Good old HL1 game. Fun story plot, good action, few new games and just overall fun little DLC.
A masterful Half-Life mod, multiple new weapons do not feel stale and have interesting features, along with new enemy types. very much worth the price, albeit a shorter game
Unlike blue shift, opposing force isn't just another half life 1 with a different character, it has lots of new things like weapons , enemies , it has more action than half life 1 itself and i think it is better than all the half lives before half life 2 and its crazy to think that it was made in 1999.
(spoiler alert)
It's story is better and more realistic than half life 1 and blue shift. A trained marine that has good abilities in battles goes to a place that is being invaded by aliens to control the situation (or silence the facility)
In half life 1 some random scientist had a basic training and what the hell he killed the leader of the aliens without any help.
Great story and really added a lot of new elements
if you liked half life but thought the power scaling was bogus enjoy this game cuz u are never too powerful also every place has like 200 enemies so u always gotta be on ur feet nice game not good for the heart
Honestly, this game is almost better than Half-Life 1. One huge flaw is the NPC's following AI system. It is very annoying because of how broken and buggy it is. I know this is an old game but they still could've fixed this at any point now. Adrian Shephard, we miss you, please come back. Please send letters to G-man to put him out of sleep. Or better yet, inform VAVLE to release HALF-LIFE 3. (It will never happen)
Half-Life: Opposing Force takes players back to Black Mesa in a thrilling and fresh way.
Playing as Adrian Shephard, a soldier sent to contain the incident, offers a unique perspective on the chaos.
The expansion introduces new weapons, enemies, and allies, keeping the experience exciting and unpredictable.
Level design remains top-notch, blending tight combat encounters with clever puzzles and exploration.
Opposing Force’s standout moments include its creative use of the environment and its memorable new gameplay mechanics.
While not as groundbreaking as the original, it’s a well-crafted expansion that honors and enhances the Half-Life legacy.
Fans of the series will find plenty to love in this action-packed return to Black Mesa.
the docort said that the diahrea from the laxative was opposing the force of my asshole (i superglued it shut)
It's great to see the Black Mesa Incident from perspective of the soldiers with new types of enemies
S-tier expansion pack, Its as fun as blue shift and original half life, It feels longer than blue shift too, Unfortunately, as great as our protagonist Is, we probably wont see shephard again In official half life games, one: he Is In stasis, two: It was made by gearbox, but hey, mods exist for half life 2, so go crazy If you love adrian
Great game <3
Better play with HLFixes.
Runs natively on Linux.
Definitely the best Half Life extension, far surpassing Blue Shift, the story that varies so much from the original makes it an almost totally renewed experience, if you are a fan of this type of retro games, play it. Recommended.
This expansion is a definite must play for the Half Life enthusiast as well as the first person shooter/survival horror enthusiast! It is a great alternate perspective from another one of the other major characters of the first Half Life game as USMC HECU grunt Cpl. Adrian Shepherd, aside from Freeman himself and Calhoun in Blue Shift. I remember this game, Blue Shift, Uplink, and Decay from way back when. Total nostalgia. Highly recommend it! Very bada**.
The better of the two HL1 DLCs by far. A more fleshed out story with several new weapons and enemies that change the way you'll progress throughout Black Mesa. I do miss the crowbar 3. A worthy DLC of a great game that I recommend all fans of HL1 play (try not to get too annoyed by the rope physics)
More original Half-Life! But from the perspective of the team trying to kill you in the base game. Honestly enjoyed it, The different weapons being a mix of classic fps and unique. Some of the level design was initially confusing, but if you're not a smoothbrain, you'll manage fine. Some of the enemies you run into with your team that you pick up along the way will absolutely maul your friends. I found it easier to leave them guarding places behind me and fighting alone. Overall i enjoyed this expansion. Pipe wrench man!
Genuinely as good as Half-Life, which is saying something. Don't look at it as just a DLC, but as a whole extra story with new mechanics, similar to Dishonored's DLC expansions.
EDIT: This review initially covered a bug where royalty-free music would play throughout the game. as opposed to Chris Jensen's soundtrack. That has seemingly been fixed.
However, numerous other bugs plague this release, Such as:
- ||jumping towards the Pit Worm, much like Half-Life's Tentacle, causes the player to get stuck.||
- A "new" bug not in Half-Life, where players easily stick to elevators.
Minor gripe, on OLD machines playing OP4, activating night-vision goggles causes worse frame drops than waving the flashlight in Half-Life.
I wish Steam had a neutral button for games like this. I love the concept of playing as the military through the events of HL1, but this game is the clunkiest between the three originals (HL1, Blue Shift, and Opposing Force).
I ran into the same bug about 6 times throughout my playthrough where I would be going up or down an elevator and my model would get stuck in the elevator which meant I couldn't move and was subjected to this metallic grinding noise until I reloaded a save.
Some of the enemies introduced in this game are quite annoying in my opinion. They're not necessarily bad designs, but one of them spawns a small bug-like enemy when it dies, which is fine but it means if you're too close when you kill the main enemy you may not have time to kill the bug before it leaps to you. This isn't that bad on its own but there are segments with multiple of this same enemy in tight spaces and that can be frustrating (especially when the bug models are hidden in the corpse model of the main aliens).
The AI companions in all of the half-life games are kind of idiots, but this game was the most frustrating here as well. I was killed by my own soldiers at least 5 different times while playing this game (admittedly 4 of those were in the same segment) because they don't seem to mind shooting right through you. It's also difficult to get the AI to properly follow you if you'd like them to escort you to the next room or area.
I was also a bit let down by the final boss. HL1's final boss is also infamous, but at least it's creative. This game's final boss was a bit of a slug-fest and I was pretty bored with the premise before I was even halfway done with it.
If you enjoyed HL1 a lot, or are interested in getting more from the HL universe, I would recommend it, but be warned that this game can be more frustrating than HL1 and Blue Shift not because of difficulty, but because of bugs.
Really good so far lol. Even tho 19 mins playtime. Will update as I go on ofc. W Half life game. Cool to see different perspectives in the same universe/world. Played HL1 and now on this :DD 1/2/24
Very good follow up to HL1 improves on certain elements of the first, while The first is still overall imo a better experience this game is more fun to play and I would not skip out on this great dlc.
The game is very entertaining, while not as hard as hl1 or hl blue shift but it is very good
fun little side expansion for the original game but unfortunately it was not given the same benefits as the original with its anniversary update
imagine half life but it cuts to the chase wayyyy faster, and you get all the super cool end-game weapons wayyy earlier. kept forgetting i wasnt gromgrom freemale. in summary: it's a half life game, what more do you need?
It's kinda weird that an expansion for Half-Life 1 intoduced more new weapons than Half-Life 2 and episodes combined (no pun intended)
Pretty interesting game with a bit of difficulty, I wish the game-play was a bit more extensive
Good expansion to Half-Life universe, new weapons, places to explore and enemies. Only downside it felt a little short.
Great game, with an assortment of weapons added to half life on top of the already existing weapons, only problems i have with the game are the ambushes when there aren't any health packs, and the insanely tanky enemies.
Peak Fiction!
The new exclusive weapons are good, but some are barely even used. (The "Shock Roach" )
Probably the best DLC for a game that you can ever purchase. Some moments in this expansion were even better than the orginal Half-Life. The weapon design is also incredible as well.
Holds up pretty well, has the prototypes of puzzles that get fleshed out more later in the series.
Love it, I prefer it over the original...Freeman is great and all that, but I have much more in common with a raggedy-ass marine like Shepherd.
This "expansion" adds some new mechanics (like the rope mechanic) and a bunch of new weapons to kill Xenians, Black ops and race X with...In my mind it is the definitive version of HL , especially for deathmatch
Finished it in around 5 hours, good expansion for Half Life 1, extends the story/weapons/monsters of HL1, it is fun and worth finishing. A good game.
Great expansion to the original game. Love the new weapons and enemies introduced, and i honestly prefer the night vision to the dinky little flashlight any day.
Final boss is a little underwhelming though. Really the only new mechanic/tool it utilizes is the barnacle grappling hook, but only to get over one chasm.
I'm FIENDING for more of that Adrian Shephard goodness. I WART MORE. I am lonely without him, I just need to *looks away, slight blush* r-rub my face all over his chest, grabbing his military-grade boobs and squishing them till they are sore. I. AM. OBSESSED. WITH THIS. GAME.
Look what they did to my boy Adrian. Never to be seen again. Still, it's a very good game.
Pretty good game after all I guess... BUY IT BEFORE THE SALE RUNS OUT!!!!
Also you need half life 1 to play it so BUY IT ALL!!!!1!1!1!!
Well, that was a half life game alright but except its more of a military game then a normal half life game but even tho its still the same gameplay, it has a really fun mechanics and a different story so yeah i'm pretty much gonna give it a 7/10 well its not my favorite half life game its still a good game

🟢 Bugs : The game is stable, with no notable bugs to disrupt the experience
🟢 Level Design : Features some creative new areas and weapons, but lacks the same memorable impact as Half-Life
🟡 Lifetime : The campaign is short, lasting around 5 to 7 hours, which feels reasonable for an expansion

If you like Half-Life 1, you're going to love this. Even though it was developed by a different team, the atmosphere and immersion, as well as the world-building, still the same. The new weapons and enemies are both great and challenging. The game is a bit shorter than Half-Life 1, about 3/4 of its size, but it was still enjoyable. It was also interesting to see the military's perspective on the accident.
Thing I didn't like was The rope physics it was clunky, and glitches all over the place. Other than that, there are zero major glitches, and it's completely playable without any crashes.
The protagonist, Shephard, is an absolute chad. Valve, please put him in the next game (let him out!).
Overall, I’d give it an 8/10.
I honestly would recommend if you like the original Half-Life, but it's not as good as the original
It's slightly buggy, which wasn't an issue with the original, and the enemies are too bullet spongy for my taste. The weapons are also really unbalanced, many guns end up being useless in the late game, which I didn't really enjoy.
Awesome DLC for an awesome game. It's almost the length of the main game
Much better then Half-life Blue flavor. (blue shift)
Honestly always loved any game that allows you to play on the Opposing Force. (Terrible joke i know)
But you should honestly play this game! It's much different from the main game and blue shift, and honestly was very fun to play. (My first real review, i was lazy on the others.) But anyhow you really should give this game a try, if you don't like it you can always refund.
You get to play as a soldier and shoot funny scientist man who screams when you shoot him. 10/10.

World Perspective: Viewing this gem with the glint of a frosty warrior's eye, let’s dive into this exhilarating game expansion that still packs a punch, decades after its release.

Introduction
Gearbox Software delivered a howl-worthy expansion to Valve’s iconic Half-Life series back in 1999 with Half-Life: Opposing Force. It takes you out of Gordon Freeman’s shoes and into the boots of Corporal Adrian Shephard, offering a refreshing "enemy perspective" during the Black Mesa incident. For a game that's over 20 years old, it holds up remarkably well and continues to be celebrated as a crucial part of the Half-Life legacy.

Basic Plot Summary
Opposing Force shifts the spotlight to Adrian Shephard, a soldier of the HECU (Hazardous Environment Combat Unit). After surviving a helicopter crash during his mission to suppress the chaos at Black Mesa, Shephard is swept into a web of alien invasions, conspiracies, and an evolving narrative that intertwines with Freeman’s story. The game’s genius lies in its ability to weave a parallel tale without overshadowing or contradicting the original.

Originality
Opposing Force stands out as an expansion that doesn’t merely add "more of the same" but instead enriches the Half-Life universe with new weapons, enemies, and mechanics. Gearbox managed to strike a balance between innovation and maintaining the core identity of the original game. Features like the barnacle grappling hook and a squad command system were ahead of their time and remain memorable highlights.

The Studio Behind the Magic
Gearbox Software, now renowned for the Borderlands franchise, made its debut with Opposing Force. Collaborating closely with Valve, they showcased their knack for expanding existing universes while introducing their own flair. Compared to later expansions like Blue Shift, Opposing Force remains the gold standard, demonstrating Gearbox’s early commitment to quality.

Analysis and Evaluation
Core Gameplay Mechanics:
Opposing Force retains the tight FPS mechanics of Half-Life while adding new dimensions. Climbing ropes, using night vision, and controlling NPC squad members are intuitive enhancements that deepen the gameplay experience.
Weapons and Tools:
The arsenal is diverse and satisfying. From the wrench’s visceral melee attacks to the Displacer Cannon’s Xen-teleporting mayhem, each addition feels purposeful. The barnacle grappling hook is particularly innovative, offering both traversal and combat utility.
New Enemies:
Race X, the new alien faction, injects variety with their unique designs and abilities. Their presence expands the narrative scope while presenting fresh challenges.

Character Development
Main Character - Adrian Shephard:
Shephard is a silent protagonist, much like Freeman, but his role as a soldier adds a distinct flavor to the storytelling. His stoic resilience resonates with players who appreciate a more grounded hero.
Supporting Characters:
The addition of medic and engineer NPCs enriches the squad dynamic, blending utility with immersive storytelling.
Relatability and Arcs:
While Shephard doesn’t speak, his journey from a cog in the military machine to an independent survivor adds an understated yet impactful arc.

Structure
Opposing Force’s pacing is commendable. It packs a full narrative arc into a concise runtime without feeling rushed. The interconnected levels and environmental storytelling keep players engaged while maintaining a natural flow.

Graphics and Visuals
For a 1999 release, Opposing Force is a visual delight. While dated by today’s standards, the atmospheric lighting, level design, and detailed textures remain effective. The stark industrial corridors of Black Mesa contrast beautifully with the otherworldly chaos of Xen environments.

Sound and Music
The sound design is a triumph. From the hum of alien machinery to the chatter of NPC squadmates, every audio cue enhances immersion. The soundtrack, while sparse, underscores key moments effectively.

Performance and Technical Aspects
Stability:
Opposing Force runs like a dream, even on modern systems. Any issues are usually tied to the aging GoldSrc engine, easily addressed with community mods.
Compatibility:
The game scales well, but widescreen support requires tweaking for optimal visuals.

Impact and Legacy
Opposing Force set a benchmark for what an expansion could achieve. Its innovations have influenced FPS design and ensured its place as a beloved chapter in the Half-Life saga.

Praise and Critique
Strengths:
- Innovative mechanics like the barnacle grappling hook.
- Memorable new enemies and weapons.
- Expands the Half-Life lore without feeling redundant.
- Strong level design and pacing.
Weaknesses:
- Short runtime (~6 hours).
- Clunky squad mechanics.
[*]Underwhelming final boss encounter.

Comparison
Opposing Force is often compared to Blue Shift, its successor expansion. While both have their merits, Opposing Force’s bold innovations make it the superior experience. Fans of modern FPS games like DOOM Eternal may find its mechanics simplistic, but its charm lies in its foundational role in the genre.

Conclusion
Opposing Force is a masterclass in expansion design. It pays homage to the original Half-Life while confidently carving its own identity. As an Ice Wolf who has prowled through countless FPS games, I can wholeheartedly recommend this gem to anyone seeking a nostalgic yet thrilling experience.
Final Rating: 9/10 - A must-play for fans of classic FPS games.
Opposing farts. This game is good but and i most likely suffer from serious skill issues but the game throws way to many enemies to the player and far to little amount of health.
Honestly i want to see a spin off, where Adrian Sheppard Teams up with Freeman and Barney and a Black Ops Survivor who are helped with Black Mesa Survivor's go against G-man and an unfriendly alien/human hoard. Maybe its nostalgia speaking but i loved this Half-Life OG mod.
This game is by far one of the best singleplayer shooter games ive played.
Ah yes, OpFor, a prime example of expansion done right. You take the role of Corporal Adrian Shephard, a marine sent to Black Mesa to get rid of Freeman. It's a great take on the idea of Half-Life from the perspective of someone else, and is well worth the money if you loved HL1.
honestly the game wasn't too enjoyable and the enemy where that fucking weapon drops after dying and starts trying to kill you is EXTREMELY annoying, im glad that i could beat it but i absolutely will never replay this. felt really boring. i guess my brain is just rotten because i played it 25 years after release
Absolute 4/10, the worst official half-life game. Combat encounters very quickly become gauntlets with increasingly large amounts of increasingly difficult enemies in largely uninteresting, unvaried placements and arenas. Puzzle-solving and exploration is often overly cryptic and confusing, both major bosses are genuinely awful. This feels like a shortened re-hash of half-life 1 with enemy encounters that often feel borderline impossible in the worst way. Play blue shift instead, gear box managed the half-life experience much better there.
