Very jank, but very fun.
better than the smash bro, better than the street fight, better than guilty man, better than the king of blokes, and better than clay fighter 63 1/3. Simply the best
I like this game. it's not anything fancy, but I dunno, it just feels pretty good. I like the trials/challenges, I think the portrait art is great, it plays pretty quick and is balanced pretty well, I dunno, it's solid. And if you have a super old 2009 pc that's below minimum spec, you can drop the settings to low and it'll still run fine. It's not pretty, but at least it works.
Its simple and fun
I always missed the characters from the Street Fighter EX series and always wondered if they will make an appearance in a Street Fighter game, but it seems they now have their own game and new characters as well!
Nostalgia hit me hard, when I played again with Skulomania, Kairi, Darun and many others! Plus, my favorite character from Fatal Fury is here too!
Some supers are not that impressive, but it is something that can be overlooked.
Great game, I really like it and hope for a crossover with Street Fighter again in the future!
it's a good fighting game
We main Shadowgeist in this household.
...I kinda like this game.
One of my all time favorite fighting games is Street Fighter EX2 Plus, which Arika has done an amazing job on, and after so many years since SFEX3, not a lot of people wanted to see the EX series back... but some of us did. I know I did.
While now they're helping Bamco work on Tekken 8 (for better or worse, I honestly couldn't care less about T8), their last game before this was Fighting EX Layer. And there's a lot to cover regarding this game. Like, A LOT.
This famously started out as an April Fool's joke, but the trailer was so well received that they went "Hey, let's make it into a game!", and now here we are with Fighting EX Layer.
First off? Do you like Street Fighter EX? Do you like the Arika characters in Street Fighter EX? The Hokutos, Doctrine Darks, Skullomanias, Kairis, Blairs? If so, you'll have a good time. But if not, I'd say it's still a satisfying experience.
This is basically Street Fighter EX with some things they put in and some things they put out. They obviously couldn't put the Street Fighter characters in here so you end up with a modest roster. Granted, Blair and Allen are back, who weren't present in EX2 or EX3 (at best you could edit Ace to use their moves), but even then, it's a small roster. But I understand they had to work with what they had.
They added some welcome stuff like the run and backdashes, which make games like the first EX games and the Alpha series a little funny to play nowadays. It's so funny that we always forget dashing didn't show up until SF3. Chain combos are here, for what they're worth, and while they did add some EX moves, it's one per character, and they don't offer that much of a utility. This is something that should have taken more time to consider, though I'm guessing they didn't have a lot of it. Could have been something more, is all I'm saying. All in all, it's what you remember from the EX series with some stuff peppered in. Honestly, Excel coming back would have been SICK. But balancing-wise? ..yeah, get in the bin. xD
The Gougi system... while there's some interesting things like meter gain, super armor, increased speed, the ability to escape combos, guard breaks (why did they take off the guard breaks in EX3 again?), and many others... you don't really have a lot of control over it. Let's use the Aggressor mode in MK Trilogy as a comparison. It activates simply based on the hits you land, there's neither strategy nor counterplay, it's just guaranteed to happen and players don't have much control over it, save for picking it at the select screen. So in the end it just gets in the way, sadly. It's nowhere near as bad as the gems in SF x Tekken but I would have appreciated some kind of Gougi-less mode. But it is what it is.
The animations and visuals are fine for the most part, I can see the new animations but I can also see the ones straight from the old games. The new designs are fine, my only nitpick is Jack, I liked mafioso Jack in EX2/3 a whole lot more, LMAO. But Shirase looks cool, Garuda looks cool, Allen looks like Allen, Blair looks alright, and then there's characters who didn't change a thing, like Kairi and Skullo, which is for the best. The stages look fine, though nothing super memorable, and the soundtrack I'm only guessing everyone switched to the classics, but honestly, the soundtrack from the EX series slaps harder than Darun Mister, so can you blame us? xD
Oh yeah, Terry is a guest character in this game, which is funny because in some Brazilian websites, there was this rumor that Terry Bogard was playable in Street Fighter EX2 Plus, unlocked by doing the trials in some bizarre sequence. This was obviously not true, but the fact that he's here after all these years makes me chuckle. Also I see your favoritism there Arika, giving him two level 3 Supers while no one else retains their level 3s from the past games! LMAO
There is a Progressive mode for some easier controls if you so desire, and the fact that they added a separate Expert Mode for each control type is pretty smart. I appreciate the fact that the Classic controls are here as well. Making a game accessible while also welcoming long time players, I appreciate that in a fighting game.
Expert Mode is... utterly terrifying... As it's meant to be. The craziest, nuttiest combos for every character, that you'll most likely not use in a real match! But for an extra mode? It's a 10/10. I could NEVER complete the Expert trials for all characters, but I always had a good time. Oh man, those Hokuto trials haunt me to this day. xD
I guess I should talk about performance before I wrap things up? It runs mostly fine, and while its 3gb of size is admirable and something I wish fighting games nowadays tried to copy (seriously, why are fighting games like 100gb nowadays?), there's a teensy little problem when it comes to widescreen. It doesn't stretch all the way. And if you play on two screens like I sometimes do, you're gonna take a while switching things to the preferred screen and even then there's gonna be some tiny little black borders on each sides. It doesn't affect recordings like OBS and stuff, so at least there's that.
All in all, Fighting EX Layer is a decent love letter to those who loved the Street Fighter EX series, while also being a perfectly fine game on his own. The Gougi stuff admittedly gets in the way, but not to the point of ruining the experience. The gameplay is what you liked from the past games save for Sharon being nerfed to oblivion I guess. Not covering online on this review since I play by myself most of the time. I know most people complain about the game feeling unfinished or not offering enough content and while that's all true, the fact this game came out AT ALL is worth some praise, so I totaly recommend it if you liked the EX series. It's super cheap on sales nowadays, so go check it out!
