One of the great RTS games from my past! Works perfectly on modern hardware. It is still a great game.
I like this game a lot. The graphics are good for its time. The game play is one of the best for the Settlers series. It is possible to upgrade the buildings and the military units also. I recommend this game to others especially if they are familiar with this series. The music is also really good. Also I like how there are characters that talk in a unique way.

Well, just not settlers
Not sure what to say really, this is a good game in it's own right, a slow paced RTS ish game, definitely not a settlers style game. So you can get it, but it just is not what the title suggests.
I have sank hundreds of hours into the Settlers 5 both on steam and before that on disc over the years. I've played far too much of it, notwithstanding that, the game is objectively poor. This review will take into consideration both the base game and the expansions. I enjoy the game, but it's not good.
Let's begin with the positives:
The graphical fidelity, particularly for its age, is good. The terrain is interesting and vibrant. The environments and animal models within them are pretty. Although the trailers and product screenshots would have you believe there's a skybox and third person view, this doesn't exist. The screenshots on steam show locations and buildings which don't exist in game
Overall, the game is mechanically simple and easy to learn. While it lacks any meaningful depth, the buildings, tech tree, unit control etc. are very easy to get your head around. Simple enough for a young child to play. This makes it an appealing time waster, and can be quite relaxing.
The music is phenomenal, and frankly is far better than the game deserves.
The Cons
Every mission is rather formulaic, and a variation of gather resources, build settlement, research tech, build army, repeat. This gets stale very very very fast. Especially when you combine this with grindy and arbitrary mission objectives. Some campaign missions can drag out well over an hour to complete objectives. Despite owning this game for about 16 years, I have never completed any of the campaigns. A lot of the bonus maps are badly designed and pretty lazy to be honest. Perhaps if you played multiplayer back in the day you'd have had some fun with it, but that scene has always been nonexistent outside Germany.
The story writing is an absolute non-entity. The opening premise of the base campaign was promising but falls apart largely in part to
COMICALLY bad voice acting, not even ironically bad, just awful.
There are mechanics issues. Unit path finding is chronic, and the different speeds of units mean you end up besieging a settlement in single file.
"No more settlers can come from the village centre there is no more space left" arbitrary.
A lot of the unit variety is redundant, certainly in the expansion, as you can easily obliterate your enemies solely by investing in canons and sharpshooters. The game seems to encourage you to wear down your enemies gradually with raids. But you're not going to do that. You're going to sit tight and build your settlement and units up to the highest level and then steamroll the AI in one fell swoop, since the enemy is scripted it won't adapt to your behaviour or seek you out.
Mines are completely redundant, you quickly realise it is vastly more efficient to max out your population with serfs and harvest everything in site like a greedy mining conglomerate.
"You found a chest, unfortunately it was empty" Really?
Hero abilities are useless for the most part, with the exception of Erec. The only useful hero, who gets killed off in the expansion anyway. You will never use Dario's falcon sight.
There are a sum total of three women in this world - Ari (brooding lover of protagonist), Yuki (comically stereotypical Asian) and Mary De Mortfichet (Morticia Addams with a sword) everyone else, hero, npc, and soldier, worker and serf is a dude. How the world is not in demographic crisis who knows.
It was bad when it came out, it's still bad now. Why pick it up? Well, it's pretty mindless. If you enjoy the RTS format, but don't want to need to engage your brain then this is a good way to kill time and can be quite addictive. But there's far more productive and well made games you could be playing.
Did I mention the voice acting?
One of the best RTS games I've ever played with thrilling story and Hans Zimmer level of music
I like the fantasy world aspect of it all, but of course, let us not forget about the realism the game has as well. Please comment if anyone agrees and has other opinions/thoughts.
Came to relive my childhood, accidentally built an empire.
I love the game and enjoy playing it. Or at least I used to. Now I can't play the game anymore because of the stupid Ubisoft Connect BS. It doesn't want to log me in and when I made a new account it just asked for a CD key. Tried finding it but when I launched the game again it just kept saying it couldn't verify ownership. I have looked online for solutions and found exactly 0 solutions. So I can't play a game that I own. And I'm not the only one with this problem. On top of that it seems to be a problem with Ubisoft games in general since I've also experienced this with Assassin's Creed. So overalll I'd say just never buy a Ubisoft game if you actually want to play the game you buy.
bought the game the first time on ubisoft connect and it didnt work at all kept crashing and so on
then bought it on steam and well i dont have any crashes anymore
i guess steam installs everything while ubisoft client doesnt lol
but besides that i loved this game as a kid and still love it now very very fun
10/10 music also great gameplay
