Unique mechanics and also quite challenging.
For this low price would totally recommend!
This game may have some rough spots but overall it's a cool little indie game with some solid mechanics and some decent challenges. I recommend it!
Imagine if portal was made by first time student game devs. Has plenty of rough edges, but you know, still playable.
When I heard one developer's post discussing the game's features, I finally gave it a go at a nice price. After playing a couple of hours until the end, I have to say this is pretty awesome game with a great concept of gravity/time manipulation! If you like solving puzzles or mazes similar to Portal, this is the game for you.
Pros:
> Great animation and effects with controls similar to most Valve games.
> Challenging puzzles with satisfactory upgrades.
> Added story line to make your purpose at the test site more interesting.
Cons:
> Epilepsy warning! Your tool and certain obstacles will produce bright (and sometimes sudden) colors.
> Free falling speed varies between normal running and sprinting, which could make maneuverability a bit tricky.
> Setting very high graphics may result in variable (but minor) game lag.
Considerations:
> Control adjustments should be in-game, not before the game starts.
> Exploration is key even if certain areas may need more guidance.
> In-game voice acting and audio are not the greatest, but doable for gameplay.
Looking back at my time playing this, I'd say it's probably equal parts fun and frustrating. There are three big problems, in my opinion: timing, visibility, and optimization.
Timing -- While this game is described as a puzzle platformer, it is much more platformer than puzzle. This game requires precision timing in many places, seemingly down to the millisecond. Be prepared to die a lot, repeatedly, over 500 times in some sections, and be prepared to rage-quit several times.
Visibility -- The visual design is nice, but it often obscures what you need to see. For example, there is one section where you need to move down a hallway, dropping down into holes in the floor to avoid getting killed by a platform that moves up and down the hallway. However, this platform constantly throws out tons of sparks, and those sparks make it nearly impossible to see the holes in the floor.
Optimization -- While the game ran at 59-60 FPS most of the time, there were several times, usually in places involving batteries, that it got very choppy and the FPS dropped down to 15 or below. The FPS fluctuated wildly during these brief periods, going from 60 to 20, then 2, then 15, then 5, then 54, then 25, then 13, etc. I haven't experienced this with any other game, but it's been a routine occurrence with this game. For reference, I'm running on an Intel i7-3770K @ 3.50 GHz, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti, 32GB memory, and Windows 7 Pro.
My initial reaction was a thumbs down because of the issues mentioned above. After finishing the game, I'll change it to a thumbs up because, overall, I think this is a fun game and it's definitely worthy of your time and attention. However, if you don't have perfect timing, you may quit in frustration and never go back to it.
the game is fun don't get me wrong. I feel its a little to much like portal and the story seems a little lack luster. I'm not really sure whats going on and come the end of the game I feel like I missed something. Why were some objectives red while others were green or white. Did I make poor choices I'm not sure I mean you get told very clearly not to open the case and what is the first thing we do... The game play is fun and graphics are nice, music is good I just think it needs a little more story development. I finished the game more confused then when I started
If I had to sum up this game in as few words as possible I'd probably say 'Portal, but with gravity instead of portals.' I mean that in the best possible way, as I've enjoyed this game far more than I expected to.
The main jist of what you'll be doing in this game is either pushing things from a point, or pulling them to a point. Sounds simple enough, but once you add in platforming sections, timing based puzzles, and turrets, it gets more... complicated. Thankfully, all of the puzzles have been well built and thought out to ensure that only get up to "challenging, yet solvable," which (opinion ahead) I feel is what a puzzle game should be like. I was very surprised by how much detail is in the background in this game, which is presented by some decent voice acting. The voice overs may not be top-tier quality, but the overall quality is still pretty good, and very impressive for a less than $10 game.
On the negatives, the visuals are on the lower/middle range of what's out there, and the menus look basic. There is some delay between jumps, which takes some getting used to, but isn't the worst out there. It's also not that long of a game. However, games don't need to be 100+ hours to be good (the aforementioned Portal was only about 2 hours), and visuals can always be improved. There are plenty of games with good visuals, but crap for gameplay.
Ultimately, Gravity Well makes for a fun time, and has the signs of a developer that actually cares about making a good game.
I thought this was a nice puzzle game but I had to refund it. The problem for me was I have to play with a gamepad in my left hand (just wasd and triggers) and a mouse. I cannot play via a keyboard. This has worked fine for me in many hundreds of games. I started Gravity Well with no problem. When I got to the second level though things started going wrong. When I presed the trigger to jump, every second press would result in firing a gravity well. I messed about with Xpadder, Pinnacle, Antimicro and no software, the best I got it was that jump no longer fired but sprint did! I built my first PC in 1995, there never used to be these problems but I gather this is something to do with the Unity engine. Anyway, I would still recommend itas what I played was very good. They really need to sort out the keybing though to make the game more accessable, flexibility used to be the name of the game in PC gaming.
Really cool and fun puzzle game and there is a few little secrets if you listen and look for the clues!
Now for the real review, this game is pretty linear to a short story portal type game. It's gone reasonably well, the settings for graphics have lag and studders through out. Please do NOT play this game if you're Epilepsy, you will have seizure. The lights generated are dizzy and unforgiving in almost all the puzzles. Now besides that the game is well done and thoughout. For the puzzle lovers, try this one, it's fast paced with different tools than other first person puzzle games.
I like this game a lot. Being able to manipulate objects via the Gravity gun is a lot of fun and I especially like the reverse polarity feature. Once you get used to the controls it feels intuitive. There are challenges but things are pretty much straight forward with some nice puzzles. I am using an XBOX controller which gives me better control. I recommend this game!
