Game freezes every few seconds for about 15-20 seconds at a time. Fixes online don't work.
Nice settings and generally interesting plot, though the individual missions sometimes got a bit repetitive and I'm really not a fan of needing to explore every little corner to collect all the flags, which have no real bearing on the plot. The ability to climb everything is pretty fun, though occasionally inconvenient when you start climbing a wall when you're just trying to go around a corner.
This game is quite fun in my opinion, only problem i got with it so far is all the lag, one of the best games from my early childhood
I’d say as someone who played this game on the PlayStation 3 as kid but as kids is just mess around and not beat the story. This game has a great story and the main character Altaïr you’ll grow attached to at the end of the game. Only problem is to fix the game stuttering you’ll have to edit your host file and edit and block an IP. I’m not sure but I do believe you can use Windows Firewall to block the game from communicating with the internet. And It might fix the stuttering. Beside that the game is still worthy of your money.
If the port wasn't prone to crashing, had the achievements from Xbox 360, and 100%ing didn't take collecting a million flags this game would be a MASTERPIECE. They crammed an insane amount of things into this game and they were so innovative at the time — the horses feel and control phenomenally and this is one I often came back to as a kid. Thank you Ubisoft in the past for the magic I felt experiencing Assassin's Creed for the first time.
I would call the interactions in this game nothing short of a tech demo, with how detailed it is. Enemies can stop you from assassinating, but if you build up momentum while running you can still assassinate them. If you have less area to land, you simply slip. You can run through stalls to break pursuers. You can throw them into stalls to kill them. Sometimes you don't jump off a ledge, because you didn't build running momentum to jump off.
This game is proof that once ubisoft had a very detailed combat mechanic. Due to journalists being horrible at video games, and zoomers not reading tutorials it was misunderstood, removed and now forgotten. Replaced with rollslop mechanics.
It took me 16 years to realize ubisoft probably put a mechanic with a higher skill ceiling than sekiro itself. If you learn to combo (press button 1 right when the sword connects again) you can instantly kill hordes of enemies. Which is quite necessary as the final stretch of the game has you fight many.
If you want to play a game actually about assassins, their culture and all this would remain the best game. Also no Uplay.
Clunky early 360 era gameplay and controls that have aged like milk but story is pretty good still
Overall rating: 7/10
The game is good. First time playing real AC game (Valhalla doesn't count, its a trash). I really liked realistic parkour. You are not spider-man here, you really need to find spots where you can grab and climb. Story is good, though sometimes there are some cringe moments. The gameplay is good as long as you focus on your main mission. Assassination quests from informers were also good, adds a little fun challenge. And remember, your true enemy is not the guards but drunk sailors and insane people. Kill them on spot, saves a lot of your time and stress.
Also, if your game is lagging every minute, turn off your WiFi. This game doesn't work if you are online.
Before I start let me answer biggest question, yes it is still playable.
However, like other reviewers, I recommend you start with the AC2. Ezio's story much more immersive than Altair's. The map is huge, yes it would have been very interesting in 2007 but due to the lack of fast travel it is also too big for today's gaming standards. The mechanics in general feel very dull and bland. The combat is all about counterattacking, all you have to do is press the right button at the right time and that's it you are untouchable. Also moving and climbing side of the game is sometimes feels unresponsive. Assassination side of the game is OK people are complaining about doing same thing but guys have you ever tried the latest Ubisoft games? Spending around 30 minutes for each assassinations prep phase collecting info, bribing guards etc. and if you ask me that makes the game little bit of realistic. Even if you are a some hooded assassin guy you are not able the enter the place and saber everyone. Basically, you have to cook your targets before assassinate them.
In conclusion if you are wondering about how was the early AC games, you can buy in Steam sales, not worth for full price and I still recommend you to start with AC2.
This is a torture. Absolute torture. Crashes, lags, you fly all over the map and die. This makes the game unplayable.
i loved this game so much! even tho its old the graphics are amazinggg!!!! and the story is awsome too the plot was really good. but the thing i dont like is the parkour its just that the climbing feels really slow other than that its a good game overall
Definitely has some jank and repetitveness, but it grew on me while playing and I overall had a fun time. Had to install mods to get it to run normally, but performance was fine after that. Another annoying event was the two or three times the game crashed for no reason. Still, as my starting point into the Assassin's Creed universe, it makes me want to try out the other games.
In my opinion, this game is worth trying to play. The story is pretty good, combat is satisfying and the progression is good. You get to unlock more items as you progress, but it can get pretty repetitive since you’re doing the same missions multiple times. The parkour is probably one of the best in assassin’s creed games, next to Unity. I’d strongly suggest you should get it, if it’s on sale.
Always wanted to complete Altair's legacy. The game is okay but it has become really old. Everything is very dated. Still I'll recommend those who haven't played it yet.
Genuinely unplayable on PC. Do not waste your money. Infinite loading screens, crashing, artifacts, glitches. I tried so hard, and did not get so far.
It is very good.
I mean for it's age? Well the story is repetitive and can be boring but the game is extremely good.
Combat isn't to bad, there are multiple maps which is surprising.
Great plot, amazing characters and one of the best parkour systems in the series.
This game doesn't function properly. There are freezes every minute or so. There's supposedly a host file fix but I really don't have time for things that shouldn't be broken in the first place. Burn, Ubisoft, burn.
Amazing graphics for a 2007 game that holds up to todays standards
This Game ia so good i love it the music, character, gameplay everything is perfect AND it's don't use UBISOFT CONNECT( BEST ) OLD but GOLD the controllers are hard for me but when you master it is so easy, if you ask me buy it in the offer it's worth it i buy it for 124 rupees !!!!!
Only play if you want to know the lore, otherwise this game is not fun. Very buggy, so many beggers and lunatics that make it impossible to complete missions. Parkour is about the only decent thing in this game and even that is buggy. This was a chore to play.
My favourite AC. best parkour and combat, seriously worth learning all that these systems have to offer and not just scratching the surface like most players and reviewers.
And there are fixes for all complaints such as controllers not working or constant freezing.
Awesome mods too like Definitive Parkour and Disable Auto Weapon Switching
Yes i would recommend this game it has its problems but but over all this game is great it is fun and entertaining. There is a couple of problems about the game mostly glitches for 30 seconds or 5 minutes and the character falls out of the map but if you don't mind this stuff then i would buy it. The last thing is it takes a little while to get used to .
I used to love this game. I played it first at release and then replayed it several times. It was a great game. In my memory.
However, I can’t recommend it to anyone today, as it is barely playable on a modern computer.
Bugs and glitches are countless, they turned my playthrough into a real struggle. I finished it once, for the sake of old times, but I won’t be returning.
I had to play offline to avoid game freezing every minute. Altair kept dying on every other leap of faith (making it a literal “leap of faith” with 50/50 chance of survival, haha), even with the available fixes.
I lost count of how many times I fell through textures. Especially during fights — when grabbed by the enemy, Altair could get teleported, stuck in the textures or even suddenly die. Or all of this together.
I also remember playing it with a controller back in the day, with no issues. Somehow, it doesn’t work so well anymore. The UI looks Xbox-friendly, so you’d expect buttons to be assigned by position, but they’re completely random. Having to adjust or reassign them is just another drawback.
I still find story good, even though it feels very simple by now. Gameplay, on the other hand, is incredibly repetitive; missions are copy-pasted with only minor dialogue changes.
Attempting 100% completion — viewpoints, saved citizens, flags, templars — is mind-numbing. I tried to do it, but nearly died of boredom trying to finish at least one city.
In the past, I’d rate it a 4/5. For today’s standards? 2/5.
If you're thinking about buying this game, know this: There's a high chance that your controller won't work. If it doesn't work, good luck fixing it lol. I couldn't figure it out. A lot of people have this same problem. I tried playing with kbm but I couldn't do it. Did not feel good. I miss this game, I love this game, but I can't play it. A shame. Oh and if you play with internet connected to you computer, it freeze constantly lol
TLDR: Great story, great dialogues, amazing world design and atmosphere. Buy it on sale since it's an old game.
A great start to the series. This would be my second playthrough after 10 years and I almost forgot just how great this game was. The story is the biggest winner in this title. The atmosphere and the world design is incredible for a 17 year old game. I love how the contrast in atmosphere depending on each city's condition. Damascus is veiled in gold because it stayed far away from pillage and war, whereas Acre's atmosphere is dull and cold from the recent siege it had been through. Jerusalem's a bit of both since both sides (Crusaders and the Saracens) are fighting for it. The parkour can be slow if you come from newer AC titles but you can shrug it off if you instil realism in your brain. The combat is fun and can be a challenge if you get surrounded by 5-10 soldiers. The investigation system can get repetitive, but once again you can shrug it off if you think this is technically how investigations are done. The voice acting is actually great (don't know why Altair's one is American lol but he tried his best and it's pretty good), as each dialogue carries weight as Arabic words typically do. The lack of subtitles can be a pain but personally I loved the story so I was pretty much hooked into it to the point I captured every word they had said. The game requires a bit of tweaking to run on modern systems, but overall I would say this is definitely worth playing.
Been a couple of years since i Played through AC. But i remember it having a good story but very repetitive gameplay, but the story is what holds it up and that goes to the other AC as well. Altair will always be my guy though.
Controls are more or less horrible, and so is AC2 and the other older games. A gamepad will help alot though.
The setting is pretty cool. Visiting Jerusalem and Damascus etc is always nice.
7/10 game. Grab it on sale!
good game with bad port its really annoying me to fix the bug everytime im spending time on bugs more than the game and thats make make me angry everytime
The start of a series, while it has already fall behind graphic and control wise but it still has a decent story. Also the collectibles are a pain in the ass to get.
A classic that still stands today, the first of the AC series and the one that started it all. It has many aspects that where removed in later titles, such as investigating targets before you assassinating them, but it still stands out amongst the whole franchise. Definitely recommended.
8/10
This game got me to AC universe and I used to play it a lot. Playing it now was beautiful nostalgia at first and annoying suffering at the end. It's very repetitive in many ways and it also has many flaws, bugs and glitches that make it uncomfortable to play. The second worst aspect after repetitiveness is parkour. Altair gets stuck so many times on so many places in so many bad situations... Combat on the other hand is quite good. There are things that could be better (and later AC games fix that) but it's probably the main reason I loved to play this game so much.
I recommend to play it for the story but that's probably all...
Engaging story-line despite the repeatative game-play. Excellent in its simplicity. Recomended for one time play through only though.
I just want to start off by saying that the game freezes up a lot and that does need to be fixed but as an overall game i love it back when assassins creed was real assassins creed and the parkour and combat was about skill and rewarded or punished you depending on how good you were at it.I will say as someone who has done every achievement on xbox 360 the collectibles are a grind and should be avoided but as a game its story is very well written and challenges players skill with older titles like this one it can be a hard game but its a rewarding one but the game freezing does want me to leave a negative review (there are fixes for it but should not need a fix for a game in general)
Might be the worst experience of my life, story is actually decent but the bugs are insane. Unplayable... Do not play this one, jump to Assassins Creed 2
This garbage doesn't support any of my gamepads even with Steam Input and random fixes lol
I experienced major lag spikes every 60ish seconds that would completely lock the game up for a few seconds.
After a bit of researching i found that simply having an internet connection was causing the problems. So any time i spent playing this game was with my ethernet unplugged hence the 10min play time. The Game is also just the same exact thing cookie cuttered 9 times, never really presenting you with anything new after you've finished the first area
I'm no stranger to playing older games, but this one has aged like yogurt left on a hot summer day in Phoenix Arizona. The PC port is completely scuffed and required me to edit my system 32 file just so it would stop freezing every 60 seconds. This is my first game in the series and while I expected a decent amount of jank for a game this old, but its blowing me away at how bad the game feels. The controls were somehow bound wrong by default for an Xbox One controller, and despite rebinding them in the settings, It is IMPOSSIBLE to figure out what the hell "Button 0" is on a controller. Thus making even the tutorial a complete pain in the ass to complete, because you dont know what buttons to press. I played on keyboard and mouse just so the button prompts were atleast understandable. (still had the "button 0" bullshit, so i cant ever use my throwing knives lmao) Stealth is also pretty much never an option because the guards will get hostile towards you for just walking around, and proceed to call for about 12 other men to come jump you, meaning every encounter is a ganking. Running away from something like this also is EXTREMELY difficult because the guards move faster than you and will slash you in the back. They are also somehow better at parkour than you are, meaning that absolutely no matter what you do, they will still be on your ass. The only way to reenter stealth is to hope and pray you are next to a little hut that is scattered on the rooftops around the cities. These huts also magically make every guard instantly lose aggro on you, and return to their posts, which is super janky to watch happen. Another bug that happened to me is that the super iconic "Leap of Faith" jumps that you can do (after completing a climb up your generic Ubisoft tower), and they instantly killed me the first 4 times I tried to do it. Super disappointed that I had to look up the fix (keeping vsync on), taking out all of the impact from one of the few things i knew about, and was excited for, when starting this franchise. The Story also starts you at an interesting location and time period, but doesn't elaborate AT ALL on ANYTHING. No random people on the street to talk to for world building, instead they only berate you for trying to use the parkour system, which is actually pretty solid, but has the amount of jank id expect from a game this dated. I can see how it will be improved upon in the future. The cities all manage to look copy and pasted, and don't really have anything to differentiate them. The story is practically non existed already, but is further damaged by the fact that you are constantly teleported across time to various points, which makes sense for lore reasons, but it takes you out of the gameplay immediately whenever you get a fade to white screen and get teleported across the entire map, back to the starting area. which is also terrible to navigate from. The first half of the missions require you to run from the starting area, find a horse, run to the next copy paste city, complete a task, then rinse and repeat for the entire experience. As a super big stealth fan, I really hate that I have to leave this review, because i also recently played through the original Metal Gear Solid trilogy, and despite those games beings significantly older, they somehow felt better to play.
EDIT: I have beaten the game now and somehow my opinion of it has lowered even more. The story mission structure is the same 4 side missions copy and pasted, and they must each be done 3 times just to have access to the actual main mission. This artificial longevity is one of the worst feats of game design that could be achieved. My hate is also compounded by the fact that you have to climb the generic Ubisoft towers every 5 minutes in a vain attempt to get the aforementioned side missions to even show up on your map. Completely takes me out of the story and makes progressing through it a huge chore. Unfortunately the entire game could be considered one big chore, and nothing engaged me at all. The ending also makes absolutely zero sense and I actually just have no idea how this game spawned an entire franchise.
.5/10 - Truly terrible experience. Probably the worse game I've played in a couple years. If you want an introduction to the franchise, look elsewhere. I can only hope for my sanity and my wallet that I like the other games a helluva lot more.
An absolute buggy mess. Majority of my play time was spent trying to progress past one bug or another. You can't play while connected to the internet or it constantly freezes. You can't play above 50hz refresh rate on your monitor or it won't let you progress past the tutorial. You can't perform a leap of faith or it shoots you out of the map like you've been fired from a cannon. You can't be attacked by anyone or it sends you to another plane of existence. I loved this game as a kid and would love to play it again, unfortunately this version will not allow me to do so.
I recently played Assassin's Creed 1 again, and I forgot how much I loved it. The world is so immersive, and the missions, while simple, really drew me in. Climbing those towers and pulling off stealth kills still feel amazing. I’d seriously love a remaster to relive it all in 2K!
Awful PC port. No idea how this was approved. Keybinds make no sense, freezes every minute or so, cannot connect any controller with ease, and even if you could, have fun learning the controls with the dumb symbols that are in place. Just remake it already.
Great game that unfortunately did not age very well. The gameplay is quite outdated and repetitive, though the story still stands strong. If you are new to the franchise, I suggest you skip the first entry and watch a story recap on YouTube. Play this one if you are a fan of a franchise and want to see how it all began.
Just enjoy another play through after more then 10 years since the first one. Just a good now as I was then. Great story line. Fun game play. A little repetitive. But that's OG Assassin's Creed for you. And... if you enjoy collectibles. There are plenty of those, as well as some challenging fights, not the hardest thing you'll every do, but not a complete push over! Just a good well rounded journey with a great story line that sets you up for Assassin's Creed 2!
The original Assassin's Creed has a fairly barebones gameplay loop, utterly uninspired collectible flags strewn about, and an honest to god horrible sound quality - everything sounds compressed and like they were making a trade-off between visuals and audio, except the visuals are also lackluster, but decent for 2008. Despite these issues, the core of what would be future games is already here, and the story is interesting enough to follow if you care about historical set pieces or philosophical debate. Its successor outshines it by every metric, and if any of the Assassin's Creed games deserved a remaster it was this one. Nevertheless it works and it's fun, but if you're thinking "gee what are these old AC games all about" I'd just play 2.
Assassins Creed 1. Good game, bit repetitive but it kicks off the franchise and was made in 2008.
Playing as wanted to understand the AC Franchise. Good first game. Would have been amazing at launch
NOTE:
The game freezes because it tries to connect to a server that is long-dead.
Two options to fix:
1) disconnect from the internet to play, or;
2) Someone in the community posted this fix that also works (and takes all of 2 minutes to sort the issue:

Its a great game lagging a bit old graphics repetitive game-play but hey it was developed in 2007 by a small team of 40 ish people so HEY be respectful and download this game.
Really good but also repetitive game. At least it didn't overstay it's welcome and at least no hiccups when playing.
Old controls and can be a bit quirky but mostly fun with awesome combat :3

Ah, the classic Assassin's Creed.
I remember a time before this series took the dramatic turns with Odyssey and Origins, and everyone lavished this lovable, but aged title with praise. However, the sad truth is that unless you're a die-hard fan of the series, or someone who had a pang for nostalgia (like me), then there's very little reason to want to play this classic title.
Even though I say that, I still believe this game has proper merits for what it did when it came out, and it is responsible for birthing the entire AC series of games. Without this game, there would have been no Ezio, no Edward Kenway, and no Bayek.
The good: Assasin's Creed puts you in the role of Altair, who is confirmed to be the most proficient assassin in the series history. I say that because in all other games, the player character has a health bar, and in this game, there's only a synchronization bar. This means that if you get hit as Altair, or do anything that Altair wouldn't have done (such as killing civilians or getting hit), then you lose being synchronized with Altair. Considering the number of guards and templars you'll be killing, and how satisfying it is to do so, the fact that Altair never got hit is... remarkable. Especially towards the end of the game where he fights against large numbers of powerful and skilled enemies. The combat, while dated, is satisfying, but challenging enough to keep you on your toes, and all of the extra content the game allows you to do, such as killing Templar Knights, saving civilians being harassed by guards, or doing all the investigations prior to each assassination is all fun and satisfying, as are some of the assassinations themselves. The story also keeps you guessing the whole time, as Altair, and his descendant, Desmond, are both working towards an unknown end, and you'll have more questions than answers, even at the end of the game. Considering that if this game failed to meet expectations and no sequel would have been published if that happened, that was a brave move on Ubisoft's part.
The bad: Unfortunately, this game has not aged well in its gameplay and how it handled the world at large. There are five major areas in Assassin's Creed, and you'll be spending most of your time in the cities of Damascus, Acre, and Jerusalem. There's nothing to do in Masyaf outside of necessary story beats, and the overworld area of "the kingdom" is either boring and vast, or it's filled to the brim with soldiers who will kill you when they see you because they recognize you as an assassin. Once you are in one of the three major cities, you have to perform investigations to find more information on your target, and once you do, you can return to the bureau within the city to begin your assassination. However, some of these assassinations, especially towards the mid to late part of the game, weren't designed with the idea that you could easily sneak up on a target and take them out with the hidden blade. One particular target, Sibrand, is widely considered the worst target in the whole game because it is difficult to reach him. This is the only AC game where you cannot swim, and Sibrand is on a boat, so you must jump from boat to boat while maintaining stealth until you can eventually kill him. The other major issue lies with the beggars and the madmen in each city. The beggars are women who will run up to you and beg you for money (and you can't give them any, or tell them to leave you alone), and they will impede your stealth capabilities when walking on the streets. The madmen are mentally disabled men who think it's really funny to shove you if you get too close to them. If they shove you into a guard, you can expect a fight to break out right then and there. Oh, also? Everyone in this game will comment on your behaviors all the time. No, really. You could be climbing, and you'll hear "He's going to hurt himself, and when he does, I won't help him!" At least two or three times. It also doesn't help that you could hear that same voice actor say words of gratitude for saving him from guards, among other remarks. This is also the only game in the series that has this issue, fortunately.
The other stuff: Side objectives such as completing all investigations, saving all civilians within a district, finding flags and killing Templar Knights rewards you with... nothing. In all other games, there are collectibles, but they all offer tangible rewards. However, aside from hunting for flags, Templar Knights are fun combat challenges or assassination targets depending on how you choose to approach them (or if you fail stealth), saving civilians will unlock vigilantes or scholars, which can help you to either distract the guards or hide from them respectively, and accessing each viewpoint will give you a detailed view of the map.
However, despite how harsh I am on this game, I want to make it clear that my criticisms of it are mostly due to this game being a product of its time. This game came out during the early years of the Wii/PS3/360 era, and open world games weren't mastered to the extent we see them today. There is joy to be had in killing corrupt politicians, seeing Altair reach his redemption, and witnessing the birth of one of the biggest and most recognizable game series out there. Assassin's Creed deserves to be enjoyed, even if it it is just once.
doesnt function, stutters every 4 seconds for 2 seconds. unplayable, pathetic ubisoft as normal
There is NO UPLAY for this entry in the series.. YES!!
This is an incredible introduction to the assassins creed series.
See how the series found its feet.
See how it all began.
Its fun with an intriguing story.
