Pretty damn good game, it will remind you of the older games while improving on them with fun gameplay and charming graphics. Overall a solid game, worth it for any fan of the series.
You know what's fun?
Being outrun by literally every enemy in the game, even the fat bastard ones? Having to chase down every enemy because they are all pussies and only dare attack from afar if they can get in a cheap-shot attack? Constantly being thrown shit like grenades and being shot at from the other side of the screen? Trudging along at a snail's pace because the martial arts experts forgot how to run and roll since their last game due to their midlife crisis? Having to ignore pretty much every move in the game because the only way to actually get somewhere is to spam the blitz attack?
No, these are not fun. Yet this is what Streets of Rage 4 is. Granted the franchise always had the pussy-banding AI as I like to call it, where everyone is always just running away from you, unless they can get you in the back. But you'd think after 25+ years of hiatus, we'd get something fresh and exciting and new. But no, we get the same tired, frustrating shit that is in some case is a step backwards from SOR 3.
This is an awesome game, very good following to SOR3, which was my favorite so far.
fantastic followup to the first three i remember playing the OG's as a kid with my dad. there are a couple frustrations i wouldnt call it perfect but super solid 9/10 and a real beat em up brought forward to the modern day
It felt janky to me, I wish I liked this as it's a well made game but the gameplay felt weird to me. Not my kind of beat em up
As a fan and owner of the first 3 games in the series, I am very satisfied with this sequel. Great attention was kept with all details, graphics and music are great too. A worthy sequel.
The gold standard for beat em ups if you ask me. Strikes the perfect balance of tight mechanics and button mashy goodness. Art is incredible. Soundtrack is glorious. Lots to bring you in and even more to keep you there if you want to dive deep into it.
Midlife crisis ex-cop misses the good ol days of police brutality. He goes on a PCP bender dressed as Axl Rose, bashing vagabonds while shouting "right up her!" 10/10
TLDR: Good old fashioned beat 'em up fun for up to 4 players but the online is completely dead. I hope you got friends. The game's very short.
Story: Citizens are going mad and the Y family is apparently to blame. The obvious solution is to go down the street and beat well over a thousand people up with your bare hands until you find the culprit!
Gameplay: Old fashioned beat them up, I'm sure the game is a lot funner on higher difficulties and with more people, but since online games are totally dead, I was with me, myself and I.
Each characters play differently enough to want to try them all, or at the very least pick one that suits your gameplay style.
It's a beat them up, there's not much to else to say.
Graphics: While I woulda have liked a bit more SFX for its price tag, the animation style looked nice.
Audio: Probably the weakest part of the game as sound effects aren't especially good, and get repetitive very quick. I mean it's to be expected from a beat them up but... Still.
If you are looking for a game like this, there are alternatives, like Castle Crashers and Charlie Murder, just off the top of my head, which offer more progression and to me last longer. But as far as recent games go, this is good enough. Get it on sales though, because it gets old pretty quick and doesn't offer more than it's face value.
Updated graphics but old school feel, great music, great gameplay. You can tell the devs loved the franchise.
Best new old game!
Good nostalgic wibe))
Reminds me of the times when
my brothers and I played this game on SEGA Mega Drive ☺☺☺
Great respect to the authors of the project,
they have preserved the visual style and audio of the previous original games.
Where has the game character "Skate" gone?
Please bring back these characters:
Eddie "Skate" Hunter (Sammy in Japan),
Dr. Gilbert Zan, Roo.
Amazing beatemup. Visuals, audio and game play are on point. Got the vibes from the Sega genesis days right. Also, the survival mode is really nice addition.
Classic beatemup action with fun characters and is even better with a friend.
I didn't like the gameplay at first because most of the characters seem very slow after playing SOR3 but the sheer variety of characters unlocked is incredible and the game gets better and better the more you invest yourself into the points and rankings system. By the time you unlock Shiva SOR3, you will be having a blast.
This how you take a classic and bring it into the modern age, whilst still paying homage to the classic 16bit era. Art style is flawless, controls are tight and music slaps as hard as any SOR2 tune.
very nice 2D graphics but gameplay gets boring quick. The ending is a huge let down. Beat it, uninstall it, forget about it. Next !
If there was a neutral review, that's what I'd give this game. It's gorgeous and plays well. However, I hate how slow the character is. The bosses are incredibly unfun and hard. I barely beat this game on easy. Won't be replaying it.
Overall I thought it was a really well done Beat Em Up game. The music was great. I don't know much about the SOR series. The animations and play control seemed really solid. Online play was a cool bonus that helped me to get through many levels that I just could not seem to on my own. A long with Shredders revenge, one of the better BEUs made today imho.
Fun Beat'em up. Reminds me of the 90's.
high skill ceiling, very fun
Vaguely remember these games on NES/SNES but pretty fun to play just to kill some time.
Couldn't find anyone playing Online like I did the TMNT games but still a fun throwback.
Classic SOR goodness with a bitching soundtrack. Plenty of good replay value too.
Клевое продолжение, клевой серии игр ! Советую всем любителям битем апов!
Worth every penny. 1 10 out of 10 sound track, plays exactly like the original SOR Games on SEGA. Nostalgic AF and one of the best beat 'em ups to exsist
Best brawling game out there.
I love all the action, violence, and plot-twists.
Streets of Rage 4 is a total blast! The nostalgic feel of the classic beat 'em up gameplay is perfectly paired with stunning modern visuals and an amazing soundtrack. The character roster offers great variety, each with their own unique moves and playstyles, keeping the action fresh. The combo system is satisfying, and the co-op mode makes it even more fun with friends. Whether you're a fan of the old-school Streets of Rage or new to the series, this game nails that perfect balance of nostalgia and innovation. Highly recommend for anyone looking for some classic arcade-style fun! ONE OF THE MOST BORING GAMES TO DO 100%
really like the survival mode.. devs should definitely keep building on it, its unique and fun and adding more upgrades and dungeons and enemies would be pretty great.
This game is not like Mortal or Street fighter this is a whole different world from the graphics to the REALLY and REALLY RECOMEND this game
A really solid beat 'em up game with beautiful visual and great soundtracks.
Price is high for a 2 hour beat em up', maybe coop and online pvp can justify the price, but the lobbies were empty when I tried to connect, so there is that. Can't recommend at the full price, and even the discounted version is a bit much, in my honest opinion.
If you like Castle Crashers you'll like this game.
Exceptional game, in graphics, game modes, and gameplay. Combat is extremely satisfying with each hit emphasized by sounds and visuals; The enemies are diverse, the scenarios detailed and unique.
I also love how well balanced the game is in terms of its scenes and the length of its levels. It is a game that can be finished quickly, but there are so many characters, movements, and combos to perform, that the length of the game ends up being infinite if you like the dynamics of the game.
I also bought the expansion “Mr. X Nightmare”, I was a little skeptical because I had heard that it was just a survival mode and nothing more, but it has a lot of content. It is a “Survival” mode but it has upgrades between each wave of enemies, as well as different scenarios, and on top of that, you can unlock moves for each character - which you can use in all game modes -, the expansion also adds some very good characters that serve as bosses in the story mode, but because of their moves and the way they play; They are extremely fun to try.
In general, I was quite impressed, I think it is one of the best beat'em ups I have ever played; simply fantastic in every way.
Brings back memories, lots of fun. Great sequel. Highly recommended, play with friends or family.
The GOAT of Beat Em' Ups, plain and simple.
4 years on and still coming back for another round. Great gameplay, great graphics and sound. And a dash of nostalgia.
I liked it because its a good take on old-school beatemups. good repeat value.
90's arcade nostalgia! Thanks to the creators of this game! I am loving this!
If you are a classic SoR fan and considering this game, please be aware that there isn't much here you haven't seen before other than a group of largely mediocre new fighters, and incredibly irritating new physics mechanics.
On the slim chance you've ever played the fan-made game SoR: Remix, then you've seen a lot of the "new features" already anyway, as they were ripped directly out of that title without any attribution. These include the survival mode, in-depth gameplay customizations (which this game tacks on but doesn't really use to the same positive effect), network play (which I have never tried as I don't play games online), and being able to "buy" new features or upgrades by grinding parts of the game repeatedly.
I found the main story mode pretty difficult at first, but after some practice, the new mechanics clicked a little better (no thanks to the "training" mode which is infuriating as designed). The game doesn't really hold your hand, for better or worse. If you can make it through training mode without wanting to break your game machine, you're doing better than me. I had several whole sections I couldn't complete in training because they were impossible for me to pull off. (I never had these difficulties in the older titles, oddly.)
The graphics, sound, and music are all really decent. I didn't care for some of the new graphical UI effects, though, they were disorienting and a bit nauseating at times.
What I absolutely cannot stand about this new title is that the "new" physics mechanic I noted earlier can largely be boiled down to juggling your enemies. That's the main salient new feature of SoR4. Really! It's just button mashing. High-tech, right?
Juggling mechanics are a huge turn-off in fighting games for me, at least in part because I'm physically incapable of performing the necessary combos. When I realized that was basically all that's "new" about SoR4 I was left with an incredibly bad taste in my mouth. I haven't picked it up again since, as I've beat the (disappointingly short, incredibly boring) story mode within a day and didn't feel interested in spending any more time on these Streets of Regret.
MY 6-y.o. LOVES IT
I wanted some game that I can play with my little son (6 years old). We tried Ninja Turtles, but it did not click for us. Then we tried this and it is perfect. We finished the game on Easy, then on Normal and now we are trying to go through it on Hard difficult. I also bought the DLC and I love the new characters like the kungfu fighter or the police women.
Great game, I wish they did more DLCs with more content, or that there were more beat-them-up games of this super high quallity.
nice game but the story too short
Solid entry into the Streets of Rage franchise. Mechanics are smooth and the incentive to play through to earn additional characters is a nice touch to increase replayability.
[X] Arcade Cabinet Friendly
[X] Fun with Friends
[X] Replay Value
What I Like
A nod to the originals with playable characters from past games while holding smooth mechanics.
Different modes and challenges at a range of difficulty levels.
Visuals & soundtrack are fantastic.
What I Like Less
You can't play online + local co-op.
Getting stuck in a corner can be ruthless. Oof.
Incredibly fun, mixes nostalgia with all new content and have I mentioned incredibly fun?
It's a really good beat'em up. You don't need to be a fan of Streets of Rage in particular to enjoy it. The gameplay is just solid. I appreciate we can now recover the HP we lose for using special moves, I am no longer afraid to use them and they make the fights that much more enjoyable, and impressive. The graphics and the animations are really good too. It's colourful, the power moves and the expositions look impressive, it's reminiscent of a comic book in some ways.
The game may have been a bit expensive when it came up, but now it is definitely a must buy for fans of the genre. Especially if you can get it on rebate. It's one of the best Beat'em made during the last couple of years, up there with titles such as Double Dragon Gaiden and Shredder's Revenge.
well that sucked!!
the art looked ok but the game bytes. no new moves no improvement infact it plays worse.
1. why the hell am i using my own dam health as a special attack, I barley have any moves as it is and your urging me to use less moves or die, well i choose die, game over! bye!
2.the fun of the real Streets of rage is not here! this is a cheap scrolling rip off feel at best!
not only have they failed to capture the original they made it less spectacular and less fun!
ignore this and play streets of rage 2 on the sega emulator on steam!
If you love beat em ups..well my friend this might be the best of the best..insane combos and the characters are all unique..10/10
If you're a fan of old school Streets of Rage, you will be a fan of this. It introduces more complex AI and varying degrees of difficulty to get your groove back before you bump it up. Each character plays a little differently, offering different play styles, same as the original legendary game. The artwork is brilliant, old school sprite-intensive, which I'm so happy to see making a comeback with modern lighting effects, it looks really cool.
But most of all, the thing that really makes this game shine, is the MUSIC!!!! I wanna play it on the loud system and bump the house when I play it. The tracks are SO GOOD and they are interactive with the progression of the game as well. LOVE IT.
I used to rent a whole sega genesis (when I was well behaved) from the local video store and this was usually one of the two games I was allowed. I've unlocked about half of the characters and it remains fun to try different ones and figure out their nuances.....and having multiplayer functionality only makes it better if you want to join a friend.
The icing on the cake was that my ibuffalo works on this game (snes clone) without any issues. That's the controller I grew up on for button mashers and it's great for this
I really like this game! Excellent play mechanics, nice setting, catchy music.
Fantastic beat-em-up package, rewarding gameplay, great replayability, absolutely horrendous netcode.
SoR4 expands on the classic beat-em-up title taking inspiration from fighting games and applying concepts throughout the gameplay. From stuff like combos, to air juggles, wall and ground bounces, chargeable moves, as well as recoverable health, it's difficult not to notice how many game tropes are littered throughout and this is absolutely a good thing! There's no way you can't see Commissioner's full screen grab and not thing Rugal's God Press/Gigantic Pressure, or see Floyd with his giant metal arms and him shouting GOTCHA! and not thinking of Mortal Kombat's Jax.
The initial cast is diverse enough that each character has its own strengths and weaknesses - Axel and Blaze are well rounded, Cherry is a speedster with a dash and low damage, Floyd is a slow but powerful Tank, and Adam is a fast combo-machine. Then SoR4 pulls a Smash Ultimate and says "EVERYONE IS HERE" meaning that you can unlock practically every character from every version of the series including SoR1 Adam, SoR2 Max, and even SoR3 Shiva and Roo. These aren't cut and paste jobs either as their movesets and mechanics that they carry over have been balanced to match the flow of the game. I'm not going to say the balance is perfect, but for the most part it's well thought out. With over 20 character variations to choose from, this game is insanely replayable as well.
The game's combo system is also rewarding, yet also frustrating as well. It's a key factor in determining your overall score and is smartly tied to the amount of damage you do, not the number of hits - so you can't just hit an unbreakable object a bunch of times. Your score is also a huge factor as there are no "extra lives" to be picked up like in previous titles. The number of lives you have is directly tied to your score - for better and worse. Take too long to hit something, and your combo score cashes out. Get hit once and your combo breaks and you lose everything you've built - which could even go as far as the first hit of the level. High score aficionados will have a field day trying to optimize how to get through the game while trying to carry a combo from the start of the stage right to the end of the boss. Speedrunners will care less about score, and try to use exploits to get through as fast as possible, sacrificing their own health-bar in the process and often being one hit away from losing a life.
Unfortunately the biggest flaw is a major one as it uses the outdated delay-based netcode meaning that online sessions with people who don't live in close proximity will often be laggy and sluggish. The current industry standard used by many fighting games is rollback netcode which, while not perfect, eliminates most of the pitfalls that delay-netcode has. This game also doesn't have cross-platform support which is a huge disappointment considering that it's available on all 4 major platforms PC, PSN, Nintendo Online and XBL and those communities can only play with each other and not together. The game also offers an offline 4 player co-op mode, but is completely unavailable online as the maximum number of players in an online session is 2, unless you use 3rd party software like Parsec.
Barring that, this is one of the best beat-em-ups you can get and is a great modern take on the genre.
Just a really fun fast paced beat 'em up. I think it's better than the TMNT Shredders Revenge by a good margin, and that's still a great game. The DLC is awesome, having a rouge lite beat 'em up is just a chef's kiss
