Basic Puzzle Game with a very serious setting bug
What this game is:
A basic puzzle game where you place items on a gridmap in order to destroy rolling balls that move towards your red zones. In that sense, it could also be considered a tower defence game, except it works more like an automated defence situation with a logical outcome. How does it work?
You place various defence items (canons, traps or mines) in or around the path of the rolling balls in order to destroy all of them. If only one of these gets to your red zones, then you are defeated. There are 50 setups you need to solve in order to finish the game. Progressing through the game, situations will become more complex with more varied items available in order to defend your red zones. You set your defences up, and wait to see if your setup will destroy all of the balls. If not, try again. How does it perform?
This is an easy game to play, you place your items with your mouse and then wait to see if you succeded in finding the solution to a given level. There is a bug however with the window resolution options that may prove very ennoying, and there does not seem to be an easy solution to it. The game is very basic, and the 50 levels will provide some gameplay, about 3 hours would be my guess for most people. The good points:
Simple and easy game. Easy Achievements to be had. Takes less than 100 MB on your HD, and will run on a 10 years old PC. It works on the Steam Deck, I personally finished the game on mine, by default you will be using the excellent trackpad of the Steam Deck in order to play. The bad points:
The game is very basic and does not provide a high level challenge. There is a BUG with the screen resolution settings when you play on the Desktop. In my case it made the game completely unplayable and no amount of uninstalling and trying to tweak the Steam Cloud saves helped me. I had to resort to finishing the game on my Steam Deck which worked fine. I asked for help, but the devs do not seem to be taking care of the game anymore. My take on this:
This is a very basic game that may provide the casual gamer some time killing fun and some easy Achievements. BEWARE of the screen setting bug!!! Do not touch the settings or you might end up cursing Yutaka for not being there anymore. Buy this game only if seriously discounted.Trap Defense is a simplistic hybrid of the tower defense and block placement/pathing puzzle genres... heavy on the block placement. You're presented with a low poly/minimalist mobile app looking puzzle grid and you can see where various boulders etc will roll to their targets... the goal is to move turrets around, then hit "start" and hopefully if you did your job right, your turrets will shoot all the boulders before they hit the targets. Probably less involved than mobile apps like Angry Birds, but this is a paid, for-profit product on Steam.
One important note is that even though this is an amateur project, it does seem to be sincerely and genuinely made. I couldn't find any flipped assets, plagiarism or any other kind of insincere actions from the developer, but unfortunately genuine intentions alone are not enough to produce a brilliant PC gaming experience.
From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard.
The game features lazy minimalist/untextured low-polygon "retro" assets and visuals, making this look like a barely functional 3D game from the early 1990s. The lack of textures is a method that lazy devs often use to disguise their lack of talent/interest in doing the graphics properly and trying to disguise it under the name of "art", or "We made it look bad on purpose", which really isn't something gamers should have to put up with. It's unclear why the developers weren't willing to arrange high quality, high polygon count contemporary assets and high resolution textures for the game. It looks bad as a result of their decisions, and that's just another reason to avoid it.
The developers didn't design the game for modern gaming PCs, as such the display resolution caps out at 1080p, a very low resolution that became mainstream back in 2006 and became obsolete when 4K entered the mainstream in 2014. The game simply won't look right on modern gaming displays due to this failure on the part of the developers.
The controls can't be customised because the game has such a dumbed down, simplified interface that it's just iPhone screen tapping stuff. The fact that the interface is this dumbed down might be seen as a problem in itself, however... this is a fairly shallow experience if you're the kind of gamer that likes to play games with deep, rich control schemes and interaction. You'll get none of that here.
This looks and feels like a mobile app, but it doesn't seem to have made it to the app stores. It's unclear why this was put on Steam instead of the app stores it seems to have been designed for. Maybe it was removed, maybe it was rejected by Apple and Google (they do have more rigorous quality standards than Valve does for Steam, after all).
Regardless, for all intents and purposes Trap Defense might as well be a mobile app, it has the same limitations and dumbed down qualities. It's impossible to recommend such a game to PC gamers. We don't spend all this money building gaming rigs so we can pretend they're iPhones and play games that might as well be mobile apps.
These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game.
The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 2 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 100,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected.
So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 100,000+ games on Steam?
Trap Defense is relatively cheap at $1 USD, but it's not worth it. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend. This is also competing with over 11,000 free games available on Steam, many of them far better than this paid product.
6/10
Temple of death
Nice little TD/puzzle game. Even if it looks like only flashgame / mobilware it contains enough interesting elements in each of the 50 levels. You have to prevent the rockballs hitting the red fields. Your support are cannons, traps, mines and spikes.
