DANGEROUS AND ACTION PACKED. I DON'T LIKE IT BEING SO DARK BUT THAT DOES INCREASE THE SUSPENCE.
good I don't know why people hate it.
Good horror/fps game. Much different from other Doom entries but awesome in its own right.
very fun game :)
make sure you adjust config file to fit your resolution
action packed, keep your room lights off and immerse yourself
For me totally worth to play in 2025, it is like lost gem, slow paced dreadful game, no map low ammo, pure atmosphere with great ambient sounds. Play this rather than bfg version and of course on hardest difficulty. No map no shiny arrows where to go, you will train your brain a lot. Nowaday games are like automated ride... the doom 3 is different from other dooms and other games and of course it is for pure old school gaming.
This part of the game is outdated for 2025. It is unpleasant to play. If you want to enjoy the game "DOOM", play later versions.
Great game with graphics that still look good...more or less. The slow build up is great the first time, but can get tedious. The environments tend to blend together, I really wish there were more Hell areas. Sound is amazing, music is hardly there other than the opening theme. Weapons feel great, except for the Shotgun. It's basically a melee weapon the spread is so bad. I recommend modding it so the spread is better. It turns the Shotgun into a viable mid-range weapon, rather than one that is useless unless it's shoved directly up a enemies butthole.
This game is GREAT when you don't have someone bitching in your ears about how "horror doesn't belong in Doom!".
Also, the flashlight is actually good. I actually like a lot of things people had bugs up their asses about for some reason with this game. That shotgun's 50/50 spread is kinda bullshit though, and the viewpunch on damage is awful, especially with hitscan enemies like the Mars Security zombiemen. Still, the game is almost perfect to me.
When you get the BFG Edition, you get this as well iirc. PLAY THIS VERSION INSTEAD, because BFG Edition fucks up some of the character models, removes gun muzzleflash and energy lighting, brightens areas, and raises the ammo to a coddling amount. I like BFG Edition's textures way more, but good grief I really don't like it when the trade-off is attempted erasure of the game's horror tone because of pandering.
Doom 3 is a great experience to be played in its original form. The benefits of the BFG edition are great but there is something awesome about playing this game the way it was intended.
In the beginning, I was amazed. The constant low light, the permanent whirring and hissing of the industrial machinery around me, the flickering. It made me queasy. It made me open every door very carefully and in a crouching stance, pointing my flash light in every corner and anxiously listening for monster sounds before stepping inside. I thought the game had created the right atmosphere for a horror game. But unfortunately that impression wears off fast, because the monster encounters are extremely repetitive and soon become predictable. Most of the levels are also very similar to each other.
Having been used to Doom 1 & 2, the constant ammo starvation, low firepower, small magazines, slow shooting, slow reloading, slow weapon switching, incompatible ammo (no weapon can share ammo with another weapon), no auto-reloading stand out and ensure that you will never experience a spray-and-pray-session against 2 dozen enemies like you had been used to from Doom 1 & 2. Doom 3 just isn't that kind of game. It's slow and methodical, with much of the time spent worrying about ammo. And also: The iconic shotgun has been nerfed to a glorified cudgel. Most of the monsters are useless as ranged attackers, but are extremely powerful in melee.
its a great shooting game quite dark with some goulish monsters,it makes you jump sometimes
The classic Doom 3 from 2004 is an absolute must play in 2025, and anyone that hasn't played it needs to try it. The BFG edition just doesn't have the same feel as the original. With the help of a few mods from Moddb, 4gb patch, and fiddling with the .ini file I'm fragging demons like it's '05 all over again at a silky smooth 4k 60 fps with updated textures.
Doom 3 is a unique game in the franchise in that it starts as an almost survival-horror experience, with limited visibility, weapons and ammunition. I think the unique atmosphere this game builds makes it well worth the money you'll pay for it nowadays. I would recommend the original with an .ini resolution edit rather than playing the BFG Edition. The BFG Edition makes some baffling changes such as allowing you to have the flashlight out at the same time as weapons, decreasing the enemies that spawn, and greatly increasing ammunition. After having played through this game for the first time before making this review on the hardest difficulty available, I can say that none of these changes were necessary. In fact, I would say that the changes made by the BFG Edition are actively detrimental to the overall experience.
The game eventually shifts into a more traditional shooter around the halfway mark and by this time you will feel as if you've earned the power fantasy. Most every gun felt good to use with two notable exceptions. The pisol and the shotgun have issues. The pistol is insanely weak, thus you'll likely discard it as soon as you pick up the shotgun. My own idea for a fix wouldn't be to increase the damage, but would instead be to allow you to wield the pistol and have your flashlight out at the same time, giving it some utility. This may seem ironic based upon my comments above regarding the BFG Edition, but I think it's a sensible change that would not effect too much in the early game. As soon as you want to swap to a weapon that can actually kill most enemies, you'd have to forgo the flashlight. Secondly, the shotgun in this game seems to have a completely random hitscan spread. It's possible to fire point blank at an enemy with your crosshair focused at their midsection and have the pellets form an outline around the target, missing it entirely. This could easily be fixed by tightening the spread of shots.
While not as good as the other games in this series, Doom 3 is still absolutely worth playing!
This game is just not good. And I don't mean as a Doom game, I mean even as a horror game.
Firstly, it's a horror game, but with no tension. The only thing it has is jump scares.
And the thing is, Plutonia has jump scares too, but in that game, you had to be skilled to avoid it, here the game does not have the mechanics that allow you to be skilled.
For example, early in the game, you get attacked at the end of a level, by a bunch of these Spider-like enemies.
But because your movement speed sucks, and your gun needs to reload, no matter what, you'll take damage.
But you'll probably be at full health, so you won't die.
Its a game that's not really difficult, but it just has forced sections with unavoidable pain.
Its atmosphere also does not hold up. Dark corridors dark and are spooky? That's it?
Half Life 2 came 3 months after this and it's such a better package it's not even close.
The gameplay is fast and responsive, the physics is better, the facial animations aren't even on the same planet, and think about what's going on in HL2 is much more scary than anything going on in Doom 3.
Doom 3 is like a bad horror movie, which has got exactly one trick up its sleeve - jump scares.
Everything else about this is just awful.
I'm not finishing this game.
The fact you have to switch between the flashlight to see and your gun to shoot adds a lot of tension by itself.
I've heard this game back then had very divided opinions: on one hand it was considered a good and original reboot for Doom, but on the other hand people criticized it and considered the worst Doom of all. It is the worst Doom? I wouldn't say that. Maybe the "most different Doom", but it's not a trash game.
Typical Doom plot: you play as the Doomguy, a marine sent to Mars where the UAC experiments and develops technology. However, this experiments lead to the instalations turning into hell, where demons attack the scientists and soldiers in the base. Just like the original Doom game.
Now, instead of shooting and killing rapidly, the game turns more paused and slow, adding horror elements. And this is the part that people criticized: it gives a different experience but not just like the classic Doom games. Personally I enjoyed it, despite expecting more frenetic violence.
Visually I have to say it aged... mediocrely. It uses the same engine as Quake 4, a game released a year later but with better visuals. I feel the models and scenario look like plastic toys.
Instead of a metal-based soundtrack, in Doom 3 iD Software used a more horror-based OST, just like a movie. Gives more inmersion to the game, but I understand that many players didn't approved this coming from games with rock and heavy metal songs playing on the background while destroying zombies and demons.
Sadly the game is not avaiable any more on Steam, but you have the BFG (remastered) Edition, which I will play and leave review about it.
So, should you play it? Depends on what are you expecting. If you expect a frenetic shooter like the previous Doom games, you might get dissapointed. If you are expecting a good shooter with a horror ambience then you might get delighted
I first played this game 20 years ago and it was a huge deal that time; My PC couldn't run it like it should, but It was amazing to experience it! Finishing it again using the D3HDPack mod brought all those nostalgic memories back. Highly recommended!
People diss this game for sucking but it's actually a lot of fun. It's just a weird retelling of doom 1.
This game would have made more sense as a prequel rather than "3", Doom 64 Is true doom 3 for a reason, but, yeah, the game Is pretty fun and spooky, and I prefer the og version from the BFG edition
Shittest doom game by far. The only challenge is having to put your torch away so you can use a gun then proceed to shoot blindly in the dark half the time. Half way in and I'm legit over it.
Pay no mind to my time played. I revisited Doom 3 with the dhewm 3 sourceport and an HD texture pack that made it sing. Aside from visual upgrades, I wanted a vanilla experience to reassess a game that I hadn't played in 20+ years.
I would say this game aged extremely well. The exaggerated lighting and shadows give it a distinct high contrast atmosphere that pairs well with an HDR monitor. The gameplay has a grounded feel, while also still delivering a pressure cooker, high octane vibe due to intense ambushes and tuned up monsters. I'd recommend experienced FPSers choose the Veteran difficulty. Also, spatial sound (preferably headphones) is a must.
id Software boldly reimagined the original Doom with this game, and they somehow managed to not blow it. The newly designed monsters have a nice alien aesthetic, pairing well with their varied attack designs. Some of the animations look a little goofy (like the imp walking animation) but otherwise there isn't much to complain about. Weapons are nicely balanced, even if the machine gun sounds a bit weak and the shotgun has an infamous erratic spread.
I'm glad this game held up so well because I am a huge Doom franchise fan. I feel Doom 3 has maybe been left behind as a bit of a middle child between classic Doom and nuDoom, so hopefully it'll have its renaissance one day. The graphics remain stunning, especially with fan-made enhancements. The sound design blows many games out of the water that come out these days.
Things I loved: audiovisual presentation is a home run, tactical combat situations maintain good variety, the horror emphasis works extremely well regardless of the bombastic action
Could have been better: the middle levels of this game drag because you're mostly in the same environments, enemy ambushes become easy to call out ahead of time because they're pretty consistent, NO SUPER SHOTGUN
I haven't played the BFG Edition but I understand it changes quite a lot about the original game, which irks me. Doom 3 is really a beautiful game and deserves to be experienced on its terms, even if you have to swap to the flashlight every once in a while. The design remains impeccable.
i play this for its atmosphere and horror vibes mostly but it still has those rip and tear moments i love from DOOM... just more subdued.
Time has not been kind to this game, and a lot of people seem to vilify it unfairly. I think that's a damn shame, because Doom 3 is genuinely a great game. However, it's not a great DOOM game.
And why's that?
Firstly, the core gameplay is completely opposite of other Doom games. You're not ripping and tearing with reckless abandon. Instead, you're traversing a fallen base, trying to stay alive against the onslaught of demons. The weapons are slower, YOU'RE slower, and (generally) you won't face a million demons at once. So, overall, if you want to play Doom, you're better off playing pretty much any other Doom game.
However, if you're able to separate this game from the franchise, you'll find a hidden gem. The environmental storytelling in this game is far ahead of its peers, and if you're anything like me, you'll find yourself immersed completely in the setting.
After cooling down and remembering about the game I have some conflicted feelings about it. Now I know more than ever why this sht is so polemic. First of all, the criticism I had in my first review is the same, it has not changed, but I feel despite all the bad there is some enjoyment to have. Is something you have to try yourself to see if you like it. I think it has a lot of good ideas and passion, but also a great quantity of problems. It is worth at least a try. I will leave below my original review where I was fuming lol
Original review:
I know this game was really controversial due to the fact it was different from the previous Dooms, but I personally did not mind that, in fact, I was enjoying it a lot. The atmosphere of the game was quite decent and I really liked the survival horror aspects of it. However, the game quickly turns into a repetitive mess, most of the levels look the same, it spams a lot of bullet sponge enemies from all places to the point its no longer fun, but a chore. The worst of it was Hell and afterwards, the fact they take all your weapons and never gave them back was plain stupid. I tried to like this game a lot, but in the end could not do it.
The original, SUPERIOR version of DOOM 3, with its infamous flashlight mechanic, pitch black shadows, crisper visuals and heightened difficulty.
My only caveats would be the way your vision jumps as you take damage, which is really obnoxious when fighting hitscanners. Also, for whatever reason, when acquiring a new PDA hitting TAB doesn't bring up the new emails and user data, you still have to navigate to it.
Minor inconveniences. This game was fairly divisive among the DOOM community for not reinventing the wheel, but it's aged quite well in my opinion. Obvious similarities were drawn with its major competition, Half-Life 2, and flame-wars frequently broke out in the forums over which was better. They are both decent overall, but I feel like DOOM 3 was the less disappointing of the two.
I have fond memories of playing this alone in the dark in my dorm room back in the day... If you let it, the presentation here will absolutely get under your skin. The sound design in particular is worthy of mention; DOOM 3 has some of the most stunning ambient music ever put in a game.
8/10
Old school type of game. Highly recommended! Scares the living crap out of me. I wish modern games would be more like this. Be sure to edit the doom config file to get a decent resolution.
Half of this game's horror and difficulty come from enemies jumping from corners and spawning behind you and getting of cheap hits.
There is nothing really wrong with this game, its probably my favorite out of all the Doom games, it starts of very grounded before letting you really go about a ruining Demon's days. Lighting in this game is fantastic, with your weapons producing light, especelly the Plasma gun, its just so cool.
And then you deal with like 50 imps that either jump at you when you open a door or spawn right behind you, like the ammount that happens is stupid. Granted in other doom games enemies can also spawn behind you, but in lets say Doom 2016 when an enemy spawns behind you, you are probably on the other side of the room killing something else, here as you walk or just fight 2 demons, suddenly someone is behind you, and remember that i wrote how the game is grounded, you are not jumping and hopping around rooms like a mad man, you are just going around a corner and suddenly you have a demon in your face while fighting someone else. Its worse with Marines since they have hit scan weapons and their shotguns are very accurate, easily taking you health away. Otherwise the game is not that tough, so it just makes up its difficulty by constantly annoying you.
But game's fun and atmosphere more than makes up for it, only thing really kinda being of is multiplayer. Older games had co op and versus modes, here you just have versus modes, which are fine but then you look at the Xbox version with full campaign co op and it just seems kinda weird.
I think this is an underrated and overhated doom game. it is way different to every other game, but thats why i like it. everyone complains that the torch is too awkward.
1) builds atmosphere and difficulty
2)just play BFG edition
'oh but the shotgun is bad'
its a shotgun, in a video game. what do you expect. short range, high damage. just cry about it :/
great doom game tho
This game stumbled so Doom 2016 could sprint. Where to begin? I've been putting off playing this one for a couple of years because of the bad things I've heard about it, and having now played it, my fears were confirmed. This game is a burden. You've heard it before, but it requires repetition. The workhorse shotgun, a staple of iD games, is an embarrassment in this game, dealing pitiful damage everywhere except when shoved down the enemy's throat. Most of the other guns look and shoot decently, but the sound design for the most part is lacking, making a plurality of the weapons very underwhelming. The flashlight and darkness mechanics are clunky and boring. The enemies are bullet sponges and have very poorly telegraphed attacks to the point where you have less than a second to react when you open a door and an imp leaps at you, disorienting you with the absurdly strong camera shake from melee attacks. I'm not even trying to view this as a Doom game, but as a general FPS. There are countless game design sins being committed here.
Now to be fair, there are some very good aspects of this game that I must address. The visuals, when not obscured by the ever-present darkness, are terrific even to this day. I love the early 2000s Y2K futurism aesthetic being featured prominently here. The main theme to Doom 3 composed by Chris Vrenna is the best piece of music in the whole franchise. The hell segments of this game are quite creative and are very fun to play through as a nice change of pace. The couple of times when you get your hands on a berserk powerup are probably my favorite execution of this ability in theory, with the screen getting shaky and bloodcurdling screams ripping out of the player character as he punches his enemies into meaty chunks, unable to control his rage. Good stuff. I'd have to say I enjoyed the last quarter of the game. This part truly hearkens back to the true Doom formula of fast paced demon slaughter.
Overall, this is what happens when a vision is lost. John Carmack and John Romero need each other to balance themselves out. Doom 3 is iD with only Carmack. A technically impressive and flashy tech demo with abysmal gameplay and little to no "cool" factor.
Even after twenty years, there has not been any game that is even closely akin to DOOM 3, which I regard as one of the greatest games of all time. And to be frank, it was my introduction to DOOM back then; the previous installments before it didn't interest me — I found them to be lame and still do. Anyhow. I was drawn towards this game's graphics, the overall gameplay, and especially the sound design. As I got older, the story in the PDAs started to intrigue me. Furthermore, I slowed down to listen what the NPCs had to say.
DOOM 3 may not be as fast-paced as Eternal (or Eternal's prototype 2016), and yet both of them are my favorites. 2016 is just a prototype to Eternal—in the gameplay aspect; apart from that, it has a great soundtrack and a decent story coupled with intriguing Codex entries. DOOM 3 would have benefited greatly from the Codex entries, considering that there is no Hell-lore or information about the demons that I wanted to know so very much indeed.
And I want to make something clear, if it wasn't common knowledge already. DOOM 3 has no connection to other DOOM games. It's as if the previous games before it never happened. The Soul Cube in 2016 is just an amusing easter egg, and its capabilities are diminished to the point of being useful... only as a paperweight. In the canon timeline DOOMguy escaped—or was set loose—from Hell after the events of 64, and thus landing on Argent D'Nur, homeworld of the Night Sentinels. Now, back to the review.
DOOM 3 nails the atmospheric horror outstandingly, and you get the feeling from the get-go that something is not right with the UAC. It builds up to the Hell invasion nicely, far better than the initial Necromorph encounter in the original Dead Space — it shot its load prematurely. Still, the original Dead Space is one of my favorites! Although I get much more terrified when I'm playing the game from first-person perspective.
I really like that there is this detective aspect in the game (sort of), when using the PDA and the flashlight; investigating just what the Hell happened on Mars. PDA is a useful device in the game. Sadly, no Hell-lore, as mentioned previously. And the flashlight creates tension when switching from it to the shotgun (for example) in a dark place, and then back to it when all other lights have gone out. Also, DOOM 3 wouldn't be a great atmospheric horror-shooter if a flashlight was somehow jammed inside the armor, and being able to use it and the weapons at the same time; certainly not if the environments are more brighter than before!
All of the guns are awesome. Just to name a few. Pistol is quite powerful. Shotgun for up-close and personal. Only one shot is needed for an Imp, for instance. I can't imagine using a shotgun as some kind of a sniper rifle! The Chain Gun is an absolute beast (far better than in Eternal), obliterating stronger demons in short order. And I love the reload animations and the sounds accompanying them. Grenades are great as well! Dealing massive damage, and exploding on contact. It can also be cooked for tactical instances, so be careful with the timing.
Sentry Bots are just adorable! Just be mindful in the heat of action, so you don't end up being in their line of fire.
I just gotta say that the demon designs are superb! My personal favorites are: the Z-Secs and also their voices; Imps have the best design out of all DOOM games; Maggots are simply phenomenal; the Mancubi have some relation to Cthulhu and their voices sound so eerie; and especially the Tentacle Commandos. Oh, and of course, the Hell Knights!
Of all the soundtracks, one stood out the most (the main theme and the Arrival on Mars are also great): when Campbell is hunting for Sarge, armed with the almighty BFG. I would like to listen to a longer mix. And Campbell's seriousness always manages to get a chuckle out of me! I love it!
There was once a second villain, besides Dr. Betruger, named General Hayden—in the original DOOM 3. Some of his doings were imparted to Betruger, specifically the meeting with a very different Counselor Swann (but still a good guy in the end), and then later on casting some demonic magic on some hapless marine, turning him into a Tentacle Commando. Which reminded me of what happened to Paxton Fettel in the first F.E.A.R. game. He wasn't the main villain, originally. And there were three clone prototypes. The Eldest whose reflexes are totally off the charts, and who can see through other people's eyes into their mind. Fettel was a failure who served as an interrogator (by eating the flesh of his victims to steal their thoughts). And the third, named Conrad Krieg, was the perfect soldier. Krieg was ultimately combined with Fettel very literally, which is represented visually only by his outfit. Now, there are only two clone prototypes in F.E.A.R., but I digress. Hayden was supposed to be the boss in Hell. He was also the catalyst for Kelly's (Sarge's) downfall. There is some commentary, concerning Kelly's transformation process which I would've liked to see for real, that Kelly was somehow "crucified to a demon that was in turn sewn onto a tank. The Sabaoth uses Sarge's military training to benefit Hell's siege on humanity, making him both Judas and Christ." Wicked. But it was then "lost in translation", unfortunately.
The vanilla DOOM 3 is not optimized for modern computers or for higher resolutions, so I highly recommend using the Redux mod when playing this an amazing game!
This game isn't a traditional Doom game it's still a good game despite that Half Life 2 hurt its popularity at the time.
Good game. One of the few horror - shooters, and definitely not the worst one. Scared the shit out of me. But boss fights are boring and mostly random. There is no music during these fights also. I've played DHEWM3 + Redux (that's why I have only several minutes of playtime) and enjoyed them, especially when I've loaded RoE DLC without the latter one, instantly went 20 years back
I finally got around to playing this for the first time and let me just say, what a masterpiece this game is. Not only did id Software take a risk and steer away from their typical game design, but also create a game that's scary, action-packed and fantastic at the same time.
Weapons felt great, with the exception of the shotgun because of that freaking spread (point-blank is the best way to go with this bad boy) and I LOVE THE PLASMA GUN! This is by far, the best iteration of the plasma gun out of ALL the games. Maybe The Dark Ages will bring us something sick, but the VFX, SFX and animations on this thing are top notch. I purposely shot a bullet every now and then just so I can hear that amazing charge sound whenever the cell goes in. It's like the M1 Garand ping, but the futuristic version.
Level design is top notch from top to bottom, didn't encounter any issues and the tight spaces play well with its survival horror theme. Didn't mind the whole read PDAs to get codes and what not, majority of the time they give you the code in the same room you found it in, which is nice
I've seen a lot of complaints about the handheld flashlight, which is changed in the BFG edition, but personally, I loved it. It created moments where I'd pull it out in dark areas to either scan my surroundings or scavenge for supplies, knowing that I won't have a weapon out while I'm doing it. The swap out time isn't that bad either. I'm not sure why this is such a big deal for some people, it adds more to the tension
Movement is another topic, but is built to be a lot slower and more methodical because of the level design. I learnt mid-game that you can sprint and fire at the same time, handy for fighting the big demons whenever you encounter one of them
Game looked incredible back then, still does now. Granted, it lacks certain resolutions, which can thankfully be fixed by downloading a source port (dhewm3 is what I used and is regarded as the best port, keeps everything vanilla as well). I also downloaded D3HDP, a high-quality texture pack that upscales and increases and resolution on everything without changing the look and feel of the game
Wider mod availability, a LOT more than what the BFG edition offers. For those wanting more out of this game, mod the OG version. God will thank you
I freaking enjoyed this game way more than I thought I would, and absolutely recommend it to anyone who wants a good old-fashioned horror FPS. I hope that after Dark Ages, id considers going back to this style of game. Did I forget to mention this game came out the same year as Half-Life 2 and Halo 2?
As a kid, i thought this game was just the boring version of Doom.
Now, as a young adult, i think this is one of the best games i've played in recent memory.
Doom 3 is not only a great horror FPS game, but also probably one of my favorite games that came from the 2000s. The Graphics and Sound are superb, the gameplay is a modernized take of the original 1993 formula, slow paced yet packing a punch, the setting, details, characters and story were unexpectedly quite memorable, good and very deeply written, and the overall presentation, legacy, and uniqueness this game brings to the table is something i've never seen before in a game from 2004. HL2 is nowhere near close to being this special feeling,
My only gripe with the game nowadays is that it's hard to get into. Tons of mods to download, things to fix, and temptations of trying the BFG edition to avoid.
That being said, i still think this game is amazing, and it will forever be one of the most unique sequels to game ever. High recommend to doom fans and game fans in-general. I'm suprised i got to enjoy it as a Christian.
doom 3 is often sean as the black sheep of the series with a more of a slower paced to combat and higher emphasis on the horror, atmosphere, and story compared to the over game that are complete 180s to this game but that what makes it great
I've been making my way through all of the Doom games & finally got to 3, and boy what a switch up. This game plays much slower, makes use out of a flashlight mechanic that doesn't allow you to aim a gun while checking dark corridors, and is filled with jump scares. The graphics are dated, but were impressive at the time of release. On par with Half-Life 2, with great lighting, I'm sure it was impressive at the time.
The game is fun, the DLC is great. Definitely worth recommending, though I know fans haven't fully figured out just where to put this game in the timeline. It's either a reboot, a different character, or a different timeline/universe. Whatever it is, it is fun, give it a shot!
i know this game has its fans but after playing every other doom game, this is the obvious lowlight. i don't know why they tried to make it horror, it's not particularly scary or atmospheric and just ends up making the combat feel kinda bad. pacing is pretty terrible, lots of the levels look the same and i found myself wondering when it was gonna end after i was about halfway through the game. it's kind of a neat game to look back on, but actually playing it isn't very fun.
the best DOOM game ever made, maybe par DOOM 64. platinumed it on ps, worth playing.
It's a classic game but definitely a departure from DOOM. Trades boom boom for atmosphere. Flashlight is love/hate.
Spooky Doom. Play with no HUD....And its terrifying.
After editing the shotgun's config file to reduce the spread by a factor of 3, the game was pretty fun
Great so far, it's similar to F.E.A.R. in terms of graphics and atmosphere. It is more horror focused than the other doom games. I would recommend playing if you are in to games like that.
Overall a good time. Good atmosphere, especially in the hell segments. Bosses suck
The worst doom game by far. Doom 3 didn't age well in the slightest, I'm also willing to bet it wasn't even inventive for it's time as well. Halo 2 and Half-life 2 were only going to be released 3 months after doom 3 and with games like system shock 2 already existing, this game was dated at release. This game is so painfully fucking long for no logical reason. The enemies are cheap and predictable, downright bullet sponges at times. The atmosphere was stale and uninspiring after the first 5 levels. No auto saving to be heard of as well, which I wouldn't have a problem with if the FUCKING LEVELS WEREN'T SO FUCKING LONG. Filler after filler with this game. I will say the horror aspect is what shines here but that's it, even then, it's gets rather stale and obnoxious since, like I said, the enemies get rather predictable. The story will make you pull out instagram reels during the cutscenes. The shotgun was a joy to play with however, my favorite out of the whole series. I will appreciate it for branching out, but the doom formula wasn't in need of this, could've just been a spin-off for half the price at it's time of release. Please save your $4 and time and just watch analysis of this game, you are not missing much. I now see why people despise this game.
This game is a gem.
Some people hate on it because it didn't stay "true" to the originals. But most people love it for what it proposed and delivered.
In any case, I love the originals, love 2016 and Eternal as well.
BUT I WOULD ALSO LOVE A NEW DOOM TAKE LIKE THIS ONE.
One of my all time favourites - 10/10
+Interest dark sci-fi setting
+Eerie atmosphere
+Beautiful stage design
+Graphics, lighting system is hella impressive for its time
-Have to fiddle with config files to get the game to run on modern resolutions
-Shotgun cant hit any more than a meter away
it's not the most popular of the doom games, it's not the most remembered, it's often referred to as the "black sheep" of the series, but it still kicks ass, and i recommend you play it.
although if you are a huge fan of shotguns in video games then maybe this game isn't for you
This is the game that introduced me to the DOOM franchise. Some fans consider DOOM 3 to be the franchise's "black sheep." When developing this game, id Software took a different approach, turning it into a survival-horror game rather than the run-and-gun style that most fans are familiar with and enjoy. I honestly love the approach they took. It makes me wish id Software would explore the franchise's darker, horror aspects more.
If you're going to play this game, I recommend sticking with the original rather than the BFG Edition. The BFG Edition includes many gameplay and graphical changes that most players consider to be downgrades. The original is also the most mod-compatible, with numerous overhaul mods that improve the game's appearance, sound, and gameplay over the BFG Edition.
has no victorian villager violence
(literal coolest thing ever)
this fucking sucks actually
