A decent challenge with some nice art. It's on the short side, but the NG+ offering increases the challenge and shows you the complete endings.

Difficult, a little bit slow and requires you to fail over and over until you work out the best way to chip out some progress and make it to that next save point.

Checkpoints refill HP and Ammo and you need to make use of everything to try and make it to the next part.

There's no map and it feels more like a survival horror game.

It seems well-made and a decent product, though I imagine many people will not be into the gameplay (like me). I wasn't feeling patient enough for the trial & error. A map certainly would've made me more invested in it.

Lovely little metroidvania. The pixel art and atmosphere are great. I would've liked a little more to the music, but the ambience works as well. It's a little old-school and difficult and clunky, but it's fine. No map, but, the map is small enough to be memorized without much trouble (and there's a guide with a map as well if you need it). Also, the NG+ is my favorite kind of NG+, with a different path through the world, different enemy placement, and new enemies (kind of like Madhouse in Resident Evil 7, for comparison). Looking forward to this dev's next game for sure.

This is a recommended game, but with the caveat that it will probably be a rather frustrating game until you start figuring out how it wants you to play, and even then sometimes you won't have the right toolset to fully contend with it (it's a rather open game and sometimes you find an upgrade which would have really helped you a bit too late).

It's (barely) a Metroidvania and a sort of survival horror-lite, in that your universal ammo is always refilled at save points, but success depends on cleverly using it. It's almost a puzzle how to go from point A to point B in the "optimal" way, and unfortunately this sometimes will involve taking some moments slowly and having to repeat them should you fail.

That all being said, it feels amazing once you figure out an "optimal" strategy, particularly as you use your entire toolset (there's only one weapon which I'd call nigh useless, and even then maybe it was I who didn't experiment enough). While the game isn't at the very top of clever level design, but most of it has some thought put in. There's a fair amount of unlockable shortcuts to make exploring feel rewarded and to keep the map compact.

There's a NG+ which remixes several things (enemy placements, exact room layouts, which items are where) while keeping the same general level layout, and this actually feels mostly easier thanks to how you accumulate knowledge on the various moving parts.

I picked up Redo!, a game by solo developer Robson Paiva, about a week ago and I love it. The game is available on many platforms, I played on PC. Here's my thoughts.

Graphics. The art in this game is really excellent. The quality of the pixel art is consistent throughout. Subpixel animations (perhaps most famously used for Samus's animations in Super Metroid) add a kind of eerie realism to many of the enemies. The hand-pixelled lighting effects, like the glow of an energy weapon reflecting off of your player character or light streaming in through a giant window, are gorgeous. And the *quantity* of the art is incredible - there's very little repetition or tiling in the backgrounds and environment art, adding to the realism and immersion. I'm a big fan of pixel art and Paiva is just a master here.

Movement. Your character can run around, jump, and roll. None of the movement options have invincibility frames. The roll is probably the most interesting movement option. It's very fast and has almost no cooldown. I was mostly happy with the movement with the one notable exception being the ladders in the game. Jumping onto or off of ladders sometimes felt clumsy, and you can't duck at the top of them or you'll start descending the ladder.

No movement upgrades. There's no movement upgrades in Redo!, so you can debate whether it's a "true" Metroidvania if you want. Access to new map areas is gated by remotely-opened doors, shortcut ladders, and combat ability. I think the game could have benefitted from some movement upgrades, but it's still good without them.

Combat. Combat in Redo! is tactical. Running headlong into fights is punished. You'll need to use your movement options, combat tools, and your brain to win fights efficiently without losing a bunch of health or ammunition in the process. In addition to your basic melee attack, nine different "weapons" (which includes some defensive options) give you combat options. Each enemy has different vulnerabilities and needs to be approached differently. I found the combat to be really engaging and satisfying without being overcomplicated or overreliant on precise parry timings, although I did have to experiment a bit before I got the hang of beating certain enemies and there is some timing involved.

Story and lore. The story and lore of Redo! is fairly minimal and sparse. It does a good job setting the mood of the game. Just don't expect anything particularly elaborate. Frankly I'm glad it's kept minimal. The gameplay and mood get to be the star of the show.

Music. The music of Redo! is very ambient in nature. It's not fast paced or upbeat. It suits the mood of the game and helps keep you calm through the sometimes difficult gameplay. I'm not a big fan of energetic music in games, so I really liked it.

No in-game map. There's no in-game map. However, the game world is relatively small and highly interconnected, and the distinct art in each area can help you stay oriented. I have a poor sense of space and usually struggle if there's no map, but I did fine with Redo!, particularly on my first playthrough. (On subsequent playthroughs I started to want a map more to help me get faster at completing the game.) However, full disclosure, if you absolutely *must* have an in-game map, you should skip Redo!.

Challenge. Redo! is a fairly challenging game with no option for difficulty adjustment. Getting to a save room after successfully retrieving an item or reaching a new area can be tense, and the enemies absolutely will kill you if you aren't prepared or fail to execute. I definitely wouldn't recommend this game to an inexperienced gamer. On the other end, my guess is that it's significantly *less* challenging than Soulslike games typically are, but I haven't really played those games. I can tell you there's no "corpse run" mechanic here.

Length and replayability. I beat the base game in ~6.5 hours. New Game+ introduces new enemies and a new map layout. The areas are mostly the same, but added and removed obstacles and different item placement change the game route significantly. New Game+ took me another few hours to beat the first time. I've *really* enjoyed replaying Redo! and am up to ~19 hours on Steam just beating the game - both the base campaign and New Game+ - repeatedly.

So, I definitely recommend Redo!. Hopefully my thoughts help you understand whether it's a game you'd enjoy too.

Survive & find answers after the end of the world

The world is covered in a mysterious lethal fog while hostile biomechanical amalgamations roam the streets. As the only human left alive, you receive a message from an unknown party to meet them at the solar cathedral and here is where the game begins.

While this is a 2D sidescrolling metroidvania, REDO! can be more of a challenge for some as there's no map with large gaps between checkpoints. It was reminiscent at times of 1st runs through From Software games to give you an idea, especially during the new game+ run for the 2nd ending.

More on the game mechanics, there's plenty of exploration & shortcuts to open along the way. Health/ammo expansions & extra weapons/tools can also be obtained to take on harder enemies. Speaking of enemies, these can range from single fire shots to huge bullets you'll have to dodge. A lot of this isn't too bad to deal with until new game+.

Reflecting back on my playthrough, there's a sense of a struggle to push on attempting to find hope despite overwhelming odds. NPCs that exist aren't human & often remind you humanity is not missed, diary entries catalog the last vestiges of people succumbing to the threats around them & the apocalyptic ruins tell what the world once was.

Granted none of this is wholly original when comparing to other science fiction stories but I'm interested enough in the lore to wishlist the sequel to see what's next.

REDO! is not without faults; the lack of a map has been a turnoff for some, there is a map obstacle that can only be destroyed by a specific weapon which had no indication that it can be used for this purpose & checkpoint backtracking can feel tedious to avoid losing progress. While there are Steam achievements, the store page doesn't show that for some reason. There is also no Steam Cloud save support or Trading Cards which is unfortunate.

I picked up REDO! by recommendation from r/metroidvania while it was on sale & I enjoyed my time with it. It's about a 7-8 hour runtime if you intend to get all the achievements & it ran perfectly on the Steam Deck, check it out if you're interested.
