16th mission in, flak damaged my b17, missed the target, get attacked by what seems to be the entire luftwaffle, tail gunner gets shot and dies, barely makes it home, get diagnosed with ptsd, 10/10, would do again
Is it just me or are those first 4 screenshots on the store page showing a different game? Either way in this game you get to command a B-17 over Europe. You have some minimal crew management like telling one guy to go somewhere else, telling them to put out fires or help their wounded friends. You can take manual control of essentially everything in the plane or you can sit back and watch as the AI does its thing. It is a very old game so the controls kinda suck. Like you have to press the tilde key, the one below ESC, you gotta press that to shoot. The first time I tried that it didn't work. Then I pressed either right control or right alt which made the turret turn slower but now I could fire then I pressed one of those two buttons again and the turret started turning faster again and I could still fire. I pressed one of those two again to make the turret turn slower so I could aim better and nothing happened. The keys are a bit janky. Fortunately unlike most of these older games you can easily access the settings menu and change both graphic settings and your keybinds very easily.
+Even though its an old game it still looks very nice.
+The AI isn't bad at doing its job and you can take over manual control to have some fun yourself. (Don't do this for the pilots seat, on the ground the AI did nothing but on the AI when I took control from it all my engines suddenly went to 0% power so be careful.)
+I really like the sound effects.
+Its a very old game but its more modern then some of the much older stuff. You can easily access the settings menus and change your graphic settings or your keybindings easily.
+I really like how the fighter escorts and enemy interceptors look. You can see P-51s, P-38s especially the German fighters look great. You can even find some 262s which is very fun to see.
-Because its an old game it is still hard to get into. The controls are messy at first, not a lot of things are clear and even the training missions just put you in a safe environment and let you do whatever training you're supposed to do they don't actually say "now press this button, now do this" they just assume you know the buttons already.
Compared to a lot of the older games I played this one is definitely easier to get into and its very fun when you get things working. They are making an updated version so you might wanna wait for that one.
I remember finding this game as a child in the attic of my house. I played it on a laptop back then but had no idea what to do (English wasn't even my first language). So I resorted to just shooting the other B 17s as a gunner for fun lol.
A few years later, I started to understand it and let me tell you, it's a great game. It's not only a very deep simulation, it's also really fun and addictive. You can play as a squadron commander and manage your aircraft and plan your bombing missions, or you can focus on being the commander of one bomber. You can play historical missions and scenarios and you can even play as the Little Friends (escorting fighters) or enemy Luftwaffe pilots!
The great thing about this game is that you can play it however you want, focusing on the aspects of gameplay that you find more appealing.
Playing it on modern systems isn't hard, there is a simple guide on steam to follow. It's important to rebind the keys as the original keybinds are a bit awkward. Also, it is essential to have a joystick to experience this game to the fullest.
What a fantastic game/simulation. It can be as simple or as complex as you want it to be. Want to be the pilot with all the controls and gauges at your disposal? Go for it. Or if you just want to shoot German planes out of the sky, you can do that too. Maybe the bombardier? dropping those lethal payloads. The plane will run itself unless you decide to jump into any of the positions. There's a solo campaign and also a campaign where you can also run a squadron . The graphics are top notch too, although being 22 years old you won't get fullscreen or really high resolutions. Hard to believe this game is 22 years old. Runs like a dream on my pc with Windows 10 and picked up my joystick no problem. I think this game needs to be remade with today technology.. 'Bandits high at 7 o'clock!!' 10/10.
flew a mission to some factory in berlin, got intercepted by 4 109 squads with no escort by my side, sat through 20 minutes of non stop flak, came back home with 2 engines dead and 7 crew (pilot included) wounded
10/10 would feather the wrong prop and accidentally shut off engine 3 again
The graphics may be aged and dated but this is one that stands the test of time for being great. I bought the original when it came out on floppys and I bought this one too, I just need to get back into it again, after all, I still have the original manual and keyboard command sheet.
While I dislike this game I'm giving it a thumbs up since it's great.
It's horribly outdated, has terrible controls, painful UI, and tough learning curve - because of what I just mentioned.
Still it's the only game in it's genre, and it's the best at it if you've got patience.
This game needs a modern remake. Preferrably VR.
For a game that's only 6 months younger than me, this is a remarkable specimen.
Cons:
- Graphics aren't great. It's 20 years old for crying out loud, don't expect it to work in 4k
- Controls are less than intuitive admittedly. Many obscure buttons, so keep a copy of the manual open nearby at all times. Defensive turrets and fighter planes use keys instead of mouse to aim (have not tried joystick, so can't say), so just leave the gunnery to the AI
- Difficult to master for sure, and you will not succeed on your first time.
Pros:
- Difficult to master for sure, and you will not succeed on your first time. Not a mistake I put this twice, as this is one of the defining features of this game. There is a difficulty setting to help, but there is absolutely no way to guarantee you succeed. Then again, the boys flying these in 1942-1945 had no way of guaranteeing success either!
- So many features for a game of its age. Ten different positions to man, each with its own role and playstyle, not to mention the fighter pilots. Detailed planning for missions, from routes and elevation to the target type and bomb load. Fleshed out crew features with unique portraits, names, and personal details about your airmen. Most games today don't feature these!
- As accurate a depiction of the air war over Europe as anything out there. Does it look amazing? No. But what other game actually makes you dread Luftwaffe attacks and flak concentrations? What other game lets you operate a Norden bombsight, navigator sight, and fly a B-17 with almost exact mechanics to the originals? What other game lets you learn so much about your individual crewmembers, to the point you are genuinely upset when one doesn't make it back alive?
i like the perfect mix comic sans and blowing up civilian structures and residencies.
this game is also based because it only counts time in the launcher
A lot of people seem to misunderstand this game. It does work, but requires some fidgeting. The game is old so you can't play full screen, EVER. You can get things up to 1440x1080 (What I play on) which works just fine and doesn't hinder the game one bit. Another thing is the border and frame (the white line surrounding the screen with B-17 written at the top) you can get rid of this with a little program called; WinExp. Download this, open it up with B 17 running and click on B 17 in the WinExp window and go to style in the little hand-bar. Very left side, make sure WS_DLGFRAME and WS_BORDER IS NOT ticked. This gets rid of the latter. Also, this game takes time to learn, even if you want to play the easiest without any realism, you will be watching tutorials for at least 1 or 2 hours. It is all payed off however, the game is amazing. 110% recommend :-)
Also, I have half an hour in the menu, game doesn't count actual in game time it's weird.
Considering this game is almost 20 years old, it's still the most amazing bomber simulation in existence. I bought this when it first came out, and remember completing a campaign on full simulator mode, and as navigator, you have to look at the map, compare it to the terrain you actually see below you, and plot your course based on that and dead-reconning . . .the feeling of actually getting to the right waypoints on time and getting over the target, then using the Norden bombsight on full realism to actually demolish the target is amazing. The sounds of the bombs exploding below actually seems to rock the plane . . .
If you have any interest in flight sims, the B-17, or the allied bombing campaign over Europe, get this, you will be seriously impressed, despite its age and any graphical shortcomings . . .it will give you a true appreciation for how amazingly hard it was to survive 25 missions IRL. If any company could remake this with a modern game engine, they'd probably make a fortune . . .not sure why it hasn't been done yet . . .
I feel I must leave a positive review despite the fact I cannot get the game to run properly. If the devs/publishers of this game are actually still around. PLEASE, re-make this game, just the way it is but with new updated graphics. There really is nothing else like this game available and I miss this game very much.
Absolutely loved this game back in the day. Unfortunately, there are just too many technical incompatibilities between the program and Windows 10.
- Despite a couple posts indicating support for higher resolutions, I could not make it work, and I'm pretty tech savvy. The best I could do was 1280x960.
- Could not remove the "windowed" frame from the top, cutting off a key area of the game screen which is used to trigger a pull-down panel to switch between crew members. No matter what I did, I couldn't get it to go "borderless" or full screen.
- Despite owning a similar-era Microsoft Force Feedback 2 joystick (you're jealous, I know), I could not get the program to recognize it, nor any other joystick or gamepad.
Perhaps all of these things are Windows 10 problems. Can't be sure. Regardless, it's a unique and fun game if you can make it work. I couldn't, therefore thumbs down.
Bombed a target of opportunity which turned out to be the Nijmegen railway bridge.
Got court martialled when I got home for hindering the war effort.
11/10.... would blunderingly undermine the war effort again
this game to me is still more addicting and fun than a lot of the newly released AAA games on the market, "Not bad for a 16 year-old game eh?" i thought to my self and the best thing about this, is that you don't need a high end PC to play this game, hell even an office computer can run this game very well without any problem.
Also i would like to say that this is the only game that really enforced the player to read the manual. with out reading it i bet you will even struggle to find out how to start the mission let alone to control everything the B-17 has to offer...
this game is a flight sim and crew management all in one although most people remembers this game for it's hardcore realism, the devs still humble enough to give you plenty of options on how difficult your game can be. you can set the difficulty of this game to a certain degree from your 8 year-old son can play this without a sweat to even a huge challange for veterans of this game. this also makes the game not repetitive and boring after for just a few hours playing it and anything can happen at any moment even if you're playing a very same mission with exactly the same objective not all flights are the same.
there are 2 game modes in this game, Historical Campaign and Squadron Campaign. In Squadron you can take control a whole squadron of B17's where you plan your own attacks and set your own waypoints towards your target. to be honest i'm not a huge fan of this game mode because it's rather complicated in my opinion, i think the best is the Historical Campaign where you are in charge of a B-17 in some squadron you pick and you can name your plane and pick your own nose art to even name your crew.
But i have to remind you that this mode i think is the most rewarding as well as punishing because you only mind about your aircraft and crew, when your crew gained a lot of experience from missions you start to relate to the crew and treat them as real humans, as weird as this may sounds you'll realize this when one or even more than one of them are KIA/taken as POW then they will be replaced by newly fresh recruit rangeing from skilled to know absolutely nothing, brave to be even a massive coward so my top tip here is to don't use the skip functions too often some times they may be injured in the worst of times (e.g. when you're on your way back crossing the english channel to even sometimes when the airstrip is on sight.)
i believe that this game is mainly based on skill, patience and luck (mostly luck) because in this game the scariest thing you will ever encounter is not 109's or even 262's no, but it's actually Flugzeugabwehrkanone commonly known as FLAK ,yes. There is no escape, the best thing you can do is sit tight, tighten up your butt-hole and cross your fingers through the entire FLAK event also bombing runs.
anyways i'm rambling in short this game is unique and it stand the test of time better than any game in my opinion and it's unforgiving realisim is what makes this game fun to play but difficult to master. I dare to not count the thousands of hours of playing this game before i created my steam account 2 years ago and even with that thousands of hours experience playing this game i still consider my self a noob.
If you are a massive WWII aviation fan and for those of you who interested in Flight Sim, i highly recommend this game, but remember this game have a steep learning curve so you really need to actually learn on how to play this game.
I expect most people will find this game because they used to own it many years ago and wanted to revisit it. Good news - it still works on modern kit. Mostly.
If you're just uncovering this game, it's a bit of a gem but it's a sim, not an arcade game. Don't expect to pick this up in 5 minutes, and for the first few goes have the manual open on your phone or something. You'll need it! There's good tutorials in it but note the tutorials in the game don't tell you what to do. They're supposed to be played alongside the manual.
The game itself is big enough to support hundreds of hours of play (note the steam counter only tracks time spent in the launcher dialog). Each mission can consume an hour or so of time, making it quite frustrating when you've fought your way to the target and your bombs miss anyway. It's a sim and that happened in real life too!
You can do as much or as little as you like during the missions. Natural instincts are to take over the pilot role (being a flight sim and all), but this is probably one of the harder jobs as you need to manage the engines and the such as well as fly the plane. The co-pilot will assist, but perhaps best left alone until some of the keyboard shortcuts are mastered. I started by just taking over the bomb aiming (go through the tutorials), and a spot of navigation after each time jump. The navigator usually has the plane in slightly the wrong place, so you just have to drag it back once you've worked out where you are.
What is currently stopping me from exploring other bits of the game is I'm struggling to get the joystick working. This effectively prevents me from taking up the gunner and pilot positions. Other reviews suggest it could be some conflict with the mouse, so once I've had my fill of navigating and bombing I may investigate this a bit further.
In summary, if you like getting involved and want the full sim experience, there's a lot to be had from this game. If you just want to fly around and bomb some stuff for 5 minutes at a time, this isn't the game for you I'm afraid.
Great game! Controls are hard but guys if you buy the game, you must either be a die hard 8th AF guy or like realism. But either way i wouldn't trade this game for anything! 10/10
Don't pay attention to my playtime, it only counts time in the launcher
Great game although old.
These sorts of games no longer exist. It resembles Silent Hunter Sub sim with crew managment although if you wish it can also be a hard-core B-17 simulator, down to starting up each individual engine ( the flight physics aren't the most detailed).
One problem is that the controls aren''t the least bit intuitive. Imagine trying to start up a B-17 without even having been into one before.
Bottom line, I highly recomend this game to anyone that loves Silent Hunter, B-17's or flight sim fans as this will provide for hours of fun.
love the game never played it before until now, great to play more of a crew managment game than a actual shooter. can be tricky if you up the realism but well worth the money highly recommend it to anyone
Not so much a simulator as a crew managerment a la Silent Hunter, though crew progression feels shallow beyond skill improvement and medals. I found it difficult to be attached to them when they're in the hospital all the time.
I suggest a quick look at the date released and expect it in graphics.....That being said there are just not many games out here even today that seemed to get all the pieces right as this game has. Tough learning curve with an insane attention to historical detail.
I do not know how I missed this game all of these years.
