Introduction
I haven’t seen the second LEGO movie. I’ve heard the game isn’t faithful to it, however.
I didn’t play the DLC. It’s free though, which is nice.
I try to 100% most of the games I play, so some opinions might be influenced by the achievements in the game.
Quick overview
Pros
- The open world is available to explore from the beginning
- The bosses look cool
- Free dlc with extra levels for those who want more
- There are not that many bugs, which is rare for a lego game
Cons
- Your character moves really slow, and vehicles do not help
[list] - No fast travel, which makes the above even worse
Bugs
- One of the quests required the player to take a photo of an object, but the position from where to take the photo was bugged
[list] - You have to stand behind the object at a specific angle - I had to look this up
More detailed overview
Modern LEGO games often feature a more open world free roam hub world, instead of just a shop to buy new characters. I usually like this feature. The problem with this game is that they removed the standard levels, and instead only have the free roam hub. This is already a drawback, but what is worse is that the areas are just a watered down version compared to other lego games. A lot of the bricks (golden bricks in older games) are just laying around to be picked up without the player needing to do anything. There are also many quests in each world that also give bricks. The quests themselves are just the same types: kill enemies, fetch quest, build a generator for power etc. Most quests can be done in less than a minute. Having basic quests is not necessarily a bad thing, but since they are some of the only content in this game, they do not do enough to keep the player engaged. The worlds are also lacking any form of puzzles, which also makes them more dull.
The story in this game is extremely short. Most worlds have so few story quests, that they can be completed in less than 30 min. If you only focus on the story you can probably complete it in less than 3 hours. The story quests themselves are not too different from the side quests either. Most worlds story goes like this: enter world, do some basic fetch quests or fight enemies, fight a boss, done. The bossfights are kind of nice - they are however cooler to look at than to fight.
Lucy occasionally narrates events, but most of her lines are just generic "We sure had a rough time doing this thing, but we did it!". This happens infrequently which makes it feel very awkward, and to the point where I sometimes even forgot that she was the "narrator" of the game. Most of the dialogue is not plotheavy anyways, so the story just feels kind of irrelevant (Yes I know this is a LEGO game, so things like story should not matter a lot, but the first game handled these things better). The characters also do not feel special and there is not a lot of humor in this game, which can make the game feel soulless.
Since there are no levels and the story is more or less nonexistent, there was no real content to keep me engaged. The game quickly made me feel like I was playing the last part of every lego game, where you are only doing things to get 100% completion.
This game also introduces a new loot box system with relics. You do get some characters, builds, and items throughout the game from story and scanning objects. The rest of them you need to get from the loot box system, and worst of all you can get duplicates - these convert into shards that you can then use to create more relics. This system feels like a completely pointless addition to the game. I would rather have a shop where you can buy characters in. Luckily you do not have to spend a ton of time farming relics to get all the required characters etc. to get 100% completion. If you are the type that wants to get everything in a game including things not necessary for 100% achievements good luck.
Overall
- This game is definitely not as good as the first game
- The game feels empty and soulless
- It feels like I am already going for 100% completion from the start
[*]Of all the LEGO games that I have played, this is by far the most boring one
Score
Score: 4 / 10
100% Achievements difficulty: low
100% Achievements annoyance: low*
* Getting 100% achievements is not annoying in this game because of the achievements, but instead because the game itself is boring.
Recommendation
Only play this if you really like the LEGO games, and this is the only game you are missing. Otherwise just skip this one.
As much as I loved the first Lego Movie (9.5/10), the game based on it (6/10) wasn't really a good experience. As for the second Lego Movie (6.75/10), it wasn't as creative as the original, it had problems with its writing and continuity, and several more cliches than the first, leaving it below average. So, what do I think of The Lego Movie Part 2 Video Game? Well... a lot of people actually dislike the game for many reasons, and from my experience of playing it, I can actually see why. In full honesty, I did not have fun playing this game. It's bad. Like, it is the WORST Lego video game I have ever played!
First off, let's discuss the visuals. The Lego Bricks are really lacking in texture. They're missing dust, scratches and bumps, unlike the characters. The Duplo parts are made of normal Lego elements, and I have no idea why. The color palette of this game is HORRENDOUS! The loading screen shows these overly saturated Lego lines against a dark background. Apocalypseburg is lacking in proper set dressing and atmosphere, with these overly bright yellow grounds and brown terrain everywhere. And the space environments aren't much better, as places like the Asteroid Field have these overly saturated cyan asteroids against a hideous space background with oversized stars and a disgusting low-contrast purple! A lot of environmental elements like the terrain are lacking in contrasting colors which would have added a certain beauty to each scene! Speaking of terrain, it gets uglier and uglier, the farther away from it you are! The lowest LODs (which have a non-Lego terrain shape) bear this appalling, flat texture that just resembles a bunch of Lego tiles! No studs, no nothing! It looks like something out of Roblox!
The gameplay is also not fun. It doesn't offer what you would expect from a typical Lego video game. Usually, you have things like Quick-Builds, Minikits, Extras and other things, but guess what? None of those are even present in this game! And to make matters worse, the puzzles you'd expect from the first game, such as Benny's mazes, don't make a comeback, either! Nor do any characters possess the special capabilities that they are known for! You just "wear" them, as if they were different outfits! The camera system is also irritating, because there's no way to disable the automatic adjustment. In fact, it's still moving when you right click and drag, overriding your desired change of perspective! Getting into the mechanics, some of them, such as the Paint Wand, cannot be used as both a weapon and a tool, which annoys me. The main mechanic that you'll mostly use throughout the game is this so-called "Builder Page": a set of instructions that you use to build certain models in specific places, provided you've gathered enough pieces. What do I think of it? Well, I believe that this mechanic makes absolutely no sense to include, because of the Master Builders' unique and creative spirit by which they don't even need instructions! So, the fact that they need it here is absolutely disrespectful to the source material! And not only that, some of the builds don't make sense, either! For example, why are you building Micro Managers to remove Kragle, when both of those things, continuity-wise, should be no more after the first film?! Why are our builds able to remove Kragle, when President Business used a special watering can?! Also, speaking of continuity, this game tends to bring up certain things or events in the wrong order! For example, Alfred mentions Syspocalypstar towards the beginning of the game, when it's supposed to come to fruition at the end of all this! It also utilizes story elements in an order that disrespects the original movie. For example, the Duplo creatures requiring you to take the cake pieces through the Stairgate Portal. In the movie, the Stairgate comes BEFORE Planet Duplo! Regarding the voice acting, why is Lucy narrating this as if she were the main character? I have no idea. Which reminds me, the game offers a weird mix of dialogue and mumbling. It's as if this game had a much lower budget than what we've seen with previous titles! The combat system is frustrating, with some enemies being able to disable your fighting and movement controls as they hit you repeatedly! The tutorial also fails to mention that your character follows your mouse when you hold down the left button, which is what I would typically use for punching enemies, so it was frustrating to find that out the hard way. When it comes down to the "boss battles," if you could call them that, there's a lack of challenge, and you're just climbing and punching things. There's barely anything unique for each boss, here! The objectives you complete across the different worlds are bland and repetitive, although Middle Zealand's world was more interesting. As you traverse through each world, you pick up these "Relics" that unlock different characters, accessories and models. I probably would have called them "Capsules," because when I hear the word "relic" in the Lego movie franchise, I think of the real-world objects, such as the "Cloak of Ban-dai-eed" or the "Sword of Exact Zero." The vehicles are annoying to drive, as well. Your W,A,S,D controls don't point the vehicles in the direction you want to go! You accelerate forwards and backwards with W and A, while steering with S and D! And the flying vehicles have inconsistent controls with your character! Specifically, pressing Ctrl, rather than Shift to descend! Exiting the vehicles is also an annoyance, because suppose you approach a high platform and hit E to exit. You might be ejected the wrong way and fall to the ground! As for races, some of the races that you encounter across the different worlds don't provide a vehicle for you to use, and they don't teleport you into position, either! It's also easy to accidentally interact with NPCs during a race, so they should be disabled while this is happening! None of the bonus content is enjoyable, either! For example, after Bricksburg reappears in the Lego Movie worlds as if it were rebuilt, so do President Business' robots, along with a suggestion that he may have gone back to his evil ways. WHY?! There's also some DLC following General Sweet Mayhem on a couple missions, but they're not exciting. They're just about gathering objects and looking for people. And the Rex-celsior mission isn't fun, either. What we expect from Extras in previous Lego games, we get as "Super Pieces" that give you special abilities, but you can only wear one at any given time. And collecting all those "Master Pieces" is the only thing you need to do to get a hundred percent completion in the game.
To sum it all up, The Lego Movie Part 2 Video Game is awful. It's a bland, confusing and unchallenging insult to the entire Lego video game series and to all the fans who love it. If anything, I would rebuild this game from the ground up, but I am unfortunately lacking the Builder Pages required to do it.
Final Score: 3.5/10
i regret spending money on lego worlds with less features
The Story is pretty mid, but the open world is SO fun. It gets easy once you learn how to use the Relics, and it just becomes any other LEGO game once you do.
its really not that good, it doesn't have any of the lego game humor i love and the game gets pretty repetitive after the first hour or so
I would say that this is good if you havent watched THE LEGO MOVIE 2 because this isnt very accurate to the movie. 5/10 pretty mid.
very fun, after beating iuts pretty open world and theres lots to explore
Very enyojable. A little tedious with building some stuff, but other than that a really fun experience.
A BUGGY AND BROKEN MESS, STUTTERS, TEXTURES WILL UNLOAD AND LOAD, CERTAIN ITEMS YOU USE CAN STRAIGHT UP UNLOAD YOUR CHARACTERS TEXTURES, THE GAME IS UNBEATABLE DUE TO IT BEING A CRAPPY CONSOLE PORT SO I LITTERALLY REQUIRE A CONTROLLER TO BEAT IT ON PC WHICH I DONT HAVE. YOU CAN JUST CASUALLY GLITCH THROUGH OBJECTS GOD THIS IS SO AWEFUL CRAPPY PORT DONT BOTHER WITH IT
I grew up playing hit Tt titles the majority of my childhood on my parents Nintendo Wii and Xbox One. every game was a complete success!! from the details, to the comedy, to the overall uniqueness each game brought to the table. after just two hours of playing this game, I am left with one of the most bitter and uncomfortable tastes in my mouth. I am very disappointed in the turnout of this game and it makes sense why I never ever saw any news about this game coming out. but I will be giving it a fair review based on my experience, listing pros and cons as they stand out. cons will be listed first as they are what make the game as bad as it is.
Cons: (far outweigh the pros):
1. LEGO WORLDS reskin - the entire experience feels like they took lego worlds and tried to add a dlc campaign to it. almost like I am playing lego worlds minus all the fun world bending and building possibilities. like a lego worlds prototype after the release of lego worlds.
2. items - while most of the items/weapons got a new animation or sound effect to them, basically 90% of them are directly taken from lego worlds. there are a few new ones that are from the movie this game is based off of, but thats it.
3. Voice acting - with it feeling like a lego worlds dlc, the narrator is replaced with lucy's voice. Emmet never speaks a word of dialogue and only makes weird motions and actions. lucy voiceovers everything emmet is feeling and doing. only time emmet makes noise is when he does things in game which just sounds exactly like his sound effects from the first game. lucy is really the only person who talks minus super tiny bits from unikitty, metalbeard, batman, and benny.
4. vehicles - with this being a lego worlds reskin, you think they'd just do the cars the same. wrong, they made the vehicles useless. not only are they now as fast as the players running speeds, but they are completely pointless (minus ultrakitty) there is a sidequest where you race around the wasteland in a giant monster truck. it moves about as fast as a walk behind lawnmower. every car in the game is the same speed. the racing quests are faster to complete on foot.
5. entire game feels soulless - with this being a Tt title, it just seems to lack every drop of what makes lego Tt games amazing. overall would not recommend.
Pro's:
1. the second most recent Tt Lego game released (as of feb 2025)
2. features an open world environment with lots of mini side quests for player progression
3. weapon sound effects and animations are really well made
4. completely new mechanic of collecting colored bricks from destroyed builds. these can be used in the tools and items you can build to assist you.
5. epic combo finishers when in battle. main characters have signature finishers.
6. The Lego Duplo enemys and bosses bring a really nice alternative animation style to the game.
7. weird but charming loot relic system for acquiring items (takes the hunt out of the game but new feature).
8. well made cutscenes tho they lack the classic Tt magic. also entirely narrated by lucy.
i lowkey dont care how bad the game is bcs i like the characters
Take the well-known formula of Telltale Lego games and strip it down from every interesting bit, you end up wit the LEGO Movie 2 videogame. An experience that's so mind-bogglingly boring it goes all the way into bad.
This is a collectathon where the collectibles are poorly scattered over areas that are somehow both too big and yet have not enough going on. Quests are almost all fetch quests, the slowest races known to man or just going from one area to another. There's no puzzle-solving, thoughtful placement or good parkour, you're just gathering stuff for the sake of gathering stuff.
Combat also feels loose in the worst way with hits feeling like they don't register and when an enemy gets you being stunlocked. Which is funny since this might be the first time the series tried to give enemies a bit more variety how to beat them, but I moreso avoid fighting enemies than confront them because of it.
And even the gathering of stuff is boring because it's all gacha mechanics. Items, characters, constructions, even the extras are all tied to this lootbox system that makes collecting things annoying. Which also means characters don't come with unique abilities, being all reduced to skins while you only get a toolbelt with pretty useless gadgets in them.
There are better Lego games on the market than this, so if you can buy those instead of this one. It's simply not worth your time or effort.
I was in the LEGO Moive Game twice now.👍
boring
12 and a half minute intro every single time I play this game. No it isn't a loading screen. So I'd say my real play time is about 10 minutes. The other 45 hours is waiting on login.
And no, it's not loading something in the background. My computer could load this entire game into ram in 1.5 minutes tops. Does loading this game into ram before launch speed this up? No.
Emmett doesn't sound like Chris Pratt
This game is nothing the normal LEGO games. It's a completely different game play. Seems boring as heck and likes it's been made for preschool kids or something. I'm so glad I got this while it was a huge sale. It's not like the other lego games where you go through story mode and then you can free play and collect stuff and such. I can't even explain the game, as it just ticks me off just thinking about it. Just stay the heck away from it if you like the normal lego games. This just bad bad bad.
The conventional format of Lego games are that they roughly follow the media they are based upon, in other words; if you play Lego Star Wars, the game will loosely revolve around the Star Wars movie's plot. Unlockable characters possess various traits which helps you progress the heavily linear levels. If you purchase this game expecting it to follow the norms of other Lego games, you are most likely bound to end up disappointed.
This game (Lego Movie 2 Videogame, abbrv. LM2VG) takes a different direction, instead of a central hub where you select a linear story level, there are many differently themed worlds reliant on non-linear open world exploration, with some containing story missions and most containing plenty of side missions. In many regards, LM2VG is very similar to it's cousin game Lego Worlds (including it's respective flaws) which is more of a sandbox experience. This game is also VERY repetitive and padded. Keep this in mind if you are looking to buy The Lego Movie 2 Videogame and perhaps consider holding out until it goes on sale.
LM2VG is in general pretty good and worthy of a recommend.
a very different type of lego game. As a one of its good, but hopefully they dont keep to this format
Unfortunately, this is not a fun LEGO game. It has no missions, no real difference between the characters.
No fun.
It is compared to LEGO World, if you like that game, you would like this game.
If you like the other LEGO Games, you may not like this one.
Do not get this game, the first game is much better than this one, after beating this I was very confused. The game doesn't focus on the characters much at all you see them for 2 seconds and almost forget they exist. It doesn't feel much connected to the movie either. The only part I found a bit fun were the boss fights but even so the ending or finale sucked. This game is basically do side quests for people then boom a boss fight. I really wish they made this game similar to the 1st where they focused on the characters and using their skills and abilities for objectives
TLDR; have played/100% most lego games, this game rocks, especially for co-op and collection freaks. Dont expect lego worlds, its more traditional lego. Combat and Camera are not great but not deal breakers. Also skywalker saga sucks.
So me and my son (5yo) have decided to play and attempt 100% of all lego games together. Currently we have pretty much played them all, with lego worlds being our favorite and the new star wars one being my personal letdown.
With that said I have personally played every lego game before my son was born and then after his birth, finished my collection.
+ This game adds all of the fun parts of each individual game and mashes it together into a crazy collect-athon adventure that is quite hilarious and fun. I am not sure how much time this will hold our attention but the current outlook is good. Instead of changing characters like in most lego games to solve puzzles, you thematically are a master builder and have the ability to build stuff. A trampoline to get up high or a generator to apply power to a gate for example.
+/- If you are coming from LEGO WORLDS and hoping that this will be an upgrade to that, go elsewhere. This is no where near as freeform as lego worlds but sometimes i think that is a good thing.
-the camera gets stuck constantly and whips around in tight areas
-the combat is pretty lackluster as a whole and it can be very easy to stunlock/get stunlocked to death
+Bosses are creative and fun to puzzle out
-some of the drops from chests will not pick up unless they finish "flying" out of the chest, on the moon map this is especially annoying because they can fly off into space
+red brick cheat codes are wearable armor and weapon pieces (but my son doesnt like the top hat so no 2x studs for him)
I had low expectations before playing this game due to the mostly negative reviews at the time and reading that it's like Lego Worlds. I find this more enjoyable than Lego Worlds... probably because I don't enjoy sandbox games very much.
Very short, pleasant game.
I somehow found a way to bypass a required build in the first 30 minutes, dont buy.
definitely not buggy af
it's very good obviously
The lego movie games arent just great and this lego movie game is just... a mess, its like lego world but a bit more worse, and the game gets boring really quickly, i mean yeah you can build anything you want, but theres lego world for that. also lego world was never released...
Dont. I get that the lego game formula was gettin old but this aint it.
absolute terrible game dont buy even if its on sale waste of your money. Best part of the game is hitting the uninstall button
Certainly not the best lego game they put out, but I still enjoyed it a lot.
Annoying game, no help tabs or something like that. Just delete this game.
Stop making these dumb games!
this game is fucking bullshit. you can't bind fucking controls on fucking keyboards
this game was so awful it crashed my computer (i wish i was joking)
this is truly fucking terrible
its good
