Описание
Pawn of the Dead differs from the classical chess with its unique mechanic: White pieces get infected into Black (undead) pieces when captured! But do not worry, there's always a solution to win in these asymmetrical levels.
As Leonard the White King, it's your duty to protect White Kingdom against the army of undead. Always nearby you is kingdom's most powerful warrior and your beloved wife, Elona the White Queen. A sinister reflection you ignored all along is awaiting for you, who seeks a resolution beyond revenge.
Game modes
- Campaign Mode with 64 levels, a fantasy story supported with cinematics.
- Random Level Generation Mode with hundreds of procedurally pre-generated levels. You can also play as Black (the infecting side) against AI, or against a friend on the same computer (local multiplayer)
- Classical Chess Mode with regular chess rules and piece placements
- Queen vs Zombies: Fight against an endless army of zombie pawns as White Queen. Every 7 zombies you slay grants you a destructive power of magic.
Easy transition between 3D and 2D.

So mediocre that it hurts...
... it hurts, because as a Chess game PotD has potential... It's all there: nice graphics and animations, good AI, and the premise forming the base (i.e. black pieces aka zombies converting white pieces into zombies as well instead of capturing them) is awesome and intriguing.
But it's all a steaming mess that's just overall painfully mediocre:
- I personally like the graphics, but I have to admit that they're undeniably outdated.
Also, the design choices are pleasantly non-grandiose, but defintely weird... The black pieces are your standard undead and necromancers, but... the white king looks like a poor guy pretending to be king; the white queen wears what I can't call neither elegant nor a simple nightgown; the knights and bishops are just humanoids with horse and elephant heads respectively that look incredibly out of place; and whoever designed the rooks needs to perform a drug test asap, because it seems he's as high as Lewis Carroll was.
- The fluid animations are technically fine, but also very underwhelming and nothing else, and they look like the motion capture was done by a middle school theater workshop. The "special effects" are laughable at best: The white queen can conjure up some mediocre blue flames that are fine... but the rooks shoot barely visible energy beams (instead of crushing the zombies with their stone body or something, why even make them golem-like if they use magic anyway?...) and the bishop's ranged attack is that he just prays and the zombie collapses - that's it, nothing else... no heavenly light or anything... Lazy as fuck.
- The AI is acceptable; hard difficulty is challenging enough... although Chess veterans will definitely not be entertained by this game - it wasn't made for pros. Normal play, classic Chess, works fine for beginners and casual players (and to some extent also for advanced players), but the campaign scenarios and the riddles are simply uninspired, slow, and boring. It's not enough that a game looks okay and that the premise is promising, if the final product doesn't deliver and it plays like goat shit.
- What enraged me the most is that the game lets you choose from several discreetly but boringly designed arenas, but chrashes every single time when you try to load one that you haven't been yet during story mode. Huge oversight and frustrating as fuck!
[*]Last but not least: The undeath mechanic was the only thing I was looking forward to and that I almost didn't find bad, but it forces you to play extremely defensively, even if you're up against nothing but a horde of pawns. It could have worked, the idea wasn't bad... but is was implemented so poorly and shitty that what could've been an interesting game turned out to be boring and mediocre at best.
