I'm guessing it's meant to be a laid back slice of life story. It's well written and characters are thought out and memorable enough.
But you start as a stranger who can't share his real name or real circumstances and only stay for a year, after which you'll move back. So everyone you meet has deeper connections with others than you do, and there's little point in trying to build bonds - you're even reminded by others that it's pointless to do so. you can't take em' along or break to them that you lied about everything. So you're left as a bystander watching everyone else have fun and lead lives while you live your weird little year amonst common people. Even winning the election to class president alongside a local, you're left out of the loop, lol.
But if the relationship part is not really a thing in this visual novel with dating elements, surely the magic school thing gotta be interesting? Or at the very least endearing?
Well, it's boring, tedious, and feels hollow. And although there's some events that check if you know certain spells, it never feels like you're adding anything of value or accomplishing anything of relevance besides breathing in oxygen and exhaling carbon dioxide. Pretty much like regular school life.
But maybe i can get myself to finish it and will have to revise my review...? I had more fun with the predecessor of this title.
I have a mixed review, but it's definitely worth picking up on sale.
I like the new character art. It's quite an improvement over Horse Hall. The characters look more individualized, and more like people. I also prefer the new simplified enchantment options for sale at the magic shop versus the convolution that it was in Horse Hall. The writing is also more legible than in the original (white font on pink.. my poor eyes). The exams are much improved and kind of fun.
It is interesting seeing America through the eyes of the foreign lead, but it's even more baffling since it doesn't feel like the writer has ever been to America. The slang was wrong often from the American characters, and much of the facts about America that were presented were inaccurate, which left me a bit confused.
However, the stories feel shallow. It feels like a lot of work for little pay off. It takes forever to finally end up on most of the romance routes, and you only see your partner every few weeks and then the semester is over. The romance feels very ace, the friendships like acquaintances. It doesn't feel like you get much of a story in the end, for all of the effort with the classes and all. There's SO much potential, it's a great little universe, but the potential isn't seized. I'm left grasping for more - more depth, more exposition, more character. I do like that we see the events happening in Horse Hall from an alternative perspective; I just wish there was more exposition and dialogue like in Horse Hall.
It's definitely not bad. If there was mid category I'd have selected that. My biggest complaint is that it's just super short. I completed the whole thing in like 4 hours. It's a cute game though. I just wish there was more to it
In Horse Hall, I had to use the short haircut and name to pretend I was a boy and be gay.
Now I don't have to pretend. 10/10
