Описание

Knights of Tartarus is a role-playing game where you enter the underworld to fight off a legendary order of knights and save the world. To have a chance, you will need monsters to teach you their spells, craft items, solve puzzles and even compete against your rival.

FEATURES

Explore an open world and travel into the magical monster dimension called Tartarus. You'll find many friends and not so friendly characters along the way.
There are many regions each containing unique puzzles, treasures, and enemies.

Fight against magic beasts to gain spells, crafting materials and gold. Each monster holds special and unique abilities which can be learned. Monsters also give you crafting materials for making equipment. Additionally, there are skill upgrades that can be gained by leveling up. These give you special perks like performing combo moves or becoming immune to paralysis, and much more.

Great and varied soundtrack.
Huge bosses that are difficult but fair.
A cute dog.

I want to like this game, I really do, but I can't.
The character moment is super awkward, every step is followed by a pause, even while sprinting. So there's constantly this start and stop when traversing.
Actually getting spells involves defeating an enemy and just praying RNG gods are willing to grace you enough that not only does the monster come back to sheepishly give you a reward, but that the reward will be more than a single gold. I'd say the chance of any reward besides exp is maybe 1/10, 1/15? Which isn't bad by itself, but given the time between enemy spawns and the low chance that the enemy will actually fork over a spell just causes the whole thing to drag if, say, you want to get a lightning spell for the first boss because merely grinding levels takes forever.
The direction past meeting the king for the first time is super vague too. 'Go rescue some dudes' is all you're really given with no sign that you're taking the correct path until you're at the end of the trek. My first attempt playing this ages ago involved me going everywhere but the correct place for the longest time.

Overall, I don't mind the idea of it, but ultimately I'd argue the game doesn't really stick the landing.

Knights of Tartarus captures a nostalgic retro feel while also putting its own spin on things. The game's atmosphere feels a little like Undertale, but it's shorter and less ambitious. It also keeps things a little too simple for my liking in terms of both mechanics and character advancement. Overall, given my appreciation for classic RPGs, I found it easy to become engrossed and lose track of time with KoT for several hours at a time.

Quality little solo character RPG with top down Zelda style dungeons. No random encounters, leveling comes pretty quickly and spells/materials acquired from monsters are fairly plentiful. Good visuals and some very good music.

There are a few negatives to mention. At least back when I played (which was when it was out of Early Access) the earth dungeon could not be left from till you defeated the boss (though it's possible this was never the case and I simply missed something). Puzzles reset if you happen to leave the area. There's no in game crafting guide (though the dev did create and pinned one on the forums). None of these detract from the game that much and single character RPGs are incredibly rare as it is, so please do give it a shot.

Love it any good retro rpg I have to have. Worst part to me is the battle animations they are weak and just a small slash on the screen. These types of battle styles are my favorite but could be a lot more colorful.

A love letter to the Gameboy Color. Very faithful to the limitations of the hardware and will pick at the nostalgia nerve for games like Zelda or Dragon Quest III. There seem to be a few bugs in the game, such as the hero's ogre sprite remaining after taking off the Ogre Pendant, but it doesn't affect gameplay.

Definitely get! You won't regret it.

A good Gameboy Color RPG

(Played in April 2020)
Great game! It has a nice retro feel (Gameboy Color), good soundtrack and really reminds something between The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages/Seasons (dungeons, items, puzzles) and Pokémon Blue (battle screens and the overall feel of the town), but the game has its own personality.

The developer is very active on Steam and seems to really listen to the bug reports and suggestions from the community (adding new options and items, speeding up text messages and battle animations, nerfing attack moves and enemies, changing the price of some items etc.).

It's worth mentioning that in a short period of time the game received many relevant updates, and some reviews may not be considering the implemented changes.

From what I’ve seen around on the internet/videos/reviews, I think it’s underrated. The game, as it is right now, is a really fun retro experience and I’ve had a great time playing it!

Review

I was pretty excited to start playing Knights of Tartarus when I first bought it. It looked like a game ripped right off the Gameboy Colour, specifically a Zelda game. That hope was soon answered as it didn't just have Zelda puzzle elements in dungeons, but also a turn-based gameplay style! Playing even further I discovered a crafting system for weapons and armour, and the world in general being fairly non-linear. For example, I defeated the earth boss first, but you could also defeat the wind boss first and unlock a whole new area to visit before even facing the earth boss. All of this sounds very cool right, what could possibly go wrong? Well.. there are a few issues that make some of the gameplay absolutely aggravating. Let's start with the Zelda puzzle elements, which is basically item-based gameplay to solve obstacles. If you remember Link's Awakening, it was sort of tedious to switch items because of the limited amount of buttons. You could carry two, and had to go to the menu constantly to switch. Surprisingly, Knights of Tartarus handles this even worse, far worse even. You can only equip one item at a time, and instead of just selecting it you have to sit through a confirmation dialogue that is unskippable. Now imagine doing this in a room where you constantly have to switch between items. What's even worse, the dungeons and puzzles reset after a defeat or leave, meaning that you have to do all the rooms with said puzzles in them again if you didn't finish off the boss the first time. To be fair this issue is mostly relevant to the final dungeons, but it certainly is annoying. I did have my fair share of defeats because being open-world does bring along some issues. The challenge of this game is all over the place, with some bosses taking legit strategies and medical item consumption, while others die in a hit or two. The challenge didn't give me an issue personally, but grinding at some points is almost a requirement so do keep that in mind. Grinding goes pretty fast though so kudos for that. The combat feels weirdly like a non-Pokemon Pokemon game when it comes to status effects and the like. It does the job well enough though, nothing to complain about here. I also liked the mechanic that if you've fought a monster once, the next time you fight them you can actually see their health bar. It's a simple touch but one that I approve of. Spells are actually learned from monsters as well, so if you're choosing the mage class there's definitely a good amount of spells to choose from. There's a good diversity in skills to choose from as well after every five level-ups, though one of the defensive perks negates one of the attack perks and that just felt weird. Overall Knights of Tartarus is a good game, and one that I would definitely have liked more if some of the bugs and my earlier mentioned problems are ironed out.

Mediocre at best, and dickish at worst. Battles consist of mashing the attack button or spells (if you're able to earn them in the first place) and hoping you kill the enemy before it kills you. If an enemy kills you in a dungeon, be prepared to redo every puzzle. The crafting system would be fine if you'd had a bestiary that told you which enemies dropped specific crafting items instead of gold. Exploration is really bad despite the small map, because there's A LOT of backtracking. Every time I decide to progress a bit more, the game gets worse. If you're going to purchase this game, PLEASE get it on sale!

A short and sweet old-schooly RPG.

The most interesting aspect, in my opinion, is getting spells from enemies instead of learning them naturally. Now I played as the Warrior class so I didn't find the spells very useful, but it's still a fun gimmick. They are most likely more useful if you play as the Mage class.

There's also a minor crafting mechanic, which lets you upgrade equipment and make some really powerful stuff.

Fun little retro RPG with well made puzzles and sweet music. The dev is quick to respond and fix problems people may have. It may be a little tricky for some but with enough persistence you'll be sure to find your way.

So I've only played the first hour of this game, but I will update my review as I see fit.

This game leaves a hell of a first impression. Anyone who is a fan of early JRPGs like Dragon quest will immediately fall in love with the game's simple turn based combat system. The story thus far has been intriguing, and the sprite work and music have fit the sort of mysterious tone that the game presents you with early.

All in all, a VERY strong start for what I believe will be a very good game.

tldr; if you like jprgs, BUY THIS

This is my first review on Steam, so forgive me if I have terrible formatting for this review.

Overall, the game is fairly good. It still feels relatively incomplete, but I assume the dev(s) for this game will continue to add content to make the game better. There are multiple puzzles in this game.. Some have some thought whereas if you think too much, you won't figure it out. The controls are easy, as well as the combat. It's a simple turn-based system. The story is fairly simple, but there's not much dialogue within the game. However, I enjoyed the ending, because I try not to guess how things will flow so I can be pleasantly surprised or disappointed. I was pleasantly surprised with this one. I feel like it's pretty easy to level in this game, but at certain points it feels like you hit a wall, and then later you continue to level pretty easy, then hit a wall, etc, etc. I would continue writing about the good things, but I will move on to some of the cons.

As a knight, which is the class I played, you don't come stock with spells. Obviously, this is okay. However, to learn spells in this game a monster has to teach you the skill or spell. When I beat the game I had 3 spells.. It almost seems to heavy on the RNG side to possibly obtain a skill or spell from a monster. There is a crafting system in this game which is cool, but it feels a little wonky. There's a crafting guide on the forums for this guide, but unless you felt like grinding out multiple mats, you'd be wasting a lot of resources trying to figure it out yourself, especially if you made an item that wasn't really suited for your class or what you want in general. You also can't sell gear to get back a little money, which is also fairly rare in this game.

I'm not going to go into crazy detail about everything, but as of right now those are my general thoughts on the game. Overall, I think it's a pretty good buy if you like the retro type rpg games. The dev is pretty active on fixing bugs and glitches in the game, and if things need nerfed or buffed then that is fixed as well. If the dev stays active and adds new content to the game (hopefully) then I feel like the game's potential will eventually be unlocked.

So, as of right now I'll give the game a 7.5/10.

Classic, simple retro RPG, with little to note

Well, to the games credit, it also has some bits of character sprinkled on top, such as the fact that no one dies in the game. Instead, they surrunder and leave you. Sometimes, they come back and give you money or loot, as opposed to you just killing them asd snatching your loot off their dead bodies.

By saying Retro, I mean, it's retro in every sense. it even dialog is beyond simplistic and straightforward, with random people regularly just giving you hints strait away. I actually like this. Just basic adventure RPG gameplay with no strings attached, where the combat system is very simple.

However, I would only recommend this game if you are into retro RPGs, and you're looking for something to relax to

ps: the game had many bugs upon release, but these were fixed within the first few days after release

Just purchased and installed on Mac.
Clicked play, failed to load with this error:
An error occurred while updating Knights of Tartarus (missing executable):
/Users/myfolder/Library/Application Support/Steam/steamapps/common/Knights of Tartarus/Knights of Tartarus.app

Followed the steam support guide:
Reinstalled, cleared cache, checked file integrity, ect.
No luck.

Navigated to folder and found .../common/Knights of Tartarus/ only contained two files:
mac_content.app and version.txt
Clicking on mac_content.app started the game, although the text was off to the side, not within the 'game frame' as shown in online videos.
Renamed mac_content.app to Knights of Tartarus.app and everything seemed to load properly.

A little tearing while walking down large corridors, like the castle.
Music nostalgic, controls should be more obviously displayed:
arrow keys to move, X to 'go back', z or space to menu, return to select

So this game was going to get a pass but with how early access games are comming out as "finished products" (dont lie to me about this any more, you know its true) i cant overlook flaws anymore.

This game dose start out pritty charming and the monster fights are pritty neat and varied, but after a while the RNG battles start wearing reeeally hard on the patience, mainly around the pirate ship level, where i feel every 5 steps you get another encounter, INCLUDING while your TRYING TO SOLVE PUZZLES. This is VERY irritating.

I also know this is early access, but sometimes i feel some parts glitch out, making me worry that progression might be impossible in some areas, havent had that happen yet, but it dose feel a constant worry. (Though havent had that yet)
BUT that also brings the point of mechanics, resetting themself in the dungeon, nice to know progress resets when i go out, save, restock, come back, and progress is lost.

Wait a while on this.

First of all, I'm very obsessed about the graphic, the color tone is Gorgeous, the charactor , Monsters & the map design is just as cute as the Nes Rpg Game :《Karin No Tsurugi (Sword of Kalin) 》, and the battle system look like 《Dragon Quest 1》but the command is more simple , it's so easy to pick up! (I'm glad this game is make with Unity engine !)

There also have different combination of weapon and armor you can craft with different materials , especially it's not too hard for Level Up, so it's easy to make you addicted ! (It tooks me at least 4 hrs everynight when i back form work !)

Durling the game, The NPC doesn't have much dialogue to say (But sometimes the dialogue is Quite Funny), and there's not so much hint, when you meet some Puzzle , you got to solve it by your instinct and observation, Some puzzles are《Soko-Ban》like, sometimes when you walk in the dugeon, you'll meet some "Hide & Run" Trap too, it's quite challenge !

Although it's an Early Access, but it quite entertain me so much , I was started to play this game at early November, and now, I'm Lv 91, but it's still have much much skill point to level up and there's really difficult for me in the new dungeon that on the recent update , I know it's more update and challenge to come and i highly recommand this game to all like Retro style Puzzle RPG gamer ! You won't be disappointed !

I want to start by saying this is a great game. I was looking for a classic, retro-style game revolving around fantasy and knights, and this just ticks all the boxes.
Unfortunately it has proven to be very buggy so far which, though expected during early access, has made it a little unplayable for now. I have played two sessions so far, and the game has frozen very quickly during both. The first time it happened after roughly 10 minutes or so, the second time maybe 2 minutes. Basically the game stays open, the music keeps playing etc. but all controls suddenly stop working and there's no way to exit without restarting my laptop.
Without this bug, this would definitely be my favourite game to play right now. Hopefully, if it gets fixed soon, I can have a proper playing session and appreciate it fully!

Game won't full screen. Z is inexplicably used as the "enter" key by default. Took a lot of button mashing to figure out how to even start a new game. I appreciate the devs dream but I can't recommend the game as it stands, needs a lot of QoL attunement.

Edit: Recommending the game due to dev addressing the issues listed above.
