Space Invaders inspired action.
It's fun, Its just a different take on the old classic formula, but it still works for a reason. Its Awesome! It plays very smooth and once you get fully upgraded you can really light em up, pew pew! I dig the crt effect, it really gives it those retro vibes with the warm glow of crt that makes you just wanna huddle around it with a pocket full of quarters.
*You cannot hold down the button to shoot
*You cannot move up and down
*From what I saw, the primary weapon basically never changes.
*If you turn off the game you lose all progress.
I understand that "feel" you are going for but some people like accessibility options
"Zeroptian Invasion" (2018) is a neat little game which is obviously inspired by the classic shoot 'em up arcade game "Space Invaders" (1978).
It isn't simply copying that game though. It features unique sprites, unique mechanics which change depending on what level you are on and unique bosses. And most importantly: This game has really good music. I haven't heard a single soundtrack in this game which I disliked.
You always start a run with 2 lives, but you can get bonus-lives during your runs. One important thing to note is that you won't start the game over entirely if you game over, instead you will start over at the beginning of the section you died in. Each section of this game is divided into 3 levels + an "R" Stage at the beginning of each section except for the first one with one boss at the end of each section. You know that you have beaten a section after you have unlocked a new colour.
If I didn't miscount there are around 19 or 20 levels + the 5 "R" stages. "R" levels are really short levels where rows of enemies come flying at you in certain patterns, you don't need to destroy them though. Merely dodging them is enough to beat one of these stages. 4 rows of those enemies are usually all these stages have to offer.
While you play you will occasionally encounter power-ups. These can be recognised as the slowly moving blinking portals which slide across the screen from left to right or vice versa. They are always at the top of the screen so you need to aim your shot well since you need to take the travel-time of your projectile into consideration. There are three power-ups which you can get from shooting these portals. "P", "S" and "->".
"P" probably stands for "Power" so therefore it allows you to shoot 2 projectiles instead of one. Your rate of fire does not depend on a set time by the way. It rather depends on how many projectiles are on screen at the same time. Without the power-up there can only be one of your projectiles on the screen until you can shoot another one. With the power-up you can have two of them on the screen.
"S" probably stands for "Shield". If you collect this item you will get a temporary shield which persists until you get hit by an enemy. It basically counts as a free hit.
"->" lets you move your ship around way faster. It is really useful if you have to dodge a lot of enemy bullets.
Mind that you will lose all these power-ups not only when you game over, but also when you lose a life in general. Power-ups appear relatively frequently though so you don't have to fight enemies without them for too long unless you miss the Item-portals multiple times.
Just like in the style of the old games you can get a hi-score which you can save under a three-letter combination if you win the game.
I believe that the game is replayable as it encourages you to play it again to achieve a better score than before. You can even get a steam achievement if you acquire a certain score.
I do recommend the game because it's price is low and the quality is high. Beating all of the levels doesn't take too long (Roughly 45 minutes if you die a few times), but the game offers a high replayability as I already mentioned.
System & Setup:
Windows 10 64bit
Intel Core i9 10900K
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER
...Which might be a tiny bit overkill for this game. It can likely be run off of a potato with little difficulty.
Review:
It's a nice little homage to retro arcade shmups. I paid only $3.15 for it, so it's hard to really knock it. The CRT effect and the bezel art is nice. There is a nice variety of enemies and bosses to fight.
Anybody buying this should know that it's not a particularly hard game to finish for anybody used to playing shoot 'em ups. I only played for less than half an hour and I've cleared the game with all of the achievements (except the one for dying, go figure).
I had this game on my radar for some time, but was reluctant to push the button as I am quite particular about this genre (being in the age group where most of my life was spent at the local arcade). My mind was put at ease within a few minutes of playing as the look and feel of the game is fantastic. I will provide a detailed update after I get a chance to put in some hours, but I just wanted to thank the developer for putting a big smile on my face and capturing the genre so well.
Playing and reviewing Zeroptian Invasion which is essentially a version of Space Invaders & Galaxions is pretty much a labour of love for me as i had a Space Invaders clone published back in 1984.
Now onto the game, graphics are as you would expect but they look good albeit just a single colour but they are of a good size and move very well and are very well designed and wouldn't look out of place in the early 80's.
Sound wise this is my area of expertise as i'm a musician, a really good effort has been made to create a chiptune which isn't as easy as it sounds in today's market but i've got to say it's rather good and it gets better the further you get into the game and the sound effects are also of a high standard too.
Gameplay does follow quite closely to almost any invaders type game so it's shoot the aliens, collect power ups and avoid the enemy bullets and progress to the next level but there is some nice large bosses to deal with as well but it's all pretty straight forward.
Final thing to discuss is the performance of the game, yes i found it totally unplayable after level 4 as the game just runs far too fast but you can get away upto level 4, i had to limit the speed at which the game runs to 36 fps to make it playable. My published game of Space Invaders ran at 24 fps which was ultra smooth.
Usually when retro themed games run far too fast it's usually because some form of emulation is being used so accounts for the timing issue's, not saying anything like this is going on here but it's normally the culprit but after a few workarounds it's very playable and works great.
Graphics 7
Sound 8
Gameplay 8
Overall 7.5 out of 10
Everything is nicely done and enjoy the challenge.
A brilliant little fixed shooter that pays homage to the classics of the late 70s/early 80s. The gameplay is simple, featuring a ship that shoots one bullet at a time, and can collect three different powerups as you fight your way through a number of suprisingly distinct worlds, each with their own enemies and bosses. Each enemy has a distinct look and behavior, requiring specific tactics to defeat. The graphics, likewise, are reminiscent of the games that inspired it, and the CRT filter is the icing on the cake.
Highly recommended
This modern day game will take you back in time, where games were hard and chances scarce. Albeit hard, pretty addictive when you like to destroy aliens for a while, enjoying a good chiptune soundtrack and arcade gameplay.
Great game. It wears it's inspirations on it's sleeve, and does what it says on the tin. I like the gameplay, the difficulty, music, and interesting use of colour. Recommended.
It's like a better version of Galaxa mixed with Vortex Attack and the Came from Verminest.
Online leadeboards would be a great adition to the game but it's currrently alright for the price!!!
Very retro pixelart game reminding me mainly of space invaders. I'm sure there's other but they aren't well known to me. This game is pure nostalgia for a few bucks, has a lovely 8-bit music soundtrack and I stumbled upon this game purely by coincidence. Or well, at least RNG.
See how that went in my Forced Impressions
