Despite the horrifying death traps across the mysterious island, J.J. is able to revive from death endlessly. Many traps and gimmicks can be overcome only by bringing harm to your body, such as being struck by an iron ball, or by dismemberment. Be wary of your surroundings and look for ways, conventional and unconventional, to get through the island.
You may need to use your limbs as weight, or even break yourself in two to get through smaller spaces. Sometimes you can find tips by sacrificing your own body through dismemberment, being crushed, jumping into fires, and more. But don’t worry as you can revive yourself as many times as needed to find your way through the island.
J.J. scours Memoria Island to find her best friend, who has gone missing during a camping trip. However, this island was like a nightmare: no matter how many times she sustains fatal injury, she couldn’t die, and instead is able to revive herself back to normal. J.J. ventures into the depth of the island as she drags her decapitated body along, enduring the pain.
Her limbs may sever, her neck may break, she may go through severe burns, but... In order to save her best friend, she puts her own body and life on the line, reviving infinitely, as she presses forward. Why did she go missing? What is going on in this world? All of these mysteries shall be revealed when the game is cleared.

A well-told, touching story with a lovely pinch of SWERY eccentricity
Good graphics and effects
This story and gameplay are going to be hit and miss for some. There were times where the puzzle design was EXCELLENT, and then there are times where it is ABYSMAL. I wouldn't say it's difficult, but I would say it's a bit tedious, especially if you're trying to unlock everything.
However, despite all that I do recommend this game. The story is very heavy and very well executed overall. As a queer individual myself, the story hit so hard, even though I knew the "twist" going in. I am usually quite sensitive to LGBTQ+ rep in games, I have to take many breaks often because of trauma, and it's way worse when the representation sucks. However, that is mostly not the case here, I do have some issues with this, but... it was so close to home, it brought me to tears. The story is going to stick with me forever, in a phenomenal way I was not expecting at all.

on a more serious note its a relatively short but easy play even if ur horrible at platformers like me there typically checkpoints close enough and I only ever needed a guide for collectibles and 2 puzzles

Sadly, I couldn't get into this after being excited to play it for a while. It started promisingly, but two significant issues drove me away. First off, the gameplay got annoying an hour or two in. While the concept is interesting, it feels too slow and tedious. I get that it was going for that intentionally to help immerse the player into J.J.'s emotions, but to pull off "bad" gameplay effectively, there is a threshold it can not pass, and it must continuously keep you engaged in its characters and themes to justify said gameplay. This leads to the 2nd issue, where the writing is a mixed bag. A lot of the dialogue is done through text messages. Many said text messages read as "trying to be relatable with the kids" cringe, making the characters seem less realistic and undermining the overall scenario. It is a shame cause the overall concept of this game is very good, but the execution was just not it.

Lovely story and art direction. The gameplay is alright.
It packs a powerful narrative, a strong accompanying musical score, and interesting puzzles and puzzle mechanics, but the game is held back a little by a few gameplay hiccups. The mini cutscene that plays every time you recover broken bones will get old pretty quickly, especially if you're doing your best to collect all the donut things, and the final sequence of the game is exciting in theory, but is held back in practice by the fact that the game's platforming mechanics are a bit imprecise and don't lend themselves well to setpieces where you only have one chance to pull off a maneuver correctly. Just about everywhere else in the game, that imprecise platforming is perfectly tolerable because the recovery system keeps the price of screw ups very low.
Other than that, there are a couple sound effects in the game that get a little bit grating, but most of them only appear briefly in one or two stages.
But while those faults are noticeable, they don't change the fact that the game showcases an emotional journey of self-discovery and the weight of our relationships with other people, with an incredibly executed and deeply unsettling atmosphere and some very creepy storytelling. I probably wouldn't pay full retail for the game, but if you can get it on sale it's more than worth the price of admission.
다른 게임들과 비교해 차별화된 점은 두말할 것 없이 자해와 그를 이용한 퍼즐일 것이다. 작중 J.J.는 팔이 떨어져도, 몸통이 잘려 상·하체가 분리되어도, 사지가 모두 뜯겨져 머리 하나 밖에 남지 않더라도 단숨에 회복가능하다. 그리고 게임 내 나오는 여러 퍼즐을 풀기 위해서 이러한 특징을 이용할 필요가 있다. 무언가를 던져 맞춰야하는데 주변에 던질만한 것이 없다면, 팔을 뜯아내 던져야한다. 가야하는 통로가 너무 좁으면 머리 하나만 달랑 남기고 모두 버려 대굴대굴 굴러가 통과해야할 수도 있다. 만약 입구를 불에 타는 것들로 막혀있다면... . 뭐 이런 식으로 여러가지 퍼즐들을 J.J. 를 자해함으로써 생기는 기믹들을 사용해 풀어나가야하는 것이 이 게임의 특징이다.
장점
1. 신체손상을 이용한 참신한 퍼즐
> 앞서 말했듯이 이 게임 퍼즐의 특징은 신체를 손상시킴으로 풀 수 있다는 것이다. 일밙적으로 다른 게임들에선 시도조차 안하는 요소이기 때문에 이 게임에서 만 볼 수 있는 독특한 기믹들이 상당히 많다.
> 레킹 볼에 맞아 목이 180도로 꺽이면 세상이 반전되어 보이는 것 처럼, 아예 중력을 역전시켜버린다던지. 톱날에 갈려나가는 충격으로 일반적으로 못 가는 장소를 간다던지 등등. 고어하긴 하지만 어느정도 정형화된 퍼즐 플래폼 게임들에서 보기 힘든 접긴이기도 하다.
2. 준수한 비주얼
> 이 게임의 그래픽이 굉장히 디테일하다던가, 현실적이라던가 그렇지는 않다. 그럼에도 준수한 배경미술과 조명, 그리고 3D 이미지와 결합된 독특한 분위기가 버려진 섬이라는 게임 내 배경을 충실하게 구현한다. 캐릭터 애니메이션도 좋은 편이라 J.J. 의 사지가 날라가고 불에 타는 등 아파할 만한 상황에서 보는 사람으로 하여금 진짜 개아파보이게 한다.
> 그래픽과 별개로 삽입되는 음악도 상당히 좋다. 하지만 시기적절... 하게 사용했다곤 못하겠다.
3. 스토리
> 언급하는 순간 꽤 심한 스포일러라서 많이 언급하긴 힘들지만, 이 겜의 스토리는 꽤 좋다. 무엇모다 그저 개발자의 추향이거나 어그로성 요소로 넣었을 것이라고 생각했던 고어 요소마저 스토리의 일부를 간접적으로 표현했다는건 상당히 독특했음.
단점
1. 더빙
> 외국어 더빙은 대개 엔간히 질이 낮아도 어느정도 수준만 갖추면 그런대로 들을만하다. 그런데 이 게임의 더빙은 외국어인 것임을 감안해도 그... 뭐랄까 국어책 읽는 느낌이 든다.
> 이게 성우의 실력 부족에서 기인하는지, 아님 개발자의 디렉팅 방향성 때문인지는 잘 모르겠다. 이 게임의 스토리와 분위기를 생각해보면 이런 더빙을 의도한건가 싶기도 한다. 하지만 의도가 어쨌든 퀄리티 자체는 상당히 떨어져 몰입감을 많이 해치는건 사실이다.
2. 엔딩
> 이는 단점보다 호불호 요소에 가깝다. 스포일러 때문에 구체적으로 언급하긴 어렵지만 개인적으로 이 게임의 엔딩은 많이 허무했다고 생각한다. 앞서 오랜 시간을 들여 착실히 빌드업을 쌓아 위기감을 형성시킨 것에 비해 마무리가 너무 갑작스럽고 단순(?)했다. 일반적인 스토리가 '-승-전-결' 이라면 이 게임은 '기-승-ㅈ-결' 이런 느낌. 위기가 닥치자마자 이야기가 마무리된다.
> 갑작스러운건 둘 때 치더라도 J.J. 의 갈등 해소의 이유 조차 많이 아쉬웠다. 주인공인 J.J.는 실제 생물학적 성별이 남성이지만 동시에 자신의 성별이 여성이라고 생각하는 성정체성을 가지고, 상당히 보수적이고 강압적인 모습을 보이는 어머니 아래서 십 몇 년을 살아왔으며, 이러한 배경 속에서 이러한 숨기고 싶어하는 요소들이 학교에 반강제로 커밍아웃되고 이를 빌미로 협박 비스무리한 것들까지 받고 있는 것으로 추정되는 상황이라 결국 자살 기도를 했다. 이러한 주인공이 게임 플레이 내내 고통받고 절망하다가 후반부에 J.J.의 인형인 F.K.의 응원 하나로 모든 내적갈등이 해소된다는 스토리는 너무 갑작스럽다. 물론 젠더 문제에 대한 접근은 꽤나 부담스럽기도 하고 "너 자신을 긍정해라"라는 메시지가 상당히 정석적이기에 엔딩의 방향성 자체는 딱히 이상하다던가, 틀렸다던가 싶지는 않다. 그런데 그럼에도 조금 더 엔딩에 대해 빌드업을 했으면 어땠을까.
it's been about five years since i first played this game- i got it on sale on steam recently to play it again, and i find myself still in the same tears and awe this game left me in all that time ago, as well as feeling familiar swirling emotions as the credits rolled.
this was a game needed in the world when it first came out, this was a game i wish we could've been able to see shine even sooner than that, and this *is* a game that still remains strong with a timeless narrative many will always need to hear and see, even if they don't know they need it yet.
if you're down for a unique puzzle-platformer in every sense- gameplay, narrative, visuals, music, characters, so on- and are open to navigating a island with trippy and unsettling aesthetics all around through a brutal yet... helpful death/regeneration mechanic censored with a stark black and white silhouette- and listening to a story that resonates with so many people and their own realities- this is a game worth sitting down and devoting a few days to a week to complete.
my only heads up is that your controls for this game can be awkward/clumsy at times, due to the nature of how the gameplay works in it- getting through the game is 100% doable, but you may run into a few challenges depending on the chapter and method of death in which you need to solve a puzzle or move onto the next checkpoint. if you realize this isn't for you gameplay wise, i highly recommend finding another way to experience the story for yourself anyway.
It's not that good
2 and a half moments in this game made me want to rip all my hair out in frustration.
The controls dont always feel the most smooth, this game isnt a polished gem, but those issues aside.
I really enjoyed this game.
The puzzle solving is unique to say the least, the game can get super creepy, which I loved and the story hit me hard, I ugly cried at the end.
If I could add one thing it would be to add a double jump to the cheat menu.
If you had told me a week ago that one of the most heartfelt and powerful queer narratives in all of gaming was a game made by Swery, I would have laughed at you. The idea sounds ridiculous—Swery? The Deadly Premonition guy?
But it's true. I teared up when I finished The MISSING: J.J. Macfield and the Island of Memories. The integration of the gameplay with the story elements is masterful, elevating both and putting you into that emotionally raw place of alienation, dysphoria, and self-hatred right there with the main character.
On top of that, it's also a legitimately very fun puzzle-platformer that manages to strike an excellent balance of difficulty and that uses its dismemberment mechanics to their fullest potential, without overstaying its welcome. Besides maybe one or two sections I got stuck on for an extended period of time because it wasn't clear what the game wanted from me, the game manages to stay consistently challenging while never putting up a brick wall of a difficulty spike.
There are parts of the game that are rough around the edges—the voice acting is stilted, some of the animations (particularly those around the neck-breaking puzzles) get repetitive with how slightly too long they are, and a few controls could have been explained better. But honestly, to me, those imperfections just make the game feel that much more human and sincere.
It's more about the story than gameplay here. The gameplay is fairly mediocre, and I wish that recovery was faster. You're going to be recovering hundreds of times through a playthrough and having to hold for 2 seconds to trigger the recovery, wait 5 seconds for the recovery animation to finish, and spend another 2 seconds to pick yourself up if you landed on the floor - there's just a lot of obnoxious micro-pauses in service of the game's theme.
I think everything else was okay. if there was a mod in place to make recovery instant, it would be a much smoother experience.
A one-of-a-kind experience. Not because it's a masterpiece, but because it's hard to forget solving a puzzle by ripping your limbs off on the left side of a seesaw, so your head can roll to the right to progress.
