Fun traversal, wacky Ratchet & Clank like guns, and just wants you to have fun all the while wrapped up in late 90s- early 2000s summer nostalgia. I like this a lot.
Vibes like crackdown, and saints row 3 open world fun. If you like that stuff, you'll have fun jumping around in Sunset Overdrive.
Third person version of Bullet storm. The Pc version has it's hiccup the cpu. Stunning nothing short of it😎😎😎
Great game plays really well on SteamDeck. Great gameplay and soundtrack.
I believe it took me 2 days to complete the entire story and missions and that was back around 2021
Sadly after reinstalling on March 22th, 2025 i got hit with the save file corrupted and I backed up my save on my previous gaming laptop and forgot to put it on a google drive. I don't know why that bug is still here and I swear I got a massive set back.
Crashes to Desktop, anytime you use the menu.. Every time you boot the game, youre met with a "corrupted save data" warning, even the very first time you run the game, having never played it before..
Broken Port
I remember wanting to play this, but stopped buying Xbox consoles, because I had 3 of them red ring on me. The era feels early 2000s, and damn do I miss it.. But the gameplay does too, and it feels old, but not in a memorable, fun, retro way. The aiming, shooting, and movement mechanics feel outdated.
A repetitive but overall fun game
This game is an underrated Gem while the gameplay gets quite repetitive as missions often are identical and have only so many ideas
The story is fun and doesnt take itself seriously
The music pumps you up (especially the dubstep)
The world itself is really fun to explore to the point collecting I found more enjoyable then killing enemies over and over
Be warned as I said I struggled at times with how often missions just say kill enemies thats it
So this is a great game overall, but it keeps crashing every time I go to manually save it. Autosave works fine but I would like to make a manual save. Help?
Absolutely amazing!
It's a crime how unpopular this game is. The gameplay is a perfect mix of joy and relaxation, the performance is great, and the visuals/effects are stunning; this is the kind of game that I love.
Plus, the game has plenty of different and creative weapons that feel so good; some are very addictive and make you want to keep killing monsters over and over again. The movement and grinding mechanics make the game incredibly fun and an absolute must-play for me.
Sunset Overdrive
An Absolute Blast from Start to Finish!
If you love fast-paced action, over-the-top chaos, and a game that never takes itself too seriously, Sunset Overdrive is an absolute must-play! This game is pure fun distilled into an explosive, neon-soaked playground of destruction.
The movement is silky smooth—grinding, bouncing, and wall-running across the city feels effortless and keeps the adrenaline pumping. The combat? Pure insanity! The creative, wacky weapons make every battle a spectacle of explosions, color, and energy. And the humor? Absolutely top-tier. The game knows exactly what it is and embraces the absurdity with hilarious dialogue, fourth-wall breaks, and a story that keeps you smiling the whole way through.
The world of Sunset City is vibrant, full of life (and mutant chaos), and encourages non-stop movement. Whether you're taking down ridiculous monsters, pulling off insane parkour combos, or just enjoying the phenomenal soundtrack, there’s never a dull moment.
If you’re tired of the same old open-world games and want something fresh, wild, and unapologetically fun, Sunset Overdrive is a no-brainer. It’s easily one of the most underrated gems out there. Do yourself a favor—grab a can of Overcharge and dive into the madness!
10/10 – Worth every penny and tine to play on!
Get Goo Goo ALU!
A odd hit for something so off
Sunset Overdrive is definitely one of the most odd kinda games I've played, but it was fun for what I got. Full of a tone of 4th wall breaks and easy but dumb humor Sunset Overdrive dose have some fun weapons, occasionally funny dialog, and smooth parkour system (if you can get past the jank of unlocking it). Sunset offers a nice lil experience from Insomniac witch explains the love for uniquely stupid but fun weapons that range from a vinyl record launcher to a literal propane launcher, or a cell phone gun that shoots decoys (there are plenty more but it be better to just play the game your self). My only gripe is that the grind for the currency to acquire new weapons can be not only a pain, but a extreme drag on pace since the three enemy types have different weaknesses.
Sunset Overdrives OST isn't much to talk about with most of the actual background music being super copyright ether skater, or rebel music (I mean it's Microsoft so they could afford it). It really dose feel like it's just the same song again and again while exploring the world and it makes hearing something new a bit far apart, but i can't say any of them were that memorable except the song that plays during the Buck National Challenges (the banjo goes really hard at one point making it super worth having to attempt the Insomniac high score achievements).
The game doesn't really have a online presence besides high scores during the challenges that are found across the map, but there is a supposed multi player tower defense mode and the player character makes a jab about it when talking about names witch is most likely discontinued as most obscure multi player stuff. The tower defense thing can also be done in single player and is also used as a narrative push about three times. The roughest part of Sunset Overdrive is going to have to be the grind... the absolute WORST part of the game. Every game needs a small grind witch I get, but the prices of some of the late game weapons is so unbelievably high that I manged just to beat the game with one of the pricey expansion weapons. If you think just buying the weapons is bad you also have to level them up so they can perform a bit better and I know what your thinking Insomniac made a few of the Ratchet and Clank games so the grind won't be THAT BAD right? WRONG! The grind to max out gear and certain perks is a absolute nightmare from grinding 2 different types of currency to get weapons and cosmetics respectively one being almost mandatory to have any kind of fun. The only fun thing about the grind is the Banjo and Kazooie inspired world collectibles. I say this because it gives you a good reason to keep exploring the world and to keep your eyes peeled.
So you might be asking why do I recommend this even though I made most of this sound bad or mid at best. It's just fun, easy said. Most of the problems stop being problems, the stupidest 4th wall heavy, meta/ game rule joke relying story script, and the grind to focus on smooth movement, silly weapons, and just turning your brain off and remembering 2014 was a goofy ass year for some people. It's a good game to play if your feeling REALLY bored or just want something different from the modern day slop most triple A companies give us now.
I hope you enjoyed reading and buy this game
P.S. We lost the sequel for this game to the recent spider man games :(
I haven't even played this game in a long time, but I felt like writing a review.
It is CRIMINAL how few people have even heard about this game. It's combat is so fun and it's so obvious that these are the same people who made the Playstation Spiderman game.
Oh the character customization is also great, my character is a baddie.
Great colorful, over the top game. It's got unique weapons, story and A LOT of unique characters. Though the game can be a bit cringe at times, it has great humor and the cringe adds to the vibe. A great fast pace shooter which uses parkour and rail grinding to get bonuses and add to the great feel.
During a boss fight the boss became unkillable. Falling off the platform, dying, or restarting puts you in an infinite loop of falling through portals. After abandoning the mission and watching the unskippable cutscenes and trying again multiple times the bug occurred every single time. after alt-f4ing out of frustration and turning on the game again my save file was gone...
I'm so sad this sold like ass and we never got a sequel, this is one of my absolute favourite games out there just because of how fun combat can be. ALSO THE MULTIPLAYER WHICH IS THE BEST PART GOT BUTCHERED IN THIS VERSION WHAT THE HELL :lilimsob:
Easy 10/10 game; Flawless movement and combat
- Cutscenes are great quality and most of them feature your fully voice-acted custom character with a lot of animation.
- Movement and traversal is industry-leading excellent, it feels so good to traverse this world I refuse to fast travel even when the game strongly suggests it.
- Plenty of unique/funny weapons, from exploding teddy bear launchers to bowling balls.
- Very fun and memorable story and side missions.
- Very impressive amount of appearance customization.
- Very funny sense of humor, on par with things like the borderlands franchise and sometimes even surpassing them.
- UI is extremely well done and very pleasing to look at.
- Easy enough to 100% the game if you're into achievement hunting, took me around 40 hours or so.
- Zero consequences to dying. In fact it gives you one of many awesome respawn animations.
- Rock solid optimization, zero bugs/glitches or crashes.
- References and easter eggs up the ass.
- Plenty of collectibles and challenges.
- Soundtrack that transports you right back to the golden age of the 2000s.
- Fully accessible offline.
- There's literally 3 types of enemies in the entire game, and the difficulty is laughable.
- Underwhelming weapon/gameplay customization.
- Limited resolution options, I was forced to play with some letterboxing with my main monitor at 1920x1200...
- There used to be online coop multiplayer back on xbox but it was removed, which guts the total time you'll be spending in the game.
- There are basically zero mods for this game, which removes part of the appeal of gaming on a PC, given that this game feels kind of experimental in a lot of ways it would have been super awesome to be able to create custom weapons or allow us to fix the aforementioned letterboxing for example.
- There's a weird save corruption bug that persists through restarts. Start a new game twice and leave one of the saves corrupted permanently instead of deleting it to get around this. Otherwise fixing this requires disabling steam cloud autosave.
In this day and age of MTX-infested, progression-focused, always-online, poor-quality trash that gets the spotlight, games like this are a great reminder of the real value of fun and should be experienced by everyone.
The only thing that will really annoy you about this game is that there is no sequel.
Very easy recommendation, especially on sale.
Sunset Overdrive is a bit of gem. Well worth a play. I've been hoping for a sequel for years!
This is one of the most fun games I have ever played in my life....
Favorite game ever, Fun movement with an amazing world to run in.
I dunno, man... I played this A WHILE ago, and it just didn’t have that “click” I was looking for to keep me hooked. It’s not a bad game, and honestly, I probably would’ve loved it a few years ago, but playing it felt more like a chore than a game and I HATE chores, lmao.
It’s a shame because the game does have some promise, but it just wasn’t for me. Sorry...
Tried it, found the tone and humour more grating than fun. Not childish potty humour, just too 24/7 off-the-wall wacky. Plus gameplay being cut down into such bite-size missions and hundreds of collectibles feels like a chore.
Maybe I'd have liked it 10 years ago.
We need more games like this!
- Funny/meta story (It's almost too bonkers)!
- Satisfying traversal that makes me confused as to why fast travel even exist!
- Zany weapons that Insomniac absolutely slaps at making!
- Exclamation point!
- The DLC isn't as good storywise, feels more like unecessary filler, but is there for those who want more reason to kill stuff while jumping around like a madman (also, the DLC involving the fizzco bots is hair-pullingly difficult, so make sure to master the traversal and weapons to make things easier on yourself, cause I did not, and I got my cheeks clapped multiple times).
- The ball mission in the DLC involving with the fizzco bots was not fun, and almost made me flatline from how sharply timed it was (It's not hard, it's just way too little time to complete the mission, especially with how oddly the ball handles, at least for me)
- I didn't get to leave the city to fend for itself (curse you protaganist getting attached to characters who aren't that interesting to me)!
- Needs a sequel! Pick up the phone, Xbox!!
Finally playing this in 2025 lol.
Great weapons,
Amazing traversal,
Hillarious writing
Creative missions.
This may be THE BEST game I have EVER played. And i dont mean that lightly. This game has so much going for it. The movement is superb, the gameplay is even better, and some parts of this game are actually really good. The fact that the game is self aware that it is, in fact a game just makes it better in my opinion. I could not recommend this game more to anyone reading this. Buy Sunset Overdrive. It is a masterpiece.
Movement mechanics are a bit clunky tbh
horrid, extremely self aware writing combined with brilliantly designed movement and combat mechanics = a great game
Normally I do not like the "millenial" humor that a lot of media has now, but this is a game that knows what it is from the get go and embraces it poking fun at video game logic and other stuff. The story is kinda bland, but the gameplay and pure ridiculousness of everything more than makes up for it. Without this, we would not have gotten Spiderman PS4, which I enjoyed playing a lot. Overall, a short, but fun game experience that keeps you laughing and gives you the thrill of high speed movement.
8/10
The idea behind this game was a decent one - let's make fun of video games and have our game be extremely self-aware and be a lighthearted parody of other modern video games.
The execution though.... ugh. It sadly feels generic. Ironically, by trying to make fun of how boring modern video games can be, this game falls into the pit of being boring itself by trying too hard to pop out.
It borrows too many ideas and as such, none of them feel well developed or thought out and are more so just kinda in there because, "Hey. It's a funny joke."
I feel this game would have worked a lot better if instead of trying to a be a super stylistic third person shooter and brawler in an open world if it was instead more self-contained. Maybe be a bit linear with missions or different levels. The open world despite all the colors and styles feels rather bland. I mean, if you were to desaturate the colors in the mutants and the overall world, nothing would be really changed as there is still just this overall lack of substance.
Not to mention but the voice acting and character design is off-putting. I don't know how else to phrase it - the characters just look weird. And the voice-acting feels like the actors were, well, kinda umcomfortable with what they reading. I don't know - just feels like they didn't want to be there.
The gameplay itself - it's okay. The shooting works. The rail sliding works. Everything works, but I can't say that it's fun to play. Nothing kept me grabbed and wanting to keep playing.
I played this game when it first came out on Xbox, and it still holds up today! This game has one of best movement systems in gaming. It's one of the only times I've actually ignored the fast travel system in a game due to just how fun it is to parkour around the city and collect items as you travel to the next mission. Additionally, the game has great stylized graphics, a thumping punk OST, and a surprisingly large amount of customization. The combat may feel a bit repetitive (especially near the end), but it's the movement you do during the fight that makes it fun. Definitely get this game, especially when it is dirt cheap on sale. This port has some issues, but as long as you tweak the settings before starting the game, you should be fine. Also, I recommend rushing through the main missions until you unlock the mid-air dash, as it allows you to travel around the city with amazing flow.
Besides the port being a bit botched, I don't have many critiques about the game itself. The defense missions and the trap system associated with it is probably the weakest part of the game. It just feels dull compared to the rest of the game, and spending time to select and place down traps just for a 3 minute defense always feels boring. The only other critique I have is the 2nd DLC (which I didn't even know the game had until playing through it again on PC) felt very annoying due to the health-sponge enemies and the awful sniper robots that ruin the flow of combat. However I will say the final boss of the DLC is probably one of the funniest I've experienced in quite awhile.
Simple but dynamic combat with a lighthearted comedic story. Great game on sale!
I'd say Sunset Overdrive stands out among its peers for its fun traversal and combat system. The story is decent, although it can be all over the place at times. However, the game does face some issues with corrupted file saves that can set you way back into your checkpoint, impacting progression. But this game is super fun and I would recommend it.
And yes, the game does work perfectly on the Steam Deck, though it says it's not supported.
Hi energy game that feels like THPS meets a 3rd person shooter and platforming. That's a lazy description but it's the best I can do! Great creativity with the missions and really fun aesthetic and LA-punk style soundtrack. Think Circle Jerks and not New Found Glory. Good stuff!
i can spend hours and hours and HOURS on end just traversing across the map and still not get bored. sony please. PLEASE revive this game
banger game, soundtrack compliments it perfectly.
Once you realize this is a game where you'll basically need to be moving all the time or you will die then it becomes a lot of fun.
And once you've mastered the moves you won't even touch the ground!
It's got some charm to it, but it's not worth the time. Just feels tedious to do anything in the game and it actually feel fun half the time. I was hoping the movement was more fleshed out and had some momentum to it, but overall it's kind of falls flat too me. It reminds me of sandbox games and ps2 3D platforms, but none of what it's trying to do captures the soul of those games.
A game ahead of its time, unfortunately it was exclusive to Xbox and the port to PC is bad, it has bugs that corrupt the save files.
great game, its a shame it corrupts your save file and completely throws all your progress and 7 hours of investment in the dumpster lol. I had a whole proper review planned but im not going to waste more of my time with this garbage of a port. I cannot recommend a game with a bug this game breaking that spoils the entire experience. I really wanted to finish this too man, unfortunate.
before experiencing the bug i would've given this like a 8.4/10.
5/10
It was one of the most beautiful open world games ive ever played. it is a good thing that the game is not too long and the side missions are not too repetitive. In the game, you both make parkour and fight zombies, humans and robots. i definitely recommend you to buy it while it is on sale
This game is great but I would not recommend anyone buy it due to game breaking bugs. Save files get corrupted and while the workarounds may work for some, this is not the case for everyone. I enjoyed this game when I played it a few years ago without any issues, but haven't been able to get around the save corruption since coming back to it. If you must buy it only do it on a steep sale, 75% at minimum
Fantastic and very unique! Enjoyed playing it originally on the XB1. Fun and addictive gameplay. Unfortunately, doesn’t support ultrawide and there is a very odd bug that involves a corrupted save file that isn’t mine. Game is still playable and I’ve not came across any major issues while playing. Overall solid PC port and is easily worth it especially when it’s on sale.
fun movement
fantastic character customization
definitely worth playing
Really such an underrated gem. Just recently finished the game, and I've got to say that it is an absolutely fun time. The movement is smooth, sound design is crisp, and the comedy is actually funny (especially for someone that enjoys humor prior to the woke epidemic). One the few games that I can just turn my brain off for and have a good time.
I also found myself really taking the time to deck out my character through all the various upgrades and customization options, which I believe is one of the game's strongest suits. Though it can be a bit difficult in the earlier parts of the game, your character's progression is relatively balanced.
I'll most probably revisit this in the future. Really, really such a gem.
Very fun movement and combat, the comedy is funny, its got kinda that saints row 3'ish type comedy. i didnt expect this to look as fun as it did in the trailers, cause most games hype it up just a little to much, but nah, this is actually peak. id reccomend full price or on sale, cause even at a 20 dollar pricetag its still worth it. Def reccomend :)
A great game but a terrible port that crashes alot and save files get corrupted alot
If u dont mind doing some workarounds and relaunching the game often then its def worth, and goes on sale for really cheap too
I always hear that this is a hidden gem for open world games and I have to agree. It doesn't really do anything new or extraordinarily well, it's just a fun time. The movement at first feels interesting, but as you play more it really opens up, and by the end of the game you're flying around the city and it feels great.
The combat in this game flows effortlessly and the story is amusing and does not get disappoint. 10/10
Sunset Drive is a dystopic action game that is open world with parkour game play elements. The game has funny moments and is more comedy than anything. I have played this through and probably will get around to another run one of these days.
This game is playable on a GTX 750 Ti but my GTX 1060 handles this game fine, I also played this on my Dell XPS 15 9570 with GTX 1050 Ti graphics and its very playable.
