For a port of a korean mobile Vanillaware beat 'em up knockoff, this is really not bad. The problem is, this is a port of a korean mobile Vanillaware beat 'em up knockoff. Low-res textures, incorrectly cropped sprites on some of the enemies, endless grinding, repetitive combat. If the dev/publisher cared a little bit more and polished their game further, this could've been a great beat 'em up RPG on Steam, because the combat animations are really well made and satisfying, the equipment/customization system is honestly impressive and the main characters' designs are incredible.
tl;dr Had fun grindin' and stylin' even with the issues of a mobile game ported to PC.
(To play with a PS4 pad: Go to Community Layouts in the Steam Input settings, select "PS4 test")
The Dragon Spear were the friends we made along the way
Ever Wondered what it was like to be a whale on a Mobage game - here you are.
Servers are now officially offline, the game can be played with your own characters that you level up and can do the multiplayer stuff by-yourself.
All Achievements for Multiplayer have been removed - this is now a 100% authentic Offline Mobage game.
Dragon Spear is basically a Korean MMO RPG where you basically clear dungeons. If I remembered, this is actually a port of the mobile version, thus most of the UI appears quite simplistic and catering to the mobile players in a way, with the mouse click showing a touch screen effect. In this game, you can use 6 different characters with varying skills and playstyle. For example, the Mage mainly focus on keep away elemental skills, while the Fighter goes in with her brawling skills. Do note that 3 of the characters need to be purchased though, otherwise by default you can only use the Fighter, Swordsman and Knight.
Basically in this game, you use your regular attack to regen mana and health, while using your skills to nuke your enemies or even buff your allies, pretty simple. You can build up your rage meter to use a super skill, which is usually a really huge nuke. You find gears and equip them, with some gears adding additional effects to certain skills. Some of the better gears, while giving quite some boost to stats, are only craftable based on item drops. Items also have set effects, where it comes by default for specific items. To use a different set effect on a particular armor, you may need to find the right materials to engrave them on that item. There are many mobs, from the regular goblins, weird looking angels, armored orcs, all the way to gigantic dragon occupying 3/4 of the map, with a common goal to just knock you out. The endgame here is basically the Gap of Abyss, which is like a dungeon MMO raid instance where defeating the boss drops a material that can help to craft items or to create an engraving for set effects, or pets that gives a boost to certain stats.
Female characters here looks decent, with some of them (*cough* Mage *cough*) showing off their assets, though in general the character asset design is that you can expect from a mobile game; extremely simplistic and lacking features. As a mindless RPG fun, its decent, though it gets really repetitive very fast. Sadly, the game is pretty much dead in 2019 onwards, so good luck finding people to run Gap of Abyss, since that's the place that drops endgame stuffs. I literally had to complete almost all achievements solo, finding people to play in Gap of Abyss is literally like pulling a SSR from a 0.1% rate up gacha.
Soloing it is possible, but very time consuming. Some of the later nodes are literally filled with mobs that occupy 3/4 of the arena, having almost no way to knock them down or stun them and an insanely bloated HP pool, especially that Kaldeus of the Abyss node, where the dragon there already occupy 1/2 of the god damn map, and two armored orcs that can only be knock downed by hard knockdown skills. Every character only has one hard knockdown skill, excluding super skills, so majority of the time you will be running, kiting and occasionally poking. As of today, I found out, they made soloing Gap of the Abyss even harder by reducing the time taken from 20 minutes to a whopping 5 minutes. 5. Minutes. What is this stupid decision to chase away people that are playing a pretty much a dead game? Did I mentioned that Gap of Abyss was unplayable for a while for quite a long period of time simply because the dev never bothered to fix some firewall issue?
Overall, please, don't buy this game. Don't support this developer, they aren't doing anything with this game. Just, go and buy some other game. It's not worth your time at all.
Nice oldschool beat 'em up with average plot, pleasant graphic and moderate system requirements (well, adding vsync would be nice). If you are a fan of Golden axe and Dragon`s crown, this is the right stuff.
Be avare:
1. Grinding. Good gear and runes ain't on sale.
2. Multiplayer is gone - now it's fully single, with your own characters helping at Gates of abyss. Too bad for people with (nonimaginary) friends. Totally fine with me.
3. Some people have white screen issue at start - there is a solution for that in discussions, albeit in french.
Do not buy this game, half of the game content is not accessible because the servers shut down.
No update to the game, their facebook or any other social media account since early 2019.
This game is dead.
Game has a 2D sidescroller just like you will see in many games. What sets this apart is gear you get from completing quests and killing bosses that you can combine stats from and make your own set of gear with stats that fit your play stile. I highly recommended, under rated game. Had lots of fun playing it and unlocking items.
The lonely farming
- Online dead.
- The developers are not interested in the health of the game.
- The developers let the game die.
- A fun combat system to play with other people.
[*] The prices of the other characters can be a barrier.
Obvious to anyone who has played Dragon's Crown, this game is "heavily inspired" by the aforementioned title. However, since Vanillaware has decided not to (as of yet) grace us with its presence on PC, this little number will have to suffice for the time being.
Based on a YouTube review I watched this seems to have been a mobile title first, and it shows in the lack of difficulty and the over-emphasis on using the mouse to navigate through menus (which can be a pain when you are on controller).
PROs:
The art is well done and will be appreciated by Dragon's Crown fans (Read: Ecchi), and the aesthetic is charming and well put together overall.
The playable character classes offer decent variety and customization via their Diablo III-esque ability system.
Easy to pick up and play, episodic battles make it good for someone with limited time.
CONs:
The base game is WAY overpriced at $15 as it only comes with HALF of the playable characters...the additional characters are $5 each, making a complete version of this MOBILE game $30...WHAT?!
Extremely easy combat designed to be played easily on a mobile device with no difficulty settings
NO LOCAL PLAYER/EXTREMELY LIMITED ONLINE MULTIPLAYER DESPITE MULTIPLAYER STEAM TAG
FINAL VERDICT:
This game is clearly made by people who care about what they are doing, and it can be a fun distraction.
That being said, the greedy business model of the mobile gaming market stripped away the potential value of the title from the outset.
DO NOT BUY unless it's on sale.
I really love the ingame art especially the 2d painted sprites
and the amazing gears customization.
but boring combats, no custom combo, no air combo..
feel like a mobile games without the auto combat funtions(just found out that this game used to be a moble game)
its better to just skip this game and get Dungeon Fighter
This game is good imo. Here are my opinion.
Pros
- Good graphics, artworks and designs that are animu style. I give it 10/10
- Simple but fun gameplay, it's gameplay that can find from mobile game nowadays, but I love old school style like this (like DFO).
- No microtransaction to get the gears or fashion outfits, but it also has some cons.
- Constant update! Noice! (Edit: the game hasn't updated for a while, guess it's ded)
Cons
- End game content (I mean to get perfect stats and options) needs quite much time to grind, and some of them are freaking difficult to clear.
- Plus, end game contents are online and sometimes the lag are frustrating.
- 3 Waifus cost money that all of them cost more than the game itself. 3 free chars are not enough.
Just bought the game.
Install the game.
Game doesn't launch.
1. Uninstall the game = Not working.
2. Reboot everything = Not working.
3. Run Dragon_Spear.exe as administrator = Not working.
4. Tried multiple Windows compatiblites = Not working.
5. Task manager, I see the process. Open/Maximize game window = Not working.
6. Verify integrity of game files = Not working.
7. All other games I have on my PC work fine.
8. Just bought this game, give me a refund.
Oh, and I forgot to mention that there is no support at all to help you solve the problem.
While I enjoy the game, I can't recommend purchasing it.
The storyline is bland, mechanics are meh and the translations are straight from Google Translate. Item, skill, stat and ability descriptions are hard to understand.
The main reason I can't recommend buying Dragon Spear is the fact that the end game is all online. The server is horrid. Unless you're hosting the room, you can be assured of 2-5 seconds of lag. You'll successfully dodge and attack (on your screen), then 2-5 seconds later you'll be knocked down and take damage. Even if you're on the other side of the arena.
Also, the server crashes constantly for HOURS! Leaving you with only the story to play. No dev interaction or explanations as to what is going on. It's a crap shoot to see if you're even able to play on any given day.
To the Devs,
Please hire a REAL translation company.
Find a REAL server host.
Update the UI to give the player better knowledge on what stats do (i.e. clicking on Willpower will tell you that this stat increases your maximum mana)
Address the rampant hackers in the community. Unlimited Mp, Unlimited HP, OHKO, God Mode, Item Stat Exploits, Unlimited Ultimate, Unlimited Carve Skill, etc... etc... etc...
Again, I like the game and wish for it to succeed. More classes, levels, loot and skills for current characters would further increase the potential of the game.
Or, you can keep it as a simple cash grab for scantilly dressed women and move on. Further showing that mobile games don't care about customers.
Dragon spear's most unfortunate feature is that's its' name. Try to look up reviews on it and it will inevitably lead you to the Baldur's gate expansion of the same name. Regardless whereas The Vagrant was a tribute to Odin Sphere and Murasama, Dragon-Spear seems like another group of people inspired by George Kamitani's art style who set out to do their own version of Dragon's Crown. I'd say they succeeded with the only caveat being some of the more interesting classes (Assassin,Pirate, and Sorceress) are dlc. But with the core game usually being 14.99 and each additional character being 4.99 it's not "too bad". I still don't approve of it but at the most you pay around $30.00 for a good fantasy beat em up with light rpg/crafting mechanics.
Of course as you'd expect, the game looks beautiful and the combat is fast and fluid. Playing as the pirate in particular reminded me of Dante's gunslinger style mixed with the engineer from Torchlight 2 (Aka,she has the ability to set up automatic gun turrets later on and her duel pistol gun play is great for juggling enemies.)
The music was okay. "Epic fantasy Fare" is the gyst of it and it compliments the game nicely. It certainly is not out of place but it does little to stir the emotions either. (Sorry, I've been spoiled on the orchestral compositions of Nier Gestalt/Automata which are always tear jerkers and memorable. Heck, that franchise even had its' own language sounding like a babel's tower mix of different cultural tongues all meshed into very melancholic hymns of fleeting hopes and heart-crushing tragedies.) Yeah, not everyone can be a master or mistress of song but that doesn't mean what's on offer here isn't serviceable. Besides, this is a simple fantasy brawler with the usual fantasy tropes thus the soundtrack doesn't always need to pull your heart-strings to keep you motivated! You merely need to be psyched up enough to smash hordes of orcs, gnolls, goblins, giant spiders, and ogres and on that level the music strikes a nice balance between ominous foreboding and exuberant optimism!
The set up is what you've seen before. You have a hub town where you can buy stuff and forge stronger gear (Or break it down for raw components) and the rest of the world that is being besieged by "nightmares". (A term used to describe the various monsters in typical myths and folklore)There is a story but so far it's just the standard "Unlikely heroes must band together to stop a great evil" pitch used a convenient excuse to push lazy bar-bums in epic cosplay gear out the front door of ye olde local inn. Aka, about how every Dungeons & Dragons campaign tends to transpire! To most beat em up enthusiasts this won't matter as the game play and epic confrontations they set up later on with bigger and more powerful monsters (Along with the acquisition of better loot) are truly where Dragon-Spear shines.
Still,I'd argue a game like this could in fact have a deeper plot with more unexpected twists and turns. I mean Technically Nier Automata is in the same action spectacle hack n slash genre as Bayonetta or DMC yet it has a much more emotional and original premise driving everything. It asks a lot of existential questions despite the fact gamers can also have a good time just hacking and slashing robots into scrap metal. Likewise a fantasy themed beat em up does not necessarily have to be so generic. Having stated this,"generic" has rarely looked so sexy (Seriously, all the female classes/characters in this game are remnants forged from the fevered erotic pipe dreams of teenagers at the very height of their horniness!) So if you "Like the ladies" as much as Yoko Taro does this game will certainly entertain you in that department!
There is honest-to-goodness co-op if you have friends and you are not a neet hermit shut-in like yours truly! "Abyss levels" are extra steep in challenge insisting you team up with others and I've even seen a PVP type arena. This could fill the void of any gamers whom nostalgically reminisce about playing thru Dragon's Crown,Guardian Heroes,or Castle Crashers with their loved ones. The story mode is fun enough on its' own and I hope even if the future is grim with servers shutting down, Dragon Spear can still be played via lan and will leave behind the single player campaign for those of us that bought it and all its' dlc. (As it would be a kick in the balls otherwise!)
Assuming you have a potato of a pc like mine that's tragically too under-clocked to run a grand opus like Nier Automata above 4 frames per second leaving you bitterly asking for a refund, consider Dragon Spear a nice diversion and "handkerchief" to dry those angsty tears! It may not be as intellectual or emotional of a journey but it sure is beautiful and runs silky smooth as you fill the screen with all matter of flashy nonsense to slay that dragon,spider-lady, or manticore thus acquiring that string bikini with +10 magic resistance you've been farming for!
Pros
+Dem sexy ladies
+Fluid smooth animations
+Beautiful visual style
+Reasonable system requirements
+ Co-op should you want it
+You can see your gear change when you equip new stuff
+ Fun combat (But it can get repetitive)
+Easy to understand crafting and enhancement system
+A soundtrack befitting of what is happening on screen
+Single player campaign included for neet hermits
+Pets! (Eventually)
Cons
-Some of the more interesting characters/classes are dlc. This is
not a good first impression. An action rpg shouldn't put
half their playable roster behind a pay-wall.
-Seemed like some menus (Mainly the store/black smith/equip screen)
required you to use a mouse for certain things even after you
choose "controller" in your options menu. It's not a big deal,
just a small nag!
-A bit on the generic side
-You make it to some bosses before being leveled up sufficiently.
Get ready to grind yo avatar's behind! (Repeat earlier
levels for more experience points.)
-Have to co-op for some of the rarer item drops and steeper challenges even if you do
prefer solitary play.
Last words of advice? Fam,let us keep it real. We know this is a beat em up rpg hybrid and with that will come a lot of repetition. Some people will be fine with that but others will not. Just don't jump into this game expecting 1,001 side diversions such as chopping wood, flirting with bar wenches, buying properties, building your own log cabin, raising your own kids,or whateva else the most "cutting edge" AAA open world game is doing right now! This is a classic brawler where you scroll from left to right, beating the ever living snot out of the foes you encounter. "Sometimes" you may free a villager or two so they'll leave you behind a pork chop out of gratitude! That's pretty much all she wrote beyond boss battles that are more challenging and require more dexterity and tactical planning than the usual goon squad.
This one is for my people who enjoyed playing Guardian Heroes or D & D Shadows Over Mystara back in the olden days. If you've never even so much as glanced at a Final Fight,Streets Of Rage, King Of The Dragons,Bionic Commando,Battle Circuit,Night Slashers,Alien versus Predator the arcade game,Cadillacs and dinosaurs, Double Dragon, or Knights of the round then you obviously never got to experience or appreciate this genre. Ditto if you can't wrap your head around Dungeon-Fighter online! I'm not saying this to be mean, merely that you shouldn't buy a used jalopy with some personal nostalgic charm thinking it will magically turn into a friggin brand spanking new hover-corvette right before your very eyes! Dragon-Spear is very honest with what it is and it doesn't take a master of deduction to figure out what it offers and what it does not.
(Lastly, those who complain about dragon-spear being too easy probably have not even cleared the first zone as even the desert area proceeding it begins throwing in environmental traps, tougher enemies, and larger hordes. Just sayin.)
What you are paying for is a mobile game port which means the game was designed as a mobile game first hand.
And surprise its extremely monotonous. Every single stage is the same and hell even the skills barely a character has barely vary. You end up doing the exact same thing over and over. Also this game is literally google translated.
The portraits are nice and the ingame graphics aren't bad but nothing extraordinary.
This game just isn't worth 10 or more bucks.
I come from the mobile version of this game and let me tell you something "God im soooo glad that they got rid of microtransactions in this game for PC" It's such a good feeling to play a game knowing there's no p2w features and full of microtransactions because that made the game pure cancer for me personally. I didn't mind the $15 price as it's 100% worth it as i don't mind the characters price either as it's completely fine. That's literally the one thing you pay for as they made the game less grindy. So this game is a 11/10 for me just because there's no microtransactions in it.
First I played this using an emulator for phone. Never thought it would come to PC, and out of all places, on steam. This is a very good game overall.
+ Lots of action and makes your attack feels powerful.
+ Love Cacao's (kwon yun jeong) unique artstyle.
+ Gfx looks updated to fit higher res, although the emulator did just as good. No significant difference but overall a positive.
+ An ok but available story mode to keep you going.
+ Lots of missions to go through (and grind if that's what your thing).
+ Lots of equipments and an in-depth simple but effective crafting system for upgrading equipments.
+ Boobies...lots of juggly boobies.
+ Korean art style, which means exotic armor designs and their visual on your heroes. Can't go wrong with that!
+ No P2W scenario.
+ Co-op mode for online.
+ Lots of fanservice (BOOOOBIESSSSSSSS)
- 3 of the 4 females are locked. You have to pay 5 bucks for each heroine, and when you add that up on top of the base game that's $30 for a mobile game!
- Grinding...if that's what you like to do. A must for most korean games I guess.
- Quite frequent issues where the game does not recognize K&M control for directional movements. Going to settings and rebinding them seems to solve the issue for few rounds.
Highly recommend it, but wait for a sale for the base game or the DLCs. Those boobies aren't worth the 5 bucks/female heroine.
Important Edits/Changes
Edit 1: Due to a recent update (1.002), all the pirates and cheaters are gone-- the servers have been incredibly stable, and the game's as fun as it was intended to be.
Edit 2: The next update (1.003) added something that really made my experience 200% better: the Fashion Shop! With it, you can hide your wings! Not too important a change, but for someone like me, this change was very much needed, and very much appreciated!
Edit 3: I spoke too soon-- the cheating has become rampant again, and for such an easy game, it's really petty. Why pay $15 just to cheat? All the cheaters tend to really suck or don't know boss patterns, too, as they're also prone to dying if they don't use god mode or cheat to spam their ultimate which gives invincibility.
The Review
A decent way to kill time, I guess. It's what you'd expect of a mobile game, except with all the Stamina systems and P2W aspects removed. The only "P2W" that's really here is buying Gunner/Sorceress/Assassin, and that's not even mandatory.
Cheaters are rampant in the game, as are pirates, but that shouldn't really stop anyone from playing.See: Edit 1
Boss fights can get pretty intense, requiring proper positioning and tight play to kill the boss without dying, and at times, it feels rewarding to do that(especially if your entire team is dead).
- Soundtrack is alright, recycles like 3 songs in stages, and the hub music is catchy.
- Visuals are pretty good as well, similar to that of Vanillaware games.
Also, gear is not shared. You have to raise each individual character from the ground. It's a little annoying, but it adds more game time, I guess. Money and Sage stones, however, are account-wide.
On the other hand, set building is pretty important, and a player can put special effects on their equipment if they want to play with fashion, rather than running pure optimal builds. Each piece of equipment has a visual change to your character, as well, which is pretty nice(though a lot of them are just minor changes+recolors).
Dragon Spear is a pretty decent game overall. With the recent update that removed all the Pirates(players named HLM) and cheaters, the game is a definite recommend for people looking to kill time with a top-down game that's not p2w like Closers.
The Verdict
Buy Dragon Spear if you are interested in it, and in games much like Dungeon Fighter, or Vanillaware games. If you're iffy about buying it, wait for sales. Decent replayability, enough mechanics for min-maxers to really get into the game, and bad/good enough RNG that'll keep a player farming hard for completion!
--------------------------------------
With all the updates coming out, soon I might just have to cross out the entire review and just say "Damn, they did a good job managing the game!"
If you loved Golden Axe, Shadows over Mystara and Dragon's Crown, you will love Dragon Spear. Although this is a mobile port, the graphic and performance are great, and it even supports 21:9 ultra widescreen (no doubt helped by the existence of 18:9 phones).
The gameplay is addictive and streamlined, but still tactical, as you have a lot of abilities and cooldowns to manage. The game is deceptively easy in the first few chapters, but the difficulty spikes in Chapters 7 and 8. Sadly, there is no co-op play in the main campaign, but the multiplayer zone of the Chasm of Abyss provides quick sorties to grind gear and rare items for those inclined. It's a shame Atlus has no interest in porting Dragon's Crown over to PC, but Dragon Spear does a good job of scratching that itch.
The graphics and art design are top notch, and your gear, costumes and pets will change in-game to reflect your equipped items, which is something of a rarity in this genre. You can also mix and match equipment sets to customize your look. There is a lot of content for the price of the game, I finished the main campaign on one character in about 12 hours, but there is still a lot of gear for me to unlock, not to mention completing the campaign on other characters.
H̶i̶g̶h̶l̶y̶ recommended for fans of the genre.
EDIT 08/24/2018: After spending more time playing the game (30+ hrs) and playing with more characters, I do have more criticisms of the game. The game is front-loaded due to its origin as a mobile game. You are inundated with new content (new abilities, equipment, maps, rewards) in the beginning that exponentially slow down in later stages of the game, making it much more of a grind to level up and craft gear in the late game. Be prepared to grind Chasm levels a /lot/ to get the crafting materials you want. There is also less variety in the way different character classes play than I would have liked. The DLC characters (Sorceress, Gunner, Assassin) all play very much like variations of the Fighter, only with a focus on different aspects (more AoE on the Sorceress, more melee on the Assassin). The ranged combat on the Sorceress and Gunner basic attacks are very unfulfilling due to slow rate of fire, low damage, low stun, and slow animation speed/repositioning. The various costumes for the character classes tend to be too similar between each class, which is a shame. The game is still worth playing, but my rating has been revised from 'Highly Recommended' to just 'Recommended'.
A total Dragons Crown copy... Clunky controls, decent looks, less fun though.
It's not bad, more or less just average. if you don't have access to Dragons Crown, this may scratch your Golden Ax like game play itch.
A fun mobile beat 'em up no longer held back by stamina, ads, and in app purchases. A nice alternative to Dungeon Fighter Online and Dragons Crown. The translation needs some work and some options don't stick. Story mode is single player. You can join up to 3 other players online for the Abyss Dungeons. The features are a little behind the mobile version so no Guilds or PVP yet. The 3 characters locked behind DLC is a little annoying but I'd still rather have them like that than have a cash shop with $50~$100 gem packs.
So far im loving it, good graphics, fast combat and most of all NO P2W, I have not found any ingame gear to buy with cash, no premium armors, no vip levels or enchants, nothing of that sort, yea you can buy new champions but its dlc not p2w, so im happy with my purchase, hope more players will join so we can kill something big :D Do not get too hyped tho, it is button basher not rly rpg, a lot of action and not much of depth, It gets boring after few hours but I still thing game is worth it.
