I am both surprised and delighted to hear of a VR cat game where sometimes the cats are kaiju-sized and will destroy a city if you insufficiently entertain them.

Note:
It’s possible to play Kitten’d without a VR headset.
This is however NOT the way the game was meant to be played as you lose out on a big part of the experience and things might not work as well.

This game is amazing and deserves to be played by everyone and everything, living or non-living alike...
On a serious (as can be) note though, this game is adorable. It is just so adorable that it makes me want to cry. Everything related to kittens is captured perfectly, from their squeaky mews to their deep purrs to their adorable (and deadly!) snarls to even the fact that those kittens are absolute demons that you have to take care of, in order to make sure they don't annihilate your house (or an entire city).
There are a few things that I think could be improved, and most of them are UI related. The most notable one being that the game doesn't have an actual pause option. When you pull up the menu the time still goes on, which can make the small feline chaos seem extremely intimidating at times.
Another thing is that while it is true that the game is intended to be played with VR and that it won't be the same without it, it is still playable and quite fun. It seems that the only things that you'll be missing out on are the petting animations, which are admittedly a big part of the game. I haven't tried the VR, and will probably update this review if I ever get to try it out as intended.
Please, play this game. It is a beautiful and precious piece of gem that deserves to be played. Also, take care and stay hydrated as always!
I love cats, and this beautiful game, but it's much harder for me to clean the VR game apartment, then my real home. There's kitten poop ever were. just from one Kitten, you have to be kitten me " LOL". I don't know if I wont to adopt more adorable kittens.
These kittens go to the bathroom to fast, maybe the developer can place a timer scale, in setting, on how fast the kittens could go to the bathroom after they eat, or sleep.
There's no instruction on how to use cleaning products, with the VR controllers.
This is a messy stinky, situation Heeeeeelp. I'm a little OCD ːsteamsadː because cleaning
" behinds " kittens is worth their company, great game the kittens are " perfect ".
this is a good game when you are in a bad day my room mode is to help with bad days story mode is for other stuff
The game is fun for about an hour and then just gets tedious taking care of the cats.
Cant move around in the vr space either, confined to just standing and placing items via teleporting them to a spot you have chosen.
Cat physics are kind of meh and they sometimes glitch out and just move weirdly.
Could of been a good fun game but its boring
A highly enjoyable game. You can tell a lot of love went into this game and the developer took feedback and used it when adding new features etc.
Its been pretty quiet over recent months, so it would be nice to have an update from the developer once in a while on what they are now working on.
The store page really summarises the aim of the game, so I honestly don't feel the need to go into much detail on this review as the info is already available to you. Honestly, the game is worth getting, its decent fun, and, after cleaning your own cats turds up throughout the day, you can relax in VR and clean up some more.
My only wish is that we could name our kittens what we want, and not have it use our steam friends names.
Super cute!! It's fun and adorable to be able to take care of little kittens and just cuddle them and dress them up! just a fun time and its relaxing. Graphics are really good as wells.
Good phasing that progresses and becomes more difficult and hectic by time. Truly cute and you learn some of the diffrent catbreeds that i didnt know existed :) Could be a nice game for a kidsfamily before getting a real cat :) Fun and creative maps like in space and forexample.
Maybe they make piggies or puppies in the future if the game gets some recognition for 12bux you get a fun VR game for the money.
If at somepoint they make a mobile version and you have VR there it might get some attention and kids nagging there parents about getting a cat xD
Bad things are i guess that it isnt as much fun without VR but its decent, but definitely made for VR..
The game places you in a bright white room with a box full of kittens hell bent on destroying everything they can lay their paws on. The room is pretty basic, almost like it's been built by a person who has only ever read about what a house should look like, without ever actually seeing one.
This won’t matter once you start playing because suddenly you are in space, the kittens are on fire and you have to try to feed the kittens, play with them and scoop their poop as well as putting out fires and avoiding the lasers that are going off left, right and center. It makes no sense and it's really quite entertaining.
And devs, please can there be an option for rainbow coloured kitten poop?
I never thought I would find myself sitting with virtual kittens and
petting them for hours, forgetting my real kids.
Don't judge me.
So cute, so irresistible, so much...terror. I can only play this game in short increments because it eventually makes me puke rainbows. But those increments are incredibly entertaining.
TL;DR Version: I wrote nearly 1500 words about a VR kitten game and gave it a thumbs up. What else do you really need to know?
Review based on Patch 1.1.1
As a male in his mid-thirties, with an underutilized VR headset and no children, I saw this product in my queue and thought “Is this what you really think of me Steam? Do you actually think that I’m the type of person who will forego my adult responsibilities and neglect my real-world cat just to flail blindly about my living room, playing with a bunch digitally rendered kittens?”
“You’re goddamn right that’s who I am,” I said, as I added this game to my cart. And for the price, (I think it was 20% off) I have not been disappointed.
Let me start off by saying that I was not even aware that this was an action puzzle game when I bought it. I did not read that far. I saw the opportunity to put cute hats on rainbow colored balls of fluff and I pulled the trigger. But there are actually two distinctly different modes of play. So please, take the journey with me as I tell you about them and expound upon my (current) list of pros and cons. (Or skip it if you don’t enjoy detailed, comprehensive reviews)
First, there is the “story mode”. What a ride this is. You, the humble protagonist, find yourself in what may be the most adorable yet unintentional “Saw” parody ever conceived. Time and time again you manage to find yourself locked in a room with a box of kittens. Your only connection to the outside world is your tormentor who resides on the other side of a cell phone. “The goal is simple”, you’re told. “Keep an eye on the kittens for a specified amount of time. Keep them happy. Prevent them from destroying stuff. Do well. Earn coins. Buy better cat stuff. Fall into the warm embrace of cute consumerism. This is your life now”. You’ve been Kitten’d. (Yes, that’s the source of the game’s namesake.)
It’s pretty simple stuff. Up until the point that it’s not. The complexity grows exponentially with each level. Did you ever think you’d find yourself throwing a bag of cat litter at a flying saucer to prevent it from abducting your Siamese kitten? A kitten who is, by the way, currently destroying ALL your stuff. Because he’s mad at you. Because you’re too busy saving him from alien abduction to pet him. Neither did I. But that’s what happened. 2/7 of the way through the game.
The puzzles quickly ramp up from “well that was easy” to “I looked away for FIVE SECONDS, WHY IS EVERYTHING POOPED ON AND ON FIRE!” Equal parts fun and frustrating. I’ve yet to get very far in this mode, but it would seem to have built in replayability. Any hope of getting more then three out of seven stars on some of the earlier levels seems contingent upon having the upgraded items that you can only get by failing your way through the entire game at least once. Failure can sometimes be more entertaining than victory. I like this. You may not.
You ALWAYS need to be doing something. If you’re not moving, you’re losing. This can feel like a fun challenge when things are working well. It can be incredibly frustrating when they’re not. And unfortunately, there are some bugs/features that can kill an entire run before it’s even started.
As you make progress you will get more and more “stuff” that you will need to keep track of in order to do well. This “stuff”, for all intents and purposes, appears to be made of flubber. A kitten jumps off the couch and a cannister of cat food soars seven feet through the air, smashing several items and costing you hundreds of points along the way. Are your kittens pooping on the sofa because the litterbox is empty? Too bad. The pooper scooper is in a place you can’t reach and the cat litter clipped out of the stage thirty seconds ago. It’s at this point that I should mention that you do not have free roam of the room you’re in. You are locked into the center and have to “Jedi force pull” any items that you need to you. This does not help if key items have bounced into areas you can’t see or if they fell out of the stage entirely. It doesn’t happen often. But you always have to restart when it does.
At times you may also need to “force push” items onto higher shelves to keep curious kittens from breaking them. Most of these times you would just be better off smashing the items yourself and saving the kittens the trouble. The game doesn’t explain to you (that I’ve seen) that you can even do this, and it’s too choppy to use effectively once you figure out how it’s done.
It’s a significant gripe considering that there are times when the only option you have to keep something from getting broken is to move it to a higher area. I’ve easily lost hundreds of points trying to “kitten proof” an area before opening the box. It takes the wind out of the sails of pre-emptive planning.
Still, it’s not game breaking, and could very easily be fixed in the future. The Devs seem engaged; interested in making constant improvements and patching bugs. I witnessed such a bug patched within a day. I was even credited for helping find it, even though my only contribution was commenting “me too” on someone else’s complaint.
But maybe you don’t want to rush around and solve puzzles. Maybe you just want to chill and pet VR kittens. As I stated earlier, I literally bought the game thinking that’s all it was. Well the “My Room” feature has got you covered there. It is literally what it sounds like. You’re given a room. You put kittens in the room. Go nuts.
There are no puzzles to solve and no time limit, but the basic premise is the same. Earn cash, buy stuff. This stuff can range from wallpaper, flooring, paint, room items, adorable kitten hats and kittens themselves. You can also spend it on the items you need to keep the room under control, as well as the upgrades to those items. Coins are earned by simply doing good things. Petting kittens, cleaning and filling litter boxes, filling the food bowl, and watching the kittens play will all net you coins. Unfortunately, here is where the fatal flaw of My Room starts to show.
There just isn’t all that much to do. Within an hour you will have more than enough coins to buy everything you need or want. You can buy all the wallpapers… but you probably won’t want most of them. Flooring, for some reason, has to be repurchased every time. The room is small. It can’t be expanded, and the base items can’t be moved, so it quickly feels overcrowded. All you can really do is paint a few items, fill the limited shelf space, and wait for animal control to come knocking. You can also send happy kittens to an off-screen cat show and get a trophy for your shelf. So that’s nice.
But God forbid you step away from that room for any significant amount of time. I can leave my real-life cat alone for 24 hours, and when I come home, he still has food, and water, and the same relative indifference to my existence that he had when I left. Not so in this game. Coming back to your room from a 24-hour hiatus is absolute anarchy in the Kitten’d kingdom. The food is gone. The litter box is empty. There is cat poop literally everywhere. All the kittens HATE you. (But still brought you presents for some reason). You can hear your sofas being torn to shreds as the room takes a full twenty seconds to load. All the time you intended to spend chilling will now be spent restoring everything to the status quo.
If it sounds like I’m ragging on the game, believe me, I’m not. I’m having a blast playing it, and what you get is worth more than what you pay. (In my opinion.) If anything, the source of any discontent is just my disappointment that there isn’t more. The content that exists is so enjoyable that I would pay three times the price for three times as much. The “My Room” feature alone has nearly unlimited potential. As for me, I’m going to continue enjoying what I’ve got, keep an eye on the patch notes for anything new, and try to revise this review if any of my previous gripes are addressed. Absolutely thumbs up.
KITTIES!!! i literally sat on my floor for 4 hours straight... petting my friends >.> no regrets
Really like this game, and it has so many potential, especially for the house(tamagochi-like) mode. As a cat-lover, I would like to just sit down and pet the cat in house mode, instead of story mode.
It will be nice if player could adjust the frequency of the poop... Cleaning the litter tray become somehow tedious because they are always pooping lol.
Also, it will be great to have a customization for the cat(fur, size, personality, etc.) But yah it will take a lot of time to implement that, could imagine.
Anyway, the graphic and the animation is great, the model of the cat is well-polished and adorable. The devs really spend lots of efforts on it. The gameplay is fine and hopefully there will be some updates in the future.
Looking forward to the player movement update!
Slightly disappointed that this game says it supports sitting, standing and room scale but gives you no way to move around other than physically moving.
I read a reply to one of the comments saying it's of the most demanded features and it'll be coming, but since a seated or standing user cannot play as fully as a free roaming player seated and standing should be removed from the play area listings.
Sure you can grab things from a distance, but try putting things in a cupboard...
Overall it seems OK, but the experience is hindered by feeling stuck in one place.
I used to like cats.
Now, I acknowledge them for the nightmarish, task-master, hell beasts they are.
P.S. Devs, please add rubber bands as a sling-shoty toy. Cats empirically enjoy them.
i buyed this some days ago and liked it its funny a bit stressful so u have to do something too if u do much faults u get many coins but the one thing that is disturbing me if im playing on my laptop windows i cant pet the kittens or put the hats off because i have only one hand at windows
pls fix that so we can with the other mouse key pet them
and the second point is at the second world part 2 u can get crashed if the kittens activate to often the laser and self distructer
It's a cat management game. You have to manage the cats to make sure they stay happy.
Then theres the second free play mode where you can just play with your cats. Update: yes it does get better once you unlock more toys. :)
I still recommend it if youre like me and you like virtual pet games, this is one of the better ones. I would like to see more objectives in the free play mode.
It's a little bit buggy but it's early access and the cats are adorable especially after you turn on fur shading.
6 year old loves it. Wants more types of kittens. 10 yr old wants a dog game like this.
Entertaining even without VR!
I dont have a pc based VR system but I thought I would check this game out anyway.
I played it using the steam link and steam controler on my living room tv and things went pretty smooth once I got the controls set.
One thing I would suggest is that they add key binding in the options part of the game. This would make it easier to know what keys you need to set up on a controler.
Fun game on day one of early access. I played it on a desktop and not on VR so it was a little more difficult to perform some of the actions.
The alarm clocks freaked me out and I struggled to catch them when they were whizzing around the room!
Up to stage 4 so far and the only bug I've run into is having the menu screen stop working when I loaded 40 kittens into my room.
