Metaloid deserves a play-through if you enjoy platformers and Megaman games. Hope to see another one from the developer.
Metaloid Origin is very reminiscent of MegaMan X. From the game play to upgrading the PC, if you are a fan of MegaMan X or Metroid; this if a game for you. Keep in mind that some of the story has bad english translations. Otherwise it is a decent game that has a nostalgic feel that is fresh and new.
I really enjoyed playing through this one. So far I've only beaten the game with the first character, so I still have two more characters to go.
Solid, fun action platformer with a lot of variety. Hunting for collectibles and power ups was a lot of fun. The final boss was one of the coolest bosses I've seen in these kinds of games.
I've only played through the fire themed character so far, but the ability and weapon variety was very nice. There's only four special abilities and four weapons per character, but each of them were solid and none of them felt more powerful than another - I ended up using all four weapons frequently. There's also a collectible "passive" powerup in each of the first six stages.
The English translation is almost comically bad, but it gets the point across. The story is clearly not the focus of the game.
Overall I would recommend.
Should note that I played it on the Deck & it worked perfectly. But the game only supports 16:9 ratios, so expect black bars on the top and bottom of the screen.
I think this game is underrated (currently 82%). If you check negative reviews, noone said "it's not fun".
It's not a Megaman-like game, and it does not advertise as such. It's a run and gun with more platforming options than your standard Contra. Two negative reviews are actually mixed feelings or mention that the game is "great". One had help from the dev because they missed something, and still left a negative review. One apparently had lag issues, but still played for 4 hours. One complained about hard mode, which, to be fair, I haven't tried, but they spent 13 hours on the game.
The game certainly isn't perfect : sometimes it's unclear what is solid or not, some sound effects feel a bit off. But there's a lot to play with : 3 characters, for which you can look for many upgrades. Level gimmicks everytime, which work well. The pixel art is good, and the music is varied. It's nervous and controls are on point.
Considering the price it's absolutely worth it and even when it was more expensive it was fair :)
NEVER PLAY HARD MODE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you are type that like games that is more challenging or prefer to 100% the game, you will be miserable with this game. I wasted so much time at the final battle for will deal barrage of enemies while dealing with giant boss who can shoot home coming missiles, shoot giant energy orb at your direction, and shoot energy projectiles nearly 360 degrees. The worst part is final boss can do this OFF SCREEN. That right you heard me which I say again it again OFF SCREEN. You may be able to heal but it cost double for each time (start at 40) which I had 10,000 crystals. Sure the enemies can drop healing items but it is rare and you won't be fully healed.
Because of my experience with this game at hard mode I decided to quit even after playing completing 1/3 on normal mode.
In most respects this game is great. Controls are tight, fun upgrade mechanics, and good enemies. Graphics look nice in that retro style, though sometimes it can be hard to tell when something is a platform or just part of the background.
But the level design just kills it for me. Full of cheap pit deaths and sometimes very unclear where you're supposed to go. The game has a very forgiving continue system so you can retry as much as you want, but at some point it just isn't worth the time.
Metaloid Origin is not just a truly great-looking pixel art game, it combines some of the best attributes of handheld and classic platformers. It's richly detailed, with careful attention paid to the animations, effects, and spritework. It has clean controls, smooth performance, with cute and cool characters, a good variety of enemy designs all around, and provides all of this while accomplishing tight platforming and action. More than just "good enough", Metaloid has all the nuances, like the perfect hit stun feeling, the blinking invulnerability, varied enemy patterns, and all those sort of things you don't think about but expect naturally in a platformer in this style. Metaloid looks and plays very similar to an Inti Creates game, which is an outstanding achievement considering it is the work of a tiny independent studio, and from what I can tell, a single graphics artist. This game would have easily been a top shelf product on the Nintendo DS or earlier. Don't go into this expecting a strict Mega Man experience though. Metaloid Origin is doing its own thing to separate itself from the previous entry in the series while exploring new ideas and progression systems.
The premise is neat. At the start you can pick one of three powercable-tailed cybercats, called "Predators", and use their powers to fight against the disguised imperialism of the Lucian Corporation, a foreign superpower pretending to contribute while set on extracting the resources of planet Utopa. It's a cool story that doesn't weigh the game down, as Metaloid Origins is focused on delivering a great action experience first and foremost. Levels are very diverse, with large and open areas, but never too confusing since they all lead towards a single goal. You have to play them in order, but they're carefully designed as a result, reflective of a steady progression of character abilities you acquire, and progressing through the game has you finding a peculiar story-related foe, who upon being defeated, drops an item that unlocks higher levels of origin power giving you access to new and improved skills.
This mechanic leads to the other thematic aspect of Metaloid Origin. Building strength revolves entirely around collecting purple gems, the resource of planet Utopa that the Lucian Corporation craves, an item that functions as both a source of energy and currency for your Predator. These gems support everything from purchasing upgrades to healing, and even restarting from death, performing the role of extra lives besides. These gems are abundant and everywhere, floating in the air, bursting out of major robot enemies, even being found as packaged blocks in a Lucian mining operation. You'll be collecting and spending a ton of them, and you can make the game as convenient as you need it by farming for gems if you need extra healing or weapons to push through certain stages and bosses. Honestly, it's a great story-related way of providing accessibility without hurting the core gameplay loop that makes Metaloid fun.
My only complaints for the game would be that bosses aren't super memorable. They have quirky dialogue and cool designs, but they feel like outspoken versions of stage enemies rather than truly distinguished robot masters, and the English dialogue could use proofreading, but it's nothing that disturbs the overall enjoyment of the experience, and hardly a sin given the size and budget of the development team. Metaloid Origin is genuinely fantastic, a steal for the price, and you'll have a great time if you appreciate quality 2D platformers with gorgeous artwork.
A super solid Mega Man X inspired game. The stages are surprisingly long, but never felt draining, and the boss fights were pretty fun and challenging, but not frustrating. Having 3 different characters with multiple skills gives some nice replayability. A very nice surprise, especially at this price point.
A very mediocre Mega Man clone with levels that drag on a little too long for my liking, even if there's not that many. It would have worked way better as a metroidvania with these long levels seamlessly interconnected. Bosses are not very fun too fight, the sound when the collectible gems are picked up is annoying, collecting the larger ones have a weirdly upset sounding jingle, upgrades with said collectibles are not at all satisfying or rewarding.
I die too many times for my liking due to shoddy level design and enemy placement, instead of a proper lives system the gems are required to continue after every death which means even after clearing a level I miss out on upgrades, the dash feels awkward and gives you too much distance, the CRT filter makes the game lag considerably to where it runs like molasses, the only character design I find appealing is the orange cat, music is fine but repetitive, pixel art is passable.
The Mega Man games on the SNES look, sound and play better than this. Waste of money, this is worth 5 dollars, not the 8 I paid when I bought it on sale last year. They decreased the price for a reason. Just buy Mega Man X legacy collection, or Azure Striker Gunvolt, or even Mighty number 9. You're going to get more out of those purchases. I will try their other game METAGAL to see if it's better. The pixel art and character design looks a bit more promising, plus it's cheaper.
Metaloid: Origin is criminally underrated and an underappreciated hidden gem. It is made by the developers of METAGAL and unlike that one, Metaloid has lots of originality such as its grindy nature that locks upgrades behind some sort of shop system. The level design is also a lot better and less linear since there are many hidden upgrades waiting for to be collected along with hidden boss fight called Aeon which will grant you Origin Level to enhance your abilities even further. There are also many big gems for you to find and they are required for an achievement. However, the game lacks the necessary guide about them but fear not, because I'm working on it!
One glance at Metaloid: Origin will give away the Mega Man vibe it's carrying because it is obviously inspired by Zero and ZX series. Storywise, it's more like X series but whatever. There is dash but sadly, there is no wall slide. However, you can make your character attach to certain terrain on the walls. There are also three characters for you to play as and each of them have their unique abilities and their own playstyles. Its soundtrack is also very good but it's too bad that you can't find it anywhere on the internet. I asked the developer about it and he gave me the artist's SoundCloud account but it wasn't there sadly. Story is mediocre, storytelling and dialogue are very bad thus, it may be a big letdown for some players but let's not forget that Metaloid is not a game to play for its story. Speaking of story, it's not a sequel or prequel for METAGAL, it does its own thing... for now.
To sum up, Metaloid: Origin is a lot better game compared to METAGAL and despite its long levels, it managed to keep me motivated to go through it. It's too bad that it's not well-known. Lead developer is also a very nice guy, we had several conversations with him, he is aware of the game's problems and he is working hard not to repeat them again. I believe they strayed into the right path with this game and I can only hope that they will make better games in the future!
Criminally underrated, especially at $7. Tight controls, tons of unique abilities per character, great level design and good variety in the gameplay. Bosses are brutal but never frustrating or "cheap". Lacks a bit in the story department and the character sprites aren't amazing, but its a solid experience all the way through. Can't comment on the difference between normal and hard mode as I played through only on hard, but I assume not much is different besides damage scaling and some enemy placement. Really hope we see a sequel with publisher support and a bit more polish who can market the game, it deserves the sales.
That said, game could use some more polish. Lots of "Engrish" and a few achievements do not work as intended.
Great game! Silky smooth scrolling, nice gfx and sound. Perfect classic retro platformer experience with power ups, different weapons, bosses, dash etc.. Good scanlines screen fx (old TV-like).
Even my Hori Fighting Stick Mini is supported for a real arcade retro-style feeling!
A real pity it's underrated. Recommended for classic platform players.
The game is fine. I wish there was a neutral recommendation option. I bought it because I saw a lot of reviews that say it is a Megaman X style game, but I don't agree. It's like Megaman X in that it's a side scroller and you dash and shoot, but that's about it. I felt like the story could of been fleshed out and the final boss was completely different from the rest of the game, which sucked. The game didn't feel like it had an identity. Sometimes you are doing little puzzles, sometimes platforming, and then the final boss is like, some sort of bullet hell, but not really kinda of situation. Had some issues with shooting enemies as well if you were too close. The graphic are solid and so are the controls. You can choose from 3 different characters, which is a nice idea(although the game didn't interest me enough to do more than 1 playthrough). Those other characters also help you with the final boss, which is neat.
Pretty decent Megaman-like with some flaws that make it feel a little amatuerish. While the graphics, gameplay, and level design are on-par, the sound-effects are awful, the writing is cringe-worthy, filled with grammatical and spelling errors, and overall lacks any good "juice" that would make your hits feel stronger.
Overall, it's a fun game that does some unique things. Worth it on a sale if you want a decent run and gun platformer with decent challenge towards the end.
Decent megaman-like. I feel like each level is a bit too long. It's okay to have a shorter game. Some quality of life improvements from later megaman games would be much appreciated. The Megaman zx map comes to mind. There are 6 collectibles in each level and it's easy to find you took the wrong route to the collectible, and if you're anything like me, you don't want to back track. I'd recommend this game to anyone who likes megaman x games, or any other run and gun games.
it is a one level demo. i defeated one boss and got to the end of the level. my only option then was to go back the way i came. talk about misleading adverticing. too bad the developer never finished it, because it was a good game otherwise.
Will update when further in but so far it's a really tight Megaman clone, X in particular. 3 to choose from characters with different weapons each, so there's plenty of variety for multiple playthroughs.
So, if you have a particular itch for a Megaman X-like game, this title just might be able to scratch it.
As someone who enjoyed Metagal, a megaman style game by the same devs, I was pleased with this game. Similar in feel to metagal as a magaman style retro action-platformer, it feels more like megaman zero or ZX. Which isn't a bad thing. I swear the devs actually took most of my nitpicks of Metagal, and made vast improvements based on community input. They even had better difficulty balancing and got rid of the annoying forced boss rush. It does have some clipping issues with characters going out of bonds in some areas and still has english issues, but neither of those things really hurt my enjoyment. It's a crying shame that the game doesn't appear to be doing well, because it deserves more attention and I would love to see a sequel or a Metagal game made with the lessons learned here.
Pros:
Great gameplay and visuals from the 90s era, with out cheaping out for 8bit like a lot of retro games.
Almost all of Metagals issues are fixed.
Large and fairly diverse stages.
Good music.
A little more put into the story.
Cons:
Some annoying clipping issues.
Some English errors.
A few upgrades are in really vague places.
Good game if you are looking for something similar to Megaman X.
Levels are big and you have three characters you can play as.
Music is great and it really has that old-school feel to it.
If you are coming from MetaGal; this game feels more polished. I think I only ran into one bug so far and it hasn't happened again. (I played MetaGal recently and it had a lot of bugs.. like going through the floor and getting stuck when going through a door)
I got this on impulse. It popped up and I grabbed it. It's definitely worth the price. If you want a decent platformer and want to relive the Mega Man experience, this is perfect. The controls are great and the levels are fun and challenging. The only real downside is the grammar, it can really distract when you're learning the controls in the beginning. All in all, 7/10.
This is a game I have been waiting for, for quite awhile I might add. The controls are very tight and that allows for all your deaths to be your fault. The difficulty ramps up fast and forces you to get better or get wrecked. The upgrades allow for a good amount of variation and the upgrades allow you to control the level of difficulty some. There is a good amount of achievements to unlock and multiple characters are there so replay-ability is decent. So far I've played with one character, but even so there is so much variation and exploring is encouraged with abilities and other goodies hidden throughout each level. The boss characters have decent characterization and when their health is low you can see their desperation through their attack patterns changing. This has taken what I've seen in the demo and improved what was already fun and really expanded upon it. I can totally recommend this game, especially at this price. It is a great bang for your buck game which if you want to play through it, shouldn't be too long, but if you want it, it offers a lot to do.
I've only played an hour so far but i can already see how this game is definitely very good.
Controls are spot on, the art design is great and the level design is interesting enough, incorporating a lot of verticality along with the usual horizontal scrolling.
If you're a fan of Mega Man or similar games, you're definitely gonna like it!
