This game looked competent but also appeared to have some comically bad things in it like a ridiculous looking protagonist. This thing is like a humanoid platypus with a nondescript furry mammalian head and large comedically stylized eyebrows. It could probably go down in history as the worst looking main character in any video game, but the game itself can be cut some slack because it's an indie game that doesn't appear to be broken in any way. In the under two hours it takes to complete the little adventure you go into levels and collect "sparks" while fighting a couple bosses and essentially making your way to the exit. There really isn't much content here, but the music and atmosphere make it worth it. I really loved this games music, especially during one ice level where this very wholesome indie-guitar tune starts giving off Christmas vibes. The tempo is just a little off but for some reason that makes it more charming.
A little bit of exploration is needed to collect the sparks but it really took me no more than five minutes of searching when I got lost. Nothing in this game is difficult, but nothing is broken either. Except the keyboard controls. They're horrendous, comedically bad in fact. Especially since the dev does some perplexing things like make the ship controls use arrows while the main character controls with WASD. To activate things you press 'Y' and to attack you press 'enter'. I kind of liked that the controls were horrible because it made the game more difficult to figure out, but you probably want to use a controller.
Game is too short and easy to give a strong recommendation but the numerous minigames and the wonderful vibe it gives off makes me give it a positive rating. If this were released by a team of developers I would call it utterly atrocious, but as its own little thing that I paid $5 for I liked it just enough.
Fun, short and easy 3d platformer. Takes under 3 hours to 100%, and definitely worth the price especially on sale. Works great on the steam deck as well.
This game is short. Super short. I've gotten 100% and all achievements in less than 2 hours, and I wasn't even trying to speed run. That said, for the price, it's a decently fun game! Hopefully the team can take this and go further with it.
Really enjoying the game.
Particularly like the graphics and how easy the game is to play.
Nice and cute game, plays like Crash Bandicoot :D
A quick, chill experience.
If you're looking for a lengthy and challenging platformer, this isn't for you, but this game does offer a few hours worth of fun exploration, smooth music, and pleasing visuals. This is something you can really sit down and relax with. It's almost like asmr for 3D platformers. I'm always seeing this game on sale, and recommend picking it up. I ended up enjoying this whole experience way more than I thought I would. I think you will too.
I hate games that advertise split screen support but then forces you to play alone, while providing no menu or in-game explanations of when or how split screen will ever be supported.
ASCENT: Crash Landing transported me to another world full of collectables, goofy characters and crazy bug dudes, all with a nice sprinkle of nostalgia for good measure. The puzzles and challenges were brought to life with an eye-catching world, filled with colour and variety.
Replayability is pretty good two - I found myself heading back to levels I had previously left incomplete (most of the time, I had missed some of the collectable sparks), which provided a nice challenge and a way for to enjoy the scenery once again!
There is a nice amount of variation in the challenges, too, with some classic platformer puzzles and one-off "side missions" such as (spoiler alert) the glider time-trial, amongst others.
All-in-all, ASCENT: Crash Landing is a game full of fun, with just the right dose of challenge. I'm excited for the full release and hopeful of further level additions in the future.
Recommended to me by someone i know, i enjoyed the 1 hour experience of the Beta, will play the full game when it releases!
Just one thing, i hope there will be more resolution options? For me this will be 1920x1080p. This isn't really a problem, but something i hope will be brought into the full release of the game.
This is a really good game that reminded me the MOST of Crash Bandicoot. One thing that is particularly impressive is the camera; rarely will you have a problem with that. Cons? Well, it's not as sharp and detailed as a Triple A game but so what? And the main character is pretty dorky looking. lol
OVERALL 7.7 out of 10
Bluu looks like Neville Longbottom before puberty
5/5
I don't mean to discourage the developer but honestly this game really really should be in Early Access. I know it says BETA on it, but it's on steam as a regular release, and it's simply not ready. The game world has promise but it needs A LOT of work. Platforming seems floaty and imprecise. Combat is clunky and unsatisfying. The sound effects are low quality and ineffective. And there are bugs. I literally got stuck because I jumped out of bounds looking for secrets and had no way back into the level, Not to mention the game is incredibly short. Right now, it's just not worth playing.
Edit - Now that the game is fully out, I can safely say that I do NOT believe this game is worth playing. Basically, nothing was fixed from it's early access/BETA release to it's full release. Poor combat, poor level design, poor sound design still plague the game. Sure an extra two levels were released but they aren't any better than the rest of the game. Not worth your time or money.
Hey! Developer! Did you forget to flag your game "Early Access"? I though this product was finished. This game just seems rough. The main character is just lifeless. No expression. It looks bored no matter the context. Killing enemies isn't satisfying. They make a generic grunt when killed. They blink in and out of existence. Opening crates just spark up and disappear when hit. They don't get reduced into shrapnel. Functionally, the game is there, but it feels lifeless and not much to do.
Swimming feels incomplete. Can't dive. Don't hear splashing sound effects. Just one animation when in water. There is no idle pose or moving pose for swimming. Once you are in water, can't get out unless there is a beach nearby.
tl;dr
Short and incomplete. Pass up.
Superb platformer! Great price for it. Nice story and can be challenging at times. Was very entertaining. Took a while to learn how to 'counter attack'. It is quite short but the developer is still active and adding levels. Enjoyed 13 hrs on it. Was great to play on my phone via Steam link and steam controller. Want to try out the co-op bit too. Looking forward to the full game! Thanks SPARK!
First impression: CUTE and i will play more soon!
Another first impression is, yes, i am a inverted player (boo me if you want haha). Having no way to change the controls to an inverted camera bugs me more than it should and makes for a not so smooth experience. I will try for now to deal with it and play the game more, it will probably take me a while to get used to it, but i will try ;)
If you are planning to bring out a new update soon, please consider bringing a possibility to change the controls into the options :) (and perhaps a possible option for V-sync :D )
really curious how the finished product will look and play!
Ascent: Crash Landing is a beautiful slice of 90s nostalgia. From the vibrant level designs to challenging but rewarding gameplay, this game is great value for money.
If you want to bring back those wonderful memories of playing old school platformer games, this is for you!
Summary:
I want to preface this review by saying that I _DO_ think this game has promise but I disagree that it's in Beta.
I like this game, I think it has a cute art style and reminded me somewhat of Jak and Daxter for the PS2. That said, The game is still basically in alpha stages and I don't think that's made clear enough by the trailer and description (yes, it says it's in beta but the game has been out for 6 months and beta typically means only minor changes are coming)
I'm not mad about the few bucks I spent on it and I probably won't bother refunding it either but I wanted to at least have something here that mentioned what this is: an alpha.
The Good:
- Cute graphics
Very nice art style reminding me of old games like Jak and Daxter.
- Movement feels pretty good
Never missed a platform in a way I felt was unfair
- Cute sidekick
Gotta have it
- Slight nostalgia for 90s and early 00s platformers
This is the promise it makes and I think it will deliver on it.
The Bad:
- Inconsistent graphics
Some textures look like they belong, others dont. And the Crystal shader? Doesn't fit. IMHO
- No Options menu
Not being able to tweak settings is a huge issue
- Horrible Performance
Bought this to play on lower end laptop that more than meets requirements but the game isn't playable. Boot it up on my desktop with an RTX 2080 and I get stutters in cutscenes... On a 2080....
- No polish
Still needs a layer of polish before it can really be "production ready"
To the dev:
Dont get discouraged by this, I really think this game can become something great, it's just going to take a little time and that's okay. If the game was listed as Early Access or something, I'd have recommended it despite those things. I'll update my review as well as I do plan on following this project.
I can imagine my son liking this. Nice work.
One thing: my display is 1600x1200 and the loading screens and dialogue ran off the right side of the screen... you might want to check any assumptions you're making about the screen size.
No other problems to report though chap :)
Oh yes... I am thoroughly enjoying this game. It's early in development, but there's enough of a challenge going on here. I can't wait to experience more levels. Hopefully our little buddy will gain new friends in future updates.
If you're a Linux user, you should be able to run the game. The only issues I'm encountering are the sound stuttering, and a few colors are slightly off. I know there's a fix for Proton that can take care of the sound stuttering. My Xbox One controller works here, too. The other thing I'd recommend is to use a dedicated GPU while playing the game in Linux. Integrated graphics fails to run for me here. That may depend on your setup, but that's been my experience thus far.
EDIT -
After much thought, I have decided to return My Review to a Positive Review. I apologise to the Developer as I do realise He Is a Solo Developer and making a Game Is hard.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A solid attempt at recreating the style of the 3D Platformers from the 90s to very early 2000s. Nearly at 100% of the Achievements.
Edit - As of 1st of October 2019, I have 100% of the Achievements.
Visuals - 4/5
----------
A very colourful Game with vibrance and an Interesting art direction. Some levels look great such as the Hub and Island level but some can be a bit too dreary such as the Snowy level. Overall, I am looking forward to seeing how the other levels will look.
Some Objects such as switches don't really stand out that much and could leave Someone a bit confused on What to do next.
I also hope the Enemies will get more variaty too as, So far, There are only 2 Models for Them.
Controls - 3/5
-----------
The Character, Bluu, controls decently. Jumping can feel a bit stiff and moving while In the air Is a bit floaty. I hope this gets fine tuned as movement and control Is VERY Important In a 3D Platformer, Requiring precision and accuracy when making leaps. There have been a few Instances where I attempted to jump over a gap, Only to fall down to a lower level or even My death. I have had a few moments Where Bluu refuses to jump while I am running too.
Combat Is a bit clunky too. Tailswiping can be a big hit or miss and all the Player really has to do Is employ a hit and run technique to defeat Enemies. Looking forward to seeing a more varied Movement Set In the future.
Glider controls are slightly stiff but passable. It only occurs In a Mini-Game, So far, so It might be a bit too early to judge.
I also hope Swimming gets tuned up a bit too as It Is rather drastically slow compared to the rest of the Game, To the point Where It becomes a chore. If the Game ends up having a Water level later on where Swimming Is a must then This could really use a bit of speeding up.
Co-Op controls don't see to work? I've tried all buttons but nothing seems to move the Second Character.
Sound - 4/5
---------
Enemies do tend to make the same sound a lot and the death sound does kind of remind Me of the Elites from Halo, Ha ha.
The Soundtrack Is easy going. I really enjoyed the Hub World and Desert Island Tracks. Very laid back! The Desert Island Track gives Me a very big "Halo" vibe once the Drums kick In and I am loving It! Really suits the exotic nature of the Island. The very adventurous Battle Music can be a bit jarring after Instantly playing after the more laid back Ambient Music. They are good Musical pieces, Though. They do capture the mood and setting, I just think they could use a bit more blending In... But that could just be Me nitpicking. Overall, A fantastic job with This. I am looking forward to hearing more Music In This Game.
Gameplay - 4/5
-------------
So far, There Is only one way to combat Enemies and the Level selection Is small. Of course, This will be expanded upon as the Game progresses In development. Collecting the Orbs Is easy enough and There are a few well hidden Secret Areas. There Isn't much Platforming In some of the Levels other than getting over some pits or going up a level and even when There are, The only danger Is missing a Platform due to the Issue with the Controls as I stated above.
Co-Op - 3/5
---------
So far, I couldn't find a way to move the Second Character. Perhaps adding the Controls to the Control Screen would help.
I do appreciate There being Co-Op In the first place... I just wish I knew how to actually get It working.
Edit - After I was able to Play through Co-Op with a Second Controller, The overall System did Work really well. However, Being Limited to a Single Map and not being able to Do much with It does leave much to be Desired. Perhaps Adding Challenge Maps or far more Complex Puzzles? That could go a really long Way!
Overall - 18/25
----------
This Is a very fine attempt at making a 3D Platformer. It has artistic charm and definitely has potential to be Something good. Especially, As far as I am aware, It Is being developed by One Person. That Is an achievement In Itself.
I would definitely recommend This Game to 3D Platforming Fans, Such as Myself, But for the more Hardcore or Relaxed Gamers, They may want to wait until more Content Is added.
It IS worth the current Price, Though. Whether This Price will rise or not remains to be seen. While I do question Why the Game wasn't put Into Early Access due to low amount of Content and as It Is still being developed, I can understand the Developer's Intentions. Whether Anyone else will, However, Is another question.
And I really hope There will be a way to know the Controls for the Second Character In Co-Op.
Overall, I have been enjoying This Game and I really do wish the Developer the best of luck with This. Seeing more 3D Platformers appear Is a great Thing for a Gamer like Me. :)
I do hope to Include Bluu In a Picture I am planning on drawing featuring All 3D Platforming Mascots from Crash to Lucky to Sonic etc.
