My hopes were not high because of all of the poorly written and misguided reviews below me, but I truly believe I have found a diamond in the rough. The main game kept me engaged throughout its puzzle THAT IF YOU CANT SOLVE WITHOUT HELP YOU RE BAD and SKILL ISSUE but then after that you get to go achievement hunting with geoff and gavin and everyone else its just a great time. All in all go check out my speedrun for the game and let's get it boys
I couldn't complete the picture puzzle. Apparently I'm stupid or the game doesn't give any hints.
Look, folks, I've given recommendations to some pretty mediocre stuff before (see: Into the Gloom). I like the first person pixel horror games that have cropped up on Steam thanks to the unique atmosphere they give (See: Into the Gloom, and particularly IMSCARED). I don't mind challenge, either, and I don't need things spelled out for me. I was drawn into The Call by its dirt cheap asking price, pixel atmosphere, and very intriguing premise. And for a short while, I was digging it.
You are a cop who is called in on a domestic disturbance in a secluded mansion. You have a gun, a baton, and a few other items that you get later on as well. As soon as you step in the house, things get a little weird, with shifting geography and stuff like that.
Like I said above, for a while, I was digging it. It wasn't as atmospheric as something like IMSCARED or Cry of Fear, but it had its moments. The first puzzle was kind of frustrating, but I pressed on. The next puzzle felt kind of tedious, but I pressed on. A set of encounters involving some enemies where you must move slowly was kind of frustrating, but I liked the sound and atmosphere of the area.
Then I reached the first boss. And this is where I stopped playing.
Without giving too much away, this boss in question is very heavily inspired by the encounters with Laura in the original Evil Within. As in, you have to destroy the creature's spawn zones while dodging said creature and getting caught is an instant death. It wasn't amazing in Evil Within since you died in one hit, which is almost never fun, but it also didn't grate too much since the game gives you some good tools to fight her with.
In The Call, the Laura equivalent moves faster than you. You already can't see very well, but Laura has a move that makes it even darker, effectively halving the space you can see in front of you. Once Laura sees you, it charges at you very quickly and the only way to get any kind of breathing room is to fire your weapon at it. Only the hit box is extremely specific. The weapon is slow to reload. Laura only gets stunned if you hit them while they are chasing you. Can't be while it's doing other animations, including the animation where it comes out of its spawn zone. Oh and while you're moving and trying to aim in just the right spot so Laura gets stunned, there's furniture, doorways, and plenty of other obstacles you can get caught up on. Remember, death means starting this encounter over from the beginning. By the way, it takes several seconds to destroy the spawn zones, and Laura has a nasty habit of, for some reason, coming out of the one that you're currently standing right next to, giving you no time whatsoever to react. Did I mentioned how precise you need to be to stun this boss? Aim a little high and nothing. Aim a little low and nothing.
Several times, I had almost destroyed all of the spawn zones. Then the game crashed in the middle of the fight and I had to restart it all over again.
Don't let the cheap price fool you. This game is not worth your time or money. There might be a nugget of a good, haunting game in here, but as it stands, it asks you to put up with too much BS for it to be worth your time.
Awful gave me the worst motion sickness ive ever gotten from any video game (this games the only game thats given me motion sickness) Horrible game design i would rather pay a homless man a dollar to kick me in the balls and spit on my face.
The game is scary as hell in the beginning and I like some of the puzzles BUT the end boss fight suckssssssss it so hard I didn't felt scared anymore and I just feel frustrated. the game is ok and it is worth playing but just know the end bossfight suck. I gave this game a 5/10
I've only played about an hour of this and not finished it at the time of writing, but wanted to write a bit about it. There's a level select screen in the game which implies I'm around half-way through the game, so it's probably not tremendously long, but then again this game is only a dollar, and the hour I've played I've enjoyed.
This game does not rely on jumpscares, has a simple but appealing (to me) style, actually is scary at times through atmosphere, audio, and I think has some neat ideas. This actually is not a defenseless horror game, you do have a gun at the start and shortly also get a baton, and a third and fourth item a bit later for as far as I've played. While you're not defenseless, this isn't an action horror game either as enemies are sparse. It's basically a cryptic horror puzzle game, there's very little dialogue or much in the form of a story from what I've played so far, you seem to be a cop exploring a house and there's environmental signs of a story, but not much else than that. There's very little words at all in the game and nothing like cutscenes either. A lot of the game is going through this creepy house, putting together cryptic abstract clues to progress, and going through little scenarios that have some variety to them. As the game has very few words, you need to essentially pay attention to visual and audio clues. The game is not really hand-holdy at all, which does sometimes lead to confusion in what to do, but I managed to get through all the puzzles in the first half after being a bit observant and experimenting with things.
It's actually pretty solid and I think it's without a doubt worth the price. If you don't mind the simple graphics and some cryptic puzzles, you may even find yourself enjoying it. My only real critiques so far is that there are a few points where there's odd invisible walls, these are rare thankfully but they're a bit immersion breaking and I think they could've come up with a better excuse in many cases why you can't go that way. Also about a third of the way in the game there's a certain mechanic for a section which is a bit sloggish, but this is minor.
The game not really explaining anything to you is both a pro and con, on one side not knowing and uncertainty do play into the horror a bit, but on the other there was one moment I obtained an item and didn't understand how to make it work and was stumped for five minutes walking around only to discover to make it work you need to HOLD the mouse button rather than click it, which wasn't immediately obvious or ever explained. On the opposite end, not knowing how effective combat options are and needing to experiment does lead to a good kinda' uncertainty, or doing things in game having weird results and you having no idea if you're doing the right thing or triggering something bad does play into the horror.
Very solid little game, I recommend it. May update my review a bit once I've finished it.
