Despite really wanting to praise the game in its current state I cant recommend it. It does a lot of things right and is a very unique Fatal Frame type horror game but in its current state there are to many bugs that ruin the experience.
TL;DR
If you've played the other two DreadOut games, expect a decent upgrade here. DreadOut 2 maintains the same style as its predecessors, although the developers branched out and added new things like melee combat. I would be interested in a DreadOut 3; I have this message for the dev team (Digital Happiness): I like your franchise. Please polish your game more. Don't take shortcuts. Make sure your UI functions correctly. Add objective markers for story quests (except when you explicitly want the player to search, but give better hints in that situation). Add ambient area SFX (like room noise) and more SFX in general. You have some really good ideas, you just need to put more effort into the execution.
Good
- Game overall feels more polished than the previous two.
- Iris phone + apps is cool, although some went unused.
- The cinematics/cutscenes were nice to see, something the previous games lacked.
- Same great creepy atmosphere from the previous games.
- Funny interactive moments like the toilet tv commercial.
- Actual real time combat! Cool!
- I like the focus on helping ghosts get closure, like Dai the speed racer. I also like the detail after that part where the grave tender will mention him and thank you.
- Sad but clever moments like the child who buried their passed away cat, and you can see the cat with your phone.
- Make coffee for a really picky ghost.
- This game is more story heavy and answers questions about Linda, unlike the first games which were more about the gameplay/horror.
- A few in-world puzzles, which was really cool to see!
- Eerie music
- Cool ending that provides an explanation for why the first games happened (although I am still confused on some details).
- Costume selection! Cool.
- An epilogue that has events from the past! Very cool.
Meh
- Lots of spelling/grammar errors that could be patched if the devs replayed the game and took some notes. Please do.
- Some of Linda's dialogue choices feel silly or emotionless instead of scared or another more appropriate emotion.
- The game can run at 60+ fps, but lowers to like 30 or lower when using the iris phone camera. Caused me some motion sickness, which I don't usually experience.
- You open doors by walking into them. If VSync is off, at least for me, they take forever to open. It breaks the game sometimes. So, keep VSync on. A button press to open doors would be preferred.
- Iris phone camera seems to render two cameras at once. Why? This seems unnecessary and causes a big performance hit.
- Default brightness of 25 was way too low. Had to bump it to 50 because I couldn't see where I was walking.
- Some background NPCs have zero animation. They're like mannequins. They should at least be playing an idle/breathing animation, or they shouldn't be there at all.
- Devs didn't do a good enough job at hiding empty rooms. In the hospital, lots of rooms are just empty squares. Just block the windows, guys XD
- I like the idea behind the enemies you have to be quiet around, but give us a crouch button please. I don't think anybody likes sneaking by barely pushing the thumb stick (I played on gamepad).
- "Papa" (the hospital surgeon ghost) getting stuck on doors. Kind of ruined the horror/immersion of the moment.
-Hospital section where Linda kept stopping to cough after the Papa fight was annoying. Idc if she coughs, but don't make me stop every single time. Make it random and infrequent, that'd be scarier.
- The game would benefit from a sneak/crouch mode. The game will auto-crouch you at cinematic points, but it's not indicated whre this happens. You just discover it.
- You can't phase throug henemies until they finish their death animation. Sometimes this blocks your path when you need to escape or strafe around another incoming enemy.
- Later in the game, Linda gets a special enchanted weapon. Love the idea, but it doesn't seem to kill enemies any faster than a standard knife or axe.
Bad
-Glitchy Ui that doesn't work well with gamepad. Control rebinding straight up doesn't work. Sometimes the pause menu got stuck on screen if I paused and alt-tabbed. You have to unpause, pause, unpause to fix it.
- Similar to (but improved from) the first game, objectives don't give you a lot of direction. "Find the pecel lele vendor" took me way too long. I'm fine with searching, but at least give me a hint, general direction, something to go on! There's a city map in the area, putting the vendor on that map would've made me feel smart for thinking to look at it. But nah, he's not on there. Not even "vendor district" or something.
- Enemy in the final area, the Siska mansion, was awful. It was an all black enemy in a long hallway leading to a room with a cult prayer and a key, kept stun locking me and killing me over and over. It moves fast, so I figured I needed to get distance between us before I attacked. Problem is, it would grab me again immediately after both our recovery animations played. This enemy was a real annoyance. Enemy recovery animations should always be longer than the player's, unless it's a boss fight or something.
- Playing the epilogue overwrote my main game save. I figured that was fine, since the epilogue takes place after the main game and I have chapter select. However, after finishing the epilogue, I noticed the game removed the chapter select option from the "extras" menu at the main menu. That's a real shame, because I wanted to try a different choice in the last level.
game just like the first one is ridiculously hard during combat. the fact that you move to a walking pace when trying to take a picture makes it stupidly difficult. we could have done with normal run movement while holding the camera up. battles are too long. trying to hold down a thumb stick while backing away , eventually my finger slipped off. i don't think i will buy the next one as developer still hasn't learned from the scissor ghost in the last one. can't get pass the girl with the axe. in my second play. as my old save is messed up because i'm stuck on a fence.
This game fu****g sucks a*s through a paper straw.
Look, the first game was "jarring" to say the least. The demo for the first game was very, very solid and creepy. The full game was much worse in comparison, but at the end of the day despite the jankiness i sincerely enjoyed it. It had some really cool ghosts and solid ideas, some not so much, and it treated about a culture we don't get enough of in games.
This game however? I have no idea why it exists to be entirely honest with you. Boy, where do I start...
Looking at the reviews of many other people - combat seems to be the gripe of a lot of people, and rightfully so. The combat (yes, there's actual combat here, for whatever reason) is very simple, like painfully simple. The issue here is that there is no blocking or dodging, so once an entity takes a swing at you - you take it like a good bi**h. Way to make it even more fun is (especially by the end-game) the situations where they spawn a lot of enemies (plus enviromental fu****g hazards) at once, and suddenly you end up in a situation where you have to take 17 hits for free because you walked into a tentacle and are now locked in animation, in that time 3 enemies swarm you, each slapping your cheeks like there's no tomorrow, one of them happens to land a hit on you at the end of the stun animation, so now you collapse on the floor, as you get up another tentacle happens to spawn over your head, now you're grabbed again and so on and on. I'm sure you see how this can be a problem when the game spawns 10 enemies at once along with those stupid tentacles...
Similar situation is the boss fights... Yes, boss fights - and I'm aware the first game had them as well, but they at least tried to get creative, here youre basically playing a budget version of Elden Ring, except you physically can't avoid getting hit, and you have to spam a 3-4 attacks combo until they drop dead. Fun. Say you meet a new boss, it takes you a minute or two to figure out their movement and combos, great now you know exactly how and when to attack, repeat the cycle for 5 minutes until the boss fight is over. But yes, the issue - you can once again just endlessly get stunlocked, because certain bosses can figure out a pattern of attacks that is timed perfectly to land every hit the nanosecond your stun animation ends. I had a fight where I got kicked in the face, got up and instantly got kicked again, just to get up and - you guessed it: get kicked in the face again!
Come to think of it - why does a game like DreadOut need melee combat anyway? What is this trying to be?
Some of the enemies here are pretty cool and creepy, at least on paper, because in the actual game they feel pretty lackluster.
The music is alright, nothing very memorable but I thought it sounded nice. They also used some tracks from the 1st game here which I always liked back in the day. Not for or against the idea, just an observation.
Speaking of audio, for whatever reason the NPC's are mostly mute (not a uncommon tactic) but then sometimes they will speak Indonesian, well - mostly verbally say a word or two for the entire dialogue, but other times they just switch to english, sometimes mid sentence?
In regards to the story - I could not tell you what this is about, it completely flew over my head. The game wasn't very fun OR interesting enough to grab my attention.
Oh, and another issue I had with this game is the "sprint" which lasts (I kid you not) 1 second.
This is a semi-open game with multiple, fairly sizeable locations (I personally think it hurts the game, I see no need or reason to keep this kind of a game so freeroam) and it hurts my soul to run around the town, sometimes not knowing what I'm looking for, going into every alley and every corner, that go for much longer than they should be, to end up being a dead end anyway. This would be a mild annoyance, if it wasn't for the fact the sprint lasts for a literal 1 second xd
To add to this, you will often find yourself running back and forth because you couldn't interact with an object prior to interacting with a different object first, even if it's painfully obvious before you even find out why you may need it. It just feels needless and very easily solveable.
(game spoilers) i absolutely loved the first game and was so excited to play the second one. linda starts off with her classmates not liking her due to her being the only one who survived the field trip. linda then goes on to fight off monsters throughout the game to find out what really happened to her classmates. the first game really gave me good jump scares and the horror atmosphere that makes you wondering whats going to happen next. this one never gave me any jump scares and the atmosphere felt very plastic like. the improved graphics where nice but i think they should of kept the same look of the ghosts and not made them more complex. the simpler they are the creepier vibe they give off in my opinion. i see people complaining about the english translation but i think its very good for what they have to work with. other reviews are saying the doors are hard to push open and sure its frustrating but i dont see the need to keep complaining about it. for me it does not affect how i view the game and it wont effect how i review the game. the main reason i dont recommend dreadout 2 is due to the story line. it never jumps around to much and is easy to understand the problem is to many parts seem to be missing from it. when your in the hospital you go into a room that seems to be shellys dads office. while your waiting for your appointment with him you see shelly behind you watching you from the door and then pass out. besides the first act when you see all your classmates dead in a classroom thats the only time youll ever see another classmate. that was very disappointing to me because usually when your in a sequel game it brings back a lot from the 1st game to explain the story line. you do see mrs.siska once in an act but other than that youll only see her again in the boss fight. thats very disappointing because she is the villain in this game and i would of loved to see more of her. in the end the story line seems to be left hanging you save your town but nothing else happens. im not sure if this is because its a set up for another game or they didnt know how to end it. in the end the graphics and audio are good but there is no story line and just leaves you wondering a lot of things.
Just like the first game, it's kind of a mixed bag. Almost 50/50 ratio of great stuff to abysmal bullshit. I love the story and the atmosphere, but most of the combat and hide-and-seek segments feel like a clunky chore.
A nice game with a little bit of a horror atmosphere, but it's not terrifying to be honest, but the big problem with this game is the doors. You have to push them hard in order for them to open. The developer should fix that because it's annoying.Sometimes the game completely separates you from the terrifying atmosphere from time to time, such as when you wander around the city and do some side things. Personally, I don’t like that. Some ghosts get stuck in doors or walls due to some software errors. Other than that, the story is beautiful and somewhat strange and worth your time. The challenges are not very difficult, but they are... Beautiful and the puzzles also pose some challenge. The game is not at the level of great horror games like Outlast or Silent Hill, but it is She definitely has her own touch
i just love games horror but we can attack the ghost
I love the atmosphere. The graphics are very nice for what they are and there are some very creepy enemies. The combat is very clunky however. That's the only downside I can really think of. You can tell a lot of love was put into this.
best game ever
NJIRR LAH Kenapa kalo game horror nya lokalan takut banget main wkwkwkwk
mommy siska ahihi
Please fix the door issue—seriously! I'm not even sure I can finish the game because the door keeps refusing to open. On top of that, the game mechanics feel really clunky. Everything was going smoothly until Chapter 6, but now the door bugs are constant, and some ghosts won’t stop latching onto you, making it impossible to escape or even use Linda’s phone! This game has a lot of potential, but like many local Indonesian games, it leaves me feeling disappointed—if not extremely so. Honestly, the first game had similar problems. I was lucky to finish it despite all the janky mechanics. But the first one was BAD. This one? It's even worse—REALLY, REALLY BAD.
UPDATE: I actually managed to finish the game. Overall, I still wouldn’t recommend it, but I do appreciate the graphics, the Indonesian ghost folklore, and the cultural elements they tried to incorporate. For that, I’d give it a 7/10. The story feels rushed at the end, and there’s so much potential here. I just wish they’d taken more time to polish it. It could be a great game if they fixed the mechanical issues.
the only thing that was out is my diddy
I don't consider myself a murderer...
But I want to kill the person responsible for making the combat mechanic of this game.
I really, really enjoyed the DreadOut games. This one especially with the new melee combat. Game play was good until I got to one of the endings. I walked around the school aimlessly, my notes wouldn't update after talking to the Senior who kept repeating I hadn't cleaned up, yet I walked over the trash spots with no option to clean them. I believe my game has glitched out, making the ending unable to be completed and I'm extremely frustrated with it now. I've restarted the game, (closed the application) and reloaded my checkpoint multiple times but no to avail. I put 12.5 hours into this run and so for me not to be able to finish it out, or go back a chapter or two to possibly redo my decision REALLY, really sucks. Gameplay was fun, but the idea of restarting it from the beginning in hopes to get to retry this ending sounds extremely evil. That being said, it was fun besides the final chapter bugging out and making it impossible to complete.
Terima kasih manteman DH, keep up the good work!
