Beginner level race car setup tuning software
So you know nothing about setting up a race car? Want to build your own setups but don't know where to start or what anything means? The Setup Developer Tool is for you. helps determine setups
If you love tuning cars then this tool and the others tool made by Tim are well worth it
They stole the money and I never got the 2021 version. And got no response a couple of emails.
Do not support this company.
I'll make a complaint on steam to take it down and on paypal to get the money back.
Unfortunately, after a lot of trying to make this tool work for me I found it useless. All documentation on the website is completely disconnected from the tool and provide just a general basic knowledge. Author should provide better description on how to better translate what you have in sim and a tool questionnaire? What if I am not a pro and do not have real racing experience?
For someone trying to understand and learn the complexities of setting up a race car, this is for you!! Forget about the Flashy Lights apps or the promises of dozens of graphs. Forget about the bold claims others use to make you the fastest you will ever be. Forget about learning to read telemetry. Flashiness is there to make you buy. Bold claims are there to mislead you into believing they can make you faster. Telemetry is an advanced tool for advanced users who after years of study and experience still cannot 100% guarantee to pin point what is the car and what is the driver.
So it's all useless, right? No, what you need to understand is, as a baby everyone had to learn first to crawl, then to stand, walk....and finally run! We literally did not hit the ground running and so it is here. We need to start at the very beginning. You need to get a feel for your feet (tyres) on the ground, your legs (suspension) that balance your body perfectly so that your feet (tyres) have the best chance to grip. How your feet, legs, body, indeed all your moving parts affect how much balance, grip and overall potential confidence you have to go quicker. Teaching yourself and learning with every step you take. This is EXACTLY how it is with a race car and an app such as SDT which guides you with clear explanations as to what does what, when where and why, is exactly what you need to teach yourself how to understand your car better.
The only thing I have never seen an app do, is explain how to 'feel' what is happening. How to know if the understeer/oversteer/neutrality you feel is in fact the car or as a result of how you are driving. This, is in fact relatively simple, yet very few people ever explain it.
There are 3 stages to a corner. Entry, mid & exit.
Find a reasonable curved corner that is not too short and drive into it at something like 75-80% of your fastest possible speed. The car should not be bucking around beneath you but still be pretty quick and mid corner, take your feet off all the pedals, this is the coasting phase. Does the car continue on the same path? Yes? then it's neutral. No? does it turn into the corner more? yes, oversteer. No, understeer.
Next, Entry! At 75-80% max speed, lightly apply the brakes, without activating traction control if it is available. Does the car turn into the corner more? Slightly? That's rotation. Which can be good. Too much? That's oversteer. Car decides it does not want to turn? Understeer. And finally,
Exit! As you come through the corner and you see the road begin to open for you, you will still have the steering wheel turned. At this point, mash the throttle, get your foot right down. How does the car react? Does it Rocket off down the road as calm as you like? GREAT!! Does the rear decide it's had enough following and wants to lead for a change? BAD!! Oversteer. If it stops turning and tries to head right into a wall? Understeer, also bad.
Now that you have this info, you can use SDT and apps like it, to make the car handle more to your liking. It won't make the car faster. The car is just as fast as it always was, You are just trying to get it into sync with your driving style, for your feel. Like learning how to ride a bicycle or how to walk and run. It helps you understand your car, to understand you as a driver, to give you the confidence in your vehicle AND THAT is what make YOU faster. Not the car. Not flahy arsed, fancy pants apps & programs. Just this, simple clear & concise. But please, understand, it is not a miracle tool. Indeed none of them are. You have to put the work in, not whatever app you're currently using. As for Motec and the like. Once you can do the basics without using a tool like SDT, then and only then go for it.
Until then, this is a great app and you can use it in the sim world and the real world alike.
Highly, highly recommeded.
I hope they could explain when settings are 'ok'.
like ride height higher in rear than front, asked if so, selecting yes,
just moves you along, and doesn't quite explain it.
Can anyone tell me please is this available for all the car racing games? Is this possible to install into a game?
Thank you
It is obviously great software because it just works.
I use it mainly in Project Cars 1 and Dirt Rally. In Project Cars they are all like driving on ice until applying the suggestions from this software. As I go through the steps the car starts to handle the way I want it to and the lap times get better and more consistent. Now, I could muddle through setups with not much of a clue and maybe weeks later the car would be ok, but with this you can have a great handling car within 4 hours or so. Most of this time is spent testing out on the track.
It gives you suggestions based on easy to answer questions. If you are not prepared to drive lots of testing laps then you will probably get poorer results. I like testing until I get what I need so it has definitely helped myself.
I use a Logitech G29 Wheel so cannot comment on if it would benefit someone with a gamepad.
Will it magically make you Lewis Hamilton? Absolutely not. Garbage in = Garbage out. But is a good starting point is what you need, or you have a very troublesome car on your hands; this is a very handy tool to have in your racing toolbox.
Through a series of questions, it guides you through setup and sends you back for re-adjustments when there is a major change. There is a handy little pad on the side where you can enter your lap times to evaluate whether or not there is improvement or not. The tire temp calculator helps you determine whether or not you need camber, air pressure or ARB adjustments. Or you may need all 3!
The only thing I would like to see is a different category for MR cars. While they are RWD cars, setting them up is still very different from FR cars. The 911-993 cars do not respond to the same changes as the AMG-C7R cars, although they are grouped together in this program.
Just remember it's not magic. Be a better driver first. Then tune the crap out of it! Recommended!
This has been very helpful in making setup changes and drastically improving lap times. Trying to figure out what parameters to adjust to enhance a cars handling can be challenging and this does a great job of walking you through it. Great job by the developer.
A great app that really has already in the space of a day given me a better undertanding of setup and made the whole process of finding that base set-up an easy process.
One word to the wise is that the Android version was better for me since I could just have the app open beside me as I lapped and pitted etc. The functionality on both versions, PC and Android, are identical.
Just bought this a few hours ago to use with iracing, and I've already gotten good use out of it. Helped me fix a high speed oversteer problem I was having at spa in the RSR. My ability to set up cars is somewhere around intermediate. On my own, I usually arrive at a good setup eventually, but only after lots of guesswork here and there plus major trial and error. Given a specific handling characteristic, this app takes the guesswork out of the equation when it comes to figuring out the component that most likely needs tweaking. Of course, there's still trial and error, which is the nature of setups, but at least with this app I'm able to spend less time adjusting the wrong settings, and more time out on the track.
