Super cute and relaxing game! It is a little tough to figure things out at first, like how to use jellies for relics or how to activate shortcuts. Even so, the game does help guide you a bit and it's not too difficult to experiment and get things on your own. I do agree, it could use more tips/advice on things, but it's still enjoyable for those of us who like grindy, silly, and chill gameplay.
When I first started playing this game, it was too easy to progress in the plot and I got through it too easily. When the devs made update 1.3, they said it was going to be harder, so I decided to play it again. They made it impossible to progress. I actually believe the game is unbeatable based on the changes they made.
It's a very cute game and I spent hours playing it, I can't not recommend it.
That said, it still needs a bit of polish. I feel like I "wasted" a lot of time trying to breed the right colours of jellies only to realise they weren't right for the quests, or need a colour again and not be able to find out how to do it again. It'd be nice for more useful info to be added in the guide, like when you've bred a colour before you can then see directly in two clicks what combination you need.
Also the seasonal shipping quests don't always match what is available in that season. Which means you can't complete it, or skip it, and so can't do the next 2-3 quests left.
So overall there are some frustrations. However the jellies are still very cute, I loved breeding them, exploring the map looking for the right resources to turn into colours, breeding the right mix of colour+shape for the quests, etc. I spent about 50h on it overall...
I also wish it had more replayability (or "I can keep playing this forever because there's more to do still" playability) once the main story is done with, because I WOULD definitely spend more time playing this game, polished or not.
I was initially skeptical based on the mixed reviews, but this is honestly a very cute and relaxed little game. Granted, there is a little bit of a learning curve, and some places could use a little more direction or instruction, but once you figure out what everything does, it's pretty much smooth sailing from there on out.
The game has no real urgency and very much lets you explore, gather, collect, and breed at your own pace. There is a relatively minimal plot, but I found it largely secondary to everything else. That being said, I don't mind this. It's ultimately a jelly (slime) ranching sim, and it's perfectly fun on its own with just the ranching mechanics. I've dropped almost 50 hours into the game without collecting all the possible color variations and only just finished the main story a couple days ago. The plot itself doesn't actually take all that long if you simply focus on getting specifically what you need, but most of my time was absolutely spent just puttering around collecting items and jellies.
As stated in some other reviews, the game does sort of drop you in without a whole lot of instruction or direction. The tutorials and info dialogue do tell you the basics, but a lot of other mechanics require you to figure things out on your own - mostly by process of trial, observation, and error.
Additionally, there are a few extant bugs, but the dev team is very active and responsive in regard to support and enhancing/improving the game.
It's hard to recommend the game because it has some BIG flaws:
It looks great, it sounds great, and the controls are fluid, but the problem lies in the gameplay. The thing is that it's cryptic, you'll wander everywhere trying to make sense of what you are suposed to do. Tutorials are non existent and the menus are a puzzle.
The game expects you to play around with slime breeding and learn everything by trial and error and talking to the NPCs. The overwhelming amount of items you can gather at the start of the game and their effects doesn't help. It's too overwhelming.
There's another problem: The slimes. Why do I have to breed slimes? The narrative fails on that regard. Do they fight with other creatures? No. Do they evolve? No, they just change color and symbols over their head and turn into crystals to put in some places (too many). Do they have powers to help uncover areas? Kind of... The slimes help you find: More items. What you can do with these items? Get more items. It's like there is no objective. You have money but there's nothing to upgrade, just more items for the slimes to eat and poo more items and you can use alchemy to make more items and make them participate in like 3 or 4 minigames to get more items.
I know there are quests, and slimes help to complete them, but what is the reward? You guessed it, more items.
I think that the slime breeding is supposed to be the center of the gameplay loop. But it just doesn't work, because there is no big motive to breed them, just to keep breeding them. Plus, the amount of things you can do with them is preety limited (turn them into crystals or play a small amount of mini games)
I played 7 hours and after doing a bunch of secret uncover I will stop for now. I thought that the story (wich is hidden behind a lot of padding) would advance or new mechanics would be implemented but I can't see that happening. Maybe I'm wrong but after 7 hours there´s nothing new, I just run around getting items that are lying on the floor (yeah, the items are just there...), feeding them to the slimes that give me more items and it never ends, nothing different happens. I can't upgrade their ranch, or my tools, or the house, or the village or something. I can't even create new slimes, they all look the same with different ears and colors.
I am sure I'll keep playing but there is no motive to move forward in the game, just the hope that the gameplay gets better.
cute little game and fun and relaxing really slow start but that's fine with me
i've enjoyed what i've seen so far. sort of a collect-a-thon game with jelly raising and unlocks.
Jelly farm :3
A great looking game, with amazing potential. However, it sadly fails to actually deliver in so many ways.
I wanted to recommend this game, but I just can't with how everything seems so unfinished.
Many things in the game, like competitions, seemed pointless.
I only realised how to do competitions right at the end of the main story, but even when I finally realised how to do them, I felt there was no point in doing them.
The only 1 trait seems worth ever having. I really wish combinations were needed for the main story.
As for how to pass the time, I had to finish the game first until I finally read (on these forums) about using the library to pass time. That sure would have made the game more enjoyable, but then also probably would have made it extremely short for me due to how you can abuse it.
I would have loved to see unique rewards only possible from various tasks, which were required for the main story. You can just do the main story and never have a reason to do anything else.
I also noticed plenty of items were useless. For example, making a jellie stay awake didn't seem to matter. I could use abilities just the same when they were sleeping in my backpack.
Many people may still enjoy this game, as I know I did, but be warned that you might find yourself disappointed.
Even at 2x speed with cheat engine this game is still so slow. The gameplay loop just has you go and find some slimes, feed them a bunch of garbage, and wait. Then feed them more garbage, and wait. Eventually they turn into a crystal, which you'll need a few dozen of to actually progress between areas. That's it, that's the whole game. There's no point in talking to NPCs aside from occasional fetch quests. Most of the plants you can harvest are worthless. And there's no reason to actually improve your slimes with quality food and exp crystals, because the only point of slimes is to pump them full of garbage until they turn into a crystal.
I'm only putting negative because I wish I could do neutral. Ultimately, I cannot recommend the game at its current price for what it currently is, but I think there are some great basics in it that could be very fun.
Basically, I got the game because it seemed like a Stardew Valley/Slime Rancher game, with the cute aesthetic and exploration that I enjoy. The game as it stands though is very confusing and a lot of the things that I would consider intuitive...aren't.
You're a flute mage who lives on a slime farm with the rest of your family. Speaking to the people in your house doesn't really teach you much more, other than that you have at least one brother (although I would have sworn there were also two?) and that you are supposed to collect things. Mechanics aren't well explained imo, and the ones that are feel clunky to use. An example? There are at least three different things that can be used as currency that I found before I even finished the first part of the main quest.
Additionally, I have absolutely no idea how the slime ranching/evolving slimes to crystals mechanic works. You can feed them practically anything, and there is no noticeable difference between what you feed them. You plug in almost anything as food and it eventually becomes poop and crystals. There's a breeding mechanic, but I'm not sure to what end. The journal that supposedly explains all of that has SO MUCH INFORMATION in it that it's either overwhelming to rifle through, and doesn't have easily accessible points for where to find the info you've unlocked.
Speaking of the journal, where is the info for what the temples translated into? I unlocked the first inscription, and then had three more crystals on the farm and dad was nowhere around so I went and plugged them in, too. When I went back to dad for the translation, he told me it was in my journal. But WHERE? There are tabs within tabs within tabs, no alerts for new information to access, etc. Then, my previously never mentioned bird best friend invited me to come taste food, but I can neither figure out where or when.
The energy for casting is very short, and while there are areas you can use to refuel, none of them are intuitive. You can go to the library, you can eat meals with your family at specific times, and you can visit unlocked crystal shrines to get extra energy.
All in all, I am sure that a lot of work has gone into making this but it feels very unbalanced and a little chaotic, and instead of being a fun and relaxing experience it just feels stressful trying to understand what you're trying to do.
Alchemic Cutie is almost good. It feels aimless. The writing is a bit immature, the quest lines feels padded and there are way too many items - to the point that the world feels full of junk. There are also some loose ends design-wise which aren't tied up, and several obvious bugs, such as the way text is displayed at times. Definitely buy on sale and only if you are really really hungry for a little sandbox farming game that is more on the gentle, aimless Animal Crossing / Slime Rancher side than on the more purposeful and rich Stardew Valley side.
The problem is the Quest lines. You can go too many places based on too few interesting things and too little interesting character interactions. For example, it would be better if you unlock an area and need something alchemic from it - but you never do.
Would have really recommended more substantive goals with the slime breeding, too, e.g. unlocking specific achievements and types like a rock slime or diamond slime. And producing materials with them which are needed for some quest lines, e.g. diamond slime makes diamond shards, or you need the luminescent slime's irradiated jel to make something quest-related - that sort of thing.
I honestly think this game could have been in Early Access and still has potential to be majorly improved. I will check back in 3-6 months and see if there is a reason to flip my review to Positive. There's a lot of nice things here, and the music is good.
Btw, I also agree the "suction" noise for picking up plants should change to something more appealing. :)
Very chill and has a lot of secrets to uncover. It's super cute! Discovering new things every day cycle, and a tad of mystery to keep you going. This game really makes your mind wander and experiment on what you can do. This game has A LOT of content, and discovering the mysteries of the island is a huge goal.
Graphics are top notch in cuteness. It's very vibrant, and chill. The day and night cycle really makes the world feel alive, and the pixel art for the characters faces are priceless at moments.
Music is amazing, and the sound design is very fitting and... OF COURSE CUTE!
The mechanics are very unique as well, allowing you to explore the many different options you can muster on trying to complete your weekly tasks. Quests are heavily available to attend your time playing. And while some may feel grindy, it directs you to further goals on learning the game.
The only downside I can see is the heavy grindy parts, but that comes with learning on how to play the game. It's really fun learning the mechanics, while enjoying the cuteness.
Good game
There was a positive review hoping for a neutral score and I agree so this will be the bad half of that.
This is a cute and interesting game that could be great after a quality of life overhaul. Until then only buy if you want to support the devs or can handle less than stellar ui choices. Everything is hidden in dialog trees. I also and hesitant to say the game barley tells you much, but it could all be hidden in the single massive help book mixed with the character bio's and lore files.
Very reminiscent of Stardew Valley, the slimes are cute and so far gameplay is pretty fun. I will say I'm not 100% sure how to actually do some things like keeping the slimes happy so they don't die or become relics (relic mechanic is a little weird in my opinion, but it kind of makes sense). Using alchemy is fun, but also doesn't make sense all the time as you can only use it on certain items and it's only free to use sometimes I think? I've also had Franco stuck in his room for days walking into a trash can even after restarting, so it's a little buggy as well but I figured it would be when I purchased it. There's a shipment bin, like in Stardew, that doesn't seem to work either as I've been putting in items and no rewards are given. I'd also like to say it has been raining for days in my game (not sure if that's a seasonal thing or what) and it is insanely dark and difficult to see, especially at night. Overall, it is very fun as I've played 9 hours of it already and bought it yesterday, but it does have bugs and a lot of things aren't thoroughly explained, like I almost want a guide in the menu that I can read through when I get confused or something.
It's a really cute game. The mechanics of it are bit confusing at first, but the game was also just resealed. I'm excited to see where this game will go from here.
the game is so cute
Its cute but i cant stand the pick up sound effects and it crashed within the first 15 minutes, is there somewhere i can submit bugs?
