This game looks good, but it's beyond stupid!

You play the role of a little girl, you start in your room and get downstairs. There you find your traumatized older brother and you must wind up his music box toy to keep him calm. In the upper left corner there is a hud, there you have two bars, one is your health, and the other is your brother sanity. I don't know what happens when your bro loses his sanity, and I don't understand why you have a health bar since you die every time when you get jump scared. Then you pick up the key that opens every door, which was previously locked. Each room has one or more barricaded windows that your creepy neighbors are trying to destroy. If they destroy a barricade you must find it and fix it before they enter. So they destroy a barricade then nothing happens for some time, it gives you time to repair, but not much. if you fail to find which barricade has been destroyed, the neighbors enter your house and can jumpscare you to death anytime from out of nowhere!
There is no way telling where they are, or she is since the neighbors so far just seem to be this one super-annoying zombie child girl, especially annoying when she sticks on your face a.k.a. jumpscare you.

Thing is, you will rarely find in time which of the barricades has been destroyed, the sound cue alone is often not enough, and the house feels like a small labyrinth, and then the doors close behidnd you automatically.
Not to mention the house has so too many rooms and you must check constantly both floors, that is impossible to make it, IMO, not with such game mechanics, anyway.
Also, I would say that the directional sound is pretty confusing and doesn't sound very precise, it's hard to pinpoint where the sound of a broken barricade is coming from. So the sound is really not helping you that much here, but it's literally the only hint you have.

And by the way, when you run, your steps are super loud and so repetitive, it feels weird,... but the whole game does.
I honestly doubt that anyone finished the game ever, not even the devs. If they say they did I don't believe them. It's just stupid, as it is now. I managed to repair 3 broken barricades and that is my record. Right now it feels that the whole aim the developers had with this game was simply to scare the player, always with the same jumpscare that you cannot avoid, once you're late to repair the barricades. And you simply don't have time. Running frantically on both floors opening rooms checking the windows every time in such a big house is far far far from being fun to me. Also, every time I die, and get thrown in the main menu, the game crashes. I rarely have any crashing games, The number is pretty close to zero.

Also I forgot to write about how it has no options whatsoever, not in the game menu or anywhere else. And when you hit the pause - ESC key instead of resume is says resumu. This just goes to show us the amount of care and testing that the developer put into the game.

In conclusion, I can't really recommend this game is the state it is now, for an actual enjoyable experience it would need much more work.

Okay, first up: no Options, despite the fact that I had some early game screen-tearing. Not the most promising of starts.

Secondly: an unskippable cutscene at the start of the first "night", aggravated by the fact that I missed a brief-yet-vital on-screen tutorial while looking elsewhere on my first attempt; prompting a restart. And then died soon after that, due to a fatal jumpscare with no context whatsoever, on my second attempt.

Was the jumpscare effective? Sure. Unfortunately, not much else about the game was.

The in-game "tutorials", as it turned out, were crap at best. For example, after I found my brother on the first "night", and finally worked out what I needed to do to comfort him and prevent the abovementioned jumpscare - the game failing to point out a nearby music-box that I needed to wind up - I was then told to "watch out for the surprise of your neighbours!" Quite what this meant, I didn't know.

I assumed the requisite spooky ghost lady was my "neighbour", but how I was supposed to evade her, I had no idea. I suspected it had something to do with sound cues, and for some reason I was ushered into a room to obtain a key to feck-knows-which door; so perhaps I was supposed to be moving about the house doing stuff, though I'll be buggered if the game made it clear what those things were. (I eventually worked out which room said key opened, but couldn't work out what to do within before Grudge-lady shuffled in and snuffed me.)

With a much better tutorial this game might - just might - be alright. As it stands, I'm sorry, but it's no fun to keep returning to the beginning of the level, suffer through the exact same unskippable cutscene, act out the exact same movements to get back to the room with the brother and obtain the key, then proceed to rinse-repeat-rinse-repeat until my trial finally ceases being error. I know there's been this whole post-Five Nights at Freddy's trend of games in which the player is meant to suss out the mechanics for themselves - Emily Wants to Play, et al - but I'm sorry, if the already-challenging likes of Freddy's and Boogeyman could tell me at least the earliest mechanics of the game, then you can too! I don't get much joy out of reading devs' minds, I'm afraid.

Grab Sophie's Curse instead. This was clearly influenced by that game, which is not only scarier but also explains itself quite well (e.g. that one made it quite, quite clear that you had to keep hand-cranking generators in order to stay alive; and furthermore placed multiple generators in various rooms, so you knew the reason why you were moving frantically about the house in the first place). Perhaps Home Security's dev will read a few reviews like this one and do something about clarifying the tutorials, in which case I would be very happy to try this again in a couple of months (after the inevitable barrage of updates is done with).

For now, though, I'd give this one a miss, unless a slew of other reviewers prove me a moron by easily working out what I so clearly couldn't...or at the very least wouldn't, seeing that one of my pet hates in games is re-watching cutscenes and repeating the same gameplay over and over and over again, until the Ringus come home.

Verdict: 4/10.
