The graphical style closely resembles but not 100% emulate the ZX spectrum resolution and palette.
Captain MaCaw was returning from a voyage when treacherous weather engulfed his ship.
Scrambling for the life boat, he managed to escape just as the Jolly Roger vanished into the abyss.
Washed aboard a lost island with his life boat in ruin, Captain MaCaw must platform, collect and puzzle
his way round this unfamiliar island.
The creatures on the island are not all out to kill you, but most are so take a helping hand when it is offered
and you may make it off this accursed island yet!

A lovely wee game in the style of Dizzy from back in the good ole 1980s.
This is a nice little nostalgia-inducing game that should appeal to all fans of Speccy type games, especially Dizzy.
However, this has the advantage of: puzzles that make sense (mostly), infinite lives, save points, some nice music and achievements.
The save points are a welcome addition, that make completing the game possible.
Overall - great game that's fun to play for a few hours. I heard there's a sequel, so looking forward to that.
Captain MaCaw is a throwback to the great 8-Bit puzzle adventures such as Codemasters' Dizzy series. Great puzzles and a Piratey story are carried along by a touch of humour and earworm-inducing melodies. The ZX Spectrum palette has even been used to add to the nostalgia. Infinite lives and a save option are available so you're also much more likely to see the ending too. This game is a hidden gem!
Really good ZX Spectrum style adventure game.
A Fantastic game. This feels like a real love letter to the glory days of the ZX Spectrum, if you ever played games like Dizzy or Finders Keepers you will instantly feel at home here.
Great adventure game puzzles, a sizeable map to explore and a cracking soundtrack add up to a wonderful experience that is well worth your time and money.
Great classic style platform adventure, really enjoyed it, much bigger than I was expecting.
The map is well laid out, the puzzles are fair, nothing too cryptic, finished it without a hint.
I love the unlimited lives rule, can relax and concentrate on the puzzles more, and the teleport was a nice touch to save on walking.
Recommended!
This is a smart little game.
I love the old retro style.
You don't see many graphic platform adventures like this these days.
The platforming isn't too challenging but there are a few tricky jumps.
Maybe a little too tricky if you're not a fan of the genre.
The pirate theme is fun and did draw the comment "You are the worst pirate I've ever heard of" from my friend when I kept dying on the spike traps.
At least he has head of me........
This game is a setting mood antidepressant of murky swamp waters cutting your stone bridge head off
Funny short Dizzy clone with planned sequel (which looks like Nodes of Yesod). A must have for any ZX Spectrum fan!
Though my review might sound overly negative, please don't take it that way - I liked Captain MaCaw a lot, and would heartily recommend it to any and all fans of arcade adventures.
That said, Captain MaCaw looks bad. Not because it's trying to channel the 8-bit home computer look, but because a lot of it feels just haphazardly thrown together. Most of the time the art looks like it came straight out of the ZX Spectrum era, but other times it's more like one of those "200 Great Games on one CD" 90s shareware titles with crudely drawn VGA graphics. Most of the in-game text is very poorly kerned, and looks like it's been roughly scaled up in MS Paint, sometimes with antialiasing, sometimes without. Some locations have a CRT filter over them, but most don't. When the screen sin-waves in the underwater areas, the hud frame waves with it.
The music sounds authentically ZX Spectrum-y, with upbeat but forgettable tunes that only get a bit repetitive toward the end. The sound effects are so few and far between they might as well not been there except for the intro sequence, where they are unbelievably loud and obnoxious.
MaCaw plays just like a classic arcade adventure of the past. Walk around, talk to NPCs, pick up inventory items, and use them in the correct location. While you're at it, do some light exploration, platforming and enemy-dodging, though thankfully there isn't much punishment for dying. Solving a puzzle usually either nets more inventory items, or a new player ability. There isn't much story or a real end goal - it's all adventuring for the sake of adventuring.
My biggest issue is just how spread out the puzzle locations are with screens and screens of nothing in between. Occasionally progression opens up shortcuts around the map, including a fast-travel terminal even, alas most of this happens right near the end of the game.
All in all, a solid, if slightly unremarkable arcade adventure. However, with the genre nearly extinct - I'll gladly take it!
Basically, if you like Dizzy, you'll like this.
I you don't know what this is, you are probably younger that me!
Macaw is a platform adventure game clearly based on the spectrum.
That's certainly the look the writer has gone for!
I love it.
The puzzles are fun, the graphics remind me of my old computers and the music is definitely worth a mention.
Best retro game I’ve played in years and I’ve played them all!
As a fan of ZX Spectrum games, I really enjoyed this. The game is similar to Dizzy in puzzles and layout, but dying only takes you back to the current screen.
The puzzle difficulty is just right and the music is great too.
There are a couple of issues.
1. The music seems to be off by default. I had to press a key to turn it on.
2. The ZX style graphics are great, however there are a few items (and the title screen) that are not done in this style and it's really distracting. The main font has a weird anti aliasing effect instead that stops it looking like a Spectrum.
3. I managed to lose 2 items during a playthrough. This may be a bug. I restarted and it didn't re-occur.
Despite the issues above, I've played through this a few times. It's definitely worth the money and even after solving the puzzles, the music and platforming make this a fun second play.
This is a must-play for fans of the Dizzy Series or other ZX Spectrum platformers.
Grew up playing ZX Spectrum games and this is a lovely blast back to that past. Nice selection of find-objects-to-solve-puzzle problems that all make sense. So no need to try every object with every other object (something that plagued some of these type of games).
Would also be a good one to play through with your kid, solving the puzzles together.
Superb little game!
It's a modern day Dizzy!
If you are *ahem*, an older gentleman like myself, you will love this throwback game.
Same price as the tape would have cost 30 or so years ago too!
I just need to get a rubber key add on for my keyboard and I'll be happy!
Captain MaCaw is a retro style platformer that brought back a lot of nostalgia for me. Now, I'm not good at these types of games, because I'm a big giant dumb dumb, but the gameplay and string of events that lead you from point A to point B is incredibly clever and engaging. I was not expecting the game to have as much depth as it does, and whenever I would get stuck on a part, I was able to reach out to the developer who promptly helped with any information I needed.
Very well done, very cleverly made, and overall a lot of fun.
