This game is amazingly fun and the art is beautiful. After playing this, I bought the physical board game and my friends and I have been playing it nonstop. So much fun.
Really complicated, but super fun to play. A great way to learn the game is through this digital version's tutorials.
Most replayable game out there. Can't recommend enough!
Great for getting quick and convenient games in. Great for learning new factions in single player. Great for testing out strategies and honing your Root skills. Also may help you realise some rules you have been getting wrong!
love board games in general. doing long distance at the moment and having a way to connect to friends and other. I always wanted to play this boardgame IRL but when I go visit my hometown my time is scarce and I did not want to force my friends to learn a game then play it to see if we like it. Used this version to aclimate my players. Now we can't wait to play it IRL.
ps I have 4 rats and I want the lords of the hundred IN NOW!
Translates the mechanics of the board game beautifully. Good challenges for solo mode and easy-to-follow tutorials.
Phenomenal game with true depth without the clutter some other board games have. Only problem is the quitters in online play. If developers implement an escalating timeout system for frequent quitters, this would be one of my go-to games.
While I enjoy a lot of aspects of this game, I dont enjoy playing two specific factions. That wouldnt be an issue considering there are 8 factions currently with dlc that I own, but the online games that I can find have a draft mechanic that will limit the factions you can choose from. The game currently have 7 insurgent factions and 3 military, and every game has to have atleast one military faction. Out of these factions I enjoy all the 7 insurgent and 1 military(the moles), and I dislike the birds and the cat. For some reason I am always forced to choose from the birds and the cat, partly because I am not lucky and partly because nobody wants to play them either.
The game doesnt have matchmaking. The bots are nice I guess, but I cant understand why cant they just put a little bit effort into letting you choose the factions you like to play, have a button for matchmaking, and put a lobby together with their stupid advanced setup rules where everyone can actually play the faction they want. If I would be at an actual table in real life I could voice that hey, I am not going to play the cats, lets figure something out. In a videogame doing this is really really awkward, leaving a game ruines for the rest of the group, or being stuck playing a game with a faction you do not like. Its really a shame beacuse you would think that if I enjoy 80% of the factions, I would have 80% good time with this game, but instead its like 50% fun 50% cat and birds. I want to have more agency over what I play in this game, and I cannot be the only one.
well designed, and the offline play is good enough but online is practically impossible to have a game where someone doesnt just stop playing part way through or quit two turns in.
It's Root, of course it's recommended. One of my gateway board games. Very recommended to people who wanted to learn root by playing it, In the physical form, we wont know the rules is done correctly or not, but in this digital version, the autosolver would literally only run if we play by the rules (obviously).
Literally root ported to a digital version, I don't encounter any flaws, so yeah really enjoyable.
All my friends are too special and unique in the brain (Lobotimized) to play the game but if you have some smarter friends its a lot of fun.
This game is awesome! To really understand how to win, an understanding of each of the factions in play is necessary. Start with the birds and the cats, and eventually add the woodland alliance and finally the vagabond. Once the vagabond is added, old cards have new added effects. This game has a lot of replay ability. Although the ai isn’t great, the cards change the game so a victory isn’t guaranteed. An individual game is pretty short with ai. I didn’t test human opponents.
Great game but you should definetely get the Riverfolk DLC to play the game to the fullest. For every DLC you have the game gets Significantly better!
Best modern board game in the best digital adaptation of a board game ever, what else do you need?
Devs are really slow in implementing expansion content, and there are still plenty of things missing like hirelings, 5-6 player support, new factions etc, but I am thankful this exists at all.
One of the best implementations of a board game. Highly recommended.
First of all - I enjoyed the game and had a good time playing it. Probably because I was winning all the time once I figured out how to run rings around the AI.
I can't recommend it before they fix the god-awful AI. It's litterally unable to play the game in any meaningful way - especially as anything but the cats.
The Eagles constantly doesn't use it's eagle cards for building nests, but on other stuff. And then uses the coloured cards for building where it can't, going into turmoil. It uses two coloured cards in a turn, when it doesn't have to - going into turmoil.
As the Woodland Alliance all you need to do is stay close to the eagles, they'll use so many cards on moving that you'll win in short order.
The Eagles also constantly leave their nests undefended, while moving massive forces into areas it can't do a thing in. Before going into turmoil.
The Eagles basically only have a chance IF they start as the vulture - with the build in all places option.
Just sad to see that the devs haven't done anytthing to fix this.
The vagabond dicks around, trading cards for stuff - just to have to immediately discard the stuff it got, because it's used the bag to trade for whatever and doesn't have any space.
It uses it's crossbow to kill single units in areas with no buildings. Earning no points. And never uses it's special ability to repair three things as the fox. BUT if it has any hammers and damaged equipment, it'll stick around in an empty clearing fixing one item each turn and NOTHING else (unless there happens to be a quest there).
The Woodland Alliance almost always spends it's first points getting sympathy in a three unit province, costing more and saving nothing for a possible rebellion next turn. It dicks arouns for turns after turn, getting nowhere (unless it happens to be next to the eagles, in which case it usually gets a lot of points from the moving back and forth).
Once it has a base, it spends all it's card getting generals and stacking several units in one clearing (usually because a neighbouring clearing has a lot of units, but the WA shouldn't care about that stuff, it wins points on spreading sympathy, not turtling).
The cats basically work as a turtle that want to craft a lot of points, which isn't all that bad, but it's too easy to outplay them once you know this.
They only send one or two units on attack missions, because they want to turtle. Instead of the three units that would give them the most punch. And they first aid every single dead unit, instead of saving cards for big important losses.
They love wasting cards on making more wood, when they have no use for it. Especially throwing out cards like destroy all or ambush on this stuff.
And when they move, they just move one unit here and unit there (making sympathy for the WA). The cats should focus on establishing a strong defensive line across like three provinces, but the AI doesn't know this and just go willy-nilly, making doomstacks here and there that do nothing.
Amd none of the AI beeline for the destroy all clearings of one colour, once they have them. Spending the cards on dicking around.
This is on all difficulties mind you. And all the scenarios. I haven't bought the dlc's because I can't support a game where the game part doesn't really work. It's beautiful though - and I've only come across a few bugs, mainly to do with the rollback feature.
Also don't ask people for their save games to see this stuff. Just play one game and you'll see the jank and horrible AI in action.
Root is an incredible and dynamic asymmetric war game. It is super cute but equally vicious. I learned to play on the physical base game, but the digital game really helps one navigate the intricacies of each faction to master the game.
It's cool, Would recommend playing on Tabletop Simulator or In real life first before playing this!
Good game. Most of the bugs I've been encountering have to do with playing with a controller. I've been having no problem with touchscreen/computer.
the game currently has a game breaking bug that does not let you continue your turn this need to be fixed promptly. The bug happens almost every game when playing with friends the game is very fun but almost unplayable with this issue.
Never did I think that one day, one simple game could set my heart on fire. Like a book you open without knowing its pages, I ventured into this video game world without any expectations, not even knowing its cardboard ancestor. It all began with a turmoil I couldn't control, a confusion I couldn't name. The Eyrees faction, with its obscure mechanisms and ruthless workings, initially repulsed me. A muted hatred had set in, exacerbated by the humiliation of seeing others, more skillful, wield them to defeat me. But as the game went on, like a stubborn sailor facing headwinds, I persevered. Little by little, I tamed these birds of prey, deciphered their mysteries, until they became my own, and then one day, just as a poet finally reaches the perfection of his verse, my decree extended over twelve bird cards, without faltering, without ever falling into turmoil. Was this a stroke of genius or a simple caprice of chance? No matter, because in that suspended moment, I reigned over the air. This game has become a vivid flame within me, a source of both joy and fierce competitiveness. It awakens the worst instincts, teaching me to distrust those I thought were friends, revealing the subtle cruelty of betrayed alliances. A lesson in life, engraved in every part, and without a doubt, the favourite of my heart at the moment.
I'll conclude with these words, borrowed from an exceptional artist: Because sometimes in the life I’m too competitive, you know. - Mbappe.
you are cat. perhaps you are bird. you do not know what the otter is doing. perhaps you will gain a victory point, maybe two.
This is a game that I've tried out 3 or 4 times in the past, and it was so confusing at first that I couldn't make heads or tails of it.
And then...
And then it clicked, on the 5th try. And I clocked in 100+ hours in about 2 weeks. And it's the most wonderful board game I've ever played.
Game is a perfect replica of the board game. If you enjoy the board game, this is perfect for you.
Fun game, online matchmaking is kinda lame as people resign if they are losing or go AFK. The challenges are fun. I hope they add more DLC for the other expansions of the physical game.
Incredibly fun game, with really interesting mechanics! It's a really great option if you haven't got the physical version, or if it's complicated for you to get it, but still want to enjoy the game for the super fun experience it is!
Great adaptation of one of the best board games out there. Highly recommend. Shoutout to the "Woodland Warriors" discord - best place to find people to play with (don't do random matchmade games).
verry fun stragic game with lots of differnt possable outcomes. game is differnt every time!
The actual board game is incredible, but this port is kind of buggy, not unplayably so but we have had to scrap more than a couple games because of desyncing, dropping, or a bug that wouldn't let someone take their turn. But at the same time this version is very charming, cheap, and VERY convenient to play with friends that can't get together to play the game physical, or that want to try the game out without having to spend over 100 dollars to buy everything physically.
Awesome gameplay variativity!
I'd like to discuss the pros and cons of ROOT digital version compared to its board game. I have played both of them.
PROS
1-The digital version includes a relatively complete guide, and you can practice with AI, which is friendly to newbies. This empowers you to quickly grasp the rules, which is important when you're teaching someone who is unfamiliar with the game.
2-In-game calculating does great job, including battles, control of clearings, win conditions, and more.
3-The undo action is more convenient in digital ROOT than in board games, making it especially user-friendly for Eyries. When playing as Eyrie, each move is clearly visible, allowing you to easily rearrange them according to your preferred order.
4-There's no need for setup in digital ROOT, and it costs less money overall.
CONS
1-Some fascinating components are not available in the digital version, such as the landmarks pack and the hirelings initially introduced by the Marauder expansion (sigh), as well as the absence of three vagabonds.
2-There is generally less interaction in the digital version than in the board game. However, playing with voice chat can help compensate for this a little.
3-Occasionally there may be a black screen issue, especially when joining a non-live game or starting with a random faction.
In conclusion, the digital version is a great way to inspire new players to enter the world of Root and allows friends to have fun online, even remotely. I hope you come to love Root and introduce it to your friends for a wonderful playtime.
Great digital adaptation of a great board game! Serves as an excellent tutorial for the board game.
The ai beats my ass on the easiest difficutly.
a faithful, and fun, implementation of the board game.
I like the board game alot. (I have a "Turmoil" tattoo) Its fun to play when Im in the mood for Root and no one is around. Also very helpful that almost everything is automated. I recommend this first before the board game because it helps show you how the factions work. I am eager for an update with The Keepers of Iron and The Lord of the Hundreds. Ive gotten my boyfriend and his friends into it. For the Eyrie! <3
Haven't played the board game yet. This is fun though.
Amazing board game but horribly made PC port. Disconnecting is common and the only way to fix is to exit the game and rejoin, which results in you having to watch all previous turns of the round again as your turn timer ticks down. Also no private games.
After being introduced to Root on tabletop I fell in love, and was very excited to see a Steam option.
I was very disappointed with the Solo experience. Even on the hardest difficulty the AI are laughable with all due respect.
1. Cats let me (birds) just take over and build every where by moving one unit in at a time every single turn, most human opponents would defend territory.
2. Woodland Alliance seemed to occasionally just skip every single turn in had effectively opting itself out of gameplay.
3. While playing against the birds, I witnessed them turmoil 3 turns in a row when each turn there was an option to NOT turmoil that turn.
TLDR: AI doesnt know how to play the game or even fails to function sometimes.
Root itself is an amazing game, with a good soul, great design, and you can tell its made with love, hence my disappointment. I'd recommend picking it up IRL.
4/5 stars. Honestly, I love this game. The Corvid Conspiracy speaks to my soul and has from the moment I saw the box art on the physical game. I just want to be a little magpie that causes mischief and will never tire of being a little chaos bird. :)
The art for this game is great, the factions are interesting, and there are plenty of factions and maps anytime I want a fresh challenge. I would never hesitate to recommend the physical game to people, but there are somethings about the digital version that aren't as good. Obviously owning the digital copy allows me to play by myself. However, I think the tutorials gloss over some of the basic game mechanics (like the times of day) and there doesn't seem to be a handy place to reference the rules. I think I would have been lost for quite some time if a friend hadn't introduced me to the physical version first.
I also find that the digital game occasionally has some glitches. I've gotten stuck on the mountain map a couple of times when the game wouldn't let me select a faction for false orders. The faction was highlighted as clickable, but the game wouldn't register my clicks and anytime I tried to back out, the highlighting remained. I also find that the game code is not as stable/optimized as some other games. I've played Root and Scythe online with friends, and while I like Root much better, Scythe is much less likely to freeze, lag, or disconnect.
I'd like to see some touch ups done to the game, but I would still immediately purchase the Marauder Expansion tomorrow if it came out on Steam.
May the Corvid Conspiracy reign supreme! :D
There are lots of reviews of the digital edition of Root already, so I won't repeat much of what's already been said. But it's an excellent adaptation of the board game. I hope Dire Wolf puts the latest expansion into service at some point. There are a few minor (but sometimes consequential rule changes), but they make sense for a digital or asynchronous version. Highly recommend both this digital and the physical versions of one of my all-time favorite board games.
Help. I was in a fox clearing while the outcast was fox and now I've turned into a lizard.
I bought this game to check out how it felt to play before going for the boardgame.
Honestly pretty decent. The illustrations are just astoundingly beautiful. I wish the 3D modeling of the board and characters were replaced with more illustrations, to be honest, because although they're fine the drawings are just so good it's crazy.
Very goog game. I like to adaptation made from physical to digital. Sad that each extension has to be bought when I already have them physically but ptherwise no complaints.
One of the best digital implementations of a board game I've seen so far. Also it helps that it's a digital implementation of one of the best board games I've seen so far.
very tactical, always new strats to learn, slow but intense and the coommunity is really kind
good game, solid port from tabletop to computer, only complaint is the graphics arent as good as the games art
PROS
- Good gateway into Root, since set-up and rules-checking is automated
- Allows for async play for Root
CONS
- Gets some key rules wrong, so it's not technically "legal" Root
- Missing key features of Root (classic setup, Leder-sponsored Despot Infamy, playtesting new content)
- Slow dev time (it's a complicated game with many rules) for new expansions
- Tabletalk is hard to do (poor chat UI + no mic setting), leading to people needing to find own method of connecting
- Animations are SLOW. I know you can skip battle animations, but undos are unnecessarily long + other people's actions are also long.
In general, do prefer Root inperson or over TTS (Tabletop Simulator, check the mod workshop). However, if you're a beginner and want to "warm up" to Root or learn in a more hands-on way of playing, then get this!
I've bought all the dlc and bought the physical version of this game because of how much i liked this version. It's pretty good
Litterally the best board game I've played. The strategy is complex and different every game.
1. One of the best digital versions of a board game ever. Works very well.
2. The game gets more exciting and strategic the more you play, as if there are entirely new mechanics.
3. Since every character operates very differently, the replayability is much larger than most board games I've played.
4. I CANNOT get the tune out of my head, and I love it. Living in my head rent free right now.
