excelent game ! whatever you think you done always some more! is great!
One of the most creative games I've played in recent memory, and one that scratched an itch in my brain I didn't know I had. I experienced a few glitches here and there, and some stuttering I suspect that may have not been intentional on the game's part, but all in all I had a great time. 9/10
Beautiful game with a lot of soul, a lot of humanity, and a lot of nostalgia - brought back a lot of memories I didn't know I had - I was first online slightly after the period the game is set in [early to mid noughties] but it caused me to reminisce nonetheless
Jay Tholen can really do no wrong in the digital world, so I am not surprised to discover another of his projects (not that he made it by himself) was spectacular and exactly up my e-alley. Anyone who spent any amount of time whatsoever on the pre-social media Internet and/or has a fascination for it absolutely needs to play this game immediately. I lightly regret not getting to it until in my current "must finish every game in backlog" era so I undoubtedly rushed through it instead of enjoying it, but YOU do not have to make that mistake!
As a product of the 90's and 2000's internet, Hypnospace Outlaw is a wildly fun ride. If you are currently in your late 20's or early 30's at the time of this review, and you spent way too much time on the internet, you will get a kick out of this game
If you are ready to receive a dose of 90s internet nostalgia - a time where you never existed in the first place, this game is your PILL.
Nunca dou review de jogo aqui, mas esse eu preciso dar.
Uma obra prima de narrativa, character development, world building.
UM must play pra todo mundo que consegue tankar uma gameplay parada e monótona, mas que é fã de mistério e puzzle.
incredible game with so much exploration
Before playing this game, I was told to learn as little about it as possible and just go in blind. I was skeptical, "So are all games, surely this can't be so good it warrants reiterating that?" and thankfully I took a leap of faith and was shown just how wrong I was. This is such a good fucking game. Don't read up on it, don't watch your favourite streamer play it, just play it. Play this game right fucking now.
There are some games for me that you can just look at a store page, and immediately be convinced it's going to be good without needing to look further. There aren't many, but this game certainly was one of them, and it didn't disappoint.
The art style of the game is an obvious strong point. Combining all sorts of art styles found in the old internet with more classic pixel art to create a reminiscent yet still unique feel to the world of Hypnospace. Hypnospace itself also feels very expansive, with all sorts of pages to explore and rabbit holes to go down into, and all of these different pages interact and connect to other pages in a way that never makes a page feel isolated from the wider Hypnospace.
The gameplay compliments the expansive nature of Hypnospace too, with players tasked with finding violations of the Hypnospace laws with mostly little direction, encouraging you to explore the world. The game also has lots of puzzles that often involves you investigating multiple different pages and users to help in slowly uncovering what you need to look for. Most of the puzzles are very good though I will say that the last one is too convoluted and involves doing a lot of specific actions that have little to no indication that you are supposed to do them. I also want to touch on just how responsive the game is. As time passes in the story, almost all of the pages in Hypnospace change as well. Some of this is from various different events that happen in the story but some of this is also because of the violations you reported, or even other actions you take.
One part of the game I didn't expect to be so good though was the music. It is crazy the level of work they put in to create multiple bands within different made-up genres, often having several songs each. Like, if you go to the store page for this game's soundtrack, you will see what I mean when I say this game has A LOT of songs. It allows them to add another layer of depth to the individual pages as the music they use can tell you a lot about the kind of person the creator of the page is.
Overall, a unique, creative, and style-filled experience unlike most other games that try to replicate the feeling of the old internet, 8.5/10.
Delicious, yummy nostalgia oh god yes feed me more. This game has an insane amount of work put into it to recreate that old internet feeling while also putting a unique, surreal spin on it that makes it more interesting than just nostalgia baiting. Take your time clicking on everything and exploring all the wacky pages even if you aren't focusing on doing the main objective of the game. Be warned it can be pretty easy to get lost in everything by the end of the game so try to keep tabs on important stuff to prevent getting stuck.
It was fun! Definitely better with a mouse (first tried the demo on my Switch).
Really scratched my "investigation game" itch. The solutions to puzzles presented are sprawling and non-linear, so it was really rewarding when you solved a puzzle.
As someone who is not nostalgic for this time period, nor has much advanced tech know how, phenomenal game. Really fun albeit hard puzzles, and some amazing writing.
OH and the sheer amount of random incidental music for webpages you spend a dozen seconds on.
This game is absolutely incredible. The graphics, soundscapes, plot, everything is super entertaining and consistently interesting. Highly recommended!
Absolutely genius game, amazing concept and well executed. I first played this on the Xbox One with me and my brother taking turns and this was a absolute fever dream. Give this one a try its very unique.
I've never felt so much nostalgia playing a game for the first time. This is fantastic and absolutely a steal for the current price (~7$ CAD).
took to long to refund bad game
good
Granny Cream's Hot Butter Ice Cream
One of the most human video games I've ever played, with writing that exceeds pretty much everything else. It has dozens of characters that feel like real people, with a level of insight few games I've played delve into. It truly feels like a world you are interacting with, something full and great and could be explored endlessly.
POST 100%:
Definitely another one of my top games. The alternate history aspect of this game is relatively untapped, and i'd say no other games with fake OS are close to matching this one. The way this game pulls off the feeling of you being in an actively used internet social space while also being detached from it is greatly executed and unrivalled.
The game play in this is weak but that's because this game focuses on a narrative experience and exploring an internet space and uncovering its secrets. Not only is it fun to explore the pages people have, but it's also fun to play with some gadgets and toys the game gives to you, such as playing music, keeping virtual pets, going on scavenger hunts and so on.
I do believe this is one of those games where it's worth going in completely blind and experiencing everything fresh. I quite unfortunately spoiled myself years ago when I watched through Jerma and Vinny's playthroughs of this game but even then I have still had a decent amount of fun playing through this, and I believe many other people can.
i don't like writing reviews but i really can't stress enough how highly i recommend this game. from the visuals to the mechanics to the soundtrack, it's a beautiful time capsule from a slightly-different-but-still-nostalgic world. that's not even getting into the story, which i love so much. play this game!! do it!!
I loved this game and absolutely devoured it. One of those games where you wish you could immediately wipe it from your memory so you can play it again. Excellent story, great mystery, ideal if you're the kind of person who finds yourself regularly falling down black holes on the internet.
Nostalgic for a past that never existed? If so, you will love this game! The visuals, the music, the characters, everything is so well made. When you end up solving a difficult puzzle by connecting two dots together you feel so good! Also, I spent probably 3 hours of playtime just covering my desktop with stickers until it was perfect. I 100%'ed the game, taking my time and reading and interacting with everything, in just over 23 hours. Highly recommend if you are looking for a relaxing, extremely polished, and very unique experience!
Basically, GeoCities the video game. Better than it sounds.
This game is such a vibe, really does make you feel like your back in the 90's again. The OS is a bit to fast though, breaks emersion SMH.
Pretty fun little story game, can be overwhelming near the end tho
I never leave reviews but this game deserves one. I've never played a game like this - it is SO unique and will draw you into its world - I stayed up until 5am playing it when I first got it. And I NEVER do that. The world-building is like nothing I've ever seen before. My sincere thanks to the entire team who made this, because I feel like I'll never play something this good again. Just amazing. I've recommended it to everyone I know.
fun
One of the most unique games I've ever played. I wish it were a little easier to figure out where I'm supposed to be looking during the later stage of the game, but the decision not to tutorialise everything is refreshing.
Fantastic game but if you are not good at puzzles it is nearly impossible to complete without a tutorial. It can be very difficult to figure things out but overall the game is fantastic and very immersive
It's nice going back to simpler times and horrible web pages.
This game is too dang cool dude. As with so many games I just wish they could last forever. Gonna have a hole in my heart for a while where this game used to be because there is nothing else like it.
Really fun game of endless charm
An authentic, beautiful, and outright irreplaceable experience, Hypnospace Outlaw is an absolute MUST PLAY for anyone that seeks to tap into the full array of what video games are able to do and make us feel. It's not for EVERYONE, if you can't see yourself doing gameplay that LITERALLY consists of browsing various webpages, and messing with your simulated operating system's applications and files... Yeah, it's certainly a tough sell. As an enforcer your goal is to well, moderate this fictitious internet service's user base, and thus the "meat" of the game consists of that job, and for one insane contextual reason or another, you'll have to scour every bit of the web to find the smoking gun you need to report these 'wrong-doers' to HQ. So in otherwords, it's a big ol' puzzle game, and while i think the puzzles are actually VERY smartly designed for there to be a myriad of solutions to each case of varying difficulty... Yeah no matter how good puzzles in games can be, they're NOT for everyone, just keep these two things in mind if you wanna try this game out... Because if you think you're content with, or even are looking forward to both aspects, oh BUDDY!!!! this game delivers and then some in ways you'd never expect its charming, goofy, and nostalgic aesthetic to do! It should be in conversation with Undertale, What Remains of Edith Finch, Outer Wilds, Inscryption, and etc. as a 'show of force' for what video game narratives can be!
To get your full mileage out of the game, really try to explore as MUCH of this fictitious web as possible! There's a "main" storyline revolving around the cases, and it's an engaging central story with an underlying message/theme on the clash of internet corporations and their userbases... But the best mysteries and "aha" moments in this game aren't the ones that get you to solve puzzles, it's the ones that have you understand the interconnected web of truths on this World Wide Web. It's an alternate history earth you can only understand through its people, and its people you can only understand through their website pages.... And man... Hypnospace creates that chain ever-so-effectively. If there's a kind of person you can think of in your mind, chances are they may be represented in Hypnospace, and represented in an outright beautiful way. Even the most outlandish, silliest users that seem like outright stereotypes or caricatures will undergo change, or reveal new developments about themselves that will have you rethink everything you thought you knew about what being a particular kind of person truly means. There's a particular side storyline about A dying music genre that had my jaw on the floor as i learned more and more and more about it.
So yeah... I don't know, try out the flippin' game if you can vibe with it's slightly alienating, very high-concept exterior, and if you're also simply REALLY into the whole 90s internet simulator, my god... it doesn't hurt that it looks, sounds, maybe even tastes like that supposed hopeful golden era. It wears its tacky "90s-ness" with pride!
Strong start, hardcore puzzles and outstanding audiovisuals. Then, in the very beginning, you install Professor Helper and the mood starts to drop. It's too annoying but ain't gonna pay for that mofo to uninstall, just switch of the sounds and painstakingly save money until you get pro antivirus - just to realize it's useless. Giving up and paying the criminals 33 coins to remove Helper you think to enjoy the game again.
Then Hypnospace Archival Program kicks in. It's boring, slow, tedious task. You can't believe you are asked to do something so unentertaining in a video game.
The praise:
- really captures the early 00s internet and OS graphical style
- outstanding audio and visual content, especially music (but in the long run it too gets annoying so I switched off autoplay)
- hard core detective work with puzzles, you really feel like hackerman
The nag:
- HAP section is a horrible clickfest and stalls the game story flow
EDIT: Finished the game and I realised it wasn't required to 100% complete HAP, changing to thumb up since overall experience is now better.
the game is done well
it builds a world of it's own which in the lore is what Dylan was trying to do. make a space for people to be in. it's a nice puzzle game that'll keep ya busy for a few hours. the story surprisingly enough didn't feel like it jumped from one thing to another without reason. it felt like the game made sense, as odd as that might be to see. there are some games that will go from point A-C skipping the reason between the two (B).
they did a lovely job with the art and the setting. would say more on the art but all I can really say is that they did a good job with it. not much more to it than that.
and lastly, the game play is nice. this is another one of those things where I could go on and say "it feels fluid and unique". if it wasn't good I'd have started this out with a gripe. it aint nothing all too new as far as computer gaming goes, but still, they did a good job with it.

Hypnospace Outlaw is a weird game. Fans of Uplink, Simulacra, etc. will quickly recognize the fake-OS shtick, but what I mean is that It's the name of a game that you play, but not the game you're playing. In Hypnospace, there is a game that you play. Called Outlaw. That would actually have been a fairly satisfying game to play all on it's own, but that you only really ever experience for a couple of minutes at a time to move the story forward. I feel like that is a missed opportunity.
BUT
As someone who grew up in the wild west days of the World Wide Web, I can confirm that playing Hypnospace Outlaw is 100% what that experience was like. The characters you meet feel like they stepped directly out of the BBS of my memories. And it is worth attempting to play just for that alone.
And then there is, of course, the story that is told. Which is told very well and is a story more people should hear.
And then there is the story that you don't hear. Each character's relationship to each other. How pedestrian harassment in online spaces can be. The way people often feel entitled to someone's time and attention (Tiff's FList... Oof). How a little vision and ambition can be a terrible weapon in the wrong hands.
The point is.. everything here is really well done. I worry that, because the game is so experimental that it will resist mainstream appeal. But as someone who doesn't typically play VNs or other wholly narrative-driven games, I enjoyed myself quite thoroughly.
A loving depiction of the late 90s early aughts internet, full of humanity and life. This is the only game that has ever made me ugly sob. Literally the best writting ive ever seen in a game, i am not exagerating
Even if you aren’t nostalgic for the early days of the internet, Hypospace Outlaw has a way of pulling you in with its depth. Exploration and discovery is really the name of the game here. Just playing the story maybe reveals about 50% of what there is to discover. However, if you dig deeper there is all of these hidden jokes, songs (that are all way better than they need to be), and discoverable items. The characters really feel like people you knew growing up dialed up to 10 for absurdist comedic effect. And it’s interesting to see them all react to your actions over the course of the game. I loved this game and I could not recommend it more.
This is legit the only way you can go back in time. Funny, great story, relatable characters and situations. Extremely nostalgic internet vibes. Must have for all millennials who lived through the internet of the 90's and early 2000's.
just 100%'ed this game and I'm feeling good. This is the first time I've ever 100 percented a game before, so take that as tacit endorsement. it is FUN. This game is one of the most wonderful things I've ever played. The visuals are so nice! You explore a Y2K-era internet community! You play an internet moderator! You can customize your desktop! Neil Cicierega is in it! What could be better than all that? PLAY IT I SWEAR TO GOD!
I am in genuine disbelief I am yet to write a review on this game.
This game is art. This feels in many ways, like a time capsule to early internet culture. Back when the internet was more of a "place" you went to instead of being so tightly integrated into our daily lives.
The basic premise is that you are pretty much internet police, moderating the Hypnospace which gives you plenty enough reason to explore the Hypnospace. The way the game gets you to care about the different characters is a masterclass in narrative gameplay. At this point, I have pavlovian responses to the OST just due to how strong the more emotional moments are.
I can do nothing but wholeheartedly recommend this game, even at full price.
This is awesome. If you have the time to go through the puzzles, so worth it!
Fantastic game. The writing is fun and goofy enough to always be engaging (sometimes it is laugh-out-loud funny), and (with a few small exceptions) really makes you feel like you're in a late 90's forum. Doing "investigations" in the form of forum moderation is a novel idea that loses a liiiittle steam by the end, but the game is the right length that it doesn't have time to wear out its welcome. There's also a ton of stuff to do that isn't related to the main plot, so that also helps it from wearing out its welcome. You can have a little bonzai buddy tomagotchi that shits on your desktop!
I have played MANY point n click games. Some were okay, some were absolute masterpieces and others were a bit meh.
Hypnospace Outlaw is one of the masterpieces. It is just as fun as it looks. Please give it a try.
A puzzle game unlike any other, strongly drawing upon nostalgia for the early internet. If you, like me, remember Angelfire and Geocities, and you enjoy reading and some light detective work, then this is the game for you.
What an awesome game... Crazy to feel nostalgic for something that you have never experienced, but it works!
Also some really good puzzle design on top of everything else, and the story really gripped me at places.
As 2k internet simulator, prepare to read.
