Ancient Abyss is a 2D Zelda-like action game where you will explore mysterious and hidden events in a randomly generated maze. As you progress, you’ll gain more power and collect items to help you reach further into the maze. Ancient Abyss features the thrilling battle and perma-death mechanics of the Roguelike genre, as well as the exploration and discovery of 2D Zelda games.

There was great potential here, sadly, it's abandoned. Don't bother buying this unless you don't mind getting an unfinished product, the last Official patch was in 2022.

if you enjoy 2d isometric action adventure games, this is a good one to pick up on a sale. As you will read in the reviews the translations are not great and the story might as well not be in the game at all, however the art style and the combat are entertaining and pleasant which makes it a fun game to play for 20 -30 min every so often.

I wish I could say this is currently a good experience, but so far, the game feels very unfinished, the developers should have waited some time before putting the early access, since I've found several bugs and glitches that were game-breaking for me.

Great game, needs more content. Also the notion of space in this game is not so intuitive, always there is a chance that you can stuck in some bush or wall or something else. There are still bugs in this game, for example It happened to me to stuck in a chest room, because some of the mobs disappeared, he made noise, but he could not harm me, that's why I need to restart the game, I could do nothing with it. Overall game is good, I like the pixel art, mob design, main character design, music is good, it needs more diversity, for example two hands sword and one handed sword have the same effect the difference is color and speed, make it different please. I didn't like that you need boots for passing long empty distances, make it a special skill or something, The gloves are not precise, it's hard to predict where will you arrive using them. But game is beautiful and is full of potential.

This is an okay game I guess. I suppose I can recommend it, even though this game suffers from the same sorts of problems as any other Zelda-Like that's integrated a randomly generated world. I DO support Indie Developed games. And I see true professional work being done here that should be rewarded, and I do think eyes should be on the game AND the Developers. For the Developers, think of this as a resume to show off.

Although I feel these Developers deserve exposure for what they can do, I also feel that Video Game Developers ARE NOT infallible. They just want to make something cool. And sometimes developers come up with a series of cool sounding ideas that hasn't been done at all (at the time of development, but that A FEW have done by the time the game launches). Sometimes it's hard to see how some gaming mechanics in a game can ruin the experience. Typically, in a design you want there to be formality to the design, some complimentary things to keep unity in the design. But you'll want people to really look at it, so you'll put in some contrast.... and how do you put any of those ideas into a Zelda-Like that's randomly generated?

This game is worth a shot because I've seen other games have tried to design their game the same way. You know, with a randomly generated world, in a Zelda-Like. Ancient Abyss is the closest I've seen these fundamentally flawed game designs be put together to work.... This game is the CLOSEST to working, with these design concepts... but it's still a whole planet away FROM actually working.

Here's why a randomly generated world sounds appealing in a Zelda-Like: We all enjoy Zelda-Likes. Let's play a Zelda-Like that's different EVERY TIME YOU PLAY IT. It'll never get stale because the world will change every time you play it.

BUT IN REALITY, a randomly generated world in a Zelda-Like is IN FACT an oxymoron. The whole reason why the first Zelda was made in that way was to encourage exploration in a well crafted world, that's been methodically thought through, full of things to see, unlock, and hidden secrets in the cracks of the world, and hidden bits of story telling. These are the things that we love Zelda-Likes for.

... Randomely generating that world removes all curiosity about the universe because RANDOM also mean NOT THOUGHT OUT. As in... no one carefully crafted everything you'd find in the game. Maybe you'd find some ancient weapon, accidentally awaken an ancient evil... etc... If all of that is forced to be randomly generated, then it will never compare to the narrative that was hand crafted. And ironically we have an example of both. Hyperlight Drifter, was hand crafted. Ancient Abyss was made to randomly generate what you interact with. And ironically -- they both look VERY similar.

So why would I be amazed by this world, like I was with Hyperlight Drifter? These two games look very similar. Hyperlight drifter didn't really have an open world (Like Zelda)... So it failed in that sense. But it was still an EXTREMELY well thought out world. It wad a great story, told... interestingly. GREAT soundtrack. great stuff, really. Hyperlight drifter wasn't without it's flaws but that game is up there with the greats... EVERY BIT as great AS Zelda.

But Ancient Abyss, it was fun enough game play... The combat is fine... The movement is fine. The Visuals are GREAT. Actually the visuals are AMAZING. BUT it's a world you don't give a crap about, because it's not thought out... it's just RANDOM, and thus the sense of discovery and curiosity is robbed from the player. These are necessities for the player to have in a Zelda-like.. And it has more style over Substance that gets you to think of Hyperlight Drifter, and NOT Ancient Abyss. Why is that? Because Hyperlight Drifter told a compelling story, with similar visuals, a FAR SUPERIOR soundtrack, And a well thought out world.

Yeah. It sounds appealing to randomly generate your game, I won't lie. But, as the player, you can't really find secrets, because by definition finding a secret requires that a developer intentionally make things harder to find. How does a randomly generated world plant secrets? How would an algorithm know how to plant them at a time and place that would be compelling? How does it plant in subtle bits of immersion, tinny bits of visual story telling?

Like a movie, you have to think about pacing. In a video game, that pacing is the game play loop. How well can your randomly generated world play the game play loop? Would you really want that set to random? Because that's sort of like banging your fists against the piano and calling it "music". Isn't it?

Zelda-Likes are known for their puzzles. And what is a puzzle, if not a developer deliberately thinking of a crap load of difficulties for the player to face when getting from Point A to Point B? And this process is so well thought out that none of the puzzles become stale.

This game just randomly generates the world. There's no depth to it. What you see is what you get. A boss might prevent you from going from Point A to Point B, but that's the only way that a randomly generated world can create any difficulty in getting from place to place. It's the same thing every time.

You'll find these towers that give you power ups. And.... they out stay their welcome fairly quickly. These are the things that should be secrets sewn deep within the world of this game. The things you have to work to find and obtain, discovering more and more about the Lore in that world, as you find them.... but no... They're all really straight forward and bland. VISUALLY, these towers that give you perks and such, they look cool. But... But this is an example of style over substance.

Which is unfortunate, because if this game had a well thought out world, story, and soundtrack, it could have beaten Hyperlight Drifter. But as it stands, Hyperlight Drifter is still the superior game. And Ancient Abyss will always be the game that fell short of Hyperlight Drifter, even though they have nothing to do with each other. And why is this?

Because Ancient Abyss CHOSE to LOOK nearly exactly like Hyperlight Drifter. Which is fine. I'm okay with this visually similar world. BUT IF YOU DO THAT, you need to make sure that you far exceed the predecessor.

Ancient Abyss falls short. And like I said at the beginning of the review, although this game is the closest to working, with the oxymoronic design choices they went with, it still just means that they're just a whole world away from making a compelling game.

It's not that these design concepts need to be honed. They need to be thrown into the trash. And the game needs to be developed like a proper Zelda-like.

I'd play a sequel to this... if things weren't randomly generated, you get a better composer, and you have a better story.

I would recommend a game despite abysmal translation if the core mechanics were good.. but the combat feels clunky and the mechanics feel uninspired. I love a good challenge in a roguelike where I have to beat my head against the wall to get further than the last run or finally defeat a boss, but the combat needs to make that process feel rewarding.. so far this game doesn't provide that. I know it's early in it's development, but outside of major overhauls to the core gameplay, I couldn't imagine this being a standout amongst so many great roguelikes coming out nowadays.

This roguelike is off to a GREAT start. I look forward to updates on it! It has quickly become one of my favorites. Essentially think of Hyperlight Drifter and Dead Cells having a wee baby.

Pros;
*PixelArt is a top tier quality and very smooth so far
*Fun and Challenging at all times
*Some nice Mystery to start
*Punishing and Rewarding at the same time
*Can easily spend hours playing
*Theres a nice balance of skill and pure luck

Cons;
*A lot of missing SFX
*Fist Weapons don't seem to have any good use besides coolness and lack skills upgrades
*There are some weapon effects that aren't written correctly or simply don't function at all

Good game, needs alot of fixing. I only played for like 0.7 hours but i can see alot of stuff that could make this game amazing. Put my trust in the devs which did do like 2 patch updates till now. ill edit this for the better or the worse in like 3 months. buy it, if you want to support the devs but if you want wait 3 months and come back to this review to see if i reccomend it or not. Hopefully, my edit will be positive.

edit: sadly the devs stopped updating it. gg. sad to see it like this

I don't want to be too hasty because it is still in Early Access so I will come back and edit this review once I have more hours. That said I believe this game has big potential, and this is because of their mechanics. I feel that the music for stages are appropriate and nice. The mechanics can be clunky at times, such as only being able to move left, right, up, and down but once again its in Early Access. I will definitely be here for the long run to see how this game develops and where they lead it.

TL:DR I recommend this game.
It's short and sweet, as I only beat it in an hour and a half. However, what's here shows promise. The combat is relatively simple, having basic weapon attacks and the occasional ability or item thrown into the mix, but it feels as it should. The little knife has very little impact, whereas the greatsword shakes the whole screen when swung.
The translations could certainly use some work, but I was able to get the gist of what the npcs were saying (I've played a fair bit of Gunfire Reborn, and it's waaayyy worse translation-wise). The characters, while flat for now, seem like they have something going for them, with each having a distinct personality, purpose and look. That will have to wait until more updates and better translation in order to come into it's own though.
However, the bosses and enemy variety are lacking, though I suspect that will be fixed in future updates. The enemies are all quite simple and easy to overcome (I only died 3 times counting the tutorial) and the bosses themselves are simply souped up enemies that you'll encounter later. It could certainly use a bit more difficulty, especially for such a short game.
I am a massive fan of the artstyle (though I am a sucker for post-apocalypse sci-fantasy), giving a Hyperlight Drifter vibe but doing it's own thing. All of the designs are unique and appealing (though that is heavily subjective). Enemies could use more variety, but again that will likely be fixed in the future.
Overall, I really did enjoy what little time I had with the game and wish it had more. Right now, it kind of feels like I paid 15 bucks (CAD) for a demo, though I am excited to see what else happens with it.

Not worth the money or time at the moment.

I almost never write reviews for games ,but this game is just so unpolished and generally bad that I feel I have to.

The "upgrades" in this game are way too RNG and some are just insanely overpowered that if you don't get them in your run you might as well reset and start over. The weapons are all clunky and some upgrades say they do this or that when they don't even work at all.

I don't recommend this game. Translations are horrible and combat seems a bit clunky. Wish the dialog box actually fit with the style of the game. This was not what i expected when I purchased the game, I thought that it would be similar to the game Zelda, but apparently thats only accurate style-wise. This is simply a dungeon crawler.

The mechanics alone are what holds this up. ... and even THEN the mechanics are clunky. Dodging feels stiff as a brick, hitboxes seem wibbly wobbly timey-wimey stupid. The translation is pretty God awful.

Pros?. . .
+ graphically nice
+ art style is like a watered down Hyperlight Drifter
+ music?...
+permanent progression is nice to see

Cons:
- stiff controls
- dodging is meh
- nothing is really explained even for a rogue-lite
- maps are a little linear but that's okay I guess
- false advertising for a roguelike that claims it's "Zelda-like"

I sense a bit of hope here for the game, but not much.

Buy it if you're curious, stick around to see if it's a cash grab or not, I don't f'kn care.

So much potential here! A mixture of Hades-Moonlighter-Deadcells-Zelda. It has a nice variety even in the early stages. I would wait a bit for the game to have more localization updates and some other bug tune ups, But this is one to keep on your list!

Personally for me the game felt too slow and clunky there are neat mechanics and cool interactions as well as good art style and atmosphere but I feel as though the player should move a little bit smoother and faster as a whole. Additionally there were a couple bugs where I would die in a cut scene because there was bombs, fire, or poison on the floor effectively ending my run. Also there would be some significant frame drops when there are a lot of particle effects going on the screen even though my build is overkill for the specs that the game requires. However with that being said I do hope that over it's development it becomes a more polished game as it has a lot of potential that it needs to fully fleshed out.

Really neat combination of Zelda and Roguelike mechanics.
Really nice art style.
Some solid boss fights so far.
An interesting array of upgrades.

I really like where this is going.

So far this game feels really good as far as rougelike goes, the multitude of risk and reward is there and makes you want to keep grinding on to the next even after you fail. The combat feels a bit weird, with mouse and keyboard I had a hard time playing because the game mostly uses keyboard aside from aiming thrown objects with the mouse . Even navigating the menus you weren't able to use your mouse to purchase items or close out selections which felt strange and uncomfortable. The music also feels out of place with this game it sounds like it's just one track from an 80's stereo album repeated along the whole way and becomes quite annoying after a while to the point I just had to turn music all the way down. There were some game breaking bugs like my dodge was locked even though I had stamina and no effects on me, there was also one instance where I was in the middle of a run and I went in to a room, the door shut behind me, there's nothing to kill just an old man with a bag of meat, frozen bombs, and a oil barrel telling me that i should grab what's in the bag. If that was a puzzle then it was a sick joke as a puzzle. Some parts of the art style also don't blend well for instance I feel like the fire should have more of a pixelated look to it rather than this weird almost stock fire look there are also some perspective stuff that don't match up that seem out of place. The puzzles are really nice and easy to follow as well.

Overall I give this game a 6/10

Pros:
- Good rougelike mechanics
- Combat styles are fun

Cons:
- The music needs alot of work
- Add some mouse controls
- The fire art looks out of place

Also; remember this is early access, bugs are going to happen no matter what.

"2D Zelda-like action game" there is nothing that even resembles Zelda in the first place
Some times the music plays on full vol even when turned off
Using the "Feet"weapons dash you can become glitched out of border and into walls
Also controlls feel clunky with the bomb throw and stuff
The three boss fights I had so far where just boring
Don't like it at all gonna refund it
