutters every 4 seconds for 2 seconds. unplayable, pathetic ubisoft as normal
There is NO UPLAY for this entry in the series.. YES!!
This is an incredible introduction to the assassins creed series.
See how the series found its feet.
See how it all began.
Its fun with an intriguing story.
the one that started it all back when Ubisoft made good stuff and when you seen that old logo come up on screen you knew you where getting something good the game I am a huge sucker for the first game granted some of the missions are repetitive and some of the fighting animations look kind of janky but they can be pretty cool when looking snag it on sale if you can 8/10
This game brings back memories from my childhood, but overall it is a game with some bugs
great game once you learn the controls, great storyline. i just love the assassins creed games and to be playing the 1st one after all these years is amazing and the experence has truly been worth it
Hands down one of the greatest games I have played in a long time, once I figured out the best way to play is offline I had no issues booting into and playing this game. Love the story, extremely fun and loved experiencing the heart of the franchise. You can't go wrong with the game IMO.
It would've been nice to have some achievements but not a reason to deter from this game at all.
The game is GREAT, but the PC port is an outrageously buggy mess that required me to limit my computer's performance, tinker with controller settings a ton, and, most bizarrely, play in Airplane Mode.
There is something in the game that is trying to reach out to ubisoft's servers that don't exist and it causes the game to freeze every minute or so. You have to edit you sys32 files to fix it and doing that caused other issues.
Classic Ubislop.
literally unplayable on pc with a controller. i hope ubisoft falls apart and competent people takeover
The OG AC was the catalyst that dragged me back into console gaming after a hiatus between whenever I finally stopped playing GTA: Vice City on PS2 and I saw a friend of mine playing AC on his XBOX 360 some 4 years later. I immediately got a crossbox of my own and played through all the Creed games on that, then on PS4. Coming back to this on Steam was hugely nostalgic for me and the storyline and visuals are just as pleasing now as they were back in '07... just wish Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad got his 50 meter swimming certificate when he was a lad.
It's possible to fix the freezing by redirecting IPs in system32. Kinda insane fix but it does work.
Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad the GOAT!
Good to be back to the roots of this game, absolutely love it, even though missions are repetitive and boring, assassinations, the whole vibe of this game makes it always good for a replay.
Assassin's Creed 1 was a groundbreaking game for its time, introducing parkour, stealth, and a rich historical setting. The Holy Land during the Third Crusade is beautifully recreated, and the core mechanics are solid. However, the game suffers from repetitive missions and some persistent bugs that were never fully fixed. The story feels slow and lacks the depth found in later Assassin's Creed titles, making it less engaging compared to more recent entries. While it's a classic, it shows its age and is overshadowed by its successors.
The game by itself it's good still on these days.
Mystery, assassination, fun mechanics, history.
However... to run the game in some modern systems, you will need to do some configuration (check the forums to be able to use controller, and to remove some glitching when playing).
Apart from that, all good. It's recommended.
Unfortunately, Assassin's Creed has aged poorly. It is clunky, repetitive and frankly, just boring.
The gameplay is mediocre at best and only saved by the parkour system that helped make it so iconic in the first place. Combat is uninteresting and calling it easy would be an overstatement. The core loop is tedious and repetitive, not offering any diversity or changes to keep interest. The only saving grace in this aspect is that at least the assassination missions offer something to break the monotony of everything else.
Another core issue with this game is its age. Ubisoft simply doesn't care for the game anymore (and I don't expect them too). This would normally not be an issue, but for some odd reason this game is designed in such a way that it feels the need to constantly be connected to Uplay, A service that no longer exists. So in an attempt to connect, it looks to ping a server (which also no longer exists). This cause the game to freeze every 30-60 seconds for up to 10 seconds, repeatedly, non-stop. At times the game feels entirely unplayable with the constant stuttering and freezing this causes. The only reason I endured it is because I felt the desire to come back and finish a game I haven't played in over 10 years.
It's not all bad however, the game does still look very good, especially when you consider that it is 17 years old. It offers wonderful views and boasts pretty impressive cities and terrain to explore. The parkour system, though clunky, is still fun to use. I would be lying if I said I didn't enjoy running from rooftop to rooftop. But it just isn't enough to recommend a game that is as dated as this.
A decent game for its time but it shows its age.
It's definitely not a great game by any means, and it's not a good AC game either. Makes sense, it was the first of its kind and a leap of faith by ubisoft. But there's a reason it spawned a franchise.
The parkour is buggy and not at all polished. The combat is decent. The gameplay is repetitive and kinda annoying at times. You go to a city, unlock the map, do the same tired side missions until you have enough "information" to go do the assassination. It was novel at the time but quite common now and it is heavily felt.
If you have to make a choice between what old AC game to play, just buy AC2 instead of this. If you want to collect, then it is worth getting on sale. I enjoyed my 14 hours of gameplay but it was mostly nostalgia driven.
Why do they still actively sell a game that simply doesn't work? Every minute it tries to ping servers that are no longer there, causing it to lag for a few seconds when it fails to get a response. There are workarounds, for example it appears to work if you're totally disconnected from the internet, but it's really not acceptable to sell a game that requires you to physically unplug your ethernet cable in order to play. When deciding to turn off their servers games companies need to release a small update to remove the need to ping their servers every minute, especially if they continue to sell the game, even putting it on sale and advertising it - it's hardly rocket science or an onerous requirement!
I loved this game years ago, and it's still fun to play as the start of a great series, but I cannot recommend anyone buying a game that the developers have actively decided to make unplayable without artificial workarounds.
After fiddling with this for hours, I can't get it to run at all on my desktop. I've tried changing the compatibility mode of the executable to an older version of Windows. I've tried running it as administrator. I've tried restricting the number of cores to 8. Nothing works. The best I've managed is to get the Ubi logo to show up briefly before a CTD.
I tried playing it on my Steam Deck, but ran into issues there, too, where I can't get it to recognize input from the controller.
I can't in good conscience recommend buying this.
Maybe the best parkour system I've ever experienced
Easy to learn, hard to master. Lots of depth that is built upon up until Revelations.
The rest of the game is pretty good too, but it's the parkour that makes me recommend this one in particular. It's a good starter as the game more clearly lets you know when it is a good time to switch up your movement as your character slows down more than other entries after a certain point during a climb, which happens to be the exact point you have to change up your movements to efficiently scale structures.
This system is paired by some of the best parkour-driven level design I've ever seen.
If you want even more out of this system, check out the Definitive Parkour mods on Nexusmods, which are available for AC1 to Revelations and AC4 thus far. That adds even more granularity and freedom.
OG Classic! Before the Ubisoft greed took-over. The ambience of Middle-East, the storyline everything is great. It still is entertaining and grippy after all these years. Get it on sale if you're hesitant.
Aside from quirky PC controls or just my own skill issue, this is definitely the one that lives up to the title of "Assassin" and continues to do so even after 17 years. I did not grew up playing this game since back then we don't have access to procure console nor computers. But now, playing this as a 24 years old guy, wanting to play a lot of classics, this will definitely stuck. I hope the sequels will at least give me the same feeling.
The nostalgia for this game is fucking weird. The stealth system is completely broken and nonsensical. More than once I spent 5 minutes slowly trodding past some guards on horseback only for one of them to randomly yell "KILL HIM" and I get mobbed to death. Or I try to run and they somehow know exactly where I am forever until I find a magical hay stack...which some other guard sees me jump in and proceeds to try and kill me.
Also it freezes intermittently unless you disable your internet while playing. No mas.
Great game just have to do some mods to use controller & fix some bugs
Started as a 6/10 and became a very tedious 3/10 towards the end.
The core game play loop is terrible. You have to do 2-3 pointless side quests in order to actually do an assassination, which feature ether very bad forced stealth(one guard sees something and you insta fail), or very tedious 3d platforming.
To make these meaningless tasks even worse are the guards and movement parts of the game. The parkour in this game looks really cool at first, but when the novalty wears off you're just left with a movement system that is both very slow and janky. The guards are overly jumpy and even worse, function as a single hivemind.
If any guard becomes unhappy you're pretty much out of luck. You can't fight them because the combat is very slow and the guards are so numerous that it's pretty much impossible to fight less that 6 at a time. You can't run because the cities are completely crawling with guards and they will keep chasing you endlessly. The game will require you to always get out of sight and then find one of the very far and few between hiding spots, which is such a massive annoyance when all you want to do is do the side quests so that you can go back to the main quest so that you can finally end the game.
This game is also the most bug-filled experience I think I've ever had to endure. Characters glitching and flying around randomly is commonplace, and at multiple points even cutscene movements would have me flying threw the flooring.
pretty good. port holds up ok except for no official controller support
Despite the lagging (with can be fixed), it's still not playable. The controller is not usable and and with a mouse I constantly "tab out". The whole "free run and jumping" part is okayish, however I feel like it worked way better in black flag than it did in this one.
It's way too difficult to do even the simplest things, so if you're here for the story of the whole assasin's creed bundle, just check the story of this one on youtube
Mediocre
AC 1, where it all started. A game brimming with ideas and mechanics that you can recognize from the future entries but so shoddy in its implementation that it sucks out the fun from you had you played anything in the past 10 years.
First off the combat - trash. Probably one of the worst combat I've ever had the dissatisfaction of experiencing. It is full of jank, with less intrigue than watching paint dry. Most fights end up as a 'wait till the opponent strikes' since altair is weakness personified here. Combos are basically single button mash with most you can do is grab and throw enemies around semi-reliably. Counter icons or counters themselves are not much of a thing here as counter kill skill will most of the time simply knock an enemy down instead of killing them. If that does not bum you out wait for the lock on system which here in this game is the worst implementation of it I've ever seen. Even Aragami 2 has better lock on combat.
Basically you can only attack any enemy after you have locked onto them and the lock on is determined by the game thereafter, meaning if you knock down someone and want to finish them good luck, if the lock on doesn't kill you the shitty camera will.
Collectibles - a waste of time. None of the collectibles in this game matter and there are 400+ or so, how do I know? I collected them and not once was it rewarding. Speaking of rewards there is none for any collectible, not any equipment or outfits or skill or buffs, none. I though AC Unity/Syndicate was bad with its bloated collectibles but this is worse, at least you get something in the others.
Side activities - decent but frustrating later on. One of the few things I liked were the investigations around the map. In Ac Unity and Syndicate the sandbox missions were not new mechanics it turns out and they are far more open ended here. You only need 2 of 6 to continue with story but each gives and advantage in the main assassination, namely, an escape route or map hazards or guard locations etc. Its nice early game but later on they just are a slightly annoying chore. Fuck the archers with 360 degree vision like they have byakugan or something and especially fuck those drunks in Jerusalem and lunatics in Acre(if you know, you know).
Progression - ???. Who though of this? The game takes away your equipment at start which I get because you have been demoted but also your ability to grab ledges and shove people in crowds and dodge attacks?? Why? Does Altair lose brain cells when he gets demoted or what?
TLDR - Shit game today but maybe was new or playable when it came out, go play other entries in the series. While Arkham Asylum aged like cheese and City/Knight like wine Assassin creed 1 aged like milk.
If you still want to play this don't bother with collectibles as there's no point, there is no money or equipment/store system in the game and no rewards for killing those templars out in the world either. Fast travel unlocks in Memory Block 4 and stick to rooftops on this one, at least two storeyed for combat as you can just grab and throw most enemies to their deaths from there.
While this game definitely shows it's age, The first entry in the Assassin's Creed franchise is still a wonderful experience! While some of the mechanics are slow and clunky compared to later entries, the story and the world are both still very engaging even in 2024. If you haven't picked this game up yet, I would definitely recommend it!
I really wish Steam had a mixed neither yes nor no option. I feel very conflicted on this game. TLDR: navigation is constant problem, basic functions need to be unlocked first, combat is terrible, guards are too aggressive, but the story, music, atmosphere, and freedom given to the player makes it not the worst thing.
There's a lot to like about Assassin's Creed. I like the atmosphere and music and the freedom to play however you like. There is also a lot I do not like about AC. First, the freerunning. the freerunning and climbing mechanics are really neat and a cool idea on paper and in concept, clearly meant to be an expansion of ideas based on Ubisoft's prior Prince of Persia series, however I have found it to be incredibly frustrating at times. Many attempts have been made at making simple jumps and for some reason I just sort of jump in a wildly different direction than what I was looking at, and turning sometimes as far as a 90 degree difference. Some things that are clearly able to be climbed on sometimes do not properly allow you to climb them as if they aren't there. I found myself more annoyed than not.
Another thing I did not like was the amount of things you need to unlock that really did not need to be unlocked. Why the hell do you need to *unlock* the ability to hold B to grab onto a ledge while falling? That just makes no sense and makes traversal worse.
Another thing that was constantly bothersome was that guards would aggro WAYYY too easily. It has interrupted me many times when I am like 5 feet away from an objective like evesdropping or something.
This leads me into one of the worst things about this game: the combat, which might I add is mandatory in some segments. I have no reason not to just use the dagger and parry for guaranteed kills, and this makes combat a wait and hit B simulator. And this can go on for a while. The only time you would need to break from this is if you can get a kill by throwing enemies off buildings or cliffs.
Not to mention I have no incentive to pick up collectables.
Overall I didn't hate my time with the game, but it felt riddled with issues that brought down the game from being pretty good to the lower end of "okay".
This is the Iconic beginning of the AC franchise and it has definitely aged, later instalments have improved so much on this game its hard to go back, it clearly shows the potential of the series but has a repetitive design that hasn't aged well although there is still some fun to be had in visiting the origin of this series. This isn't the main reason i don't recommend this game, the reason i don't recommenced it is it will stutter every 30 seconds and freeze, the only way to fix this is to play the game offline, it can also be fixed with a mod but this is hard to install. So my review is more of a warning.
A classic that still holds up today. Only major gripes are that you can't skip cut scenes and there's no subtitles.
Had such a good time with this, all the cities were really fun to explore with their unique settings the story was entertaining, nothing too special but still worth the while. The only big issue I found with this was that you have to play it offline because otherwise it automatically tries to connect to the old ubisoft servers which don't exist anymore making the game really laggy and unstable, classic ubisoft. The controls are pretty difficult to get used to at first but once you get used to them you can get alot of fun out of them. I'm really glad I bought this though since ive been meaning to get into the assassins creed series for quite a while now and this is a really great start and im excited to see whats next in store for me in the other games. Overall great game only wish ubisoft would look after it a bit better.
The oldest entry that'd give birth to a long and somewhat hit-or-miss series, but the original Assassin's Creed holds up decently well. Its age definitely shows, with repetitive gameplay and clunky parkour, but overall still worth a play.
I played this because I really enjoyed Origins and Odyssey and wanted to go back and play the original.
This game was pretty cool but man was in frustrating to play compared to those 2, a lot of progress has been made. The movement and combat were atrocious on PC and made me rage hard. The story was kinda interesting, but not as good as the more modern games.
Overall 7/10 from me
