A game with so much potential and absolutely gorgeous pixel art. However, I personally found the plot too slow, and the ending is disappointing. Not because of how it ended, but because nothing is resolved at all. The game raises so many intriguing questions about its world, but none of them are answered. The ending feels incomplete, cutting off just when everything seems ready to build up to a grand conclusion.

Story rushed & not finished. Gameplay not too interesting. Visuals & concept are really good though.

I thought I would be the ideal audience for this game - I love adventure games, narrative heavy experiences, noir fiction, and great dialogue. Tails Noir had all those things, but somehow added up to less than the sum of its parts.

Pros:
- memorable characters
- solid writing
- immersive, detailed setting
- interesting worldbuilding
- beautiful soundtrack, with some fun cutscenes involving the music

Cons:
- second half did not seem connected to the first half - by the time I got to the end of Act 3 I wasn't even sure what game I was in anymore
- confusing story - the description calls it "post noir" (what is that? I couldn't find a consistent definition online) but I expected more detective and less Lovecraft
- pixel art is beautiful, but the zoomed-in cut scenes get blocky and indistinct
- dialogue choices and decisions did not seem to impact the ending at all (and I'm not totally sure what happened in the ending)
- no real puzzles - more like a walking simulator than an adventure game

All in all it was a beautiful and intriguing game, but the story fell apart to the point where I felt disconnected at the end.

Scratches that Disco Elysium itch while being so pretty in its own way. Controversial, but I loved the ending.

So this game i must say i have really enjoyed if you like detective games this one is for u its like anthromorphic animal u play as racoon thats like human even the other ones around you and you have to uncover the dark secrets what the whole city hides i must say ive really enjoyed the game it was very fun and some moments very sad :( but if u want get it when its in sale that way you can support the developer directly just dont buy it from the key websites if you wanna know why there is already plenty of vids online about why its bad thing + the money wont directly go to the developer sadly.

Played the demo, loved it, saw the full game was on sale, bought it. Immediately hooked and played through the entire game in one three hour sitting. Loved every second of it. Would wholeheartedly recommend if the prologue seems to your liking.

A very qualified recommend.

Having grown up in (a rather far out suburb of...) Vancouver, this game caught my attention while it was in development. Vancouver hosts tons and tons of movie sets, but always for scripts set in another city. American cities mostly. Any sort of visual media based story actually taking place in Vancouver is nearly unheard of, save for the occasional thing on CBC nobody watches.

And for the first few acts this delivered in spades. Gritty noir drama, beautiful art direction, and best of all; Vancouver made its presence felt in a big way. This is a heavily fictionalised Vancouver of course and some parts of the city have been altered a bit, but the map and neighbourhoods track to the real city pretty faithfully. Gastown even has the steam clock! It was a delight getting to see Vancouver become a character unto itself in a hard edged crime drama the same way New York or London or Chicago get to be all the time.

Then the sudden shift in tone comes. Like many other reviewers, I didn't feel it stuck the landing. What really disappointed me though was how it quickly felt like a story that could take place anywhere again. As soon as the pivot hits, all the Vancouver-ness is sucked right out of the game. They really were cooking something special here, but it feels like the devs got anxious about playing it too safe with genre conventions, second guessed themselves and biffed it on a bold, daring twist. Nobody thought the first half was too cliche I promise!

So yes, a qualified reccomend. Explicitly Vancouver themed media is hard to come by and the first part of this game aces it.

I wouldnt say the game itself is for everyone, its more of a really interesting visual novel with not very complicated of a gameplay, but god its beautiful. the amount of time ive spent just walking trough the breathtaking locations, the amount of time my skin was filled with gousebumps, increadable. Will 100% go back to this game and inspect it like an artbook. Cant call the story boring in any way either, an interesting detective story with an unexpected end.

At first this game was quite exciting, but after entering ACT 2 this game became boring.

Felt a bit unfinished, but it was still a very nice play. Super atmospherically and aesthetically pleasing, and I appreciated the unexpected twists in the story.

Would I recommend this game? It's a tough question that I really went back and forth on.

The positives are very positive: the art is beautiful and the creators clearly made this with a great deal of passion. They made some risky choices in terms of genre-switching (which many of the negative reviews comment on if you want to read more) which DID make me want to see what they would do next. Moreover, the dialogue choices were extremely well thought out: there was no "good answer" "neutral answer" "bad answer" choices. Instead there was more nuance to it: some characters needed more threatening, others more buttering up, and so the navigation of social situations was really compelling to manage...even if it was relatively illusory (as failing seemed impossible).

The negatives, however, are that fundamentally, while I appreciate the risks they took, for me, they didn't work out, and the plot -- while it built intrigue well -- didn't have enough pay off.

So I, personally, wouldn't recommend it as a 'this game is amazing and will change your life' game; I WOULD recommend it as a 'you might not like it, but it's worth trying' game. Do with that what you will.

Absolutely gorgeous game with an amazing soundtrack. The story is promising, with compelling characters and an interesting story of political intrigue. The first three acts of the story are great, however I believe it falls off right at the end of Act 3, where it then proceeds through the fourth and fifth acts which have a way different feel than the Acts before. These last three acts are also much shorter than the previous. I was able to get 2 hours each from Acts 1 and 2, however 3, 4, and 5 were collectively about 2 hours.

The ending feels abrupt and rushed, if not just a bit disappointing, however it is obvious that the story is cut off the way that it is to leave an opening for a sequel, combined with the fact that this was a Kickstarter game, making me wonder if they maybe ran out of funding for the last leg of development. Regardless, Tails Noir is a good game despite the shortcomings of the ending.

Found the story really engaging and the visuals and world beautiful, recommend if you like thoughtful, character driven games

I agree previous reviews. The game starts and getting good until chapter 3. After that story breaks apart heavily unfortunately.

Buuuut, after finishing the game I learned from credits that this was a Kickstarter game. It is so obvious that their funding couldn't give them enough to continue and finish the game properly. And because of the the effort put into the game I cannot bring myself to give it a thumb down.

I think the good sides have %51 lead in this game. But that means %49 bad sides as well. That's why you shouldn't expect good adventure all the way down to the end. Just a good first try attempt.

It's okay, the minimal use of music throughout the game makes it a very silent and lonely experience however. It would fit the theme it's going for but it often made me aware no music was playing and I was taken out of the game for this reason. The universe was interesting but the ending was very unsatisfying omg..

I really wanted to like this game! The art is gorgeous and the story has great potential. It feels like they had to cut it short. The ending didn't feel satisfying at all, and you reach it so quickly. I don't regret buying this game, but I wouldn't recommend it to others.

Man.. this kinda falls flat on its face after chapter 2. I enjoyed it for the most part but that ending was underwhelming. Beautiful world and tone, good music. I couldnt pay full price for it, but I enjoyed it. I plan on picking up the prequel

This game starts off so strong with a compelling murder plot, gorgeous artwork and gritty atmosphere. For the first half of the game, stealth and item use mechanics hold enough interest to carry the plot along. However, the second half of this game feels incredibly rushed, and said mechanics are nowhere to be found. Essentially, the game devolves into a visual novel in the second half, and in my opinion, the overarching story is not fleshed out enough to maintain the compelling gameplay the first half offered. The second half of the game, I felt as though I was going through the motions in hopes that the part I was playing was just a lull in the story.

I played this game when the demo came out and I loved it, I loved the detective concept and the narrative overall.

Now playing the full game, it feels unfinished. I really wanted to like this game but I don't think I can recommend it. I will be touching into spoilers with this review.

This game has an immaculate pixel art style. It's a wonder to look at. The backgrounds and designs of the characters carry this game by a lot. I like the main character Howard and the dynamic he had with Renee.

The game play is alright, I was honestly expecting more puzzles when it came to solving some of the game's mysteries.

I may be just nitpicking this but I found the UI design to be a bit bland. The menu felt meh, there's nothing that stands out. I wish more could have been done with the UI design. The Pause menu was a bit annoying. I'm used to pressing the escape key when I'm exiting out of the pause menu but instead I have to click on continue instead.

It feels like the first part of the game was more fleshed out than the rest of the game. the whole 2/3rd's just went into a completely different turn. I mean I don't hate the ending and the narrative. In fact, I was curious about it but It feels rushed. I didn't get much time with Clarissa at all and within just a short amount of time she turns around to becoming the good person of the story? And the part where Howard becomes one with the Artefact. It feels like it wasn't explored enough at all. I like the idea but I wish there was more too it.

And also the length of the game is an issue in my opinion, it was too short. I was expecting 20 hours or at the very least 10 hours but it only takes about 5 hours to finish. And for the price i don't think it balances out.

Overall, I wish this game took it's time to be developed more. The art style and vibes are great but its just lacking a little bit with it's narrative and polish.

The game starts off great, but it quickly grinds to a screeching halt halfway through, because it gets unceremoniously co-opted into a soapbox for the authors to broadcast their political views at expense of the narrative.

The crime lord that kills people and sells their meat to cannibals? Yeah that's supposed to be a good person who just makes funds to let underrepresented girls to escape the clutches of racism and patriarchy, complete with escaping a literal wall that was retconned into existence. The ends justify the means, you know? Besides, they were bad people that nobody will miss, like wife beaters (the first guy was a family man whose wife was worried sick).

And then it just ends with no resolution. I guess having the player witness the hamfisted grand-standing was the resolution.

Nice little indie game. Cool story actually.

Tails Noir is certainly an interesting game with excellent visual design, but the gameplay and writing leaves a lot to be desired. With that said, I can still recommend checking it out on sale.

Also, it's set in my hometown, so that's a plus.

A tragic tale of raccoon investigator Howard who is caught up in circumstances much bigger than himself. Somber, macabre and emotional, very engaging story and dialogues paired with beautiful art and a world that feels much bigger than just the immediate events the character is involved in.

Many of the mixed reviews of this game come from the fragmented and emotionally unsatisfying ending, but I think that ending was a great creative choice that the development of the narrative leads perfectly into. I don't want to give away too much of what happens, but the story has a theme of circumstances growing ever bigger and ever more complicated, to a point beyond what the protagonist is able to wrap his head around. We don't get a satisfying ending or the full picture, because Howard doesn't either. The game deals with a lot of pain and desperation, and I think in order to portray these themes well, you can't always wrap things up nicely. It's natural that, in order to feel good emotionally, we want a satisfactory conclusion, but very often in life, we don't get one and we're left hanging. And for me, being left hanging made it all the more impactful and gave me plenty to think about long after I had finished playing the game.

I bought the game at a discount, let's start with the fact that the game has very nice pixel art graphics, the plot is more or less normal. The ending of the game is JUST UNFINISHED. I don't know if the game has several endings or only one.. I give the game a score of 5.6 points and then for good design and graphics, the rest is very bad

I thought this was going to be a gritty murder mystery. Sure maybe a bigger conspiracy. It just fell apart.

Tails Noir is a tale of two halves. The first half of the game is a fantastic detective story with interesting stealth features, while the second half rapidly circles the drain. The developers obviously had deadlines, but I wish the later portions of the game didn’t feel so rushed and thrown together.

Honestly I love the game, in the time I've played I've already gotten very attached to the characters. I love what we've gotten to see of this world and this story, but the ending was such a disservice to such lovable characters. In general I wish it was longer as well, I wish I could've seen more of them all in the main game dearly, though maybe I just have a tendency to latch on to characters. I really truly hope that a sequel is made that answers all of the burning questions left raised, I can see the effort that was put into this even if it turned out messy and I still believe in this story and in the writers and developers of this wonderful game. Even with all of its flaws I still love it, and thank the creators for giving me this experience. And even with its story aside I loved the soundtrack and art style and appreciate the variety of styles used, even if game play itself was more lacking. I seriously hope more wonderful content is made for this series in one form or another, this beautiful narrative is worth working on, and this is a game worth playing.

I enjoyed the story and felt that it had a strong start. However, it loses all of its momentum in Act 4 and 5. You learn at the end of the game that none of your choices really matter. Motivations for some organizations are never fleshed out. Characters who seem relevant just disappear later. It makes me wonder if this game was supposed to be larger and longer but got cut short due to time and budget.

While the mystery, characters, and world building was good, I really did not care for the ending. It is pretty dark even by noir film standards. I also found many sections with zero background music. In a game without voice acting, that was pretty startling. You would think someone would grab some royalty free slow jazz music from the 30s or 40s to include at least. However, the jazz music was often pretty good and set a mood for the game.

I hate giving this game a negative No but would struggle to get it a really positive Yes. If Steam had a five star rating system, I would rate this game as a three. Buy it on deep sale, if you like noir films, pixel art, or detective games.
