In three distinct campaign episodes hand-crafted from straight outta the '90s, players will battle through an onslaught of mystical backwater cultists, possessed militants and even darker forces and attempt to discover just what lurks beneath the Earth. Featuring a vast arsenal of badass weaponry including sickles, swords, crossbows, rifles, dual-wielded and double barreled shotguns and incredibly necessary grenade and rocket launchers, DUSK brings unapologetic retro action from start to finish.
In addition to the main campaign, DUSK features an Endless Survival Mode, putting you front and center against wave after wave of merciless enemies.
And for those looking for an extra challenge, DUSK also offers the chance to go head to head online to battle your friends in DUSKWorld arena multiplayer, where darkness hosts the worst of humanity in surprising new ways...

Takes all the boomer shooter elements we know and love, adds modern movement, semi-unique weapons, plenty of nods to fan favorite movies and games. Who doesn't like Dusk? Seriously, tell me...
its quake except it is also doom, but on the other hand, it is its own thing
you get were i'm coming from, right?
I've played a lot of modern "retro fps" games, and to be honest, most of them are complete ass. A lot of them take all the wrong lessons from old boomer shooters, creating games that make you wish you were playing Quake instead. Dusk is by far one of the best modern boomer shooters ever. This game actually understands what makes these old games so fun, and cuts out all the fat so that you can properly enjoy a simple, violent, and atmospheric shooter without getting annoyed or bored.
Apparently I haven’t written a review for this game yet? Lemme fix that.
Dusk is one of the best indie games of all time. On the surface you’ll look at it and think oh it’s another old school shooter and yeah it is, but Dusk knows what you’re thinking and it takes advantage of that thought process and will throw you for a loop as you play. It knows what you expect from this kind of game and at various points will turn the concept on its head and defy expectations. I don’t want to spoil how, but just know that this game is very creative and isn’t just “ANOTHER old school shooter”.
Thats not to say Dusk isn’t an old-school shooter though. It definitely is and it does that exceptionally well. Level design takes center stage here, having some of the most interesting levels I’ve ever seen in an FPS. It starts out pretty standard but as you go along things get weird. All the weapons are satisfying and punchy, my favorite is the dual-wield shotguns that you spin-reload like Arnold in T2. I also really appreciate the pacing here, a lot of throwback FPS games make levels that are obnoxiously long filled with enemies to the point where it seems like filler content. Not here though, everything feels just right and every item, power up, and enemy placement is well thought out and smart.
Yeah, this game is incredible and most importantly “worthy” of your time wink wink. I also highly recommend the “Dusk HD” pack which is technically a free dlc but it updates the models of weapons and enemies and they look fantastic. If you haven’t played this for whatever reason, shame on you and your bloodline
After returning to the game in like months I finally finished the game. This game is a boomer shooter inspired by old games like Doom and others like it. You get keys and navigate the levels to progress to the next level. You get power-ups like faster reloading for guns, a power-up that can make you slow down time when you move, and being able to climb walls to places you couldn't get to before. There are some levels I got stuck on but with navigating through the levels with a bit of time I was able to get through it. You fight bosses that do show the life bar showing how many hits they are taking when you use it. You can dual-wield certain weapons like the shotgun, pistol, and melee weapons, but that's about it. The enemies variety is pretty good like those with chainsaws, cult-like enemies that shoot magic at you, and other enemies that are pretty fun to kill. You can beat the game in under 5 hours If you are pretty good at fps games like this. Best to get it on sale. I give this game a 9 out of 10. I hope my review makes you think twice about getting the game. Have a good day.
I love being able to do a front flip while shotgunning scarecrows and military personal.
the creepy crawly invisible my eyes decieve wendigos and the scp 096 thing is FUCKING ANNOYING.
big johni nater
This was (if I'm remembering right) one of the first of the wave of retro boomer shooters. That might make you think it's a little more generic, a little less creative, than the games that came later.
You'd be wrong.
The level design here is immensely creative and fun - almost like a tour of the best custom Doom/Quake levels. They also manage to avoid a lot of the pitfalls of classic level design (like the over-reliance on mazes) while still feeling believably retro. I really want to say more, but I don't want to spoil some of the cooler sections, so I'll just say: It's great!
The art & environmental design is phenomenal, too. There are some scenic moments in this game that made me gasp out loud (and then hammer the screenshot button). Stuff that I would expect in a Kitty Horrorshow game, not a rambunctious boomer shooter. I never knew quite what to expect when rounding the next corner.
And, naturally, the gameplay is basically fun-in-a-can. It absolutely feels like one of the classic 90s shooters, in a good way - it even has bunny hopping. It's admittedly nothing you haven't seen before, but hey - if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Dusk is already doing plenty of unique stuff elsewhere, so I think keeping the gameplay classic (but very polished) was a good move.
If you like boomer shooters at all, this is a must play.
There really isn't anything I can say that hasn't already been said about DUSK. The levels are consistently well-designed and memorable. The weapons are satisfying and are all quite useful. Not one of them feels useless or out of place. The soundtrack helps to set a good atmosphere (it's also amazing on it's own). Go play it (or get it on sale at the very least). Alsosoap kills anything you throw it at in one hit.
I have not played the game much but the first section of the game was pretty boring but every other level was really fun. I really wish I found this game sooner since it's a cheap, simple and still a fun game.
This game has absolutely blown me out of the water when it comes to expectations. Absolutely play this game if you are a fan of old boomer shooters.
A warning for anyone who wants to play this game.
beat an episode in one sitting, the save system in dusk is broken and 50% of the time will break the games ai
As a fan of all the DOOM games, anything that's inspired by the PS1 era with it's visuals, and horror games, this feels like it was crafted for me for sure. This game is a blast and although it wears it's influences on it's sleeve, this game is awesome and I love everything about it!
Nostalgic, great music, lovely level design. We need more quality games like this one.
I am honestly late for the DUSK train, finally playing it this year (a month ago from writing this). After getting this heavy old school fps kick and playing it 100% I can see why this game is one of true successors of the classics that came before it and this great grimy twist of Blood and Quake.
-The Weapons are addicting to use and almost every weapon has a special use for enemy types and situations.
(The only weapon I personally did not use much was the Sword, for as cool as the gimmick for it was I never had a moment to truly pull it out other than the initial "oh shit a swrd" and used for a level.)
-The level lay outs are fun to traverse, creative combat encounters/scenarios and the secret hunt was rewarding at most and didn't make you feel lost and scratching your'e head.
-The difficulties feel balanced, only dying a handful of times on hard.
Overall a super fun shooter that should be in every shooter/old school fps fans steam collection.
I love DUSK greatly. It's an absolutely excellent FPS game that doesn't get a lot of appreciation nowadays. I think that's sad. Some level concepts here are so interesting and unique. The enemies and stage design all require concentration for different reasons. Mostly because the enemies are predictable but do a lot of damage, even on lower difficulties. And this is probably the fastest run speed in an FPS. Dusk Due must've been an Olympic athlete before becoming a farmer. It makes the game so incredibly fast paced, and the selection of weapons give you so many options in approaching the non-linear, DOOM/90s FPS-like levels. This game isn't just lesser Ultrakill like I thought it would be. They are completely different, being non-linear vs an arena shooter.
Play DUSK. It's great.
Absolute fricking banger. Played it on PC and played DUSK HD on the Deck and I fell in love again! Andrew Hulshult's music didn't hit me that much at first but I always grow to OST slowly, but anyway, I replayed it and now I listen to OST whenever I do some chores or work(out too). In my opinion, the best soundtrack Andrew cooked up even after Doom Eternal, there's just this atmosphere that made DUSK the way it is. I listen to Keepers of The Gate on repeat, absolute banger.
Thank you David for bringing in the HD version because it really enhanced the game for me. I voted Labor of Love.
Very good game. I remember being hyped for it back when it was just a demo when I was in High School. It didn't disappoint, matter of fact it exceeded my expectations. Highly recommend, can't wait for Syzmanski's next game - Butcher's Creek.
DUSK is fantastic! I'd recommend it to anyone who's ever enjoyed a boomer shooter.
The level designs are amazing, and I think the game is super fun when played on "intruder mode." Your weapons are reset at the beginning of every level.
The music is terrific, the visuals are surprisingly inspired at times, the exploration is top notch, and I love the movement.
DUSK mixes demonic, occult aesthetics with lightning fast ultraviolent action. Each level is filled with secret areas to uncover and feels like a unique addition to the adventure. The enemies, environments and weapons are all incredibly well designed and the soundtrack is awesome. Definitely one of the best boomer shooters I've ever played.
High-speed, high-satisfaction gameplay. Feels superfast but never out of your control, it's very finely tuned and simply put - it is fun.
The game has a good reputation. I think it deserves it.
this is one of the best boomer shooters I've played. the guns go bow plink boom poomf and shwing. the bhops go hun hun hun footstep footstep footstep. and it spooky boo .
Level design. That's what this game does really, really well. Everything from enemy placement, weapons, and back tracking the game handles in ways that really surprise and entertain. I'm not even a huge fan of the aesthetic but the level design was so genius. No filler or boring levels. The most imaginative I've seen in a long time. Highly recommend.
this is one of those masterpiece indie games that people are gonna try and imitate for the next 20 years, guarantee. i'm late to dusk so it isn't necessary i write a review-- right now it already boasts nearly 20k reviews, overwhelmingly positive and for great reason. you don't need my review to convince you to buy it, but i have so many good things to say about it and i gotta put them somewhere, i just appreciate it so much i want to throw my insignificant rambling voice into the choir singing its praises lol
- first i just want to appreciate the fact that the dev seems to really care about what he's doing, and prioritizes giving the players the best possible experience to enjoy the game. hell, even the fact there's a free dlc with little development milestones, assets & other goodies is just metal af. then there's even a free download just to make the graphics HD for those who don't like retro graphics, instead of rebranding it as DUSK HD and selling it again at twice the price-- little bonus that it's so cartoonishly opposite most AAA companies, i'm crazy about that. todd howard would vomit. EA would implode if presented with the concept that a whole game can be sold as one thing and dlc's can be free & just enhance the experience. metal.
- this game comes with its own lovable personality unique to anything else i have played. there's some subtle humor sometimes that i loved & it's perfectly self-aware of everything that it is, which is an integral trait to every piece of media i've ever loved the most. it doesn't take itself overly seriously, and there's nuance & depth to most aspects of it. it's not something you feel like a dumbass for loving.
- the music. is so. fucking. good. andrew hulshult brought so much to the overall experience of this game, again and again i was just impressed as fuck with the nuance of the soundtrack. the soundtrack and the choices made in how its used throughout the game-- it accomplishes so much! atmosphere, exposition, and it's just so damn enjoyable. but my favorite thing, & i was so damn stoked listening to it, the soundtrack near the end of the game tying in motifs from other memorable areas in the game & reflecting the journey up to that point was so artfully done, just what a great experience.
- i love the DOS homage, i love the retro graphics, i love the passion and love poured into this game. it honors the classics and tastefully reflects the games that inspired it while maintaining an intense originality that would be difficult to pull off while keeping it convincingly retro.
- the game builds a fantastic atmosphere especially if you play it in the dark with headphones. with the music and ambience, map elements and aesthetic choices, no matter how unbelievable any of it is or how gamey the graphics look, the world you're in takes on a life of its own and a real feeling that is all at once unnerving, creepy, and fascinating. it's dark, brutal & malevolent-- i can't get enough. there's a hopelessness from the start but no matter how doomed anything feels you're still compelled to help the protagonist try.
- i enjoyed all of the maps, i can't think of a single one that flopped for me. it feels like each map was put together with care and intention, there's no superfluous bullshit (unlike my rambling). the secrets are fun to look for and feel rewarding even if the prize is small. hesitating to step around the next corner from beginning to end because the levels maintain enough unpredictability to keep you on edge, with enough familiarity to keep it from being overwhelming. everything in each level is done with purpose whether its a prop set up to fuck with your head, just an uncanny lighting effect to build unease or an environmental piece you can use to your advantage. it didn't fuck around.
- replayability! this is gonna be fun to try and go back thru to find all the secrets, & if you like challenge there are acheivements for several different things on each level. the first time going thru it for me it was important to just play, take it in, and enjoy the atmosphere. having finished all 3 episodes now & still vibing with the gameplay i'm looking forward to trying out intruder mode, finding the secrets i missed, & trying to get the low tech awards.
- it's just so fucking fun. i love the weapons, i get a wicked surge of dopamine every time i shoot something with the super shotgun & i get to see an explosion of blood and chunks of viscera, i love the sounds and feel of each weapon, i still found situations for each one up to the end of the game, none of them got phased out or boring. i just fucking love the super shotgun and the riveter so much i wouldn't change a single thing.
Deliciously simple game play, but very entertaining, and wonderful to interact with.
one of the best modern "boomer shooters" out there. Classic vibes with fast pace action and smooth controls
Really fun gameplay and insanely creepy vibes. Very good
It feels really good to be a boomer going onto a rampage in a secluded village.
the game is good too.
probably the pinnacle of retro shooters. "doom but modern game engine" taken to its logical conclusion without the bloat of modern games.
other games might have more interesting movement or more interlocking combat mechanics, but Dusk in my opinion is the best homage to the true OGs.
i only wish the game had a better autosave feature, i suggest scouring the keybinds for the quicksave hotkey and use it often
fun game that you can feel alot of what its inspired by but still makes all of it its own thing, its really cool how each level changes as you go through it with some very striking visuals.
not as good as the masterpiece that is chop goblins tho.
The theme isn't my cup of tea, but the everything about this game is awesome. There are also custom maps and stuff I haven't touched, so you could definitely get tons of time out of this game.
This is a better experience than the games it's trying to emulate. If Blood met Quake met Hexen met They Hunger you'd have Dusk.
Make sure to pick up the Dusk HD free upgrade; the base game is great but the HD pack feels like that first time you added the high def model pack from Blue Shift to your base Half Life campaign
Great old school feel, very Doom-like. Absolutely love the music and sound effects! I am hooked!!!
Fun gameplay, great level design, cool soundtrack, highly recommended!
you start a bit shy and you go absolutely crazy. And then you get shy again on the dark levels full of surprises
This game requires significant brain usage and will take a long time to beat first time
peak
Holy sh*t this game is good. The music goes hard, the graphics are a blast from the past and the gameplay is fluid. Definite 10/10.
It's a brutal mix between action, horror, and fantasy; but instead of running, hiding, or casting spells and shit, you blow them the hell up and gun them down in glory. I was angry, joyous, and unsettled all at once. Would slaughter demons again. Also you can toss explosive barrels at people.
Dusk is one hell of a FPS. Its a perfect blend of all the good parts of old shooter games molded together into this honestly beautiful and fun game. Blast Sunami or Dystopia while playing endless mode and you honestly have a solid midnight escape.
Excellent level design, bad guys, weapons and "atmosphere", and a touch of whimsy. Even better the second time around on the HD version.
Played a lot of these "boomer shooters" of the last few years. Dusk is one of the best (if not the best!) because everything is top notch here: The movement, shooting mechanics, gun feedback, level design, secrets, story, music, atmosphere... Some of the levels in this game are among the best levels I have seen in any FPS game since Doom (!) (especially in episode 3, just crazy what these guys did there). Of course there are lots of other good boomer shooters out there (Prodeus, Forgive me Father, Dread Templar, Postal Braindead, just to mention a few) but most of them have at least one big downside. Only maybe Amid Evil, Cultic and Hrot come close to Dusk´s overall quality. So Dusk is a mustplay in this genre! Still hoping for a DLC / episode 4!
Indie done right. An awesome Boomershooter through pulpified, intense environments that keep the blood pumping. All the while you keep shedding it. Three episodes. Countless enemies. Plenty of bosses. Lots of secrets. A handful of weapons. One Duskdude.
They say something about staring into the abyss, lest the abyss stare back at you.
Dusk makes you, and Duskdude, tell the Abyss to hold your beer and watch this.
7/10 lot's of fun, much better than og boomer shooter
The game where even the chickens want you dead
This game grabs you, throws you into a blender of blood, bullets, and retro-pixel terror, and somehow makes it fun. Imagine Doom and Quake had a baby who’s really into horror movies and heavy metal—and then fed it pure caffeine. Levels are pure chaos, enemies appear from every shadow, and the only way out is through a hail of shotgun shells and adrenaline. Also, the soundtrack? Absolute fire.
It was somewhat difficult to get into Dusk after playing UltraKill. Comparing the two, Dusk is much less mechanically interesting. That being said, I'm glad I came back, because the level design & campaign are truly special. The descent from campy horror to eldritch nightmare was executed perfectly. Dusk is not revolutionary or boundary-pushing, but it is genre-defining; the perfect example of what it means to be a Retro-FPS (or Boomer Shooter).
DUSK is an exhilarating throwback to the classic first-person shooters of the 1990s, delivering an experience that is both nostalgic and refreshingly modern. Developed by David Szymanski, this indie title expertly captures the fast-paced gameplay, atmospheric design, and creative level architecture that defined the genre while infusing it with contemporary mechanics and flair. With its blend of retro aesthetics and modern sensibilities, DUSK stands out as a remarkable achievement in the indie gaming landscape.
Thrilling Gameplay and Fast-Paced Action
At the core of DUSK is its thrilling gameplay, characterized by lightning-fast movement and intense combat. Players are thrust into a world filled with hordes of enemies, and the game encourages aggressive playstyles that reward quick reflexes and strategic thinking. The arsenal of weapons is diverse and satisfying, ranging from shotguns to explosive crossbows, each feeling impactful and fun to use. The fluidity of the movement mechanics, including dodging and sprinting, allows players to navigate levels with exhilarating speed, making every encounter feel dynamic and engaging.
Intricate Level Design
One of the standout features of DUSK is its meticulously crafted levels. Each environment is a carefully designed maze filled with secrets, hidden paths, and challenging enemies. The level design encourages exploration, rewarding players for their curiosity with hidden items, shortcuts, and lore. The verticality and interconnectedness of the maps add depth to the gameplay, allowing for creative approaches to combat and traversal. The game captures the essence of classic shooters while incorporating modern design principles, resulting in a seamless blend of old and new.
Atmospheric Visuals and Sound Design
Visually, DUSK embraces a retro aesthetic, employing pixel art and voxel graphics that harken back to the golden age of FPS games. The art style is distinctive and charming, creating a unique atmosphere that enhances the overall experience. The environments are rich in detail, with a variety of settings that range from eerie rural landscapes to dark, industrial settings, each contributing to the game’s immersive world.
The sound design complements the visuals beautifully, with an engaging soundtrack that perfectly captures the game’s intense action. The audio effects for weapons and enemy sounds are impactful, further immersing players in the chaotic atmosphere. The combination of visuals and sound creates a compelling experience that draws players into the world of DUSK.
Engaging Story and Lore
While DUSK focuses heavily on gameplay, it also weaves an intriguing narrative that adds context to the action. Players find themselves entangled in a dark and mysterious plot filled with cults, monsters, and bizarre occurrences. The storytelling is delivered through environmental cues, cryptic messages, and atmospheric elements that encourage players to piece together the narrative as they progress. This subtle approach to storytelling enhances the overall immersion and keeps players engaged throughout their journey.
Modding Community and Replayability
The DUSK community is vibrant and passionate, contributing to the game’s longevity through modding and user-generated content. The game’s support for mods allows players to create and share their own levels and experiences, adding a wealth of replayability. This engagement from the community ensures that there’s always something new to explore, keeping the game fresh long after the initial playthrough.
Conclusion
In summary, DUSK is a triumphant homage to the classic first-person shooters that shaped the gaming landscape, skillfully combining nostalgia with modern mechanics and design. Its thrilling gameplay, intricate level design, atmospheric visuals, and engaging narrative create an unforgettable experience that resonates with both longtime fans of the genre and new players alike.
Whether you’re blasting through hordes of enemies, uncovering secrets, or simply enjoying the richly designed environments, DUSK delivers a pulse-pounding adventure that is as satisfying as it is fun. This indie gem stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of classic shooters, and it’s a must-play for anyone seeking an action-packed experience that captures the spirit of gaming’s past while looking boldly toward the future.
I don't even know how to describe this game's goodness. As a metalhead, this game is the best thing that could happen to me. Music is perfect, gameplay is perfect, anything you may think about is great asf. Matter of fact this game ignited my curiosity on certain writer's characters but I will keep my mouth shut for understandable reasons. Long story short what are you waiting for buying this game?
Takes the feeling of the original Quake and speeds things up and provided more variety.
Enjoyable Retro shooter with smooth controls, fun level design, and a fun horror aesthetic.
Fanatastic boomer shooter. Great atmosphere, great weapons, great gibs. Let the chunks fly, baby
This game rules. Very addicting and fast-paced gameplay mixed with its creepy atmosphere, sound design, characters, and overall world, this was definitely worth the play-through. I definitely intend on coming back in the future to unlock more achievements and experience more of the post-campaign content. Very good!
