A good blend of Planetside 2 mechanics with Battle Royal Elements. Needs more players to really get the most out of it, but it has excellent potential, in my opinion. Def worth a try as it is free to play, teamwork seems to vastly outweigh any class skill you might get from the crate system.
Alright this is a review based on only a short few matches played so far, it can be frustrating to play if your team doesnt comunicate with each other but when you get a team that does its a ton of fun. so far it plays a little different from planetside 2 but has a similar feeling for anyone who has played it before. No major bugs have ruined the gameplay for me yet however hit registration can be very finicky at times where you can put a full clip dead center of a target and get no hits, this issues is largely offset by the fact that you can have your whole squad of 12 team mates backing you up. early gameplay is kinda slow most of the time with the major and massive fights taking place in the last few circles and is the most enjoyable battle royal systems ive played before. There are also vehicle spawns around the map leading to a more combined arms playstyle however lack of starting anti tank munitions will make it so if your team is unable to get tanks of your own or the means to destroy them with rocket launchers located in drop pods randomly around the map can lead you an impossible victory if the enemy has tanks of their own. overall its a incredilby fun game when you have a friendly and cohesive squad and is hindered mostly on poor hit registration and tough armor. Overall it has a few problems going into it but my hope is they can patch up some of these glaring issues and make this a very fun game overall. 6.5/10 so far worth a download (its free so obviously) and its only a a small download of 9gb
This game is very fun. It looks like a battle royale game, however the playing experience is not like that. The 12 players per team makes this, not about surviving the shrinking map but about working together as a squad.
Didn't really expect anything from squads. Triples was a nice experience enjoyed it, has it's own quirks but ultimately it's just another BR. Squads however is different with 12 people. It's an experience unlike anything else. I have 4k hours on Planetside 2 and I now prefer Planetside Arena over it. The action in squads is crazy especially when it's 300 players. However soloing in squads can vary quite a lot so it's very recommended to find people to play with. It's a unique experience and now my main game.
TTK is very high which I personally enjoy, actually have to aim and trade. Lot of interesting interactions with the large tool arsenal you have with 2 underbarrels, 2 abilities and grenades.
At it's peak, this game is amazing. Almost a worthy spiritual successor to Planetside 2. But that peak is few and far between.
The matchmaking is just bad and there is no tutorial so you are more often than not stuck with 1st time players who do not follow orders, get themselves killed and worst of all get assigned with the crucial squad leader role.
I really want to enjoy this game and am willing to support it through dreadful lootboxes, but at this point it's just an excercise in frustration. Come back in a few months when they are finished live-testing.
This game is still early access, but has potential.
The strong points of this game are intense squad play on a large scale. In order to get the best experience one should be a team player with a microphone, ideally with a team or a few friends.
One should also be made aware of the fact that the game did get bombed with negative reviews from Planetside 2 vets that disagree with Daybreak Games working on Planetside Arena as opposed to announcing Planetside 3. Take those with a grain of salt.
Some Pros
- Focus on squad play
- Free to play (you can just try it)
- Large map and scale
- Good balance overall; the game avoids frustrating mechanics such as OHK, cloak etc.
- A new take on Battle Royal and Arena shooters; includes squads and vehicles
- Nice art polish compared to the beta phase
Some Cons (points the game can improve on leading up to release)
- No tutorial, poor introduction to players that are not Planetside 2 veterans
- Currently too few people participating in the early access phase: Waiting time in lobbies; Maps don't fill up to their true potential and feel desolate as a result
- Monetization through lootboxes (which are tied to character loadouts via weapon mods, although their impact on an individual level is debatable) - I dislike the very existence of this form of monetization
- Currently a lack of long-term progression or engagement, no achievements on steam
[*]Missing some QOL features for friends management via Steam in game
With that being said, I would recommend people to observe how this title develops. The official launch isn't until Q2 2020, and until then many of the shortcoming might be addressed, while there is room to hone some of its strong suits. In the meantime you can just download it and try it for yourself.
Has promise. Stuff listed in the roadmap will vastly improve the game once they're implemented.
Minor P2W elements, not as serious as other reviews are indicating. Skill will easily trounce any of the advantages. They are there, though, that much is absolutely true and the marketing team needs to stop pretending otherwise.
Cash grab. I gave the game a shot and even bought the legendary pack to give Daybreak a chance. 235 crates later all from the opening the crates given to me still did not unlock the limited amount of items available to unlock. If someone bought that straight out it would be insane the amount of money they would need to spend in order to unlock everything. I may come back and give the game a shot later but your loot box chances are crap.
I like the planetside vibe but the gun play is awful.
I see how they went F2P so if you buy the DLC packs hard to get a refund.
It's a very solid game. The squad mode where you play with 11 other people in your squad against a few other squads is a blast! Just after 9h of playing I had a lot of intense moments.
It may happens that your squad gets surrounded by three other squads and it feels like your squad is the last resistance.
Or your squad faces of another one behinde some cover like rocks/mountains and it turns into a grave war.
Sometimes you think your squad easily wins this round because there a three tanks in your control but suddenly you get ambushed from a mountain top with heavy weapons.
Every round is diffrent and puts you in a new adventure!
Since this mode is a battle royle it requires are more tactical approach because a fallen soldier is here a way heavier loss and can turn the tables easily. So comunication and sticking together is key for success.
Another great addition is that you can choose your weapon loadout before the match starts, so you can choose your three favorite weapons and don't need to pray to find it in any loot crate on the map. Except for heavy weapons like rocket launchers. And even though this game is free to play you have all the currently available weapons (13 in total) from the start without grinding or paying any real money.
Cons:
- There is currently no progression system
- You can unlock new stuff like cosmetics and mods (small percs for your classes and weapons) only with lootboxes
Made the mistake of buying this, what a hunk of junk. It only looks like planetside, and just barley, it plays like a tub of mud. the movements are slow, and you feel bulky.it is a crappy clone of the new age loot shooters. what a pile of garbage.
Having played for years in Planetside 2 I have to say I think this game is great!
No....it isn't Planetside 3 and yes its using reworked PS2 assets which is fine by me.
I think alot of the negative reviews are for a few reasons:
1) It isnt PS3 and some hardcore fans are bitter about it.
2) It's early access and a bit raw without the money, flare and polish of games like APEX or without the customization of games like Ring and PUBG that have been OUT of early access for a long time now. ( see their roadmap....they have quite a bit planned for this in the next 6-8 months . https://www.planetsidearena.com/news/early-access-roadmap-september-2019)
3) It's a Battle Royal......which as a genre is getting a bit long in the tooth I admit.
So could I get bored quick with Planetside Arena?....of course ....just like every other Battle Royal I loved for a bit then abandoned.
For now I love the aesthetic, the combat and I have to say 12 man squads are unique to this game and make for some very intense combat and strategy not seen in Battle Royal shooters limited to solo, duo or 4 man squads.
Planetside Arena is refreshing.
I played back in the "original beta" and the game has came a long way. Interface, HUD, graphics, and pretty much everything else is way better then before. Im a die hard PS2/Arena fan. They seem to have got it right this go round. I'm glad they didn't push to release back when this thing started. They did it right, got their affairs in order and put out something pretty amazing. I hope to see more people DL and play. Much more to come in the future, stick around.
Well this game is great. Everybody who doesn't like this game is either toxic, because of Planetside 2 or just simply hates Battle Royale.
I recommend this game but I can't recommend interacting with the "average community member" on reddit or even ingame unless they are actual friends. Even now that this game is free to play people complain. First they asked for it to be F2P as it was intended to be b2p, now they got it but still that is not enough.
I hope that Massive clash will be great and that we have some kind of big scale TDM. For everything else we have Planetside 2. This game is still in early access and ofc people now that there are some bugs and hickups, but that is ok IMHO. No reason to leave behind unfair reviews though.
Can't stand Battle Royale games.
Yet this game has managed to keep me entertained every minute from start to finish, every match I've played in a 6 hour non-stop session!
Game has lots of potential! Can't wait to see where this and Planetside 2 goes!
The squads mode is really interesting and gives a new dynamic to BR. Once the population in the games grow it will be a really fun and more fast paced of a game then it is now. Occasional bugs here and there (got stuck in a drop pod when the match started) but doesn't ruin the overall game. Really easy to pick up and start playing. It originally was to launch as a pay to play game but released as f2p due to overwhelming negative feedback because of the pay model.
I will try to make this short.
I play Planetside 2.
I've played battle royals.
This is not Planetside 2, like most negative reviews seem to think it is, or should of been. People should understand that going into this game. This is not like other battle royals either. Most battle royals, you land and try to find a gun before the guy next to you, then get shot because the building you looked in didn't have one. Pubga, Fortnight, its a die - restart - land - repeat game... which I find utterly tedious.
This is not a perfect game. It is fresh to early access so there will be bugs. This is daybreak games, no offense to them, but generally they don't have the game ready on release. Take planetside 2 release, lots of bugs, not optimized, so on.
This game is actually quite optimized, runs very well on high graphics for me. Again though not prefect. Some popins, some mushy ground textures... not the greatest.
However, the reason I play this game is because of the squad based gameplay. I understand there is a battle royal feature, where you drop down and gather stuff that improves your character... but thats what it does, it improves your already selected loadout and class. It upgrades your utilities, and keeps you in the fight.
Though you can get upgrades, those upgrades don't make you win... your skill does and your cooperation with your team. The reason I play this is because of the squad gameplay. Not to mention the other nice features of personal vehicles, dropping already with a gun, and the ability to respawn team members. But the fact you can run with 11 others and have genuine good squad combat? That is why I play.
I wanted squad based gameplay, where 1 squad could make a difference in planetside. I am getting it in this game, and that is what I wanted. I don't know what the future holds, what guns they will add or modes... but this is early access, and the devs are transparent... mostly.
If you want to experience something different you should give this game a try. Its free, so can't go wrong.
Not planetside 3, but that was not what i was expecting from this title. From the early days of reading about arena it was always meant to be more small scale focused. I see alot of potential for this title if it expands on different game modes using this engine, it seems pretty damn smooth so far and I could see small 50 v 50 maps be alot of fun.
While I miss the golden days of PS1 and PS2, this is a fun free title set in that universe, its nice to hop in and get some action rather quickly without the hurry up and wait of PS. However I felt some strong but sad memories on the map of the massive battles ive fought in PS2 in similar bases.
Is this game a 10/10, nah cant say that, maybe a solid 7. But it does not deserve the mostly negative reviews, if this game helps Planetside 3 happen one day then it is worth the endeavor.
An interesting new take on battle royale. I like the aspects of combined arms and focus on teamwork. A lot of people who play Planetside 2 might not like this because its not a sequel but it never claimed to be.
PlanetSide Arena fixes the "queue simulator" problem with most battle royals in various ways:
1. Loadouts allow players to be competitive from the start of the match.
2. Squads (teams of 12) give players a much larger force to play with and reduce their chances of being picked off early in the game.
3. Squads make missing a player a lot less impactful. In a team of 3, missing one player is a big deal. In a team of 12, missing one player is not nearly as detrimental.
4. Loot is plentiful, clearly marked, can be seen from distances, and is picked up with a single key press. No menu diving just to manage your inventory.
5. The currency allows players to gear up even if they are unlucky with finding loot around the map, allowing them to stay competitive throughout the match.
6. Allowing respawns from complete death gives players a reason to stay in-game after dying and enables teams to come back from a player deficit.
7. Deployable vehicles remove the massive advantage of having a vehicle versus players who don't.
It is a revamp for Planetside serie.
Battle royalle is a total bummer and 3rd person is an odd choice. So yeah, if not a PS fan just wait a couple months for more news, but I do recommend to follow up the development.
That said, it is a very early stage, new modes will give place for the game to grow back to it's roots. Giving a negative now would seem, to me, to ignore what it is to come, so I respect the work that clearly has been dedicated to this.
