Touhou Luna Nights is a Metroidvania title with a heavy emphasis on exploration and action.
Developed by Team Ladybug, creators of multiple fantastic action games thus far.
Story
“...Now, let’s begin my world.”
Remilia Scarlet, head vampire of the Scarlet Devil Mansion sends her maid Sakuya Izayoi with no warning to a world much like Gensokyo, but not quite.
A world full of strange places, filled with strange youkai and her time manipulation sealed.
What could Remilia’s end game be...?
What's special about this game
・Time stop system from character's Ability and Gimmick maps that use special abilities like time stop.
・Adapt the "graze" system of the Touhou Project into a 2D game, giving you a sense of tension in approaching to the enemy.
・Graphics that bring out the appeal of Touhou world, such as attractive dot Graphics.
A word from the publisher
Team Ladybug began with "Pharaoh Rebirth," continuing with other enjoyable games including "Resurrection of Beldia" and "Shin Megami Tensei SYNCHRONICITY PROLOGUE."
Since, I have been waiting in anticipation for their next project.
This time, they have created a fan fiction game based off the world-renowned "Touhou Project."
From the background to the character's movements and various skills, one can feel the creator's passion for games and love of the Touhou project.
While it has a Metroidvania style, the game can easily progress without the insistence of repeat elements or collecting items. This has resulted in a spectacular game born from the game production skills cultivated by Team Ladybug.
And I personally want to highlight the beauty of the anime sprite.
You can see the attention to detail the creator put into not only the leading character's movements, but the effects and enemy characters.
Touhou Luna Nights is not only for Touhou fans but one that can be enjoyed by anyone who loves 2D action games.

you know a game like this really shows why it would be scary for everyone to just say "yeah screw spell card battle rules"
Short and sweet Metroidvania. The developers clearly love Touhou and that love shines through in every aspect of the game. The time stopping power is fun, really fits the character, and is quite different to other games in the genre. Platforming and combat feel good, soundtrack is good as well. The pixel art is great. I did find a couple of problems with it though (these may not be problems to you):
- The game assumes familiarity with the characters from Touhou 6, and if you don't know that game then you won't understand the characters, their relationships, or the world.
- There aren't enough warp points. If you don't know exactly where to go next, you'll probably find yourself repeatedly backtracking through challenging platforming sections just to figure out which previous dead end you can now progress past.
- The final extra boss, unlocked after the first ending, is a big jump in difficulty and I personally wasn't interested in putting in the time to beat it. But then it is fitting, since the proper Touhou games always have an optional extra difficult stage after clearing the main game.
On the whole I'd probably recommend it to Touhou fans, but would hesitate to recommend it to a general audience. Either way I'd say wait for a pretty deep sale though, £13.99 is quite a high price for this game.
Sakuya My Beloved
incredibly late to the party but absolutely terrific metroidvania
I'm not a savant of the genre so I'm just thinking of it as "A Game" but I liked the difficulty, every fight in the game felt good, outside of some vaguely annoying enemies I remember coming across it's a great romp
plus seemingly a lot of replay value as well as a boss rush mode!
Fun mechanics (being able to stop time is actually very well integrated so it isn't OP yet still feels very fun). The story isn't too crazy but it isn't really the focus of the game. The boss fights are super fun while exploration is decently fun.
Very interesting metroidvania, you can slow down or stop time and not only that you can throw knives and stand on them, throw several at once before time continues and hit enemies multiple times. Perhaps the most unique thing is that to reload ammunition you have to get close to the enemy projectiles with time stopped but to heal yourself you have to get close to them with time slowed down or if you are very skilled in real time.
The game provides text dumps in place of tutorials, but doesn't seem overly concerned with players understanding its lore and characters. I haven't a clue who these people are or what's going on or why the girl in the sailor fuku should be able to control time and can't. I think the Overwhelmingly Positive rating has to be fanboys doing their thing, because I wasn't hooked at all.
Overall I liked the gameplay and bosses.
The problem is the map design. (tl;dr: it desperately needs more warp-points)
It happened several times, after I found an upgrade, that I thought "Hey, I can use THIS at THAT door/obstacle!", only to find out there is ANOTHER door/obstacle for which I dont have the upgrade yet.
And then you have to traverse several rooms back to the next warp-point, meaning you have to deal with the enemies etc A SECOND TIME.
I would have continued if the map had more warp-points.
So if you insist on exploring, save it for the late-game.
The gameplay is quite addicting, especially the whole time stopping and having to use the gadgets to your advantage. The map and puzzles are well designed, and the music is amazing as well, definitely recommend this game!
One of the best Touhou fangames i have played
Very fun action game, with especially great boss battles and soundtrack. The difficulty curve is a bit messy and there are a couple of annoying glitches(I got thrown out of bounds a couple of times when dealing with obstacles), but the game is fun enough to make you not cara bout it
Nice and short game with great gameplay and great boss fights. Would absolutely recommend to anyone looking for a shorter game.
Underrated gem
Never was into Touhou, or metroidvanias (despised them up to this point), but discovering this game might be a turning point for me.
Great music, simple to follow story, amazing art, enemy desing is dope (looking at you minigun fairies) . I'd even say platforming is more challenging for me than boss encounters, no doubt.
I always had a power fantasy: throwing a bunch of knives at high speed and stopping time. Game is just perfect fit. Team Ladybug made something great, won't be missing on what's coming next from them!
I would recommend this game to anyone looking for a quick, replayable game in the style of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, which this game has taken clear inspiration from. The most important thing about this game is that it pushes time stop and time slow mechanics as far as they can go for this style of game, both for platforming sections and fights. I think the Graze feature is genius and rewards you for playing risky, just barely avoiding enemies and attacks. You will get into a flow during boss fights where you understand which attacks you can easily get HP/MP back on, and it feels very rewarding to learn their patterns.
Best game ever ✍✍✍
A decently challenging Metroidvania-lite, with fun main gimmick.
Games can be challenging and rewarding (Im huge fan of all souls games and most big soulslike) or challenging and annoying.
This one is in the second camp.
I played Touhou after brilliant (and very easy) Afterimage. And in comparison it is small, mediocre and way to annoying.
Overall ok, but not for me and I would not recommend it.
Basically the peak of Touhou fan games or very close to it, reccommend it for metroidvania or Touhou fans, heavily reccommend it if you're a fan of both. The price isn't much but if you find it too much you can wait for a discount.
Amazing music, cool gameplay, short and quaint :)
Would play again 👍
"too easy" xD
Marisa is harder for me than the last boss
Cool Metroidvania, The time mechanics are sick.
Amazing game, the song remixes are made with love. Graphics seems nostalgic, fluid and well made, and the gameplay mechanics are perfect. I enjoy everything about this game.
One of my personal favorite metroidvanias. Doesn't require Touhou knowledge to enjoy, but if you do know about Touhou you'll enjoy the story a bit more. The time manipulation mechanics are super fun to mess around with. Only complaint I have: It's on the shorter side for metroidvanias.
Very nice metroidvania with BANGER music and very satisfaying gameplay, especially the bosses.
Highly recommendable
Oh boy, I sure do love being the maid of the SDM, I sure hope I don't get kidnapped and forced to fight to the death.
Reimu is gay for Sakuya
as the second metroid vania i've played (first one i've played with sentience and not auto piloting and being a child)
this game is really good, the art style does wonders to the seeing experience, and the soundtrack is really stinking good, the game was really really fun, and 100%ing the achievements wasn't atrocious like pretty much every other game i play, 10/10
Quite a fresh spin on battle mechanics for "classic" castlevania style game. Love it.
The gameplay is SOOOOOO good and the graphics SOOOOOOO beutiul. It's short, it's good, recommend
fun
Imagine hollow knight but you can stop time, slow time, and throw knifes like Dio. All of that and your a cute girl!
Way more fun than I expected, especially once I got into the groove. I 100%'d in 13.7 hours, and it was worth it the whole way through.
live out the fantasy of throwing multiple chainsaws at your boss
