Formula One without Rules
ah Shinseki Cyberformula Sin Vier... the name rolls off your tongue like a fine wine.
this game is a very very small niche driving game with killer mechanics, fast cars and futuristic technologies and AI. what is not to love with this game?!
it's very basic. and if you have the previous versions (Sin Drei and Sin Drei Plus) i don't think it is really worth picking this version here for the VR and a new track alone. but if you haven't played it?! give it a try. go without fear, you gonna be surprised on the good quality this little gem has.
there isn't much about to this game: you pick a Cyber Formula Machine, and in no time you'll be racing, be either in time trials, in the champioship mode or Online. it's super bare-bones (lacking the flashiness of the character voiceovers and other stuff from the console games of the same franchise), but honestly, i like it. the voiceovers can get annoying after the 5th time you hear them, and the Handling of the console games were a lot hit or miss. this game is to the point. and it's fine by me.
the diferential of this game (aside from being based on Sunrise's superb Anime) is that your machine can transform mid race and that you can use a rocket boost on the straights to go ultra fast. the driving altough not Automobilista 2 or Iracing levels of realistic, is a bit Simulation focused, like a good simcade from the likes of Gran Turismo or Project Cars 2. you will need to brake on corners, you'll need to learn the corners on each circuit, and overall it is a nice refreshing change of pace in my opinion from other arcade racing games, especially in this year of 2024.
the music on this game are renditions of the anime themes, from an instrumental version of Pray (the opening theme of CF-SIN) that plays on the main menu, to other openings and famous songs in the anime, they are all there in instrumental form, and they are quite catchy. the main game theme also plays on the last track of the champioship (tokyo gio circuit), and it is a good theme imo, albeit a bit repetitive.
each machine present on the game is Imaculately modeled. the power of the graphic engine shows here in its full glory, even tho the game is not heavy at all and can run on a variety of system specs. my RTX 4070 for example, barely needed to do any effort at all, with it at times not even using the fans to run this game.
The cockpits are Beautifuly modeled, to coincide with the VR portion of the game, and you can pilot in cockpit view even without using a VR headset. the team deserves all the Kudos on that regard.
however not everything is perfect:
even if you deactivated the cyber system help in the options (which imo is the way to play this game and learn to go fast), in the banked corners the cyber system of the car will want to take control from you, overriding the obvious instincts you may have of taking the corner manually (last corner of Barcelona and the Big corner at Sydney in particular does this a lot). this can lead to your machine slamming into a wall and costing you precious time if you don't adapt to it.
The VR can be a Bit nauseating. but this is true to all kinds of AI games. i did not feel it personally, but others tend to, and i know how bad it feels, because i do feel it in first person shooters.
i miss the smaller teams from the Console games. SGM, K.A.M. Stampede, AGS (my favorite), PPP belladona, Stag, Khoi-nor, Nourish Xi... they are all missing, and their machines to up the grid would be a welcome adition to the game. not to mention we could have earlier machines, like the Stil Series, Exsperion, Al-Zard and others that don't show up. (maybe a classic machine mode for the game?!)
the game also needs more tracks: Campo Grande, Augsburg, Postbridge, San Marino, Shenzen, Katsuragi, Fujioka, and more, are all tracks that we had on the Console and that this game is missing badly.
also, a Career mode wouldn't kill imo. recreating the Grand Prixes from the Anime like we had in the console version would go a long way to make this game more feature rich.
FINAL VEREDICT: 8/10
overal, this is a nice little gem if you didn't play yet. i'd say pick it when it's on sale and you got a change to spare. the price for me is a big salty on my pocket ($99 BRL - 79BRL on sale), but imo it is a nice game that any enthusiast of the anime should take a look on.
