Break, hack, crack, solder, and logic your way through circuit puzzles. Careful, though; security is onto you and bypassing systems doesn't get any easier when you're ducking behind cover. Cross the wrong wire or flip the wrong switch and watchdogs in the circuitry will only make the armed response more aggressive.
Features
- Frantic, under-pressure puzzle solving - You know that scene in every action movie where the gang is holding off all the bad guys while the hacker tries to open the door and get them all out? Well I hope so, because that's what I'm trying to do here.
- Immersive, physics-based interactions - VR is fun and physical; just plugging cables and throwing switches can feel good, and boy do I ever have a lot of switches for you to throw.
- In-game level editor - create your own circuits and challenges to share with other technicians.
- Morrre - It’s early yet, and who knows where we’ll go from here. Hop into the forums and let me know what you think!

This is a really nice take on the logic gate kind of puzzle game. It has really fun tactile interactions and the addition of a enemies definitely gives you something to think about. It is basically, exactly the kind of game I love and enjoy playing, unfortunately I can't recommend it because the performance is absolutely atrocious. I originally picked this game up a year and a half ago and figured I'd give it the benefit of the doubt and time to improve (I'd rather support development than refund stuff) but coming back to it now I think it's actually worse than it was when I played it at the start of 2019. The game suffers from constant stuttering to the point that you keep being dropped back to the SteamVR horizon loading area. It is literally unplayable right now (and causes awful motion sickness for trying). I really hope this gets a decent optimisation before it comes out of early access because it's got so much promise. I'll definitely come back and reevaluate this again at some point because I have been wanting to play it for a long time now and seeing that is has a level editor now makes me excited! FYI: I can run Half-Life: Alyx with no trouble so I don't think it's my PC.
I had this on my wish list for a long time, really enjoyed the concept of having to keep your cool and solve puzzles while being shot at. I finally it on sale, and am enjoying what I'm seeing so far! The puzzles are really ramping up in difficulty - I was impressed by the OR/XOR type switches, but then mind boggled when it started adding in power levels, invisible codes you can only access via a headmount terminal connection, etc. Definitely a ton of depth to the puzzles, something an electrical engineer or programmer would enjoy. The shooting is OK, not the best combat I've seen, but serves its purpose ... do you drop your hacking tool, which is almost done unlocking a code, to grab your gun, and have to re-start the hack? Graphics and sound are OK, nothing special, but it's clean and plays well. Thumbs up!
fun game, but havent seen much progress. i think what you buy now is what you will get. shame
One of my favourite VR games, the combination of puzzle solving/shooting is excellent. Puzzles are interesting and varied, feels like "Keep talking and noone explodes" but for single player. Highly recommended.
Absolutely amazing game. Complex puzzle solving in a cool cyberpunk setting with workshop support. Really looking forward to the final game.
a bit expensive for what it is but that the sort of thing i like to play
I love puzzles, and I love VR. So, of course, yes.
FAIR WARNING! YOU WILL NEED A ROOM SCALE SET-UP TO PLAY THIS GAME!
Definitely a interesting gem of a VR game, The Technician scratches that little itch of a VR game that can mix two seemingly unusual tasks together stunningly well.
First off, the tools and the UI/Menus.
They are some of the coolest UI and VR elements i have seen in a VR game. The Menus feels smooth and natural to navigate with it's slide bar design, making for a interesting and intuitive style for the UI, fitting perfectly into the cyberpunk theme. The tools are just flat amazing. I don't think any other VR game has tools that seem to be as precise with interactions like they do in this game. Judging by these two alone the game gets a huge recommendation from me, as most VR games have a very clumsy UI with radial wheels and all sorts of rubbish.
Secondly, the gameplay.
I'll say it, it's not for everyone. You have to know basic logic gate functions and pre-algebra math as well as some advanced computing in order to get through some of the harder puzzles. And believe me when i say... it get's HARD. Trying to figure out what goes where with guards shooting from 2 different directions at you is quite a dizzying rush of fear and pride when you pull it off. It's definitely a bit too hectic at times, i recommend turning down the difficulty to 50% until you get a handle on things and maybe play through the alpha levels once.
Thirdly, bugs/glitches/crashes.
As a early access game, expect unstable gameplay. I have had multiple times where the game has just given up. Once was the game just insta-crashed when trying to pull out a wire. Another time both my hands became stuck in a weird state where they were transparent blue and could not interact with items or objects anymore. And various other smaller bugs, like physics freaking out a bit on wires and such.
The music isn't too fantastic, could be improved a bit by simply adding in another track that plays. Sounds are alright, can't hear much over gunfire usually though.
All in all, it's a good game with some flaws, mostly the short size of it and the bugs/crashes do ruin the fun somewhat. I recommend it if you really like "Hacking" style games, but wanted something more then just text... and are willing to deal with the nature of early access games (as of the time of writing this review).
Score: 7.75/10
"Do you mind? I'm trying to THINK over here!"
Do you like VR?
Do you like digital logic puzzles?
Do you like math?
Do you like cyberpunk?
Do you like trying to do digital logic puzzles and math in a VR cyberpunk setting while people are SHOOTING at you?
If you answered yes to all of those, first of all that's a weird thing to be into.
Second of all, check out The Technician today!
It's currently in alpha, so there's no story as such. The setting is that you're on an elevator trying to get to the top of the stalk. What's up there? No idea. There are a lot of angry people who would rather that you not get to the top, and a bunch of digital logic puzzles in your way. The guys are infinite, but they can be persuaded to at least give you a moment's reprise by offering them some high speed lead. It starts off simple, with simple logic, but eventually you'll be rewriting flash cards and jacking into the panels yourself. Just don't ignore the grenade that landed at your feet.
It's stressful, trying to balance shooting and hacking. Sometimes it's useful to just stop hacking and shoot everyone. They'll be back, but you can get yourself up to 30 seconds of quiet to think before they do return.
Fun game, and I'm eager to see what comes in the future.
I haven't advanced too much because flipping switches feels so good. It's almost therapeutic. A great logic based game that's also slightly educational (turns out you learn a hell of a lot faster when you're being shot at!).
I don't know if it's just the fact that I suck at video games, but combat feels a bit too punishing/distracting. Thankfully the difficulty slider solves the problem without being condescending.
So far the game is great and the dev is active and friendly. It's one of those games that's beautifully executed in VR, even if the content isn't there (yet). It just FEELS good to flip switches, press buttons and unplug stuff. I'd love something that helps with the combat a bit (Maybe a turret that breaks after a while and you have to fix it a similar way you work on the main panel?) Tall people beware, the lowers panels will involve a lot of crouching.
Overall I'm enjoying it and I'm looking forward to more updates!
Excellent game. The gameplay is innovative and exciting but sometimes the constant gunfire can be a bit too much and it'll have you stuck on a simple problem far too long because you can't dedicate enough brain power for it.
Multi-tasking is fun with a gun in one hand and using the other for solving the puzzle itself. You can use the gun itself to flip switches and hold buttons down so it's not necessary to drop it to solve the puzzle. This is a HUGE plus and a great game design choice, helps with the feel of the game. It's not a wave shooter and a puzzle game, it's both combined and it's obvious that the merge has been performed well.
The wire physics seem to be fairly taxing however. My system, with a GTX 1070 and i5 4690 seem to struggle to keep 90 FPS in some areas.
All in all, this game is way underpriced for what it's worth. There's lots of room for content and the story itself (haven't finished yet) seems to be only composed of an outside hacker talking to you through a prompt, however the monologue they send you is fairly funny at points. They leave to get pizza rather than give you instructions!
Some critiques for the dev:
-Enemies sometimes hang out behind the panel, where you can't shoot them, this is pretty annoying
-Interactions are a bit unclear, such as detaching the wire from the three-digit computer thing. A visible laser or sphere that shows the interaction zone would help with that.
-When pointing, the finger extends past the open hand pose, this is pretty disorienting at first. I think the whole hand should close leaving the pointer finger as it is, seems more intuitive that way.
-The pistol's sights would be better if they were more brightly illuminated and in a different colour than the laser. Maybe green?
First of all I want to say that this "technician" game has great potential (if done right). The concept is an amazing ideea, period. I really enjoyed the game so far, however there are so many things that can be improved.
The shooting part is done very well, I was very surprised, really nice. It needs more variation but it looks very promising. The graphics in this game also look very, very promising. Most of the electric/electronic components look as they should.
The puzzles however, in my opinion, are not as good as they should be but it's just an early access. Let's hope the troubleshooting part of the game will improve in the future.
If the game will have an EDITOR I would like to see it, sounds like a great ideea.
OK, so this game has a lot of potential.
I guess the digital gates stuff is not everyones taste. But you know that before buying, right?
Die idea of adding pressure to the puzzle game is really nice.
The gun mechanic feels cool as hell, because of the fairly realistic fire and -reload mechanic.
(Does anyone else find it really cool to be able to release and shove a new mag in the gun?)
The puzzles (while currently being mainly tutorials for the various systems you need to overcome)
are already fun to do.
And one thing I especially like is the "do stuff like real in VR" approach.
Flipping switches - nice.
Fiddling with a tool to overwrite registers - cool!
Re-wiring circuits with cables or remote TX/RX thingies - Uuuh!
Plugging your head into the circuit via neural interface - Hell yeah!
One general tip:
You will spend a long time on your knees in ths game. So I'd suggest yu get some comfy knee protectors going.
Thank me later...
What I wish for this game:
- more and more complex (but not unfair) puzzles
- a little bit more exposure of the guards when they shoot in cover. It's often times really hard to hit a tiny head from afar.
So it's a bit too difficult to get some breathing room on the higher levels, I think.
- optimized controls. Handling wires is finnicky as heck and frustrating at times, because you miss the ends a lot.
While the opposite is happening when holding the programming tool (accidentally grabbing it out of your other hand)
And maybe it would be good to simply make the players hand automatically "point" when near a circuit.
Or something like this.
So I hope the dev will continue to flesh out the game play. It's definitely a nice base to build on
and already quite fun.
Very great for that spy-hacker-heist itch. Very tense and fun.
This game has some really great concepts and playing it was a ton of fun- but, at the same time very frustrating in ways that I can't really tell if are part of the game or are just wrinkles that need to be ironed out. Here's some pros and cons to the game.
Pros
-Wires are amzing in the physics department, interacting with them with my hand is really cool!
-Gunplay is simple, but satisfying.
-Puzzle difficulty curve is good, nothing felt as if it wasn't explained to me well enough to the point where I couldn't continue.
-Guards pose a real threat in this, while health regenerates if you get to caught up in what you're doing you'll die quickly.
Cons
-Wires are a pain to grab, if you don't grab both ends the wire will just fall out of your hands.
-The datapad (I think thats what its called?) was just giving me too much trouble to handle. Maybe when holding the buttons can be mapped to the touch pad?
-This one is really specific but I think fixing it could be a really nice change. When you are holding something with the grip button, you keep holding onto it. When you press the trigger button next to an object you're holding, the thing you're gripping will go the button you held with the trigger. This would be fine however the trigger button is also how you make your hand point so in order to interact with buttons percisely you have to press the trigger AWAY from what your holding or else you'll just grab it.
So far I love it! Very intense problem solving! Keep up the good work, this is my fav VR game so far...
This is everything I had hoped, looks basic graphically but has a huge sense of immersion. It's also surprisingly energetic once you have to start dealing with attackers.
You will need reasonable amount of space to play it, and a cool head when under fire.
I think this might be my second favorite VR game now (after Elite: Dangerous)
I don't have the space for Room-space VR, but I saw the video, DONE couches stacked on couches, suddenly had enough space to play!
Toooootally worth it! Most satisfying thing I've played in a while. Switch Flipping, button pressing, guard shooting madness! I managed to finish what's there, and I'm super excited to see what comes next. Some of the mechanics were totally unexpected, and were all the better for it.
fantastic! lately there's been a drought in terms of new creative VR games, and this has hit the spot! i'm not amazing when it comes to puzzles and the challenges in this game can get ridiculous really fast, but the game does a really nice job of teaching you what you need to do. managing the different tools and keeping the flow of hacking going while keeping your ass not full of bullet holes is both difficult and so much fun. absolute favorite part of the game is the neural link. i have never felt more cyberpunk in a vr game than when i had my neural link attached, fighting for my life while making sure i didn't step too far away so that it wouldn't come unplugged while i was waiting what the number was. this game is a must try!
i do have a few small issues that I hope will be remedied soon. Grabbing items/interacting with points of interests is either way too finnicky or way too sensitive. I found myself having to try multiple times to try and pull out wires, while if I was holding something in my left hand and my right hand was less than a foot away from said held object and I tried to interact with something else, tapping the trigger would grab the item in my other hand and it would drop to the floor. I found this happens a lot with the number injector for the I/O ports. lastly, the reloading feels cool and all, slamming the gun onto the clip on the desk, but there should be a little bit of leniency on how easy it is to get the clip into the gun. at one point i lost a very heated round because i went to slam a new mag in and i somehow launched the entire ammo mechanism outside of the ring.
overall, this game has potential to be one of the most interesting VR games i've tried yet, and it's already very close to hitting that mark! i can't wait to see what comes in the future. Different things I would like to see in this game would be: more variety in gunplay (weapons, enemies, etc), more locales, the ability to artificially move within your space/move further outside of the roomscale area, and more cyberpunk mechanics like the neural link! Or just more uses for the NL. lastly, a campaign of sorts would be fantastic, but I understand the limitations of this being a solo project. thanks for your hard work!
Love it already! It's somewhat similar to Keep Talking and No One Explodes, an intense logic puzzle solving game but with some cover wave shooting thrown in, It feels bad ass, blind firing out of cover to flip the last switch or holding a button with the barrel so you dont have to drop your gun. Graphics are very sharp and enemy is pretty good for what they have to do. Simply firing near them will buy you a few seconds as they duck behind cover. This game is very hard but very satisfying when you are cowering but the solution to a puzzle finally clicks and you are on to the next floor.
The collisions are a little wonky making some stuff hard to pick up and the difference between trigger and grip isnt clear for some items and since the buttons canbe physically pressed as well as using the thumbstck/trackpad, it's way to easy to accidentally push buttons when trying to pic stuff up. It's nice that both options are there. maybe trigger could be designated to manipulating swiches and buttons with the pointing finger and grip can be solely holding objects. Itdidnt really give me that much trouble. The elevator climb is nice and would be good for a campaign but i hope there are other maps/scenarios. Looking forward to whats coming.
