You gotta be shitting me. Less than half an hour of repetitive, recycled game play. Don't even look in the direction of this game.
It's okay. It has a Megaman and Contra vibe to it and it is incredibly short!
The controls are fine and the gameplay is fluid while the animations and sprites are pretty cool but again waaay too short!
Half of my playtime was apparently spent in double speed. I went to the store page to leave this review when the trailer started playing and it showed the game running slower than it was on my computer. I have such a hard time calling this a "game" when it seems far more like a tech demo, especially since the executable file self-extracts every time you run the game. There's achievements for going deathless and even damage-less but, even if you can get this to run at the correct speed, the enemy spawns and bullets are really difficult to dodge. It feels like this game is trying to be some mixture of Contra (bullet hell) with Mega Man (accurate jumping) but failed at both. I don't recommend buying this, not even when it goes for sale under a dollar. Spend your time somewhere else.
Another retro style run and gun game that I thought was great fun, really well done and very playable. If this was an Amiga game back in the day, it would probably have been my favourite. Got to have the time for a run through though. No save or resume in this?
So Gun Crazy is just fine short, very short run n' gun game that is really no note worthy.
The music is fine, viusals are annoying and their only purpose is to mess you up by covering your screen. Level design is simple, there are two levels where you go right to kill a boss and two where you stand in place and shot everything around you. Half of the bosses are ok.
This game is just bland, you could be playing anything else and having just as much fun and more.
It wants to be Gunstar Heroes or even Alien Soldier, but it isn't there.
Readability is awful and my biggest issue. There's so much visual noise with every kill I'm taking hits from enemies and more often bullets that I'm losing in all the coins that burst out of every enemy. Looks and sound are indeed a high point but it just makes me want to play one of the aforementioned games again instead of spending my time with Gun Crazy. There are three shot buttons mapped but only one dash and it's a face button. No rebinding controls through the game.
Hard pass for me. Looks good, sounds good, makes me want to play the games it draws from instead.
Gun Crazy is a good choice for those who like challenges, achievements, and short gameplays coupled with a high replay factor. For those who expect a longer game or a story to follow, you won't find it here. The game is very short and with few challenges, if you are an experienced achievements hunter in this style of game, you will do everything in a short time. If that's not your style of play, you won't find much that you like here (apart from the nice pixel art). Game for specific players, but competent in everything it proposes.
Some reviews say this is a difficult game, but my first run using one credit was completed within twenty five minutes. My second play through I only lost one life. It was only longer because I stopped to eat lunch in the middle of it.
The first level has three bosses, but each successive stage only features one. Each level feels less and less creative than the last. Seems like the developer had loftier plans for this one and just never finished it.
I don't mind dropping a dollar on a game that feels like a prototype, and I definitely enjoyed my time playing Gun Crazy. Such a shame that someone would lay the groundwork for a great game only to drop something below average.
It's good, not great, but good. There are a lot of rough edges, but it's serviceable.
If you're into Gunstar Heroes, this scratches a similar, though single player, itch.
I got it on discount, and I have no regrets. It won't blow you away, but it's a decent game to slam through in a lunch break.
it's really astonishing to me that the average reviews of this game are mixed, Gun Crazy is a really cool arcade-retro like game with diverse maps, graphics and elements with a fair amount of enjoyable music. and to be honest it's price is pretty fair noting (specially in offs it can go to -75%) the amount of content this game provides. most of the game (till the point i'm playing) is a 2D side-scrolling action run n' gun but here comes the diverse gameplay i was talking about (which keeps you entertained) in some levels for example camera stays in a particular spot and no more funny run n' guns ,enemies start copying themselves to thousands units whenever you shoot at them or boss fights start to shoot lots of bullets at you (which reminds me of some bullet hell titles) obvious enough you have to dodge them while trying to eliminate them and it can get some what challenging. a reminder i didn't finished the game yet (i'm losing a lot noob moment) but the boss fights are pretty interesting and their attacking patterns are sometimes creative. personally i like the level designing a lot but you've got to see it for yourself it's pretty subjective to say if your'e going to like it or not. and lastly i really like the game over system, in order to die you should lost your life 3 times then a 'continue?' screen pops up if you decide to continue very nice ! you can do that 3 times and after that it's complete game over you've got to start over again idk why but that somehow tempt me to do more tries. the only thing i find unsatisfying and a little unsettling at fist was the "beep" sound effect of the main menu and i think it really doesn't matter the game is still a delightful experience for me.
Easy to pick up but pretty challenging, SUPER fun, and a short arcade campaign?! Am I in Heaven?! The presentation is flashy, vibrant, and downright awesome. Protag's super cute, and robot/vehicle designs are super cool. Ritual Games gives me hope that maybe there is hope for us indie-loving arcade-obsessed players after all, haha. (It's really affordable too.)
The only thing I can honestly recommend for potential future entries/spiritual successors (or DLC to this entry) is just adding more player skins/customizable protag outfit colors via palette swaps and the ability to make the resolution windowed. (Hell, if we wanna shoot for the stars: online co-op? That's a reach but anything is possible if you believe!) Other than that, dude: this game freakin' rocks. Get it if you like retro arcade stuff, promise you'll have a fun time.
Gun Crazy is a fun game that nails the feel of classic Run 'n Gun games with tight controls, lots of action and good art. It most definitely needs gameplay and technical improvements like having more power ups and stages, or having a proper options menu with actual graphics options such as running the game in windowed mode, but given this game's price a tag these minor issues can be forgiven. Here's hoping the developers make more games in this series with some needed improvements.
A short 20 minute run and gun shooter totally worth the asking price if you are into that sort of thing. Has only three levels but each level sports multiple bosses to keep the fast pace up. Gun Crazy is the prefect game for when you want to just sit down and place something real quick because you are bored waiting for your pizza to come out of the oven.
Gun Crazy isn't a bad game but a few design decisions are holding this back. 1) the screen is puny and it upscaled like crap so ofc there's no window mode in the (lack) of options. 2) sometimes bullets are hard to see with enemies flashing and the 100's of gold dropping from enemies 3) there is no way to change controls 4) they inflate the difficulty by making you start from level 1 after you use up all your 3x3 lives/continues (the games not hard outside issue 1 & 2). i guess they had to make the game last longer with only the 4 levels though after you beat it you can play 1cc mode where it's harder and you don't get continues.
overall its a decent sidescrolling shooter where you'll punch enemies if they are in melee range and you can dash into shots to absorb them as ammo though it is on the easy side but do to the small screen you'll take damage leading to having to restart from scratch.
Terrible.
I thought I would give it a chance despite the mixed reviews because it kind of looked like a slightly scuffed "bleed".
Well let me tell you it is a SUPER scuffed "bleed".
Trust the negative reviews, not good.
All of the games from this developer seem like they are made by people that definitely have the ability to make a good game, but all of their games end up feeling very rushed and not very well put together.
Really fun, very short, and inexpensive run and gun. Ignore the negative reviews, they're trash. Very seriously, trash.
Reminds me of Gunstar Heroes, and a little of Alien Soldier, as far as the visual and sound design of the game go. Gunstar all the way, for gameplay.
All told, it'll take about 30 minutes to play through the game, assuming you get to the end. Then you get the 1cc mode, which cranks up the difficulty, and changes up the background colors some. Maybe the music, too? I have to play again, and compare.
The controls are tight, and the levels, 4 of them, have enough variety to cover you for...a 30 minute game. It's also 44 dollars less than Gunstar was upon its release. (And you can buy that on Steam, as well. Highly recommended!)
This may not be as amazing as Gunstar, but that's mostly due to the lack of levels. It's not a killer fault, however.
The music in this game is absolutely stellar. I've read negative comments on the sfx of the game, but I didn't have any issues with them. Plus, you can volume slide them down, if you just don't want them interfering with the music.
It could use a few more enemies to throw at you, but I just don't have an axe to grind on games that cost 5 dollars, or less, and don't feature 200 enemies.
Also, my play time as of this review is 1.2 hours...on Steam. I have this on Switch, and have spent probably 4 hours playing it there.
So yes, I recommend the game. Bite sized, disposable fun!
If you find yourself agreeing with the negative reviews of this game then you're not after what this game has to offer. If you understand what the negative reviews are saying and it resonates go elsewhere.
If you like a spatial awareness continuous shooting violent run'n'gun blasting with a run-lock button, you'd be hard pressed to find a more relentless alternative.
Gunstar Heroes fans will appreciate the experience for the price.
I bought the game for fun and I liked it.
This is a dynamic retro shooter with slightly more pleasant graphics and normal controls.
The choice of weapons is actually not great ( Only 3 guns to choose from).
And the soundtrack isn't bad either.
I really like this game but it has some flaws keeping it from greatness.
It hits some nostalgic run n' gun notes just right and seems like a graphical mish mash of several of my favorite Sega Genesis/TG16 games. The main heroine reminds me of an amalgamation of Marina from Mischief Makers and Kei from Dirty Pair Flash.
That being said, the game still feels like a WIP and I would have paid more for a more polished end product.
The screen shake while shooting is highly annoying and gave me a slight headache the first time I played the game. I'm not normally sensitive to such things but It bothers me here for whatever odd reason. Screen shaking and giant explosions should be saved for killing the bosses IMO.
Level 4 is a padded SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOG.
The no text main menu isn't very helpful and might confuse some people. Going too minimal isn't always a good thing.
I recommend this game but do know that (unfortunately) this is a classic case of getting what you paid for. I would have gladly paid $20+ for a fully fleshed out and better experience. The dev obviously has the knowledge and chops of what constitutes a great old school run n gun game but was held back by budget and time (assuming, mind you).
I'll come back and add to/edit this review as I play the game more.
Fun and short Arcade run'n gun game.
It can be beaten in under twenty minutes and it isn't as challenging as it seems to think it is, but the game feels good to play and the combat scenarios are varied enough not to get old.
My only complaints are related to the balancing of a specific weapon and some of the audio mixing, which makes some sounds seemingly unaffected by the ingame volume sliders.
Pick it up to support the dev & to do speedruns / not hit runs, otherwise even the small asking price will feel a bit steep.
Gameplay
Gun Crazy is a Run and Gun shoot 'em up game with Bullet Hell elements
The Good
- Controls like a charm
- Simple and intuitive mechanics
- Great pixel art
- Great soundtrack
- Price
Gripes
- Cannot rebind keys! I want the dash to be on one of the shoulder buttons. I find it hard to use the B button on the controller to dash while holing down the X button to shoot and using A to jump
- Cannot shoot directly downwards while jumping
- No variety in bullet shapes fired at you
- The screen only scrolls forward when moving, you cannot track back (though I think this is by design and nothing of importance is missed)
[*] Sometimes the bullets blend too well with the background and it becomes harder to see and avoid them
