Nice little 3D platform game in psychedelic backgrounds (remember the Astral Plane in Control?). The game can be finished in one hour. There are some cool mechanics, the backgrounds have some diversity in the craziness, but the best part is the music (a little Akira style) that evolves with the action, and sometimes it looks like all the area is pulsing on the rhythm of the music!
Hella cool experience.
Absolutely bumpin soundtrack.
Almost didn't get motion sick.
Very much recommend this.
I had more fun in these 37 minutes than in many other much lengthier games.
warnings:
simulation sickness (screenshake, wildly changing camera directions)
photosensitive epilepsy (one chapter in particular)
brilliant little game/experience with incredible sound design and graphics. Bit mindboggeling it only has 148 reviews so far. A real gem.
Matter is certainly interesting, as it combines zen with intensity well through it's vibrant soundtrack, but that's about all, to be honest. If the game had been marketed as an interactive album and sold for maybe $3-5 AUD then I would recommend it quite readily, but as it stands, it's simply not all that interesting to play and doesn't present anything memorable. It's essentially a glorified point and click (not that there's anything wrong with that, but I don't think that's what the dev was going for). If you're into abstract games with a cool soundtrack, then I would recommend it when it's on sale, but otherwise, no.

I was hoping it would last longer but alas I completed the game in 30 or so minutes. For some reason it launched my steam VR but it doesn't work in VR... I was really hoping it was going to work because this game would be sweet with VR.
Has a very strange, unpleasant stuttering at "high" graphical settings despite being well above 60fps. Reducing the graphics unfortunately removes a lot of the beauty of the game, which is why I bought it in the first place. There's potential, but the game's ideas are executed through clunky, buggy means. I did quite like the sound design, though.
Exactly the surreal adventure I was looking for! Was craving something like this today, and here it is!
Even though it's not a VR game, I simply put it on fullscreen desktop in Oculus Rift and it works quite well in VR.
It's ok, but It's a little short. I beat the game in 30 minutes so I don't know if its worth the price. I think they could have done more with the idea. the aesthetic is really cool though.
This game is profoundly different than I expected. I think it's pretty darn cool anyways. It's basically just a jumping game, but it has really cool music and a unique artstyle. Its controls are solid, its gameplay isn't too repetitive if you get into the music. (and even if it was repetitive, the game's really short so it doesn't matter) My main complaint, as I just said, is that it's only 30 minutes. So, if you're looking for a longer indie game, this isn't the place to come to. Very cool overall, though!
Great if you are looking for a quick and stimulating runner! The music often set hair standing tones and the eerie visuals create a memorable experience that I hope is used in all this dev's games.
Matter is an experience. A somewhat short but very sweet class in sound design and world building. It's like meditation. Very cool
Small warning to maybe stay away if you easily get motion sick but aside from that highly recommended.
It started off promising, but the performance of the game as a whole was abysmal even though my computer more than met the recommended specs. Lowering the graphics quality by a lot makes the game run smoother yes, but other than destroying how the game looks visually it actually becomes so bright that key objects in the distance become nearly impossible to see.
But most importantly, what really ruined the experience for me was the motion blur. I'm usually ambivalent on this type of feature (I'm usually not a fan of it) but in this game it makes moving around feel very disorienting and turns the crystal clear graphics into mush, and the worst part is there's no way to turn it off.
Matter overall, while having a really trippy and ambient concept that I often love seeing, misses the mark completely with its nauseating graphic filters and deceptive computer spec recommendations.
In a word: Exhilarating.
That was an amazing way to spend 40 minutes. What a rush.

PROS
+ fast-paced parkour runner on training wheels. I have never really been a fan of first person runners but Matter is very forgiving and feels like it will nudge you onto platforms that you don't really think you should have made.
+ absolutely kicking soundtrack. The music is fantastic for the game with each level having its own unique sound and feel.
+ evolving. The game introduces a few different way to traverse the landscape and it doesn't ever feel stale.
+ surreal. The whole thing is a psychedelic trip through a land where gravity seems to be optional.

CONS
- pricey. I don't know how you put a price limit on games but I think 5 bucks for under an hour of content is a bit expensive......usually. For Matter I have to make an exception. It was basically like buying a ticket for a ride on a rollercoaster only I get to keep the rollercoaster and ride it whenever I want.

What a cool game. At some points I felt like something out of a Marvel movie, making insane leaps and crashing to the ground on one knee in the superhero pose. I couldn't help but think of SUPERHOT with the stylish blocks dripping with deep colours and that feeling again of being somewhere otherworldly where I had insane powers.
Matter is an excellent joyride of a game.
O Matter is a short game that lasted me less then an hour to complete. Definitely a new and largely unexplored idea and just for that I will recommend this game. I really wish there was a little more substance in the realm of story, as I got pretty confused in the latter parts of the game. Or as to what the Devs where trying to say. That being said I have a feeling that was the goal.
I have no idea when was the last time that I had as much simple and pure fun playing a game like just now playing Matter. Yes, it is a platformer (in its own particular way) but it is also borrowing heavily from Rez.
Definite recommendation for everyone thinking about experimenting with psychodelics!
I bought this just because it looked cool and it was on sale, but HOOOOLY COW does this game exceed expectations. Absolutely bizarre experience; glitchy, different, and even the music took me on a whole other journey. Definitely worth the money. Even the ending had me questioning what it all meant, if it even meant anything at all. Regardless. Awesome game!
Okay, this game was great. So great that I wish it contained more of an hour of content. Trippy, exotic, candy for your mind, very enjoyable experience. Give us more!
This is my choice for the 2019 Outstanding Visual Style Award nominee.
Matter focuses on creating an emotional tone rather than on obstructing progression. Success lies in enjoying the experience as you are careening inevitably to a conclusion.
There is a definite epochal progression in atmosphere through three pairs of chapters and a denouement, which is reflected in the pacing and complexity of the gameplay challenges.
While Matter has some anxious, frustrating and melancholy moments, the fun (positive reinforcement) to anxiety (negative reinforcement) ratio is solidly favorable.
I don't know what this is but I like it.
Also brave from the developers to make a game like this that's under 2 hours long^^

Small indie game but astonishingly good. The audio and graphics immerse you into literally the most beautiful universe I've ever seen in a video game. I found this game by chance and I just cannot believe this game is not more popular.

Matter is...exhilarating yet soothing.
Quite an oxymoron, but it's exactly that.
In this nonsensical, linear, first person platformer, you serve as an entity of sorts without a physical representation having no real objective but to move forward, taking aim and jumping in the direction of a progressive color distinct platform that you're gravitated towards.
The incentive is unknown, some may think of it as a sperm's journey towards an egg, a disease being spread across or just an electron revolving around the nucleus of an atom. In all honestly, you really can't make much sense of it apart from all that serving as an atmospheric, psychedelically visualized, parkour-esque, short lived adventure.
As advertised, it was pleasurable,
however didn't come free of pain.
- A fatal error crash at a progression of 80%. Successfully cleared on 2nd attempt.
- An abrupt loss of audio at Zone 3.
- No options menu or graphical settings. ( likely intended )
More annoying aspects that should be taken note of.
- No option to save progress.
- Does NOT mention that the tap of the ESC key serves as a button to exit (without a confirmation prompt)
- Does NOT mention the fact that this game is meant to be played under one sitting.
- Neither achievements nor trading cards included.
FInal summation:
Although despite what is stated, Matter is unique and caters perfectly to the audience it's meant for. Would be looking forward for more such like content from this indie developer.
Delightful escapade at a cost of a few tolerable nuisances. Grab only if you're into such atmospheric platformers.

You most certainly nailed it. I loved every second of it. A great game if you need some distraction from everyday life.
Please don't dissappear, dev....I for one would love more distractions in the matter....uhm..as a matter of fact (I did it again), I also like that its not all about dark matter...but to move towards the light! ok ok, I will stop now.

Wow - this is actually one of the most creative games I've played this year. I'm very impressed by what they were able to accomplish here. There are different types of gravity for different parts of the game and it always seems to slightly adjust the gravity as you go based on where you are jumping from and I think that's really impressive.
It's essentially a platformer that's also a puzzle game. I believe it takes place on the sub-atomic level but I could be mistaken about that. It seems like most everything you come across is some sort of matter on a sub-atomic level. I've been really surprised by a few of these December releases on Steam. There are definitely a handful that have made it onto my Games of the Year list and I think this is going to be one of them.
