the fact that there's so little ammo in the last bossfight makes it insanely tedious and not fun
Game is fun, levels are nice and the weapons are fun to use. The low poly graphics do NOT mean youll get good performance. This game struggles to run on steam deck but works fine on my pc, it does work harder than Id expect it to though.
Gem! Crazy good deal at -80%. Go for it!
A fun boomer shooter with some modern RPG-light elements. The spells are a bit underwhelming but the weapons are all enjoyable to use, especially once you've upgraded them. Still, I think I took out 70% of the enemies with the axe, which, especially after the bloodthirst upgrade (longer range, life leach), is incredibly powerful. Even more so combined with the sprinter perk.
Another great aspect is the variety of enemies in the different worlds, keeping things interesting and tactically challenging. All enemies require different tactics. My favourite is the Yeti, which looks like a proper psycho. The environments look nice but are quite minimalistic; the world mainly consists of Wolfenstein-like blocks, and aside from elevators, there are hardly any height deffirences.
After about 8 hours of killing monsters and hugging walls I completed the game, which is a good length to not overstay its welcome.
7/10
very well polished fps title
super fun shooter, cool classic vibes
Ok game until the final levels and last boss which, if you haven't bought the right perks which are not needed for 99% of the game, then you have no chance and no way of changing your build. Run out of ammo, run out of health and boss spawns endless monsters.
Can see the devs were running out of good ideas by the end, just lots of cheap traps revealing 20x enemies and instant lava deaths. The final boss is so bad it's funny - shame it undermines the entire design philosophy of the game.
Found Episode 1 to be quite easy and decided to increase the difficulty to Hard.
Then it occurred to me that I may already be on Hard: the game doesn't indicate difficulty level.
Decided to start a new file on Hard to compare, but that's not possible: starting a new game deletes previous save data.
So, pretty chill game, some fun to be had but also some serious issues.
Great game to listen to music and slay some things
good game
Boring repetitive must be made by AI.
Chugs at even a few pixel enemies, not very well optimized, no guides or performance fixes... Refund.
A decent game and worth the fairly low asking price. A classic style shooter with a good amount of enemy and weapon variety.
My only gripe is the map design - they're generally small and confusing, causing you to circle back on yourself at random until you wander to the spot you're able to go.
Solid old-school shooting and exploration. The game looks and runs great, and the shooting is impactful and fun. Epic boss fights too.
It's not the longest game in the world, but for a debut indie this is extremely impressive!
Finally was able to complete the achievs, but its really buggy and had to mess with the savefile for that, but finally its over. Now i can say that its a good game.
Really solid 2.5D FPS, with plenty of nice callbacks to its predecessors. Particularly liked the recreation of E1M1 from Quake in the base level :D Fun to play, doesn't overstay its welcome.
An okay retro FPS that borrows heavily from Doom, Wolf 3D, Duke Nukem, Quake, Serious Sam etc.. And you will know by some of the hidden achievements.
I started off really enjoying this game but it quickly became very tedious and uninspiring. The levels are extremely short and there are roughly 70 levels to complete. There are plenty of secrets to look for, but they are way too easy to find and a lot of the levels have most of the secrets near the beginning and all you do really is just spam the spacebar and some secrets require breaking a wall. Not very well thought out. There are 5 chapters which include a castle, frozen land, Egypt, a futuristic city and Hell (Doom cough cough). After you beat a couple of levels per chapter you get sent to your workshop where you can upgrade your weapons, spells and level up stats and perks.
One of the few good things about this game is it has cool enemy design and animations, the weapons are fun to use and the gameplay is very smooth and fast-paced.
The other negatives besides the very short and tedious levels and ugly level design is the music! The music is beyond generic and sometimes songs will overlap and sound mental. Also the game is EXTREMELY EASY! I played on the hardest setting and never died. Most of the bosses didn't even hit me once! This game is just way too easy and you beat most of it by using your sword and pistol. I also found that the spells were useless, except the shield for the final boss.
This barely gets a recommendation, but I got it on sale and there are some positives and it does scratch that old-school shooter itch a bit.
Hopefully the sequel will be much better than this.
Pretty dang fun (if simplistic) up until the final boss fight. I swear OSHA needs to get some railings installed. Besides that, I do wish you were able to get all the upgrades in one playthrough instead of being locked out from trying out the other half.
All that said, loved the combat and designs for all of the enemies. Excited to see how the sequel comes out!
Great little boomer-shooter. Secrets, weapon upgrades, character upgrades, spells and spell upgrades, blood splatter, biomes, bosses and more. What's not to like? Unless you're an achievement hunter, it'll probably take about 6-10 hours tops, but at this price or on sale, it's worth it.
switching weapons on controller takes several seconds between each weapon or does not respond at all... i Tried different controllers and remapped the buttons, it's defniately an issue with the game.
Fun boomer-shooter. I hadn't noticed that you could scroll the weapon upgrades page, so I never upgraded anything besides my pistol and shotgun but still found the game quite easy on hardcore, never losing a life besides twice falling into lava. I'd ramp up the difficulty to make the game more fun, but it's fun as it is, too.
I really wanted to like this game. But I just can't.
- Terrible performance.
- Weapon switching with the mouse wheel reacts inconsistently and laggy, which is extremely bad in combat.
- The tight corridors often don't leave room to properly evade enemy projectiles, and being hit does cost you a lot of health. This combination makes the game difficult for the wrong reasons. At least I can absolutely not enjoy it.
It's rage-inducing, even on easy difficulty. Unbearable. I've tried three times to get into this, over the course of several years. It's just not happening.
However, Project Warlock 2 is shaping up nicely.
It was fun for 1-2 hours. I played on hardcore because I wanted a challenge.
Some negative and positive points:
-
Becomes repetitive pretty quickly.
It doesn't become more difficult as you progress.
I didn't really feel the need of engaging in making a build, I just kept boosting my HP and ran through the maps like it was nothing.
Boss fights were a joke, way too easy.
The secret system was kinda meh, I just ended up spamming space beside the walls to find the secrets. Kinda pointless.
The maps gets pretty boring quickly and you get lost easily.
+
Very nice gameplay. Moving around and killing enemies felt good.
Cool look.
Totally inoffensive retro FPS.
High point was definitely the Egypt portion of the game, everything else was extremely generic. While I wasn't actively NOT having fun, by the end of game, despite only being like 4 hours long I was rushing through the levels because I just kind of wanted the game to end. The dev blatantly runs out of enemy placement ideas at the last few maps and just starts spamming everything all at once as challenge
Not terrible, not great, gets a little tedious at the end, could be worse.
This games good but not great! the in-game music is mega lame and nothing like the steam trailers i thought this game was gonna have a metal asf soundtrack but no no thats not the case at all it has more of retro i dont know what to call it soundtrack but its definitely not heavy metal or even hard rock its just lame! so i turn off the in-game music off and who designed the bats sounds my god their more annoying then the games soundtrack haha jokes aside the actions great its fast paced boomer shooter style with a dose of classic rpg elements i like that you can focus points into stats and weapon upgrades that s#its actually quite good in this game awesome enemy verities and awesome weapon verity too!
Fun old-school style shooter, easily worth the ~$3 I spent. Controls are good and it plays really well on my less-than impressive gaming laptop. Decent amount of content too I still have plenty of playtime left.
Update: After reaching the midpoint of world three I am no longer able to continue. The game freezes when I try to load after pressing continue and it won't let me start a new game either. Real shame as the game was fun.
It was fun, but I was also glad when it was over
You know what I mean?
Hell Yeah
pretty fun and simple boom shoot
Real Interesting.'
XP/Upgrades/Skill + Limited Lifes (If right difficulty.) - Very interesting.'
Old School Gold Style Gameplay, Goodness.
Hard as balls
Metal AF
Cool shooter but in some places it's too complicated and hard to find where to go in the labyrinths.
Definitely closer to OG Wolf than any other game, low ceilings, 90° walls! Great gun sounds, you can run out of lives, and restart the whole episode! I love it! But considering I'm 40 and grew up with Wolf and Blake Stone! I love the Boomers and have played alot of them but this ones pretty high up there!
This is a great retro inspired FPS. Huge arsenal of upgradable weapons and magic, great enemy variety, snappy satisfying combat and a killer soundtrack.
Dangerous Scissors
Cutting for keeps, through massively chunky style sheets, Project Warlock's combat stands out in heaps. With not much lore, you can be sure, to focus on the upgrades purchased in store. Polish the shine, while progressing and confessing, just one more time...
Slashing and dashing, hordes are fasting, on your blood and guts, put out like cigarette butts. Try the hardest, to test your skill, embarrassing your will. The music loops, in scattered poops, while secrets designed, by a coy mind.
The Warlock Hath descended, melee and magic, successfully mended. The price is right, get on with it, and FIGHT!
My friend who I play CS 2 with said if I post a review on this game and it gets 202 likes and 69 Awards that he will buy me a RTX 3060 and 2 Kilos of canned ham. So I'm just gonna leave this here. Help a brotha!
I don't even remember how I got this game, but it was a pleasent surprise! if you want a doom 1 clone with a little bit more spice and character skill customisation then give this a shot. The only thing I found a bit lacking sadly was the music.
It's fun game, keeps me on my toes when I am low health. I like to play it time to time. It easy to pick up after a few days. Simple, Fun, Easy to learn.
Wonderful indie game. Glad I played this game. Had to write this review (cause I forgot to) in response to playing the sequel, which i will write a review for when i finish.
Pretty good
This game is boring.
Gunplay is half time bad half time ok. Enemies have small differences
Levels are visually nice but not all of them are as nice to play
Leveling system is boring
Sounds are okay
This game is like boomer shooters that never developed and stayed in first half of 90s and copying doom 2
It's a good game though it does have problems. First i don't think the lives system is necessary to the game, outside of one time the only times i died were in the last world due to cheap design, that being instant death falls which i always hate instant death as it never feels fair in any game, i was playing on normal. instead i would recommend getting making lives respawns and ever life you get adds a permanent respawn to every level and enemies stay dead on respawn or making it optional without moving to casual or hard. You have to choose student as your first skill, the sooner you get it the better as it's just a free stat upgrade every level. The magic weapon never ended up being all that useful as it's just better to use magic for spells especially the spell that just gives you ammo. I would also suggest separating magic and weapon upgrade points, even if many of the spells aren't useful at all. also i wouldn't make light a spell and you should just have it, i know it's free but it just shouldn't be a spell. A lot of the secrets feel like you just have to rub up and use every wall in the game. There is supposed to be a tell, but some of them don't have it worst the secrets in a secret. i also hate the secrets that are just a bypass to a key door, i often have to get the key anyway and rarely it's to bypass to said key and if i want every secret those are worthless. the secrets that are just shortcuts back to where you needed to go anyway shouldn't be secrets and should just be given to the player. in fact some levels feel like they haphazardly through in secrets without must thought. the other design that sucks is when there is a point of no return as you can't replay a level and would have to restart that section if you want the secrets you've missed. also some secrets have gone off randomly and wouldn't add to my secrets found tally and some would go off when i pushed a button that opened it but i have no clue where it is. one stage said i had 4/5 but every guide says it only has 4 secrets. final thing on secrets is that the last world has a button you can endlessly press to get infinite secrets. speaking of the last world, it felt like it wasn't playtested much at all, prior worlds didn't have instant death pits and was good on preventing such things, add spawners spawn too fast that you have to use a fast firing weapon to kill them or get them before they notice you and for that final boss it started good but became awful when it did what every player would want a final boss to do, become an add spawner, in seriousness that was a terrible idea and made the boss just suck. the game is fun, but on subsequent playthoughts i'll either stop before the final world or only play in stage select. i hope these issues are fixed in the sequel as i got this with the sequel.
It's pretty easy to see this as "Ray-traced Doom" but the game builds its own identity very quickly. Project Warlock is very, very good. The map design is great, the visuals are good, the combat is fun, and the creative design is enjoyable.
There are a lot of games you can call "modernised doom" but this one nails that premise exquisitely. Everything about this style of game is done well: The weapons system allows for choice and variety but never leaves you empty handed or defenseless, the map design has the nonlinearity of Doom with memorable and challenging combat scenarios, the enemies are creatively designed and each one presents something new, and every single kill is satisfying; the animations are perfect. Even the secrets are implemented well.
The two main drawbacks are the bugs (mainly the one where the player is liable to phase through elevator floors) and the sound design, wherein certain enemies have disproportionately and agonisingly loud noises associated with them, to the extent where even a low volume would hurt my ears. Neither issue is prohibitive. I also found some other bugs but they weren't that bad.
Good visuals, good combat, fun gunplay, creative design, good music. A huge recommend for anyone interested in this style of boomer shooters.
All in all a good time. After the first few levels I wasn't sure if I was going to like it but it started to grow on me pretty quickly. It's basically done in the style of classic Doom with a large variety of enemies and bosses. I get the feeling that its designed for speed running based on how quickly you can move around the levels. The only thing I didn't like was the weapon upgrade system. The upgrades themselves are awesome but it locks you in to one of two possible upgrades. I guess to increase replayability but to be honest I doubt I'll revisit this one any time soon. The boss battles start off strong but tbh by the end I was kinda just ready for it to be over with. Whereas some of the enemies are quite interesting and have a variety of abilities they basically move straight at you and attack whenever close enough. Hopefully enemy AI is improved in the sequel.
My eyes, my frigging eyes!!!
Quality boomer shooter. A lot of different mobs. Great trigger time. Shotgun is good.
Get Psyched!
Project Warlock: "8-Bit" Of Fun
7.5/10
This is a pretty fun and mindless shooter where the good luckily out weighs the bad. The game goes hard on the old school retro 8-bit aspect, from the stylized graphics to the groovy soundtrack. I really enjoyed the whole nostalgia aspect mixed with a more modern and responsive control scheme. Its got plenty of weapons to choose from and a fair share of abilities and upgrades to customize your game play. it's pretty much incorporates all the standard tropes from old school boomer shooters. Run & Gun. Pick Up Ammo. And discover hidden areas and treasures. Over all its a pretty enjoyable game loop, but far from perfect.
Switching weapons is broken for both controller and keyboard mouse. There are multiple forms online where both players complain about the unresponsive mechanic. Honestly, that's BS for any game, especially a boomer shooter. It really breaks the game flow. Luckily you can map guns to the d-pad and double stack the buttons which gets the job done, but is still not ideal. With so many people bringing this bug up its a bit pathetic the devs never fixed. It shouldn't have been an issue in the first place.
I also fell off the map a few times cuz of bugs & looking for secret passages is a bit unrewarding and tedious. I never found any clues or indicators that there was a secret around me. Instead, i had to blindly run along side the walls just smashing the interact button until a passage opened. It sucked. It really sucked a lot of the fun out of the game.
Also, I thought the game was pretty easy. I played on "hard" and breezed through pretty much the whole game. I probably only dies 3 or 4 times tbh & I'm not some sweaty gamer. Though, the final boss was challenging and fun. So that's a plus.
Regardless, I'd say this is worth the buy. You can play it in short burst, its entertaining, and pretty short. Its not perfect but it does enough right to create a fun game loop.
this game is really fun, I love the cool weapon upgrade system as well.
Wonderful game
