Fantastic game and the VR port was much better than expected. Overall, we LOVE the game and have been playing daily for weeks. There are definitely some glitches we've run into however... one time the game thought we built a city, but we were disconnected mid turn. Upon returning, the game thought the city had been built and we were capped at 4, although only 3 were on the board. Controller sometimes stop responding in the game. There are a few other tiny examples, but wanted to point that one out.
Crossplay does work between SteamVR and Quest users. You have to join with the lobby code and voila.
i actually love this VR title.
I love Catan, and this is a nice easy way to get a game in without having to risk the neighbours calling the police on you for having someone over during these COVID times.
Fun for all ages, and easy to catch on if you dont know how to play.
community is also great!
Love to board game! This is about a 5 out of 10. Not great but not bad.
Good:
graphics are really cool, little flying birds that land in trees (small stuff that makes the experience cool)
How the game play is set up
Bad:
No customization (can’t change any of the game parameters ie scoring, map layout)
Glitchy. Without fail I’ll start a game with AI’s and it will tell me one of the players left and you start over (not the game itself but beginning all over again)
I recommend only if this is on sale.
Ok lets be real here. If you already know how to play Catan, what do you expect me to say? Needs balancing? It's Catan. With AI opponents or Online Multiplayer. In VR.
If you don't know how to play the board game I highly recommend you look up a video (There are a ton) on how to play the game, and watch a group play a game or two to figure out if this is for you. In my opinion the game is not for everyone. It can be slow at times but it is meant to be. A true grab a drink and chill while yelling about dice rolls and peoples lack of trading what you need because you forgot to place a settlement near goddamn sheep.
I only play with AI because I don't have friends who play or even like Catan. I own the board in real life but my family refuses to play with me, so I play this sad and alone. Even the AI refuses to trade with me when I need it most... Truly one of my favorite VR experiences so far. Good reminder of what fun times I COULD have with friends and family!
8/10
expected to enjoy this game since the game is fun irl but didn't find myself enjoying it...
i bought it at 50% off but to be honest it should be free since you can't even roll the dice yourself, you just click a button.
it feels very lacking in functionality compared to other VR games.
I haven't really played much as of this review and I'm sure the game is not perfect, but I have to say, the vr implementation of this game is absolutely beautiful and just spot on. Vr controls are almost perfect. Would love to see more board games ported to vr like this. Played with Oculus Quest 2.
This game DOES NOT let you play with your friends on multiple devices. It lumps you in a room with random people and there is no way to join a friends game if they're on a different headset. VERY VERY disappointing.
Claims to have cross-platform multiplayer but this is not true. There is no system in place to arrange games with friends. Do not purchase this game if that’s what you want.
bought this because it claims cross-platform multiplayer but there wasn't a way to play with my friends who have quest T:
I bought this hoping to play with my friends on the Oculus. While this game does support cross-play it does not support cross-play with friends.
I bought this because it advertised cross-play, but as of right now there is no way for me to join my Quest friends with my Vive. I really hope this gets sorted out soon.
I've purchased this game for Oculus Rift, Steam, and PSVR. The game itself is pretty great. The environments, the masks... The board... all great. Pretty flawless. The biggest issue I've run into has to do with the fact that I bought three licenses expecting to be able to easily connect cross-platform to play with family members. This is not the case. Sure, If I had three Oculus rifts, or three psvrs or three, oculus quests connected to Oculus link (how I use it on steam) I would get a list of who is online in that platform, but unless they've done a new update that I haven't seen yet you can't yet see or choose to connect to specific people on other platforms.
The connection to other players cross-platform is timing based and random so you might get paired with your friends/family members or some hodgepodge of other folks.
There are some great discord etc communities that try to mitigate this issue by setting up matches, via timing which is helpful for some, but in my situation since the cross-platform pairing is random I don't want to keep trying to match with people and quit games where I'm accidentally paired with the wrong people, thus frustrating the people I match with... Further the discord groups will blacklist you if you pop in and out of games on people :(
What I'm hoping for is that the Devs institute either some sort of cross-platform lobby that allows you to to connect to specific users on other platforms as well in your games or to institute a cross-platform friends/ cross-friends so you can see the specific people/accounts on other platforms you want to game with. Until that happens (don't know if it will) I'll have bought 2 licenses for essentially no purpose :(
As it is I'll say yes buy it if you just want to play catan in VR but if you want it for my specific purposes it's kind of a bummer. If this situation is remedied I would anticipate buying a few more licenses in the future for friends in other states who use htc vive etc.
Advertised as cross-platform, but you can not invite your friends from another platform. Don't expect to play this with your friends that are using a different platform. It's only cross-platform on random matchmaking. Bad marketing.
+It's The Popular board game CATAN in VR!
+Fun!
+Multiplayer
+Nice Scenery while playing
-Price for content
-Not enough Players in Multiplayer
-Other games (Table Top Simulator) Have this and more, meanwhile work multi-platform.
-Doesn't have Expansions, or more than 4 player board.
2.5/5
*This Would Be Neutral If It Was An Option*
A Good remake/port of a board game however sadly it seems a little muted as there is not a large playerbase, and other games out for VR have the same game in it, only allow play-ability multi-platform. Also the price for only getting the base game is kind of much. I would definitely recommend it to people who love the game and want to support it, however for those who just want to play it every now and then, I'd recommend staying away from it.

Love the game. its fun, smooth, and simple to play. my one BIG con (and single most frustrating thing) about it tho is when you play vs the AI. If the AI has numbers that you are not on ,ie if you have # 3 4 5 6 with towns on them but dont have any on 8 9 and 10, the AI will have full rounds where its only 8 9 and 10 are rolled. i get it if it happens one full cycle around the board but when its muliple in a row if makes me wonder if the dice are being truly randomized. lastly the AI WILL PICK ON YOU with the robber. i have had games where the robber was dropped on my tiles 6 times in a row and i lost cards every time. This happens even when im losing by a lot.
i feel that the developer needs to address this and make everything an even playing ground.
other than that this game is great and fun to play with friends
Honestly, this games good.
You have good visuals, good tracking and an easy way to control your trades as well as whats on the board.
If you're playing with friends, this game is a blast and one of the best ways to play catan.
That is, if you're only interested in the base version of catan and its streamlined.
But honestly the big problem with this game is that there is no playerbase. There is no option to play the game without a VR headset even though the option would increase player numbers. The amount of my friends that actually own VR is about 5 to 10 percent.
Id recommend this game if it changed somehow, and got a larger playerbase. But in the meantime, I think I would recommend table top simulator and playing that, especially since you have base catan, as well as all the expansions, and you can play with your friends that dont have VR as well. The only thing you lose out on is the streamlined experience and user interface.
Edit: Since you dont understand what im trying to say, is that because there is no option for non vr players to play, it will have limited success and population in comparison to a game such as table top simulator :)
Catan VR is a faithful recreation of the best-selling board game of the same title. Menus are intuitive and crisp, and the animated boards are fun to look at. Online works flawlessly; I was able to connect to my friends almost immediately and play a near two hour game with zero problems. This is, without a doubt, the best recreation of Catan on steam. Fully worth the price for both fans and new settlers alike.
Do not be put off with any notion you might have in regard to board games of this type being beyond your comprehension. Before playing Catan for the first time, or any complex board game beyond a standard game of monopoly, i put myself firmly in that bracket of fear.
The tutorial goes too quickly for the first timer, so your best off glancing over the basics and firing up a game against the AI. It's extremly easy to figure out what's happening as you go along, then going back to the tutorial to to see what all those development cards were doing, the way resources double up, multiple in relation to roads and settlements, champion points, longest roads, ports, knights...
Don't get me wrong, i'm sure there's experienced players looking at my simplistic view of the game thinking there's far more to it. Either way if a luddite like myself can grasp it within the hour, there's nothing to fear.
Recommended for the board game newbs.
Very well done! I'm a big fan of Catan, but playing it in real life is hard because of all the set-up and clean-up. This game solves that nicely, and speeds up gameplay significantly. I like all the customizable options too. Great fun! Please add Seafarers expansion as DLC.
As a person who has never played Settlers of Catan before, this was a great way to play my first game of it. Graphics and controls were well presented. I do wish that the reference table with the different structures you can build would highlight the structures that you have the resources to build. This would make things a lot easier for newer players who aren't so familiar with the resource requirements. Otherwise, other than a few minor bugs I've noticed I have no complaints.
Catan! very crispy and clear. I bumped up my graphics settings and I can read everything without experiencing a performance hit on my Vive pro. Well optimized, excellent sound effects, crisp graphics.
