No matter what I did, this game ran at a very low FPS and almost gave me a headache.
Really interesting. I liked the story
Price tag is crazy-get it on sale.
Overall good performance, but crashed once.
References are sick/out of control.
Time to beat is a tad short at 5 hours.
Atmosphere, puzzles, and VA work all shine.
Little gem that deserves more of the limelight.
Now add portals to it.
I thoroughly enjoyed this game and especially appreciated all the references to Portal.
The game is well done and each level is fun.
There are a few issues with it:
1. It cuts off the top and bottom of the screen in widescreen monitors. It's not that big of a deal, except when you are trying to figure out which level you are on (as that is in the top right corner) or when you are trying to select items in the menus. For example, the graphics menu has a FOV option, but I could never see that as it was cut off. I only realized it when I was trying to reselect the last level to play and couldn't scroll down to it as it also was cut off. I had to change my screen resolution to a really crappy 1028x720 just to get the menus to scroll down far enough. Then reset the resolution once I got into the level I wanted.
2. This was not a big deal to me, but the very ending turns from a puzzle game to a parkour/platforming game. I actually enjoyed this part, but if you are not into that, I'm sure it would be frustrating.
Overall the game was lovely and I would recommend it. It took me about 10 hours to 100%.
its a good puzzle game especially if u used to be a portal fan and a total masochist.
An excellent puzzle game with a unique premise and great execution.
Good
Nice
Puzzles are well designed, not too difficult. Sometimes I miss the clever solutions that Portal made you search for. In Portal it often felt very rewarding to find the solution. Not so much in this game. It is not on the same level as Portal. Especially when it comes to the story and narration. That's where this game is lacking. But if you liked Portal and you are looking for a similar puzzle game then this might be for you. Mostly for the well designed puzzles. And for the price you really can't expect it to be as good as the master class puzzle games. On the indie level this is one of the best puzzle games. I have been looking for more games like that, and I am glad there still are new ones coming out.
edit: Now that I have finished it I'll add a little bit: The main narrator actually does a good job, my main problem with the story comes from the puzzles not really being a part of the story. I realize that this is quite the challenge, so it's not a big flaw. I liked the ending. Overall good game.
Pretty entertaining and moderately difficult. Short but great production.
good
Very enjoyable portal-like puzzle game
try hard portal, better play portal revolution, because its lightmatter's story is just generic/bland at most
Awesome puzzle game. not too hard to become frustrated but a nice little challenge. absolutely enjoyed it. i loved listening to Virgil. also loved the design
7/10. The inspiration from Portal and similar first-person puzzle games is clear, and the puzzles + voice acting are decent, but the aesthetic, story, and world building/levels feel somewhat more dreary and hollow than its inspiration.
Ever deal with light before? Well yeah, it's like that but -it's more of a state of the matter.
If ya get the jist of it.
The masochist in me really enjoyed being insulted constantly for being dumb & slow while solving various light based puzzles.
Also a PSA for future players:
There's a chance your jump(space) button might stop working if you use Shift+Tab to access Steam overlay. Just press Shift again while ingame and it should fix the problem.
Considering the game being 5 years old while writing this review, I don't have any hopes this being fixed by developers.
The game is ok. But not at the same level as Portal or Talos principle.
Just 100% it, if you catch it on sale it's a great deal, speacially if you like portal saga
Also the frame thing people are commenting:
-I encountered a couple (literally) of crashes but no dealbreakers
-Framerate wise, you are prolly gonna need to lower shadow quality, after it'll run smooth at the framerate you'd like
It tries too hard to mimic Portal and Stanley Parable's humor and fails miserably. The comments from Virgil become absolutely annoying throughout the entire game. Other than that, the puzzles are okay, and the price is low. So, thumbs up only if you find it on discount. 5/10.
Pays tribute to the Portal games in the best way while also being it's own unique game. The puzzles were just challenging enough without being impossible.
Clearly inspired by Portal, but with a lovely style on its own.
Really enjoyed this. It had an excellent sense of humour all the way through and puzzles that were challenging but solvable without having to spend too much time thinking about it. I had a lot of fun.
fun puzzles and compelling story
It gets tiring to listen to the uppity CEO after a while. The puzzles were okay. Can't really recommend unless you are done with most other 1st person puzzle platformers.
Puzzle game in the vein of Portal in which you are trying to escape a scientific facility after a disaster. The research done in the facility dealt with harnessing a substance called "lightmatter", which creates light and endless energy. But since the disaster, the shadows have become deadly - step into an area outside of the light and you'll be dissolved.
To escape, you need to find a way that is illuminated, or otherwise light it up first. There are portable lamps for this purpose, and over time, more mechanisms are added. All the puzzles are logical and you should be able to figure them out without a guide. It gets harder in the later sections though, and you may have to ponder those puzzles for a while. And sometimes, it's not so much about thinking hard but thinking fast when you run and jump through areas with moving shadows.
If you fail and your character dies, luckily, consequences aren't dire: You get to restart seconds before that death and lose practically no progress.
Graphics are simplified. Maybe they could have been made to look more "latest 3D effects", but on the other hand, their simple look helps to sharply emphasize the contrast between light and darkness, useful for unambiguous navigation.
The game was made by a small Danish team, and for what it is - indie, not a triple A game, not something meant to occupy you for tens of hours - it does its job pretty well. Recommended.
not too hard, really fun though
It was fun. Props for no loading screens - i was going to the next level without even knowing it. Most of the levels were fairly easy - only 1 or 2 were "show me a walk through" hard. Death/Failure was made very painless with convenient restarts and no reloading screens/times. There are many similarities drawn between Portal and Lightmatter - but Lightmatter didn't have a deep enough story, satisfying enough reasons why things were the way they were, or enough time to develop a connection with the characters (i.e., who are you, why were you there, what did Allen poor into Ellen's hair and why, etc.). The game felt quick, but for what it was, it was a fun game to play. Good job developers - keep up the good work!
Lightmatter is an... interesting game.
Pros: Portal-inspired gimmick, with a pretty, minimalistic setting and cool narration.
Cons: Very little content for its price, very low FPS cap (under 30 FPS) makes the game choppy and headache-inducing, bad choice of respawn locations at times, requiring a reset, random crashes despite it being almost 5 years since release.
Summary: Lightmatter needs major fixes and content packages to actually be worth 20$. I bought it on sale for much less and still feel kinda ripped off.
Хорошие загадки, в меру сложные
LIGHTMATTER
Lightmatter is a pretty simple first-person puzzle game that presents elements reminiscent of Portal and The Talos Principle. Many of the story beats feel like a rebranded Portal narrative, which certainly weakens the overall experience, but the voice acting and overall visual style I feel makes up for the less-than-original storyline.
While most of the puzzles in the game are relatively simple and the game ends before the difficulty matches many other puzzle games' later segments, I still find the premise of manipulating light to create pathways in the dark to be an intriguing concept, and the addition partway through of the Photon Connectors helped keep things fresh.
The main drawback of the game, certainly, is its length, taking only a few hours to beat, and then some more if you go after the scattered achievements throughout the game which also are largely plain, many of which involve staring at a random object for a minute. I purchased Lightmatter at a 95% discount, so the length certainly wasn't an issue for me, but at full price I can see how this is a relatively pressing issue.

Not bad. The puzzles are a little bit on the easy side if you're used to puzzle-platformers, BUT following in the footsteps of Portal, the voice acting is extremely well done. The story is pretty good, too!
However, the game is pretty short. On a first playthrough, with me literally going as slow as possible, I still finished it in about 4-5 hours. I have more time only because I went back through to listen to Developer Commentary (yep, it's available, but don't activate it on first playthrough since it spoils some puzzles and disables all other audio while they're talking). With only a couple of exceptions, most of the puzzles can be completed in less than a minute, and there's only a few dozen puzzles here.
That said, it means the game doesn't overstay its welcome. $20 is a bit steep for a game that could easily be over in one sitting, but it's a good game. Worth it at full price, but I recommend picking it up on sale.
Game engine is locked to 50 FPS. Otherwise this would be a good game but instead it's a broken product you have to fix in order to use it. Not recommended at all, definitely not for a full price.
Man i really enjoyed this game.
Fun puzzle elements, not too easy, not too difficult.
Cool art style, a little spooky, a lot of fun :)
I require rebindable controls to comfortably play, but devs have stated that they don't have the resources to implement them. AutoHotKey, reWASD, and other external tools all share common drawbacks.
went in thinking it would be a normal puzzle game, came out having experienced one of my favourite puzzle games ever. Super easy to understand, but sometimes quite tricky to get the outcome you want. Perfectly paced and not too challenging so you can put some of your focus on the Portal-inspired lore. Highly recommend!
Recommended to fans of casual first-person spatial puzzle games. The general premise of illuminating your way to safety is interesting enough, but the puzzles are rather straightforward. The last section of the game departs from puzzling into a "run and jump" sequence, which is also fairly simple with good checkpoints. Total runtime is approximately 5 hours. (It takes longer than that for all the cards to drop, if you care about such things)
For a first-and-only title, I was impressed by the overall polish of the game. Outside of expected small stutters between levels/loading zones (and one crash, also in a loading zone), the game ran smoothly, and I never personally fell out of the map. I did briefly lose a lamp when it fell through an elevator, but--much like Portal--the autosave allows a reload at the start of any level, which meant I never lost progress.
Speaking of Portal, the developers apparently got permission from Valve to set this game within the same universe. There are multiple overt calls to lore, which has the potential to delight or annoy the player, depending on your tolerance for that kind of thing. I personally didn't find it all that appealing.
That Shadow hurts me and my brain hurts
Absolute banger.
Seems Like A Great Game but i Don't Think my PC likes it Even on The Lowest Graphics, Bro is BURNING and the Dialogue Spikes up so imma give it be a luckier man and play it.
I'd give this game a 6/10.
It's obviously an homage to Portal with several references to Aperture, Cave Johnson, Cake, etc. It was quite fun to play; the voice acting was good; and it ran well on a 10 year-old Core i7 + GTX1050.
However, whilst similar in style to the Portal games, it's really not in the same league: the game mechanics are quite limited and so some of the puzzle solving can be a bit repetitive; the graphics are a but cartoon-ish (though that probably helps performance on my older PC); and it's relatively short - none of the puzzles are likely to have you scratching your head for more than a few minutes.
All that said, if you feel in need of a Portal-type fix and and you can pick this up at a reasonable discount, then it's worth a go.
Fantastic short puzzle game. Simple, but well utilized mechanics along with an unexpectedly clever story and witty dialogue. Highly recommend for fans of games like Portal or The Talos Principle.
Lightmatter is a pretty short and fun puzzle game, the story is pretty simple and easily enjoyable. However, as much as I had fun while doing the puzzles, the game is quite buggy, there were two instances of bugs I found, one of them kept making my game crash constantly, and to fix it, I had to change the FPS Limiter settings to 60 instead of Unlocked. The second problem I encountered was that during level 19 my game ran into a problem were the screen would flicker with random colors and I couldn't see anything, to fix I had to re-download the game. Besides those bugs, the game is quite fun, I would suggest playing it if you like puzzles.
Cool light based puzzle game
this game is awesome! The story plot is very engaging and interesting. There is great characters as well. The play time is nice and the puzzles are really fun as well.
Good game. A little short but enjoyable. Good puzzles. Interesting gameplay. I would have enjoyed it a few more hours if I could. So, try to get it on sale. (I have a 1 hour per dollar rule which I barely got this time).
Sure, maybe it is "Portal with lights" but I don't care what you believe or what you think
Any game with mantling gets an automatic recommendation from me
Saw a bunch of people saying this is the best puzzle game ever etc etc and was very disappointed because even tho the game is good it doesnt even come close to being the best. For a great experience, go play The Talos Principle. But I'd still recommend this game, on sale though.
Was surprised by this game, I wasn't expecting much but from the first level it gave me well more than what I was expecting. From the voice acting to visuals. The game was wonderful to play!
Gave me clear Portal vibes, almost felt like a love note to the game.
The overall mechanic of the game was very well done and fun to play round with.
Short and sweet. And plan on getting the last achievement this Friday.
