I love this game
it plays a lot like pilotwings 64
be sure to use an xbox controller (not via bluetooth, messes things up)
also you need to fine with using the triggers as rudders (unless you wanne deal with reconfig of the controls. pure pain)
+ achievements wont unlock (for me a least)
still a great mini sim
Loved the VR version but I have had the same issue as other users with the flat one - can't even get it to start as the controls are borked. Just stuck on that first select screen and I'm unable to do anything.
I have Ultrawings VR and Ultrawings Flat. The VR version is cool. The Vive motion controllers work great and I'm able to control the plane well. However; In Ultrawings Flat, I find that I cannot successfully control the plane with the mouse and keyboard, or XBox One controller, and I just become frustrated. I've tried time and time again to play Ultrawings Flat, to no satisfaction. I would delete it from my account, but then i would loose my VR version as well. I recommend the VR version, not the flat version.
this game is pretty awesome you can fly whatever you want but you can fly everything and no restrictions or whatever ...pretty darn good!!!!
Oh wow, the lack of remap and controller support is beyond me. I used to play this game on VR and its okay, but playing this with proper controllers without VR was what I really wanted. I bought it, downloaded it, started it and was godsmacked when finding out I couldnt remap ingame. Well okay so I tried remaping outside of game and was blown away how a game made after the 80s still dont have the support or implementation of this. I could only play this with WASD shift and ctrl. My profession is computer tech and I do web dev, ui/ux and coding in my spare time for the last 19 years and I was still not able to figure out what goes where in this endless folder file archive labyrinth in this game's structure. This might look like a good game and they are working on another one allready and I can surely tell you all I will not buy that after discovering this. I would really advise everyone to not buy into this if you plan on playing with anything else than simple key buttons. I really did like Ultrawings for what I thought it was, now I am just really dissapointed. So I guess this will be a refund because no saitek x52 pro support.
Although I just started a few minutes ago, for its price, it is a good flight simulator. although outdated and mostly disliked, I find it to be a little less fun than the VR version, although it is more challenging.
Literally doesn't work.
The mouse operation only has vertical axis movement. As a result you can't even start the game. You're just left panning up and down staring at the load game screen.
Advertises HOTAS support. DOES NOT HAVE HOTAS SUPPORT
After spending over an hour trying to assign controls to flight hardware and getting nowhere, I gave up. From forums it looks like this has been a complaint for years and they have done little to nothing about it.
Reminds me of N64 Pilot Wings, that's enough already to make me happy
Graphics: Pretty nice, they are reminescent of old flight-sim, especially Pilotwings 64 (which i'm very fond of) so they do their job for me.
Sound: Simple, rudimentary, not very memorable soundtrack. I normally mute the music and listen to my own playlists.
UI: Needs A LOT of work. I understand this game was intended for VR, but this is the FLAT version. There are a lot of config options that are scattered around you so the layout is a cumbersome mess to navigate.
Gameplay: Fun little game but gets a little bit repetitive, as many missions are reminescent of old flight-sim challenges, it's just not enough for current industry standards.
The biggest problem and stone that weighs this game to the ground is the godawful controller support. I tried playing with an Xbox One controller without issues, but when i tried to use a flight-stick (which works perfectly with other flight-sims like FSX, HAWX, etc) it simply refused to recognize it's axis and map it's buttons as intended, i tried using the game's own remapping system without success.
I searched on Google about this issue and found a nonchalant 2019 dev's blog post about remapping controllers axis and buttons by editing the game's text config files... which was an instant turn-off for me. The saddest part is that it seems this is a pretty old issue devs never took the time to solve.
I am very sorry to NOT recommend this game, but i think that the best way to enjoy a flight-sim is with a FLIGHT-STICK and until devs fix that issue there will always be a better, more polished flight-sim out there (and if you need, you can always enjoy the good old days replaying the classic sims/games this one is based upon, with proper joystick support of course).
Why doesn't it play nice with flight hardware?
It's pretty good. Came with my VR Ultrawings which should be named to Vomitwings.
The non VR is very good and where I'm dumping a lot of time into. It's such a relaxing experience and the challenges are not too hard. I definitely recommend for a relaxing time.
Plays great! Runs well even on potato hardware (Surface Pro 2 runs game @ 1024x768 on fastest very nicely!)
incredibly tedious perfect line simulation with two broken 100% achievements
your probably thinking, wow could it be.... a modern version of pilotwings 64 on steam?
In essence, on the face of it that is also what I imagined ultrawings flat to be. My review is based upon using mouse & keyboard with simulation controls. You initially start off qualifying for the ultralight licence and begin to unlock various flight missions & landing locations. In total there are 161 missions based around 4 islands & 8 landing locations, scattered between the 4 available aircraft.
Firstly like alot of unity games, Ultrawings doesn't have a working v sync option, so unless you want to cook your gpu you have to add a windows mode exclusive via the launch option. On top of setting max refresh rate and applying adaptive sync via your gpu control panel. Secondly, mouse look is purely free look without a centre to cockpit view button (ironically this option is present using a controller so don't touch the mouse if you don't have to) & lastly ultrawings flat was broken on release.... more on that later!
During the 1st two landing locations around wayward island (excluding the 7.5k gee racer course) overall I found the game to be rather enjoyable. Until you reach mt thompson's 2nd landing location. Essentially that is where ultrawings gains it's sadistically tedious nature of being a ruthless perfect line/perfect score simulation. If your not following the perfect line, you will miss alot of the score markers, instantly be crashed into or run out of time..... Yes folks it is that unbelievably infuriating! To repeat the same course for hours on end just because you made a tiny margin of error.
your levels of frustration will exceed to all new heights once you start playing the gee racer 7.5k courses. Start the race too early, nope crash! follow a line too long, nope crash! Get into 1st before your suppose to, nope crash! All this and more awaits you in the skies of ultrawings!
As you can see from my play time, I have spent 50 hours playing through the game and have reached 97% completion with 151 gold collected thus far out of the total of 161 available. So with only afew courses to finish, that's where i begin to discover some conveniently placed broken courses that block you from finishing it. So a work around of sorts is to find a working build, unfortunately from the release build in april 30th to the current version on steam, none of these have a potential fix available to them. If the elusive developer does decide to balance & fix afew teething issues, then it can be quite enjoyable. Does seem like a cash grab though, given that the VR version was released 2 years ago. But the icing on the cake, is getting to the dlc island only for one course to completely break your progression.
Pilotwings series is one of my favorite games, I loved the 64 and 3DS versions, and Ultrawings is the next step. It's beautiful, controls like a charm (I'm using an Xbox One controller) and has enough variety. I recomend it to all who miss Pilotwings games.
I love this game. I also loved Pilotwings 64. This has kept all the best bits of that game and added much, much more.
The planes and islands look lovely. Plenty of detail to catch the eye when soaring around them - dams, lighthouses, churches, monuments, bridges, etc.
The missions are great. Take off, fly through hoops, race, pop balloons, take photos, and land. With points and cash awarded on how fast or accurately you complete them. More cash unlocks more planes and islands. I also like the game hub where you have to fly to each island and land there to take on the missions of that island. Again back to the N64 - Diddy Kong Racing did a similar thing.
I thoroughly recommend this game.
However!
The controls are currently a mess, though the dev is quick to respond through the discussions board.
I use an Xbox 360 controller and have had to manually re-code and mod the game to make the controls work properly. Other people seem to be struggling too with various controllers.
The other downside, I have to be careful here as I write video game soundtracks for a living! The music is awful! Clearly bought off the peg. Doesn't fit the game at all and a game like Pilotwings 64 had a great soundtrack. Luckily there is a volume control! I'll probably write my own soundtrack and mod that too!
That said, this is a beautiful game and I simply love it though it is not perfect which is such a shame as it does so many things well.
Pros:
-Extremely accessible flight mechanics for a video game. They have a great balance between the realistic and the cartoonish.
-The game progresses appropriately, with a reasonable amount of challenge without becoming too frustrating at any particular point.
-The ground design provides great opportunities for interesting visuals in flight (it's even better in VR!).
-It's priced well for the amount of potential play available.
-Even aside form the actual missions, the game is a lot of fun to fly.
Cons:
-Hilariously incompetent user interface design. On what planet do Q and E make sense for rudder? NO MAPPABLE CONTROLS! Only certain specific joysticks supported. This is a carryover from the VR - if your Vive thumbpad breaks you have NO RUDDER CONTROLS, which makes some missions impossible, stopping your progress through the game.
-The visuals can be a little weird sometimes, depending on your display.
Conclusion:
This game has tons of potential, but until they have a coming-to-religion moment on their control design I will not recommend it to others.
It is not possible even to choose a save slot to start the game!!!
Mouse horizontal movements are disabled in the game for me!
I am running also X56 (running superfine in all other avia games)... and that is not working here as well!
Horrible.
Not usable.
Refund ASAP.
