What I thought would just be silly nostalgia-based entertainment turned out to be a very well-written game. I recommend it to anyone who wants to remember the early days of the Internet, have fun with all the funny content, explore a fictional operating system, download lots of interesting original music "illegally", etc., and while doing all this, discover the story of characters you'll become attached to.
Great story, loved looking through the pages even if it didn't bring me closer to the end goal.
A great find with the type of story that can only be experienced in video game format. A little short overall, and the various game stages never overstay their welcome. The game features mostly investigative point-and-click puzzles that are challenging without being too hard with plenty of humor, a solid story, and a great cast. Definitely sticks with you after the end too. As all the other reviews say, don't look at spoilers, it's best experienced blind!
A funny yet accurate depiction of the early internet forums, viruses, content, everything. Such a fun game for me to dive into without knowing much and so many cool things to see. I plan on getting the achievements I didn't now, and just mess around as well just because of how vast the "internet" inside the game is. The gameplay of it is pretty pleasurable, especially if you like puzzles, thinking, detective work and similar stuff. A huge recommendation from me to everyone in general!
Give it a shot if you like adventure games or stuff like yume nikki very trippy and fun and I really enjoy just chilling and surfing the web
Not only is it one of the most unique videogames, in more ways than one, that I've ever seen, but it executes these concepts flawlessly. There is so much personality, even though the only gameplay is just a simulation of browsing the web from a time that I haven't lived through. People who had used the internet in the 90s might even get nostalgic from this game.
I wasn't expecting there was going to be an overarching plot, and neither was I expecting to get this emotional from it.
My only problem is that I found it kind of hard to progress at some points, and I consulted a walkthrough a couple of times. Maybe that's kind of a me problem, I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed, and I kind of have to give the developer props for not insulting the players' intellignece.
Also, HOT DAD IS IN THE GAME! I WASN'T EXPECTING THAT EITHER!
It's a weird mystery game that's the perfect embodiment of pre-millennium internet. The only thing it's missing from back then is all the genitals...
So many surprise bits and bobs back then...
Anyway, try it out!
Despite the fact you never directly speak to another human or even see them (in person), Hypnospace Outlaw has one of the best cast of characters in any game I've played, as well as one of my favorite endings. It's also just in general one of the most immersive games I've ever played. One of those experiences where by the end you know it's world so well it becomes second nature (I accidently said beefbrain in real life without even thinking about it). I loved this game so much when I originally played it that I even learned basic HTML/CSS and made my own webpage, which I think speaks to it's quality and impact.
The less you know about where it goes the better, just play it.
Buy the game for the fun simulated internet, don't buy it for the puzzles.
The puzzles are SO specific, that it doesn't make sense how anyone was supposed to find out what to do. The game gives you tons of webpages, and expects you to know which specific link to click? Even with the Professor Helper part, I read from a webpage not to download it as it's a virus. Ok, I won't then. Turns out you need to in order to progress. Really?
Everything else is awesome, the soundtracks made, the webpage designs, the story, It's all awesome. If only the puzzles were too.
Dropsy was a blast, but this one is even better. I like the fact that this game doesn't mock a certain visual style, but rather recreates it quite accurately, while creating a set of characters that one thinks about after the game is over.

Web design is my passion
not just some nostalgia bait gimmick game. Genuinely really funny, great music, pretty good puzzles, and so many entertaining stories between characters that you just discover through naturally digging deeper into a community to find out more and watching peoples web pages evolve. Everything about this game and all of its side content has so much creativity, personality and humor behind it, 9/10
Played very shortly after playing The Talos Principle's DLC "Road to Gehenna". I want more of this. There is something magical and humanizing to me about stories around these sorts of digital communities. I don't know how to explain it, but to say that maybe growing up on the internet lends itself to dehumanization of others and even the self. Seeing stories like this makes it feel better and more okay to be alive while also not being perfect.
This game really captures early internet culture very well, and I loved the internet exploration gameplay. There are often multiple ways you can come across or uncover necessary content to moderate, using creativity and exploration to come across what you need as well as hidden secrets. The amount of side content not necessary to the main story is insane, and you feel rewarded every time you find a free wallpaper, song or secret file to add to your collection. Sometimes you see websites and people change overtime, adding to the lively internet feel. I loved digger deeper and deeper into underground internet territory, file sharing and hacker group stuff included. It would be best to go in this one blind, but I wouldn't hold it against you if you peeked at a guide when you are stuck after giving it a fair shot. Seriously cool game, it really is an amazing experience.
Hypnospace Outlaw is one of the most unique games I have ever played. The sheer levels of detail and content put into this product is astonishing. It can be very difficult but even me, who is pretty bad at puzzles, love this game. Definitely recommend to anyone who has an appreciation for the internet.
Amazing experience, I would highly recommend to anyone. Quite emotional with fully fledged out characters and a great atmosphere.
great game all around, very human
the ending hits pretty heavy considering the rest of the games tone
the mindcrash conspiracy that can be uncovered during the modern day epilogue is pretty interesting too since you have to dig through pages that were accessible during the whole game but not conveyed directly to the player
An ode to the internet that was.
This game replicated that feeling of being a teenager in the mid 2000's and browsing random peoples websites incredibly well, and told a very compelling narrative through the medium.
Rather fun game. Computer does a bit weird with the running of it, but that's not the fault of the game itself. A must-play for every enjoyer of 90's aesthetics (a demographic which includes me).
Hypnospace Outlaw is a perfect snapshot of a world that could've been, it perfectly emulates the utter chaos of the (then new) internet, it also perfectly emulates the greed and naivety of companies that, to this day, fuck users over for marginally higher quarterly profits.
But that's not what makes it special, the game is simply really, really well written, the characters on there are more real than anyone you've ever met on Instagram or Facebook or whatever new social media site they are using nowadays, there's happiness, whimsy, joy, and true, unfettered sorrow.
This will stick with me forever, I feel.

A short but very sweet game. I'm just barely old enough to remember this era of the internet, but I don't think that's necessary to enjoy this game. Ultimately I felt like Hypnospace reminded me more of the modern internet - trend-driven, actively unhealthy, and beholden to the whims of egotistical platform owners. And full of lovely people and beautiful art nonetheless :)
i love the uniqueness of building a world through searching through webpages!! music bangs. kind of peters out towards the end, especially if you are trying to 100%, but lovely otherwise
Masterpiece of game design, and an extremely immersive experience through and through. I can't recommend this game enough, though it might not be for everyone, if it is for you like it was for me you will have an amazing ride.
This game gets the Windows 95/98 look and feel and experience down so good that I would watch 10 Noclip documentaries on how the developer managed to get it working on MacOS
i cant play this often cause ill get sucked in and probably play for days straight trying to find everything. its very reminiscent of what the "old internet" and website forums used to look like back in the 2000's. phenomenal design, super cool. would reccomend
excelent game ! whatever you think you done always some more! is great!
One of the most creative games I've played in recent memory, and one that scratched an itch in my brain I didn't know I had. I experienced a few glitches here and there, and some stuttering I suspect that may have not been intentional on the game's part, but all in all I had a great time. 9/10
Beautiful game with a lot of soul, a lot of humanity, and a lot of nostalgia - brought back a lot of memories I didn't know I had - I was first online slightly after the period the game is set in [early to mid noughties] but it caused me to reminisce nonetheless
Jay Tholen can really do no wrong in the digital world, so I am not surprised to discover another of his projects (not that he made it by himself) was spectacular and exactly up my e-alley. Anyone who spent any amount of time whatsoever on the pre-social media Internet and/or has a fascination for it absolutely needs to play this game immediately. I lightly regret not getting to it until in my current "must finish every game in backlog" era so I undoubtedly rushed through it instead of enjoying it, but YOU do not have to make that mistake!
As a product of the 90's and 2000's internet, Hypnospace Outlaw is a wildly fun ride. If you are currently in your late 20's or early 30's at the time of this review, and you spent way too much time on the internet, you will get a kick out of this game
If you are ready to receive a dose of 90s internet nostalgia - a time where you never existed in the first place, this game is your PILL.
Nunca dou review de jogo aqui, mas esse eu preciso dar.
Uma obra prima de narrativa, character development, world building.
UM must play pra todo mundo que consegue tankar uma gameplay parada e monótona, mas que é fã de mistério e puzzle.
incredible game with so much exploration
Before playing this game, I was told to learn as little about it as possible and just go in blind. I was skeptical, "So are all games, surely this can't be so good it warrants reiterating that?" and thankfully I took a leap of faith and was shown just how wrong I was. This is such a good fucking game. Don't read up on it, don't watch your favourite streamer play it, just play it. Play this game right fucking now.
There are some games for me that you can just look at a store page, and immediately be convinced it's going to be good without needing to look further. There aren't many, but this game certainly was one of them, and it didn't disappoint.
The art style of the game is an obvious strong point. Combining all sorts of art styles found in the old internet with more classic pixel art to create a reminiscent yet still unique feel to the world of Hypnospace. Hypnospace itself also feels very expansive, with all sorts of pages to explore and rabbit holes to go down into, and all of these different pages interact and connect to other pages in a way that never makes a page feel isolated from the wider Hypnospace.
The gameplay compliments the expansive nature of Hypnospace too, with players tasked with finding violations of the Hypnospace laws with mostly little direction, encouraging you to explore the world. The game also has lots of puzzles that often involves you investigating multiple different pages and users to help in slowly uncovering what you need to look for. Most of the puzzles are very good though I will say that the last one is too convoluted and involves doing a lot of specific actions that have little to no indication that you are supposed to do them. I also want to touch on just how responsive the game is. As time passes in the story, almost all of the pages in Hypnospace change as well. Some of this is from various different events that happen in the story but some of this is also because of the violations you reported, or even other actions you take.
One part of the game I didn't expect to be so good though was the music. It is crazy the level of work they put in to create multiple bands within different made-up genres, often having several songs each. Like, if you go to the store page for this game's soundtrack, you will see what I mean when I say this game has A LOT of songs. It allows them to add another layer of depth to the individual pages as the music they use can tell you a lot about the kind of person the creator of the page is.
Overall, a unique, creative, and style-filled experience unlike most other games that try to replicate the feeling of the old internet, 8.5/10.
Delicious, yummy nostalgia oh god yes feed me more. This game has an insane amount of work put into it to recreate that old internet feeling while also putting a unique, surreal spin on it that makes it more interesting than just nostalgia baiting. Take your time clicking on everything and exploring all the wacky pages even if you aren't focusing on doing the main objective of the game. Be warned it can be pretty easy to get lost in everything by the end of the game so try to keep tabs on important stuff to prevent getting stuck.
It was fun! Definitely better with a mouse (first tried the demo on my Switch).
Really scratched my "investigation game" itch. The solutions to puzzles presented are sprawling and non-linear, so it was really rewarding when you solved a puzzle.
As someone who is not nostalgic for this time period, nor has much advanced tech know how, phenomenal game. Really fun albeit hard puzzles, and some amazing writing.
OH and the sheer amount of random incidental music for webpages you spend a dozen seconds on.
This game is absolutely incredible. The graphics, soundscapes, plot, everything is super entertaining and consistently interesting. Highly recommended!
Absolutely genius game, amazing concept and well executed. I first played this on the Xbox One with me and my brother taking turns and this was a absolute fever dream. Give this one a try its very unique.
I've never felt so much nostalgia playing a game for the first time. This is fantastic and absolutely a steal for the current price (~7$ CAD).
took to long to refund bad game
good
Granny Cream's Hot Butter Ice Cream
One of the most human video games I've ever played, with writing that exceeds pretty much everything else. It has dozens of characters that feel like real people, with a level of insight few games I've played delve into. It truly feels like a world you are interacting with, something full and great and could be explored endlessly.
POST 100%:
Definitely another one of my top games. The alternate history aspect of this game is relatively untapped, and i'd say no other games with fake OS are close to matching this one. The way this game pulls off the feeling of you being in an actively used internet social space while also being detached from it is greatly executed and unrivalled.
The game play in this is weak but that's because this game focuses on a narrative experience and exploring an internet space and uncovering its secrets. Not only is it fun to explore the pages people have, but it's also fun to play with some gadgets and toys the game gives to you, such as playing music, keeping virtual pets, going on scavenger hunts and so on.
I do believe this is one of those games where it's worth going in completely blind and experiencing everything fresh. I quite unfortunately spoiled myself years ago when I watched through Jerma and Vinny's playthroughs of this game but even then I have still had a decent amount of fun playing through this, and I believe many other people can.
i don't like writing reviews but i really can't stress enough how highly i recommend this game. from the visuals to the mechanics to the soundtrack, it's a beautiful time capsule from a slightly-different-but-still-nostalgic world. that's not even getting into the story, which i love so much. play this game!! do it!!
I loved this game and absolutely devoured it. One of those games where you wish you could immediately wipe it from your memory so you can play it again. Excellent story, great mystery, ideal if you're the kind of person who finds yourself regularly falling down black holes on the internet.
Nostalgic for a past that never existed? If so, you will love this game! The visuals, the music, the characters, everything is so well made. When you end up solving a difficult puzzle by connecting two dots together you feel so good! Also, I spent probably 3 hours of playtime just covering my desktop with stickers until it was perfect. I 100%'ed the game, taking my time and reading and interacting with everything, in just over 23 hours. Highly recommend if you are looking for a relaxing, extremely polished, and very unique experience!
