I have played a lot of 2D platformers, and I had a lot of fun playing Jack Axe. I would absolutely recommend giving this a try on casual difficulty - if you get unlucky with crashes like some people seem to have experienced, opt for the refund.
i like what i played of this game, not sure why it seems so under preforming. this concept turned into a metroidvania would be better than Celeste IMO. but on sale, i think this game is good for anyone who likes precision platformers with some bosses.
ill return to this game at some point, and update the review if i have to.
I generally prefer to focus on the positives, especially in indie games with discount price tags, but Jack Axe has at least one game breaking bug.
In the last level, right before the boss, I got stuck in a scene after going through a door. I quit to the title and restarted, and... now loading my save boots me back to the title screen! Even creating a new save file is stuck in the same way.
Aside from that, here was my impression of the first 99% of the game:
Pros:
+ Satisfying axe locomotion. You can combine wall jump, arc jump (down+attack), air axe, dash-to-axe, and extra jump after axe catch. You can sequence break a few things in a really satisfying way!
+ Great color palette, very legible platform graphics, very fun to look at despite simplicity.
+ Fast loads, so there's very little downtime, like Super Meat Boy or Celeste. Very easy to guzzle in one sitting.
Cons:
- My save file is broken, and I am extremely discouraged from ever playing it again
- The swimming is unacceptable. Jack doesn't swim like Mario or other well-known platformers. She pivots 360 degrees around a point above her head, so changing direction can swivel her into obstacles in directions other than where you're pointing.
- Some of the graphics are not up to the same level as the others. Different water textures overlapping are just sprites on top of each other and don't tile together cleanly. The lava monster is scaled way up and way more pixelated than everything else. Etc. It's just not coherent.
- Some of the mechanics are fighting against each other. There's no health, 1-hit kills, which is fine on its own, but that makes it a chore to get killed while traversing the large main areas and get sent back pretty far.
- The level design can feel a little aimless. Some games have really great landmarks and sense of place, but I often forgot where I was in the larger areas.
I was wondering why this game had so many negative reviews.
Yes... there are a few bugs here and there, okay, the currency and death system maybe could be better, but to me those issues ranged from unnoticed to minor inconveniences. I guess the "weird" design choices listed in other reviews might not be everyone's cup of tea, but I didn't find them as annoying as to leave a negative review. Cute graphics, controls felt good, there are several difficulty options and the standard difficulty felt reasonable and fun.
I've had a good time with Jack Axe. That was until I've encountered a gamebreaking bug in the last world of the game which left my save file useless, and the only suggestion I've found is to start over. So that's my reason to leave a negative review.
Could have been a great game, but as filled by unaddressed bugs as it is, I can't recommend it.
I bought this 75% off and I don't feel happy with my purchase.
Using the controller and on normal difficulty, I found this to be a slog. The main problems are the movement and being a one-hit wonder.
Your movement seems very inspired by Mario Odyssey, which is good. You can jump, throw your axe, zoom to it, double jump, then dive. Good! We have movement tech! A couple problems though:
1: These all must be done in order. You can not, for instance, jump, double jump, then dive. In fact, the double jump ONLY appears after zooming to your axe, resulting in me not even knowing you could do that until over halfway through the game. The closest you can get to a mix up is a jump-dive, which is awful because-
2: You jump sucks and your dive sucks worse. Most ledges, anything larger than waist-high, is insurmountable to the jump. This means that 99% of the jumps in the game, no matter how short, require the axe throw. The dive is much worse however. Once a dive is initiated, you are stuck in a fixed arc until you land. This will kill you 100% of the time. Unlike in Mario Odyssey, where you are diving to large flat expanses in a 3d environment, this game expects you to either dive onto short, moving platforms near enemies or to not dive at all.
3: By the way, the axe throw also sucks: You can zoom to it, which is fun and all, until you are expected to go straight up. I mean, going at an angle is a little finicky sometimes, but at least you can see where you are going. When going straight up the move will launch you into unknown territory, and there WILL be enemies and hazards you need to dodge. Just cross your fingers and remember, you die in one hit.
4: Oh, don't worry, there is also some of the worst swimming I've had the pleasure of playing in tight corridors with quick hazards.
And if the movement makes the one-hit death rough, the bosses make it intolerable. Some of them are tolerable, but none of them are fun. One has required swimming, one has homing projectiles filling up the screen while you dodge them with your freakin' axe jump, and the final boss is a snooze until his last phase where he decides you don't get to see the ground for three seconds and you should really just get good dodging rain.
One hp, remember.
There is little redeeming the game, unfortunately. The game has no plot. It pretends for about half of a tutorial level, then gives up. Maybe this is to facilitate a multiplayer focus? I don't know. But I know it's better than the music. If I have to hear that fucking boss music one more time I'm going to wipe my hard drive. And yes, there are even a couple bugs. Mostly harmless, but the occasions where the platform moved and I didn't were less than ideal.
The level design was... enough to engage me? But it's a collectathon game where half of the collectibles are out in the open, and the other half are at the end of gauntlets, it feels odd.
I guess, to end the game on as much positive as I can, this game isn't a time-waster. There are no stupid 100% achievements aside from the clown (of all the things to take from Odyssey, the volleyball minigame? really?) and you don't need anywhere near all of the collectables to move on with the game. And it does look pretty. But it's such a struggle to come up with things to like that I feel like compared to what I feel is at best passable.
So I give the downvote. Please, spend your time on something else.
basically just mario odyssey minus the captures if it was 2d and made by an indie studio. movement feels great once you get the hang of it. world 4 is a weak point imo but it picks back up afterward. it's not too long, I definitely recommend it.
It is a fun game, but there is game breaking bug that can occur when you walk back through a door that prevents your save file from being loaded, which bricked my save right before the final boss fight.
Get it on sale. It's a cute little indie game with decent mechanics that doesn't overstay its welcome. That is... it's short. Very short. But I don't regret playing it.
Some cons: The difficulty is a bit all over the place. And the very end gets a little tedious. Oh yeah, and the swimming is rather frustrating. I don't know who decided that's how swimming should work in this game, but they were wrong if they thought it would be more fun than something more akin to a 2D Mario style.
But all in all, you'll have some fun and be done with it before you know it.
As far as retro style platformers go, Jack Axe is one that is very easy to miss. Let me be clear, THIS CAN BE A REALLY FUN GAME. The finding of Runes and little secrets is really promoted, and the sense of exploration, along with the fun jumping mechanics of the game really boost the enjoyment and what platformers should really be about. Tie in the forgiving checkpoints and fast travels, the game becomes a very approachable, yet difficult little gem. Boss battles are very fun and varied, yet also rely heavily on memorization and registering of events, almost impossible to beat one on a first try.
Generally a very good time.
However...
The game has many issues that stem from a lack of actual measuring or insufficient playtesting. Many times platforming sections, which you can tell are designed to be quick and buttery, will have odd hiccups, or points that feel somewhat disjointed, like the jump lengths or the way it should be played is counterintuitive to the mechanics of the game. A slight lack of polish. It also seems like when you get deeper into the game the developer was running out of time, or they were rushing to end the game. Everything feels rushed or very abrupt later on, and some extras or secrets seem to lack any actual reward. (There is a hidden underwater cave in World 4 with no discernable reason for its existence, the locked door on world 5, etc.)
For a budget title, this is totally worth it.
Have fun, godspeed.
Overall it's kinda meh. it feels unfinished and is lacking in story but i'd still like to give it a chance because I can see the potential this game had. The most fun part of the game is the juggling minigame in my opinion.
I want to recommend this game to other people, because it's genuinely fun. But I can't do so in good faith due to certain bugs that seem to crop up near the end.
Certain levels in the 5th world don't seem to have a proper background, consisting instead of light and dark blue squares. While I was happy for the music change, it still felt like the game was in beta or something. World 6 also had visual affects that have to do with the water orbs, like they were placed in the wrong area or something.
Finally, the game just straight up crashed while I was fighting what I presume was the final boss. Until this point, I was willing to forgive the repetitive music and the, I'll admit few out of the many I had, deaths that were not really my fault (my biggest example being when I ground pounded breakable blocks and dived head first into a fish I had no hope of seeing) since death isn't really that big of a deal, but these problems soured what was otherwise a good game I could enjoy in one sitting without much issue.
If you read these reviews, please let me know when/if these issues get fixed and I'll happily recommend the game.
I have 3 separate save files for this game, each of which the game is broken for a different reason and could not be completed. Do with this information what you will.
I playtested this game back when it was in dev and had high hopes and got more than what i expected.
its good for speedrunning or even casual players. with multiplayer you have a chance to race your friends or mess around. there are also fun easter eggs and plenty of secrets. however it does still need some bugfixing
9.5/10
This game has GREAT movement tech. I see some clear inspiration from Super Mario Odyssey, with splashes of Celeste and I Wanna Be the Guy (minus the unfair troll stuff) thrown in. The gameplay is smooth, the platform challenges are well designed and a lot of fun, and I've managed to combine various jump strategies to pull off some wild, probably-unintended sequence breaks. Easy to pick up, and great fun to master.
Jack Axe has a very colorful world but don't let that fool you. Behind the cuteness of it's environment and characters, lies a very fun hardcore platformer. You get unlimited re-tries when you die in a level. I really love the feeling of the axe mechanic as you zoom around the levels fighting baddies and a boss per stage. Overall it's a fun experience for me. I recommend it to anyone who likes hardcore platformers.
Just finish the game.. all i can say is, its very addictive because of the with each bosses but frustrating because of the 1hit point and restart over again.
im playing with standard mode btw
Jack Axe is a funny short platformer game where the main mechanic is to throw an axe and dash to it. It tries to replicate more challenging and difficult games, not succeeding much, as I didn't find it too difficult, but it still manages to be a lot of fun. I played it on release so it had a lot of bugs, I would recommend waiting for some patch before buying it. Nevertheless, it's a great game that won't take you much to even 100% (being 5 hours my time), I recommend it.
The platformer genre is my favorite genre, and this is a hard pass for me. The level design and first boss fight just felt too too amateur and unpolished. The axe concept is good, which is what caught my attention, but the execution didn't deliver.
Great Game!! nice old school graphics with fast paced platform mechanics, just played a few hours but it feels very addictive i will recommend it with no doubts
Jack Axe is a seriously great game (which is seriously hard)! The platforming mechanic with the axe is very cool — use it to zip over long drops or to cut through obstacles, which is great fun. The game itself is gorgeous, with cheery colours and fun maps. I'm having a blast playing it on my lunch breaks. Definitely recommended!
im on the fence on this one the movement is too simple your just gonna be throwing your axe and long jumping the dungeons are so boring and the first boss it so bad all he does is throw down snowball smash ground but after 10 times you cant damage him turns out you have to make him hit ice and it just gets faster thats all not to mention the first map is horrific the most fun i had was juggling some balls they clearly copy pasted half of it i would give it a 6/10 if they improve maps and movement it would be higher
Fun game. The movement felt nice and I liked the axe mechanic. There is even a secret mechanic (most likely unintended): you can litterally climb walls if you try hard enough
The art is pretty and the music noice.
There were some janky hitboxes (mostly on the water enemies), but that's not that big of a deal.
There should definitely be more achievements tho. Like I've gotten all the achievements while just playing casually.
For example an achievement for collecting all the runes. There is no reason to collect them all without any reward.
And an achievement for beating the game on Hard and Cursed mode. Maybe even one for getting all the costumes idk.
Besides that I would definitely recommend this game.
Overall, the game is great and I didn't want to stop playing until the end. If you enjoy difficult platformers then you'll find yourself at home here. I played single player so I can't say good or bad about the co-op aspect but it does support 4 players locally. The axe mechanic is very fun and there are a lot of neat techniques you can combine in order to progress through the game. A lot of the levels are designed pretty well and I quite enjoy the cute graphics the game has to offer.
Random negatives: Swimming in this game is torturous in my opinion. You constantly move forward and make very wide turns so you just get "got" by the game if you make one tiny wrong move sometimes. Thankfully there is only 1 world where swimming is super prominent. The game is also pretty short overall. I got every achievement and beat the game in well under 3hrs and could have done it in less if I wasn't goofing around for a while. That being said, I quite enjoy tough platformers so it might take others longer. The story feels like it was an afterthought, there isn't much there. Minor bugs here and there as well as occasional grammar errors but those didn't affect me much at all.
TL;DR Game is short and water sucks but it's really fun and probably worth it overall. Feel free to ask questions if I missed anything.
