The control in this game is surprisingly fluid and easy to pick up. It's designed to be difficult and there are some movement patterns that are frustrating, but a successful run of a level is quite satisfying. The story mode looks to be pretty extensive and the community level design is also well implemented.
Great fast paced and tight platformer. Controls are good and it's a nice mix between action and puzzler. It's like Supermeatboy and Celeste had a baby and it was slimey.
Nothing bad to say about the game, personally I'm not a fan of the overworld style "level select" thing but that's more because I like to do a level, complete it and move on. A traditional level select menu would've won me over. Personal preference aside, if you're into tricky platformers this one's a good one to get.
Pros
-The graphics are so awesome and aesthetically pleasing!
-I LOVE the soundtrack! Pretty much every song is awesome to listen to while playing levels. The sounds are also pleasing to listen to, especially the level complete sound.
-I love the mechanics of how to navigate the Slime King - having him stick on walls and ceilings. I very much agree with what Josh said on his website on why the mechanics of the Slime King should be simple to understand and not have too many things like power-ups and a complex environment.
-Many levels are puzzles, such as figuring out the order of picking up keys to unlock doors and destroy mines.
-The boss fights! These are unique in that they are also puzzles and you must figure out how to destroy them using the environment around you.
-The Slime King himself has a cute and unique design!
-The bonus levels are a huge jump in difficulty from the main levels, as they do include mechanics not seen in the main levels such as the shooting arrows in the Echoing Entrance bonus levels.
Neutral
-I haven't really used the level editor that much, so I have no opinion on that at the moment.
Cons
-I feel that the game could benefit from an optional rewind feature (that you can turn on/off in the settings mode) where you can rewind the Slime King after he gets killed by accident (and you only have 5 seconds to do so before you must start the level again). In general (and this is true for other games), when I play a level, die many times in the latter portion of the level, but then when I play the level again, I end up dying in the earlier parts of the level a lot. That's up to you as this game is meant to be very challenging.
-I haven't played this game in a while, but there has been an overworld glitch that says "fatal error" and the game crashes to the point where my computer's screen turns black and I had to reset it.
-For me, having the ghost of the Slime King's previous attempt at solving a level can be distracting, so I disabled it. That's for me only; other people would benefit from it greater than me.
-Just a minor thing, but I feel that there should be blue/orange/red level-completion goo for custom levels as well.
Overall - 9/10
This game is one of my top favorite platformers and is extremely underrated. I unfortunately could not make any more progress after the first level of Metal Mines due to the first two cons I've mentioned above. I hope this game gets more people who can help with Early Access. Maybe even a temporary, Early Access-only mode where you can play all levels so we can easily discuss which levels are misplaced and which ones are easier than others. Either way, this is still one of my top favorite puzzle-platformers. Thank you so much Josh for this wonderful game! Someday I'll get back to it when I am ready to solve the Metal Mines levels again (as well as the rest of this game, as I've only solved the first Metal Mines level).
Incredible skill-based platformer.
It's controls are great (comparable to The End is Nigh but much faster paced), the levels are all interesting and fun to play, and there is loads of content (and a level editor!). The levels are designed more like puzzles than other platformers of this type, but they are always the interesting type and there is still a strong focus on execution. If you enjoy hardcore platformers such as Super Meat Boy or Celeste then I would recommend this game.
My one criticism would be that the level select UI is a bit janky (which is separate from the story mode which uses a hub world), although I assume this is getting updated as the game is currently in Early Access.
Edit: Game now has a level editor AND a level exchange to share the levels.
