Fun and unique. A great point-and-click
If you like Lovecraft, with a little humor and a twist, you'll like this.
I really enjoyed h this cheeky little point & click.
Loved the art style.
Loved the sound fx and the voice acting was absolutely fantastic.
The story was creepy but not scary, tons of mood. and great environmental storytelling going on.
The humor was cringy in a good way- lots of pop culture references- some that GenX will get without having to Google it, some geared to Millennial senses of humor, some very Gen Z. The cheekiness and the overdone cringe was what made it funnier to me. No deeply hidden subtle humor in this one.
Some adultish situations and language, so probably not great for young kids, but pre-teens and teens? No real problems, I think.
I see some folks saying none of the characters were interesting or relatable, but I found them all to be quite relatable, even the annoying ones (because we all have some people that we love but who annoy the heck out of us in our lives, don't we?).
Accessibility
Text has good contrast and is of a good size- but there is no Text or UI scaling- keep that in mind if you have vision issues, and changing resolutions can cause some elements you need to see and use drop below the screen edges. You may need to use a magnifier program to make things larger if needed- I did not test any, so I apologise- I cannnot say if they will be truly helpful.
I played on a 34" 2560x1440 monitor in fullscreen, wearing my bifocals, and had no issue. But there are some fonts that are used that were more difficult to read, and could be problematic for someone using a screen reader or with certain forms of dyslexia.
Can be played with one hand using only a mouse *except* for needing to use the space bar to bring up all interactive spots at once (you can see them by hovering over them as well, but you will need to search every scene carefully in that case).
UI can be a bit wonky- some interactive spots and the indicators for them can overlap when multiple intractable objects are close together, and the label can sometimes stick to your mouse cursor causing one object to appear to have 2 labels. Could be a bit confusing for some.
All voice acting is also displayed as text, so the game should be playable for Deaf and HoH gamers, though you may miss some of the ambient sound and audio clues/cues.
None of the puzzles were really difficult for me, but for some folks with certain types of ASD or ADHD, they may be frustrating. Lots of missable achievements as well- use a guide (there are several good ones here on Steam and online).
**There are some visual effects and lighting effects that create flashing or strobing, and many scenes are either very dark or very bright. May cause issues for people with some forms of photo-sensitive neurological to conditions (mainly easily triggered seizure disorders and migraines).**
No fast reflexes needed, no timed chases or puzzles, so you can take your time working through things at your own pace.
The game does autosave, but there are some scenes you cannot save in until a cutscene plays, and making lots of save points is recommended so you can go back and replay a scene if needed- again, there are guides that can help you with getting 100% in a single playthrough.
All in all, I really did enjoy my time with this game, and absolutely recommend it for people who like mildly creepy, weird, some cringy humor, and light puzzle action.
Fun puzzle solver, with cute animation, and a wonderful story. Will replay every couple of years!
A fun point and click adventure game with quality graphics and voice acting. Well worth playing.
Cute and nostalgic game. Got to Chapter 6 and there's no way to exit the voodoo gentleman's house. Re-loaded multiple times and replayed from a recent save and no arrow pops up after the dialogue. Sad.
A really fun, fully voiced and well-animated adventure game. As a fan of Lovecraft things I thought it did a good job of referencing the lore but also being funny. I really appreciated how you can use the space bar to find all the hot spots on a page so there's no pixel hunting and also like all good modern adventure games it doesn't let you get stuck by missing an item you can no longer access
Cathulhu.
Is a very fun game! the jokes are on point and the art is just so pretty!!! Does make you want to interact with everything! and all the characters are so lovely! very fun!
Lets go back in time when such games were good
Oh what a charming game, what a breath of fresh (yet old) air. The charm, the looks, the atmosphere, almost everything is great.
This is an example how you do point&click adventure game in modern times – you just do it like you did it back in the day.
You play as three characters in a crazy world revolving around cultists and solve puzzle to get around through the crazy world.
Gameplay is traditional point&click, go there, talk to someone, use an item, pick up an item and so on. But it's done so well, just a perfect balance between frustrating and boring or too easy. Usually the puzzles aren't too hard but will require some time to understand. What I admire the most is that the puzzles are logical, that's why you need to think more rather than trying random things.
All the characters are made well are super charming, especially the black cat. The world is big and youu'll explore multiple areas full of secrets and puzzles while unraveling the crazy story which culminates in a way you would've never guessed.
Graphics are great, it looks cute, the character design is great and so are the surrounding. You can see this game was made with love and care. It takes you back to those days when such games were popular. And bring those memories back.
Sound desing is another great thing about this games. Voice acting, especially cat's voice acting is outstanding. The music on the other hand could be a bit better, it becomes slightly monotonous.
Performance? I mean it's a 2D aventuure game. Toaster friendly tag.
This and excellent adventure game I recommend to anyone who enjoys these types of games. Just get it, you won't be disappointed.
Pros
- Great story
- Amazing character design
- Good humor
- Fun puuzzles
- Charming artstyle
- Good sound design
Cons
[*]-
As a veteran of point&click games i gotta give it a thumbs down. Although the artstyle is pretty and the characters are well animated the gameplay is just too plain. The puzzles are too easy and items are practically thrown at you to know which one to use where (it's not Deponia, I tell you that). So it's more like a story driven clicking with a bit of thinking.
The story starts strong but later it seems the potential of quirky characters wasn't used much (possibilities of puzzle solving with kitteh and Buzz working hand in paw, for example) plus the Lovecraftian references are lost on you unless you are an avid reader of the man.
The jokes are quite funny and the music is great. I was impressed with a different dialogue line for most of the item-item combinations - made me experiment just to hear it. The art style and colour palette gets repetitive after a while and I discovered mid game that there is an option in the settings to switch off the waaaaay-too-dark screen (who made that???).
Finally, some items to be picked up are so blended in the background that it seems pointless to have such a beautiful artstyle if you hide the items so poorly.
To sum up, there's more negatives than positives about that game. Still, if the studion learns from these mistakes, I might try another game of theirs in the future.
An enjoyable Point and Click adventure game with a lot of charming humor and well done art. Hope they make a sequel at some point!
Loved it. Great atmosphere, art direction, humour and logical puzzles. can't wait for their next game.
some might find it too simple but I like when puzzles make sense. Strong voice acting, Puns here there and everywhere, love it. Great for spooky season.
The artwork, locations and character design were all really beautiful and motivated me to keep playing this game because I could tell that a lot of love went into it. I'm a long-time fan of point and click adventure games and I could tell that the creators of this game were too with the cute throwbacks to the Monkey Island franchise etc. I also really enjoyed all the very authentic Romanian things once we got to Transylvania.
However, at the end of the day the storyline was way too complicated and long-winded for me. It made it difficult to follow. And now that I finished it, I have no idea what happened in the game or what it was really about which makes me a bit disappointed.
It feels like the game developers were trying a bit too hard somehow. There were a looot of cool ideas, but not everything should have made it into the final game. Same with the amount of text/ speech. Same with the characters; there were a lot of cute and interesting NPC characters along the way but again somehow too many of them and either not enough or too many details, making it difficult to connect with all of them and to follow all the storylines. It felt like unnecessary competition of options and storylines: from 2 main characters (not necessarily an issue), multiple key supporting characters, 30+ NPCs and 3+? villains (entirely too many villains!). Less would have definitely been more.
Another improvement point: The puzzles were, most of the time, incredibly easy. It made it feel a bit incongruent; like maybe the game's target audience was very young? But then again, the convoluted storyline is perhaps for an older audience? I felt like I was busy completing a few very underwhelming puzzles or simply collecting obvious objects in the surroundings and using them for other things in those same surroundings- only in order to proceed to listening to a really long, complex, disconnected story that takes a very long time to get to a point. A couple of the puzzles did feel more difficult, but once I finally figured them out, they still just felt like checking a box to proceed to the next chapter rather than feeling amused by them or satisfied that I managed to complete them.
If I compare this game to something like Monkey Island (gold standard imo, and I guess the developers agree)- that was enjoyable because the text was mostly funny and fairly short and to-the-point. The storyline was pretty simple to follow. The puzzles were quite challenging, if not sometimes on the verge of frustrating, but they were highly creative. They left me with a sense of accomplishment once I figured them out. Also, they were often incredibly funny/ amusing which made it memorable and refreshing.
I am writing this review because I feel that the developers have a lot of potential and can improve their next game. Clearly a ton of effort went into this. And while I wouldn't play it again, I would be interested to see what else they create in the future.
(btw: It didn't take me 99 hours, that was just me leaving it open in the background)
I really loved this game. Artwork was great, reminded me of old school King's Quest 7. Story line, dialogue (although a little too long sometimes), and characters (voices are the best!) were all enjoyable. And who hasn't wished that their cat could talk to them, mine would probably be about as sarcastic as Kitteh. No bugs or glitches either so smooth playing. Game came out in 2019 and I'm hoping the publisher comes out with a sequel (hinted at in the tavern in Transylvania during the game) to delve into the librarian Kerwin's family tree!
I've played a lot of point and click adventure games and I truly wanted to like this one. Especially the art style, which I found very appealing, brought me to buy this game. The story though seems kinda boring. The jokes aren't that funny. The puzzles aren't really challenging. But again...the art style was great. Can't really recommend this game though...
I don't generally write reviews, but I just passed what must be the single best sequence in adventure games since insult sword fighting in Monkey Island. I'm talking, of course, about the rap battle. Yes. In an adventure game, and it was laugh-out-loud amazing. If you like adventure games, you WILL like this game. Highly recommended and can't wait until what these developers are doing next.
great blend of Lovecraft and Lucas Arts. I would love to see a sequel
This one's a game that fails to deliver a cohesive experience or story, with the premise being unfortunately the only thing that hooked me.
The journey's mostly fine - a run of the mill, simple A -> B -> C plot that does bear faint notes of the stories that inspire it. Unfortunately the visuals are one-tone, with most of the game bearing the signature orange - yellow - brown - black set of colors regardless of where in the world the characters are. Dialogues similarly fall under the adventure game "tell a quirky line - tell a gameplay hint" stereotype, and the quirkiness doesn't really amount to much.
There's way more things to click than there are things to do - but achieved by having most hotspots requiring five interactions to fully check out. Since in most cases those interactions lead to weak flavor text or a generic joke, it's a slog to get through.
Sequence of events completely falls apart at the end. Expect characters teleporting, storylines getting frayed, events being dropped on the player out of nowhere, huge tone shifts, and of course the hallmark of the underdelivering kickstarter success - a very weak sequel bait.
Not my thing.
